LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Champs and Chumps

Welcome to the last Weekend Links of the 2026 regular season. This has really been a remarkable year in Angels history and in many ways a surreal experience for me personally.

Congratulations to the Southern League champion Rocket City Trash Pandas. This team has been a joy to watch the last couple of months and gives us several reasons to hope for a brighter future. The team caught fire down the stretch, largely fueled by trade deadline pickups Arjun Nimmal and Jacob Cozart.

But it was the steady production of Jake Munroe that earned him Baseball America Angels Prospect of the Year honors. Credit to whoever helped him with his swing adjustment because it is paying off big time. Could we actually have a decent third baseman in the future? (That’s a legitimate question, Turk’s Teeth)

Meanwhile, the Angels are quickly closing on their first 100 loss season. There’s been a lot of debate about whether or not that matters down here, but a 100 loss season would be the perfect cap to Arte Moreno’s tenure as owner.

It had been awhile since I had a good Arte rant. I enjoyed the hell out of writing that.

And if anybody has paid attention, I’m all about embracing the tank and getting every small advantage possible in the rebuild.

Ok, so I finally have what feels like some insider stuff. Nothing major, but here goes and I have not shared this (in print form) anywhere else. So on Sunday before the game I joined a little pow wow in the dugout with just a handful of writers (Rhett, Sam, Fletcher, a couple random dudes) and Kurt Suzuki. Really informal, we talked about football to NIL to Kurt in the minors. He’s just an amazing guy, super nice, and although I don’t think he’s a good manager I really wish him well in whatever he does next. It was fun and only serves to set up the good stuff.

Kurt leaves as does everyone but me, Rhett, and Sam. Two high up Angels communications people stayed with us, one with a “Vice President of” to begin his title. It was not on the record nor was it expressed to be off the record. But here’s the rundown:

  1. Molly knew about the sale 2 weeks before it was announced. She kept it to herself, hence the Mozeliak front office moves the day before the announcement. I saw Molly the night before the sale was announced and we exchanged quick hello’s. Not much interaction but she acted the same as ever. I will not be playing poker against Molly.
  2. Kurt has been given far more autonomy in the last month or so. He was also a guy who wanted more data/analytics and to make the coaching changes. No indication he is staying (or going) but some context to his tenure.
  3. Molly wants to stay on but that has yet to be determined. Inside the building she is viewed favorably and my guy used the “turning a battleship around” phrase and pointed to Molly as being the driving force behind the internal changes this year.
  4. No idea what the future holds for Mo.

So back to the rebuild. Ryan Johnson, is he a legitimate rotation piece moving forward?

It seems like the rebuild has more questions than answers right now. Several players were likely playing for their roster spots this last week.

What to do with Grayson Rodriguez? What do do with Oswald Peraza? And is Denzer Guzman finally showing us his true capabilities or just loves Sacramento?

From around baseball:

The Brewers have won 100 games for the first time in franchise history. The Brew Crew does it right on many fronts. Drafts and develops well, then spends its revenue sharing money on payroll. I think they are the MLB team I most admire.

And who had money on the White Sox making the playoffs at the beginning of the season? Congrats to them on their turnaround. Again, another reason for Angels fans to have some hope.

Speaking of great guys, Jo Adell is one and it is awesome to see him playoff bound.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. The NL Wild Card seeding could come down to Sunday and is the best reason to watch baseball. I’m going to do my favorite thing in the world and be a dad this weekend. I’m not sure what me and my little guy will do but we’ve had a lot of family and friends around lately and it will be nice to get some one on one time.

George Brett, Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton, Wade Boggs, Gaylord Perry, Eddie Plank, – the dudes Mike caught this year on alltime bWAR. Now sitting at #43.

For position players, he’s #30 and finished just behind Foxx at the end.

Another 4 WAR year in 2027, he’d pass Foxx, Kaline, Beltran, Clemente and Anson for #25 position players.

99.9 percentile

The Giants claimed Camilo Doval off waivers from the Pirates on Thursday. I’m sorry, but that’s a move we needed to make.

He has 1 year left of arb before becoming a FA and his numbers (aside from ERA) look like Zefferjahn’s.

Best case, he’s your first half closer if Joyce is hurt and you flip him for something at the deadline.

Worst case, he’s a middling reliever – but one with flashes of dominance as recently as last year. And you flip him for something lesser.

