Angels Lost Again Postgame

The Tigers got some base runners right off the bat, but Silent C was able to work out of the trouble without giving up a run. Luis Rengifo struck out with the bases loaded to end the first inning. Each pitcher had hit a batter but nobody was injured.

A couple of Tigers walked to lead off the second inning and Spencer Torkelson made it to third on a force out play. A single then drove in a run. 1-0 Tigers. Kerry Carpenter doubled on what might have been a homer if Adell hadn’t got his glove in the way. still, they scored two. 3-0 Tigers. The Angels went down in order with a pair of strikeouts.

Spencer Torkelson singled in the third inning and Colt Keith homered to make it 5-0 Tigers. The Angels were retired in order once again.

Nothing much happened in the middle innings. Taylor Ward got a hustle double to end his hitless streak. He became a LOBster at third base.

In the top of the sixth inning, Javy Baez and Tomas Nido singled to put two men on for Kerry Carpenter who homered to make it 8-0 Tigers.

In the top of the seventh inning, Colt Keith walked and Javy Baez got hit by a pitch again. Then Trey Sweeney homered. 11-0 Tigers. In the bottom of the seventh, Kyren Paris walked and Zach Neto doubled to make it 11-1 Tigers.

Touki Toussaint came in and had a clean top of the eighth inning. The Angels also failed to score.

Touki Toussaint struck out Spencer Torkelson. Then Colt Keith singled. Javy Baez doubled. Trey Sweeney singled to make it 13-1 Tigers. Ahem! Kerry Carpenter singled and Andy Ibanez walked to load the bases. Luckily Jace Jung grounded out to first to end the inning. Jo Adell and Kyren Paris struck out. Tim Anderson got a two out hit. Zach Neto flied out to center. The Angels lots 13-1.

The reason why the 78 yr old rich guy hasn’t sold the team yet is because of Trout and Rendon.

Full disclosure: I watched zero minutes of today’s game… I just had a feeling. Best Sunday ever! Things were popping off. Life was good. I used to hate Arturo because he’s objectively a bad owner—not the worst, honestly not far off.

My advice: Live your lives, y’all.

My wife has Stockholm syndrome and now wants a fanny pack, so we’ll be there Sunday. But honestly, this team doesn’t deserve our emotional equity.

In 2022, as many of you will remember, we lost 14 straight at one point.

I honestly think this edition of trAdition has a 15 gamer in ’em.

OTOH, were this team to suddenly go on a 15 game winning streak, I’d assume an all-out nuclear war was imminent.

The rangers fired their offensive coordinator today saying it was time for a new voice. The Angels time for a new voice should have happened two weeks ago. Slow to make adjustments

I’m referring specifically to Naoua Inoue. There is something cool about Japanese fighters being killers in combat sports.

Kenley Jansen is a legit trade chip.

Silent C should not preclude the team from giving Dana or TBD a shot. He’s regressing to the mean, apparently.

I agree but at this point it really couldn’t be much worse if you hired any reasonably reputable individual. He still has the same talent to work with and the same GM if there is no change there.

Exactly. It’s not like Kyren Paris is gonna be like “Oh shit, we hire @#$%^. I better stop closing my eyes when I swing now.”

Also, as a “baseball mans” who are you hiring that, purely from a background sense, is more reputable than Wash? Who is out there?

But even if you went “fresh voice” or what ever…. what’s that supposed to do?

Bunch of grown ass men blowing millions of Arte buck trying to get Nolan Ryan to get them pregnant. I would like to see their awesome player development and draft evaluation skills though..

“This guy’s white and short with stubble. My instincts tell me he’ll be good.” Followed by, “We need to sign 27 year old free agents! Someone point us to the 27 year old free agents!”. I will also enjoy when they figure out a way to quantify grit on a scale and I can’t wait for the first time they fail to submit a line up for a game because they can’t stop bitching about the last one.

