LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Final Days

Sunday will be the final home game of the season for the Angels. They will wrap up the season on the road, ultimately finishing in Seattle.

This was the first real home stand after news of the sale. I covered the game Monday and found the best story to be in the crowd. Gone were the “sell the team” chants and back were the smiles on faces and cheers for the team. It felt really celebratory for watching a last place team.

On Monday the Angels faced Kade Anderson and the Anderson/Bremner storyline as back to the forefront. The Angels tee’d off on Anderson’s straight fastball and roughed the kid up a bit. The story between these two is just getting started, though.

And in things that matter, Zach Neto was named the Angels nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award and I was able to get a few quotes from him on the honor. Until this day I did not know about his work with the Joe DiMaggio Hospital although I did cover his trip to Fleet Week this year.

Not the Angels but this happened this week and it was crazy:

On the field, the real fun is in Rocket City right now. As I began typing this the Angels prospects are up 6-0 in the third inning and I was kicking myself for going to the Angels game. It was 9-0 before I hit the Big A and the final ended up being 12-3. This team is on a roll.

Jacob Cozart is looking more and more like a steal for the Angels and he did his best De La Cruz impression.

If you are looking for reasons to feel good about the rebuild, look at AA. Not only is the team rolling in the playoffs, it is largely fueled by trade deadline pickups.

That’s not to say AA has all the prospects. A handful of A ball guys are looking like part of the rebuild as well.

On the big league field, Moises Ballesteros is on fire right now and looks like a great addition for the rebuild.

And for an Angels highlight, I had a solid view of this throw on Monday and Neto was incredible.

About the only bad news was Samy Natera Jr. being shut down for the season.

This might be the year to head to the AFL. The Angels contingent is looking legit.

I really want to get looks at Nimmal and Munroe. Add Victor to that list too. If I can squeeze out a few hundred bucks for a tank of gas each direction, I might just go.

For the first time in months I went to the game last night simply as a fan. Just me and a buddy at the game, no press stuff, no work, baseball as it should be. Had a blast and got great seats for next to nothing on StubHub. That last part will change under new ownership, but Angels games are still simply fun.

And I got to watch Meckler hit a walk off. Wade is a really good dude and it is a joy seeing him live out his childhood dream of playing for the Angels. His speed in the outfield and on the bases is a nice plus and I like his high on base and high contact game.

I’m sad to see this season draw to a close. I feel like it is finally getting good. For the first time in forever I feel like the Angels have some guys they can build around and some talent on the way. Add that to a team president who is engaging and proactive and a general manager with a track record of success and the ship is finally moving in the right direction.

So enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. Jim Abbott will turn 59 tomorrow if you want to feel old. I will do no real work, catch the game on Sunday, and spoil my son this weekend. So if you happen to hit the final game at the Big A, hit me up.

Christian Moore is rocking a .160 batting average. While it’s far too premature to label him a bust, it’s also true that he’s shown the team virtually nothing to feel good about him as a viable starter moving forward.

Hopefully he can have a nice little surge over these final days.

Ditto for Trout and the “quest” for .250 and 25 homers….

He wasn’t my guy at draft time, and I said at the time that I worried about his contact issues and thought he might have the rocky up-and-down debut that Adell had. (Plenty of whiff, but some visible game power.)

But I honestly didn’t think he’d struggle *this* badly with chase, approach and pitch recognition. He really is just having terrible at bats, and it’s tough to know what the next steps are for him in this organization.

Pretty easy call to bury him in the minors. As far as a position, it’s LF or 2nd, Angels need to pick a lane. Then we all stop talking about him until 2029.

Skenes getting hit hard again tonight. The best part is that it’s by KC so we could see our magic number (for best odds) going down! Yeah! I’m fine with winning out as long as we’re bottom 3 and one of those is SF. In fact, I’m more than fine with that. I think it’d be great. I want to see the shufflebot one more time in 2026

It’s getting late in the day and I don’t think I have offended everyone yet. So here goes. My take on Molly is the same as Suzuki. Their only job is to put people in place to succeed, not fail. (I don’t think Musk has a degree in Rocketry but he knows how to hire people that do. That makes him the leader at Space X.)