Having a shit record should allow for some of these fliers right now. His WHIP is terrible. He walks too many. But, could he get hot for 3 months and get us something valuable?

Yep.

Yes…….The Chargers took a chance on Jim Harbaugh after what happened at Mchigan, Tigers also took a chance on AJ Hinch.

I’m curious, does anyone for sure know what the tie breaker is if we end with the same record as the A’s? Is it indeed the “inverse” of the tie breaker used for wins when seeing who makes playoffs?

If two or more clubs tie in the current year’s winning percentage, MLB looks back at the prior year’s records. The team that performed worse the year before gets rewarded with the higher pick (earlier position) in the tie.

The curtain closes on 2026 this weekend. Personally, I’ll miss it, I always do. Hopefully Trout can finish strong and more importantly, the team takes significant steps forward this offseason.

Anyone here going to the Ohana Festival in Dana Point? Looking forward to seeing Billy Idol later.

Mike Trout .250 update:
if he goes 3 for 3 he’s there. I expect he might get 12 more at-bats. He’d need 5 for 12 and that would only get him to .250 by rounding up (.24952). 5 for 11 would work better, exactly .250. That’s possible because Seattle is awful. Should he go 0 for 12 he’d be at .240, again rounded up.

We’ve been burned at third for so long that I’ll believe it when I see it, and then I probably still won’t believe it. Kind of like the turnaround with the pitching staff right now. I probably need some more hopium. Much like alcohol, my body doesn’t naturally produce it, so I have to supplement. Yesterday’s link to the FanGraphs article on projected WAR didn’t exactly help. I can see the possibility of another run like we had in the 2000s, but then two words pop into my head: Dallas McPherson.
Nice Arte rant. If it’s an article by Jeff, I’m always going to read it. But I’d prefer 99 losses rather than 100. Hopium supplement.
But then I read Jeff’s  article about possibly finishing ahead of the A’s. Different kind of hopium.
Milehigh reviewed an Athletic article in the comments, and I’m completely on board with the larger point. I would much rather watch the Angels develop a great organization that competes every year than continue buying players on the backside of their careers. We’ve watched that strategy produce fifteen years of mostly mediocrity or outright failure. Build the system first. Then maybe I won’t need quite as much hopium.
Somebody (I’m too tired to scroll by now) wrote about how drafts in MLB don’t matter so now I just don’t care and am hoping for 99 again.
I’ve also noticed that lately the conversation seems to be more about people within the organization making astute baseball decisions and less about non baseball people making out of touch corporate decisions. Thank you, Molly.
Congratulations to the Brew Crew, and being from Wisconsin myself, I’m happy for them. But what have you done in AA lately?
With the pitching holding up, my hopium level is now high enough to reasonably think that with a few decent hitters who can also defend, and a bullpen that doesn’t blow eleven ninth inning leads, this team could actually get to .500 the next season baseball is played.
In another article Jeff wrote, “…ace Reid Detmers…” More hopium.

there was a time when the Angels acquired high priced talent and it paid off, with Grich, DeCinces, Lynn, Reggie, Carew. Some decent pitchers, too although I’m still mad at Zahn (82) and Candelaria (86) for not pitching shutouts when they should have. But we also were developing players at the same time. Wally Joyner, Gary Pettis, Dick Schofield, Mike Witt, Chuck Finley, Kirk McCaskill, all drafted by the Angels.

So I can see a combination of intelligent drafting plus high-priced signings if the plan is to go both directions. By the way, those 80s signings were all of guys in their 30s except Fred Lynn. Reggie Jackson was 36 in his first Angel season, which could be considered the backside of his career yet he was a great contributor to the team (as I remember).

I hope you’re not disappointed. It could happen but I think things are going to move a lot slower than most people think. The right pieces to buy are not available and the youngsters are not ready yet. What there is of 2027 will likely look a lot like this year and 2028 may be rough as well with a lot of younger players. 2029 might be as soon as we see .500, but it could happen in 2028. The pitching could be solidified, but maybe not if we trade Detmers. We’re just too many players away position player wise.

If Bregman, Alonso, and Bellinger were all 2-3 years younger, and FAs this year and you signed them all along with Skubal and maybe Arozarena, You might have a path to being better sooner although your payroll would be 350M. You would also need some bullpen pieces. And you would need to beef up your Farm. There’s just too much needed. Even 2029 might be optimistic. The Pitching is there or almost but position player wise we’re starting almost from zero. It’s going to take years and longer than people think.