Tomorrow will be a Monday, home, with an off day, right after the end of the month. I would think that they have at least one meeting in management tomorrow to review where the team is and the performance over the first month. I’m sure Perry is looking forward to THAT meeting. Arte , Kuhl, Carpino on one side of the table, Perry and maybe Washington on the other side.

This isn’t happening, but hypothetically, if Artie was to fire Perry and Wash, you can’t hire replacements until after the year, who would the interim replacements be and who would you make an effort to get permanently that you believe would make a difference?

Tough to do much with budgetary constraints and two veterans who are being paid $80m to do nothing.

That said, Perry did draft 20 pitchers in a single draft with none of them contributing at this point.

I would pick an org like Milwaukee or Cleveland…. some good org. Pick a couple. Try to hire the #2 in that org, then have him hire his guys from that org for everything else.

Basically try and do a brain transplant. We kind of actually did that with Perry/Atlanta, but I would try it again. Spend money poaching the best GROUP that’s already all set up to work together.

Even the dreams of a CBA trade or two are going up in smoke. Rengifo and Ward look untradeable at the moment. Jansen – depends on the next few times gets to close, but he’s going to get rusty with infrequent use. Do teams find value in Anderson? Hard to tell.

But they could easily make it to July at this pace, and have little to offer to improve their draft position.

Roy Hobbs

The problem is I don’t trust the organization to be aggressive in their pursuit of the future. We need for Ward and Rengifo to get hot and then trade everything of value and suck it up for the rest of the year. Hit the draft and regroup. What else is there at this point?

gitchogritchoffmypettis

I think the biggest problem is you have to find a team that wants to trade its CBA pick. The other GMs are more of an obstacle than Perry.

Time to replace the manager, and some coaches, not all their fault, but with a record of 76-119 in past season and this, change needs to happen. At least get someone who will kick some butt and light a fire in this bunch. This is the worst hitting team, by far, so far, in Angels history.

33 games in, is it safe to say they have the worst bullpen in the league? Nobody has an ERA under 4. Fermin, MDH, Burke all resemble gas cans. Ironically, the guy I have been most impressed with is Johnson, but Wash doesn’t know how to use him and is hell bent on shelling his confidence by trotting him out for 2 innings.

So how do you know which reliever is going to be any good this season? Emanuel Clase in Cleveland was the best the previous two and now he’s a hot mess. This is why investing in bullpen pitching sucks kinda like horse mounted cavalry charges for today. Who’s out there that other teams knew was gonna be good this season in 2025?

GonFishin

Sounds like a coping mentality. Isn’t that the point of external scouting FAs or internally scouting prospects? I understand bullpen arms are hot and cold, but again, NOBODY has an ERA under 4. Even a broken clock is right twice a day but you are telling me our GM can’t find 1 guy internally or externally capable of putting together a consistent quality outing?

It seems a big part of being a baseball general manager is building a solid medical and training staff and developing a pipeline for pitchers to grow and fine tune their craft. Pitching, even with all the analytics we have available today is still a fine art and I truly believe that the quality of a team’s pitching development and medical care is correlated with their overal competence as a system.

Hitting, base running, defense, they’re all things that can be developed as a team, situationally, through practice, can be easily quantified and understood, or are fundamentals that could and should be drilled. A good coach can drill fielding into a player that has the right tools, a pitcher with talent needs to be taken care of like a thoroughbred racing horse though.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Or you go the Doyers rout…. buy about 2 billion dollars worth of pitching, also develop a ton of pitching, then break half those arms, then buy more.

Constant replacing shit pitcher for shit pitcher. And yet, just think how excited a few SL or Panda pitchers are right now… getting ready to fly out to CA tonight to get sacrificed on Tuesday against the Jays…only to be returned in a few days, damaged, restocked, shelved for future shellackings.

steelgolf

Well, they are due to lose another 6 games or so before the next win. This team is NOT prepared to hit and play baseball. It’s like they have no idea what pitches the opposing pitcher likes to throw.
