LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Reimbursement

The Los Angeles police and fire departments cost about two million dollars to work at the Dodgers victory parade. The Dodgers will reimburse the city for that.

Erstwhile free agent Griffin Canning has agreed with the Mets to a one year deal worth $4.25 Million and possible bonuses. Alex Cobb was considering retirement when the Tigers offered him $15 Million.

Nolan Arenado used his no-trade clause to block a trade to the Astros.

What could go wrong? Cody Bellinger’s wife used to date Giancarlo Stanton. Will it end up like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig not being on speaking terms for all those years?

Left-hander Zach Logue has a deal with the Doosan Bears of the KBO for $800,000 plus a $100,000 signing bonus. Joey Gerber got a minor league deal with the Rays. Andre Lipcius got his minor league deal with the White Sox while Ryan Miller got his with the Detroit Tigers. The Mets have a minor league deal with catcher Chris Williams.

Just a reminder that maybe it does get worse than Arte. Apparently the Jets owner has influenced multiple personnel decisions based on players’ madden ratings.

That is a fun headline but in reality I don’t think it A.) was the actual deciding analysis and B.) seems like a pretty normal/expected thing for an owners sons to point out?

I imagine it was just a talking point in a conversation. “We shouldn’t be excited about a guy with a mediocre rating in Madden” – Jerry Jeudy’s career in Denver was mediocre to the eyeball test too, the Madden rating was just a publicly known distillation of that.

I don’t know. Jets sound like a huge mess but articles like this are always sourced by people who just got fired. In this case its kind of obvious their fired, failed GM is throwing dirt on the team to make himself appear still-employable.

Bad pro sports team ownership is real, just like in any other business. There are legitimate reason why the Jets and Angel franchises suck.

You can’t overcome bad ownership with anything but being lucky. And it won’t last long.

I think the good ones know how to get out if the way. They are smart enough to build solid Orgs and let people who know baseball/football/basketball/ soccer/ etc. make the personnel decisions.

Arte dont have any teenagers so I doubt we will have those issues. But maybe Trump will give Arte an ambassadorship to Zimbabwe so we can finally get the ship headed in the right direction.

Okay Arte (I know he ghosts this site) make a lowball offer to the Cards for Arenado, which could accomplish two things:

  1. Generate false interest, therefore driving up the cost of his eventual team
  2. Maybe luck-out and surprisingly land him relatively pain free

Guys. WTF? You want to pay Arenado, who I love but is clearly falling off, to come play 3B and likely fall off even more. You want this WHILE we pay Rendon to do what? Sit there and think about how angry you are with him getting hurt?

IF Rendon had played as many ABs as Nolan last year, even with his pathetic OPS, he was on a pace for 1.8 WAR. That’s IF HE NEVER GOT HIS BAT TOGETHER. Nolan had 2.5 WAR last year.

So, basically, you want to trade prospects and use up two roster spots and pay a Soto level amount of money on third base because your Rendon Derangement Syndrome is that strong? To replace a guy that, though we seem to have decided is a “cancer” the team seems to like a lot? Which would likely cause…. a cancer? Just because Rendon’s constant injuries have made your asshole pucker and you’ve decided “this must be a bad guy”? To gain what? 0.7 WAR? Plus Rendon gets “made to see how unsmile he made you”? Arte is punished? WTF is the point?

Even if Nolan has a hometown resurgence and his OPS gets above .800 this is a bad idea. But Arte is the stupid one around here?

Is the reason the baseball gods hate this team and no one wants to come here starting to be a little clearer now fellas?

How about a three-way trade where Arenado goes to LAD with Rengifo, and Muncy and Helsley come to the Angels with a Cards prospect? Cards get massive payroll relief and Angels prospects of the Koch/Bachman/Silseth or Rada variety.

Muncy doesn’t have a clear fit at 3B or 1B if Arenado goes to the Dodgers, and Dodgers have coveted Rengifo in the past. We know Muncy can play 3B adequately, he’s a lefty, and is much cheaper than Nolan.

Not sure this would be considered a rebuild trade since we are trading 2 yutes ( Rada & Silent C) for 1 yute (McGreevy) but I really like the trade in terms addressing some real needs in the starting pitching staff.

Of course the only problem is what would we do with Kyle Hendricks?

McGreevy still has an option, so he’s stow-able. He seems more sustainable as a backend starter than Koch.

I was just trying to check the remaining boxes the FO has highlighted, and bring back one cheap, controllable arm. (Hjerpe, Liberatore or Robberse are possible substitutes, but McGreevy has a solid floor.)

I personally don’t have any problems with just sticking Rengifo at 3B, and extending him in summer if the project works out. But I don’t get the sense that the team is as bullish on him full-time at third.

Meanwhile, Muncy has plenty of experience there, is affordable, and seems like a name that would pass muster with Moreno. And Helsley is a legit late innings stopper.

Given arbitration estimates, it only adds about $12M this year to payroll.

You missed, “…lowball offer” in my proposal, that would require the Cards to shell out a lot for his salary.

For teams in search of an outfield bat, the Mets’ Starling Marte, Cleveland’s Lane Thomas, San Francisco’s Mike Yastrzemski and the Los Angeles Angels’ Taylor Ward are there to be had. Other options include Guardians first baseman Josh Naylor — whose availability, along with that of San Francisco’s LaMonte Wade Jr. and Texas’ Nathaniel Lowe, further muddies a crowded first-base free agent market — Angels utilityman Luis Rengifo and Minnesota catcher Christian Vazquez.

You DO NOT trade guys like Ward and Rengifo when you are on the cusp of the edge of the fringe of someday competing. Otherwise I have to watch a bunch of guys who may not be good and that makes me sad. Plus, I have to look up who these guys are and all their stats are from weird teams in weirs towns. It makes me head hurt. I need assurances before I commit to complaining about a bad team all year.

If you DO trade them it needs to be for some of those prospects that are 100% guaranteed not to bust.

Now that you mention it, we could use a young Trout in our lineup. Why didn’t Arte think of that?