We’re probably going to have to get worse before we get better. We need to bite the bullet and trade our marketable pieces.

Stan is also getting a new TV network too with ABTV.

Looks like he’s been owner of his Colorado teams regional network for over twenty years.

So the take is he’ll know exactly what to do with a network as opposed to the billboard guy.

And that means more profit funneled to the team

From ESPN article: “The owners’ main goal in negotiations is to seek some form of a salary cap system. The MLBPA, while arguing that overhauling the economic system is unnecessary, would like increases to the minimum salary, lesser restrictions to the luxury tax threshold and further enhancements to the pre-arbitration bonus pool.”

To me, this sound like a discussion between two drunks. One side wants all bars closed because he has a drinking problem. The other side wants bars to remain open much longer because he also has a different drinking problem.

The floor is really important and they need to fix the revenue sharing issue but neither side seems interested in what is in the best long term interest of the industry. They both just want more money right now. I have no sympathy for either side. They deserve each other.

I think this whole 100-loss debate has achieved “Is Caitlin Clark racist?”-level supercritical dumbfu*$ery. But maybe it’s the inevitable byproduct of a bad product?

It is because the Angels are literally the ONLY MLB team to NEVER have 100 losses.

And I want to keep it that way.

Such a funny point of pride.

What that says to me is that the Halos have never truly rebuilt. Instead they have (except for a few seasons) been mired in mediocrity.

Consider – would you rather have that point of pride or a handful of 100+ loss seasons and 4 World Series championships.

I’m certain (if it applied) that the Dodgers would not use “no 100 loss seasons” as a rallying cry.

It been pretty much the Halo way always. Sign star players past their prime to get butts in the seats.

Things can also be mutually exclusive.

We are the angels, we have won one championship. We have never (to this point) lost 100 games. I’m sure all the teams are waiting pins and needles to chant “one of us, one of us” when we get there.

That is a false equivalence.

Dodgers and Cards haven’t lost 100 since 1908, Yankees since 1912, Red Sox since 1965, and Giants since 1985.

The ONLY team that has both lost 100 games this century AND was a powerhouse has been the Astros who lost 100 in 2013.

So it helped 1 team in a way that it cannot help anyone anymore because we have a lottery now.

Yes, being a Dodgers fan is great right now and they can also boast they haven’t lost 100 in over 100. We aren’t in that world where the Angels won 4 times in the 2000s because we lost a few more games in the 90’s to get a slightly better draft pick.

Fansince1971

I’m just saying it’s not really something to brag about. It’s like an investment firm saying they’re the only ones who haven’t lost $5 billion in a year when they have lost $4,999,000,000. It’s just not something that should be a point of pride in my opinion. And if that’s all you got to hang onto as a point of pride, things are in a pretty sorry state.

I just think we need to drop this as a focus and something that we hold out as a positive.

New marketing idea:

“Angels Baseball – We’ve never lost 100 games!” 😂

It’s not the only point of pride. It’s a point of pride. This has been a weird season and the on field results have been awful. The Trash Pandas are certainly the highlight of the year for me, but avoiding 100 losses would be good too.

I’m hopeful that this will be rock bottom for awhile in terms of the on-field product.

I also think that it might be good psychologically for the youth of the Angels to not be on the Angels team that sets its record for most losses.

I do not like your slight of my Astros. They lost 100 in 2013, but you forgot 2012 & 2011. In fact their overall record is 5175-5120, .503 W-L%. It looks like they really are the “half-Astros.”

We have a few tarps off guys who’ve gotten their way. It’s much appreciated, Arte sold the team! Couldn’t be happier. But they are hell bent on keeping their shirts off and yelling at something (we should lose!!) or someone (me this week) every day.

I had a very interesting conversation once with a VP of Six Flags in Arlington. He pointed out when you work in a narrow industry (His examples entertainment parks, radio, TV, baseball front offices? etc) you seek employment in “turn around” or “winning” opportunities. The last thing you want to do is work for a “sinking” company. You want upward mobility and you have to be ready to change jobs and cities. When I think of that, I don’t think money will be the deciding factor for excellent new hires that have a similar view. And he noted, when you hire an excellent subordinate be aware if he is good, he is looking at his next opportunity elsewhere.