With Molly being around for years and the team declining, you can make the case to blame her, but apparently she had little to no input into “baseball operations.” But given a chance she hired a formally successful baseball guy and fired one that was very unsuccessful. With that being said, I can’t imagine Suzuki getting to keep his job next season. Not that he doesn’t know baseball operations, but that he is unsuccessful in getting wins. As Al Davis once said, “If winning is not important, why pay a million dollars for a scoreboard?”

Let’s of people were a little testy today. May I offer an “opinion.” I, like others, state opinions as “facts.” They are not facts. Neither is mine. A “fact” as an example is Batting Average. An “opinion” is WAR. People take facts, massage them a little, and put out their version of WAR. As someone once stated, “opinions based on facts” is still an “opinion.”

On here, we all get to state our “opinion” but the “fact” is we don’t get to vote on the manager, his decisions, the GM, his decisions, etc. So let’s enjoy reading others “opinions” as long as everyone else realizes that if you differ from me, you are WRONG.

And all of this is my opinion.

I’m watching this during my lunch and 2 things stand out to me so far.

1. I don’t remember a lot of the advanced math stuff I took in college 30 years ago.

2. The quote “offenses which avoid strikeouts in the regular season are better suited to succeed in October.” This was the 3rd strongest predictor in many cases.

Knowing Biloxi

After sweeping the Knoxville Smokies out of the North Division playoffs, the Trash Pandas will face the Biloxi Shuckers in the Southern League championship starting Sunday. Some fun mother Shucker facts:

> It’s the Brewers’ AA affiliate and currently home to four of its five top prospects, including No.1 overall MLB top prospect Jose Made and 2025 draftee Andrew Fischer, who blasted 48 home runs between two levels this season, which is insane.
> Despite that gnarly lineup, the Trash Pandas did well against them in the regular season, going 10-6 (AI tells me).
> Biloxi was one of the first European settlements in the U.S., established by French colonists in 1699 (also from AI).

No Wally love on this beautiful Friday morning? We blindly stumbled our way into a burgeoning ace. His style is similar to Skubal in the sense of he’s going to attack hitters with mainly fastballs and change-ups, and dare them to hit it. 144 inning sample size tells us Wally is winning, the hitters are losing.

I miss that the comparison is all that close as one has a slider, only one has a sweeper, one has a curve, one uses 5 pitches as the other uses 4 pitches. The fastball is close and the sinker is right on the change is not as close. I Wally right now is in a class of his own and the best rookie pitcher in the league and glad he is on our side with ap itching fWAR of 2.7. 😃

De La Cruz is one main reason I watch the Reds. I saw him, in batting practice at Chattanooga, hit a ball that stayed pretty much on a line, looked about 12 ft high, all the way to about 340 ft in right field and hit the wall so hard you heard it all over the stadium. Hardly any lift, hardly lost altitude that whole distance.

That is difficult and he is a beast.

He’s a freak. Defense still needs lots of work, but a freak athlete. Seeing those types of hits in person is jaw dropping. I’ve seen a few that were unbelievable. Still one of the most memorable was ball Charlie Spikes from Cleveland hit at the old Big A. Line drived that hooked over the old left field bullpen. Looked like it started below the fence and just rose. Was out instantly and seemed to keep rising all the way over the bullpen. Still have never seen a ball hit like that.

Remember Josiah Gray? Top Dodgers pitching prospect? Remember Keibert Ruiz, can’t miss catching prospect? Gray just got off the injured list today. These guys were the major return for the Nats in the Max/Trey Turner trade.

