I wrote last weekend that the Angels should shut down Detmers and Urena for the season. Both had proven what they needed to prove and there was nothing to be gained by rolling them out there.
As usual, nobody listens to me. And, honestly, that’s probably a good thing a lot of the time.
Tonight Urena was simply off from the get go. The score was 4-0 before he even sat down between innings, thanks to a shot by former teammate Donovan Walton in the bottom of the first.
The A’s pushed the lead to 5-0 before the Angels got on the board. They did so courtesy of back to back jacks by Mike Trout and Vaughn Grissom.
An RBI single by Grissom in the top of the 5th inning cut the lead to 5-3. In danger of letting the A’s gain ground in the loss column, manager Kurt Suzuki made the obvious move and brought in Jose Fermin. The Dominican right hander did what Luke Murphy somehow failed to do and put this game out of reach.
It was 7-3 by the time Fermin was done coughing up runs, ensuring the Angels would be 3 up on Sactown with 4 games to go. It notched the 98th loss of the season, meaning the Angels they must win 3 of 4 in Seattle to avoid the team’s first 100 loss season.