(Molly didn’t hire a previous Rockies GM, but a former Cardinal.)

I want someone to do a deep dive (if possible) into how the avs, rams, & nuggets went from sold to under KSE rule. Then try to figure out how they can replicate that success to MLB.

Have you seen the Angels programs at games? The amount of people they have employed to help run the organization is bare minimum compared to other large market MLB teams. I suspect KSE to deploy a larger workforce so I believe brighter days are ahead.

The Athletic had an article early this month questioning team beat writers of KSE franchises. I will try and find the article if I can. I don’t recall if a subscription was needed or if this was from the free Windup news letter. My summary of the article is below.

“An Athletic article questioned team beat writers of KSE’s teams that they own. Covered the Rams, Avalanche, Nuggets, Arsenal. The last question was about what Angel fans could expect after the purchase is approved. Here is that response (I replaced the writer’s name with the team name they covered):

Rams I am curious about the “spending” element of Kroenke’s foray into baseball, because while the Rams are highly successful, they are not among the higher cash-spenders in the NFL. However, Kroenke has also shown a willingness to invest in certain edges that matter in football, such as coaching and allocating team capital like draft picks to secure elite talent. Kroenke was also willing to take on a massive amount of dead money in 2023 while the Rams underwent a sprint-rebuild; it paid off to the tune of the super-team they currently have. Short-term discomfort does not seem to be an issue for this owner.

Arsenal: “In for the long haul” was a catchphrase in Arsenal’s difficult early days. The Kroenkes have shown themselves to be committed and carefully ambitious.

Avalanche: The Kroenkes have financial might — the sheer number of teams they own shows that — but are selective when they use it. Their history with the Avalanche suggests a willingness to spend when in a championship window, though perhaps more with personnel than in other areas like facilities.

Nuggets: If the Nuggets’ stewardship, as well as the success of all the other Kroenke teams this decade, is any indication, there’s a reasonable chance the Angels may finally break their playoff drought and maybe even contend for a championship. But don’t expect the team to break the bank with payroll.
Regarding the Nuggets, the beat writer mentioned specifically that the team never has spent into the luxury tax numbers and there are rumblings that the Nuggets are not making the most of Jokic’s prime years.”

My takeaway from the article, the Angels will still need to make their own money. KSE isn’t just going to write multi-million dollar checks at a whim. And his thing is as much real estate than just an individual team.

P12 pointed out that the Nuggets did pay luxury tax in their championship season.
Fungo Ale replied that yes, Nuggets did that but did not want to cross the 2nd level where penalty money is pretty harsh.

It’s about 20 times more work than a standard CtPG reader would be willing to do, and honestly I have no idea how to do it myself at this point, but it would be really interesting to….

1) Learn how hiring and recruiting coaches, scouts and front office guys works. Can StanK just offer the GM of the Rays a ton of money to be a POBO? Can we just buy houses and offer piles of money for the Brewers entire scouting department? Or are there restrictions and rules?

2) Do IIWSK where you build a whole org, ignoring the players entirely. Hire FO, development, manager and coaches. Hell, find out how much pitching and hitting labs cost, etc.

This would be, of course, very hard. Most people with a job can’t go figure out who the best independent hitting coaches are, or if it makes sense to hire college coaches to work in Arizona and low A, or who the hell the good scouts are.

But it would be fun and interesting.

Other sports leagues poach coaches from championship winning teams. If we get the rays, brewers, other small market/budget teams… will that fit the KSE mold? I don’t think I want to poach the NYM brass who’ve had almost free reign when it comes to spending.

But yes really good post and thoughts.

I really like how his coverage is very in depth and broad. Not just endless stories like “Ham Sandwiches and Mike Trout. Does he like them?” followed by “Zach Neto, League Leader in High Socks” and “Trout Becomes First Player From Southern New Jersey To Hit Six Strait Singles! ZOMZ!”

I sure wish someone would have a talking to with Neto – he’s reaching Dennis Rodman status for how silly that looks.

I really hope most of you read Jeff’s article “why a historic 100 loss season is the perfect cap to arte moreno’s angels ownership”. No notes!