These are the deals that make GMs chicken. In fact, looking at the Nationals and all the prospects they got back in their huge trades plus the Bryce Harper who ran off and the Steven Strausbreg who will be with them forever probably makes entire front offices drink heavily.

So do you just not trade your stars as they age, get expensive, and your team starts to fail? The fans need someone to watch right? That’s why you hold on to Bryce and Ohtani.

Josiah Gray is an example. You need three of him to get one long term starter. You need that kind of coverage all over the place. A good way to put it is a VERY strong farm system has 50+ grade players as it’s top ten prospects. Of that pile you will likely get three players that stick in some way. THEN you need a couple mid-grade guys to blow up. Like our boy Walbert. And you need to more or less keep that going, only letting it lag for a year or two at a time.

I don’t care about StanK’s money when it comes to FAs. Look at this current shit FA market. Sure, it will be handy to retain the players we develop and maybe acquire and pay for a guy, the way the Doyers did Mookie. But we need him to flood the farm with investment. And what’s exciting is that is something he can actually do this winter while the strike is going on. I hope to see it.

Of interest re Zach Neto. And no, I am not saying to trade him or not trade him, so calm down.

It will be a semi-hint as to what Neto will want longer term when we see what Randy Arozarena signs for.

Basically, Randy has slightly better year on year offensive output than Zach. But Zach plays SS. But Zach is not actually a very good SS. Still, it’s more valuable.

Also more valuable is Zach will be, I think, four years younger than Randy when he is FA eligible. That means he’ll get a longer deal. But AAV wise it is likely to be closer, with Zach likely to get a few million a year more than Randy.

So it’s a very big “ball park”, but it will give some indication of where Neto money is heading. It also gives an indication of where his value is going. He is making 4M this year to be Randy Arozarena. That’s a damn good value. He will make more and more money in arb now. That value will shrink. On July 15th of this season Randy Arozarena’s trade value was a whopping 3.7. Zach’s will be higher, he’s younger and a SS. But you’re not getting much for him if we wait till he’s in his walk year to trade him.

So Moz has a lot to think about. We have some SS prospects. We have Guzman up now. Will Zach even be a SS in two years? Maybe he’ll be an incredible SS in two years? Will the team be a contender by 2029? How much do we want to pay Zach to wait till we are good? Would we rather have a fairly good haul of prospects for him?

Roy Hobbs

All good points and for those reasons I am saying trade him along with Detmers and Schanuel. 2029 is likely the earliest we can be good and even that may be optimistic. As you imply, we are headed in the right direction. It’s going to take some patience from the fans. I love them but we will just be paying them while we’re not good and have nothing to show for it when they leave. Let’s get more players who will be ready in the 2028/2029 time frame.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  Roy Hobbs

If they want to go the Salvi Perez rout with him and just pay him to be around till they are good cause they love him I understand. It’s not the end of the world. But yes, they should trade at least two of those three guys… and if I were king it would be all three if we could really get AA/AAA/AAAA talent for them. Serious prospects ready to get at least their first taste of the MLB next year if not already sniffing the MLB already.

I want to really rebuild…. I don’t want to take five years doing it if we can avoid it.

I’m in the trade Neto camp but keep Detmers and Nolan.

If contact hitting is the plan then Nolan is well suited for that.

The way Detmers is trending I wonder who the next Detmers would be if he is traded. Maybe there is someone in the minors now and I don’t know who. Maybe we get that prospect and a couple really good OF prospects for Neto. If so then maybe we trade Detmers for a couple more.

My opinion is a closer has to have one pitch that he can throw for a strike 80-90% of the time. And a second pitch that for the first 30 feet looks like the other pitch. Your closer is coming in to close out and win the game. That is so hard to do when you walk a guy or two. I would prefer the first pitch being almost “unhittable.”

For those reasons, I don’t see a closer currently on staff.

Jeff – you’ve become a Halo Honk. Is this really Roger Lodge?

I personally can’t see any appreciable difference in the team or the experience – yet. I am hopeful that is coming, but at this point it’s exactly the same and Arte is still the owner.

Maybe because you have a situation you love – access to the team president and press box as well as credentials – you see things differently and through rose colored glass I am in a more wait-and-see mode. No Ducks blanket or bobblehead will lure me into that den of inequity until Arte is fully gone.

She is a finance and business person and a good one who worked for both ARCO and Disney both before working for Artie. She’s very good at what she does. She was only promoted to her current position within the last year and she’s already done 3 significant things in a fairly short amount of time. These decisions have resulted in a more stable financial position for the team, a much improved amateur draft when compared to the past, and a significantly improved farm system.

She fired the incumbent incompetent GMShe fixed the broadcasting revenue issueShe hired an experienced baseball executive to make baseball decisions because she knows she’s not a baseball person. She’s doing her job as the team president, and in my opinion, doing it quite well so far. The impact of what she has done in a fairly short amount of time while the team was being sold is quite impressive and should not be underestimated. She is making everything people here want to happen, happen.

I understand your position and can also understand why she seems like a good promotion. You have put forward your thoughts very competently and I appreciate that.

Molly replaced arguably the most incompetent Baseball Executive in recent times in Carpino. The fact that she has made arguably rational decisions, following a decade+ of sheer incompetence within the organization does not change that she is not a baseball person.

Is she smart, yes. Did she orchestrate some change that has to be viewed for the good, yes. Is she a long-term solution as President, I don’t think so, and I think with the change of ownership, you will see that all of the folks that sat around while Arte ran this thing into the ground will be gone.

I’m not sure yet why the continuous statements about Molly’s non baseball background are coming. I find it rather fascinating that a non baseball person has started the changes that has resulted in better starting rotation results and better prospects in the farm. If it were up to me I’d have a statue of her outside the stadium.

It would not surprise me if Molly tells the new regime that she wants to retire. 26 years is long enough and the org is looking better. I think the new owners know they would look like crap if they just shoved her out.

Your disagreements of Jeff’s comments don’t bother me. I think the personal statements are unwarranted. Particularly multiple times.

But her job isn’t to make baseball decisions. She is not a GM or a POBO. Her job is to run the business, which she is very qualified to do. She has worked in the business of baseball for at least 26 years, maybe longer (I don’t know what she did before the Angels).

This is like saying the CEO of Ford isn’t a car person because he or she isn’t a mechanic or an engineer. She has spent her entire career in baseball and in the context of her role, she is very much a baseball person. She wasn’t hired from a different industry.

We seem to forget that all the guys CtPG Guy constantly bitches about are, indeed, mostly “baseball men”. And they fail. There is a good chance that Molly, while being in the mix as a professional in a baseball org for two decades, has picked up some shit. She doesn’t need to know how to fix a bad change up. She just needs 20 years of hotel bar conversations about what kind of guy works well finding pitching coaches.

I have no idea if Molly is a real manz of baseball or not. But it’s very possible for her to have a clue when it comes to what a high level exec needs…. like maybe hiring a guy who worked for the Cardinals fore a long time.

Since Molly was elevated, do you think she’s done anything good? If yes, what?

Oh, for sure. There is no doubt that by comparison to Carpino, she looks like a friggin genius. But the bar was so low at that point that any meaningful change towards hiring an actual competent GM would be considered an advancement. I do not think that Molly Jolly is the solution for the long-term restructuring and rebuilding of the Angels organization. I doubt that she or any of Arte’s folks will survive once Kroenke assumes ownership and starts making the necessary fundamental changes within the organization.

I don’t know that anyone has said she’s the long-term solution, but being happy that someone who seems competent is now at the helm seems like a pretty normal reaction.

If someone was part of running the household while it’s infrastructures were destroyed, and where shit was thrown everywhere, I suppose that person might seem competent when they managed to later secure the foundation and clean up the shit. But the fact is she was part of everything while all of that was happening. So yes, I do not see her as part of the long-term solution, but I will get her credit for making the house livable for now.