It’s breaks down into sections that each can be talked about on their own:

Nepotism & Bad Hires
Death of Player Development
Winning isn’t a priority
Biggest loser in angels history

Jeff and I are at minimum acquaintances and what I’d call friends. I read every SI article to get him a few clicks and support his paid gig. I sometimes forward his articles to friends and family. That was one I did share.

I didn’t forward Jeff’s article about embracing the tank. That’s not one my friends and family are going to understand or engage in. In fact, a quick search to find a counter argument to it on why tanking/losing in MLB doesn’t work out as well as other sports leagues yield the following results (see attached). Not one person on team tank has stated any of these or even mentioned it feels weird and odd to root for your team to lose. I do feel like the money aspect (extra $1.65 million, right?) is worth mentioning more than beating your division rival (who runs very different than the angels org) to a guy in the draft or waiver. The money aspect would’ve been important under Moreno, I don’t think so under KSE.

Jesus Christ man. We know all of those factoids about the “tank” that is rolling through the verdant fields of your mind. The anti-tank angle shows up everywhere for you. I bet you can’t discuss dental implants without eventually working it in. I still want to know….

Are we tanking? Or do we just suck? If we are currently tanking, which roster and line up moves have we made in the last few weeks that indicate we are playing worse options to lose more games? Not just one guy playing a game instead of the other crappy player, but clear tank moves?

We all know that tanking to get a single better pick in the draft is stupid. We all know prospects wash out, even first round guys. Now, with the draft lottery, you can’t even count on picking first to get your dream boy. What team tank wants is to have every slight advantage in place so that the chances of the entire pile of younger players brought in this off season has a slightly better chance of producing some quality players. So what we really need to know is how winning three extra games at the end of a horrible season helps the team more than the very slight edge that is given to a bottom 3 team. I’ve heard what I get for being second worst. What do I get for having 64 wins?

Is the value the org may possibly reap by being the 2nd worst team in baseball of absolutely no value? If so, why do they have these rules that benefit bad teams? And why did they have to create rules to fight tanking? We will already be a 98 loss team. Should we not want the best booby prize we can get?

Those facts you listed have been addressed over and over again by the guys who really want to tank. I hate the fact that, once we secured our lottery odds, I was pretty ambivalent about losing enough to gain something more. Especially to the Mariners. But you are literally so annoying I find myself actually rooting for the Angels to lose now while trying to just not recognize those Mariner uniforms on the other players. Thanks.

I liked watching Christian Moore have himself a game last night. Sue me.

Glitcho, this is a snippet of how you talk to other members that arent me

“OK. So I think what you were trying to say with this glop is that I would never ponder the idea that keeping Neto may be a good thing because it is a thought that isn’t mine? Which is also stupid. I literally said it’s not the end of the world to keep Neto, it’s just not the smartest move either, for reasons that have been gone over thousands of times regarding dozens of players just like Zach on losing teams IN THE COMMENT YOU ARE FRONTING YOUR HARLEY MAN POSE ABOUT.”

Step one of giving unsolicited advice like “scroll past” DO SO YOURSELF!

I would agree if he didn’t look so lost at the plate the other 90% of the time

Yeah it can be frustrating, in game threads you get the visceral in the moment fan reactions to a lot of those. Be careful if you get frustrated though and who/when/where you share it with.

Remember Kyren Paris’ start to last season. Fun while it lasted. Hopefully Guzman and Moore can catch a little fire before the season ends to get that good juju going for next season (if there is one).

On JWH postgame there is a graphic of Grayson’s performance. His fastest fastball was the last inning (97.6). His slowest was the same inning 93.3. His command is way off. So I am totally speculating, guessing but it looks like the elbow debridement surgery may have done some nerve damage. He gave up only 5 hits but the walks are killing him. And he is grooving too many pitches. You can see the movement of the catcher’s mitt is extreme. I hope a long rest solves this as the talent is there but the command is not.

Yes this would definitely qualify as speculation, Dr. Texan44. Why didn’t you make this diagnosis after his two-walk, 0ER game against the Astros last month?

I made it as non-definite as I could. Speculating, guessing, may. But Grayson this season is not the Grayson of 2023 & 2024. His issues in the past have been muscles, lats etc. The only major difference, again just speculating, is the elbow surgery. And anyone that is watching the game or using Game Day, has to see he is not missing by 1/10th of an inch. He is erratic – all over the place.

And you have to see the frustration from him after so many pitches.