No, again you’re wrong in your analysis of what I have said. You like so many others want things black or white where life is more in the gray area.I give her some credit, but I also can see the other side, which is that she has been there as an Executive on Arte’s team all of these years while the organization has been completely destroyed. I think Jeff is overstating the optimistic viewpoint. I am allowed to think that and say that

yes, you are allowed to think and say that, just like we are allowed to pick your criticisms apart. nobody cares about stadium music, or drops of water at the stadium, we all know its an old stadium that should probably be demo’d. So to use that as an example as how the team is still in a very bad place, disregarding the pivot in draft and trade deadline strategy, seems pretty disingenuous.

Again, there you are with your black and white and words like “disingenuous”. I am skeptical. The team has moved one step in the right direction. Will it make the other 100 steps that are necessary to become a competitive, excellently run and viable Baseball organization? We have to wait and see. That is certainly not as popular of an opinion of “hey let’s party”, but I think it’s much more realistic. But again, that’s skeptical me. It is not disingenuous because it’s my real opinion.

I am very happy about the first step. I am cautious about the next 100.

I’m only going off of what you’ve written. You admit things have gotten better and you’re optimistic, but don’t believe Jeff when he says people at games are also optimistic. It just seems like you’re grasping for reasons to critique Jeff, and once your reasons are questioned, they seem to fall apart.

My thoughts have not fallen apart as you suggest. I’ve given specific and consistent reasons for my skepticism. I have been clear on this so I disagree with you on this.

I think the main take away we can all see from this exchange is that joy stealing soul crushing no fun allowing Angels fan shit sipper piss boy JuJu is a real thing that doesn’t just flow from Arte but actually lives inside some of us like a badger made of poop.

Jeff has insight into the team working than any of us, so his observations are going to come off as biased at times.

And there will be a time – they will likely use him like Boras uses Heyman to leak something. But all his stories seem to be following his passion. He’s a fan and covers the team journalistically. Nobody made a more scathing article than Jeff did about Arte. That surely didn’t win him any influence unless there were staff that wanted him out too.

I don’t think he’s saying things are great. He’s saying that the mood of the fans at the stadium seems less grim than before.

Well I am sure people are no longer calling for Arte to sell the team during the game ….

Although I certainly do not know first hand because of my position on giving Arte any of my money, my buddies who go fairly regularly report a fairly poor baseball experience with the stadium having pools of gross water dripping from overhead barrels of who knows what, overly loud piped in music which makes it hard to hear, broken television monitors within the Terrace level, fake clapping and lots of other annoyances. I am hearing this all remains the same so it is hard for me to believe it’s all sun and roses now. Except of course no more choruses of “sell the team Arte”.

And Jeff wasn’t referring to any of that. He was just referring to his observation of the way things felt. This seems like a very silly thing to focus on.

You’re missing the point. There are no facts to argue. You could simply say, “It doesn’t feel that way to me”, but you’re trying to say he’s wrong and there is no way to argue that. It wasn’t a factual statement. No one said you can’t disagree or have a contrary opinion, I do it all the time but calling him Rodger Lodge was a bit over the top. Things are moving in the right direction and are going to take time, like years, and believe me, I am as anxious as you for the change to happen faster. With Arte selling the team, Perry being fired, and the hiring of an experienced baseball executive, I would think that you of all people would be feeling more positive because of these. The changes on the field are going to take more time than we would like as things were and are a huge mess. Feel free to continue to disagree whenever you feel like it, it’s just that lately, even with things happening that you have been begging for, you seem more cranky than usual.

Well said and good points. I want to be clear, I am super extremely psyched about new ownership and a complete change of this organization. I am also cautiously optimistic that there are some pieces in place that might develop into long-term solutions. On the latter point, it is more tempered optimism because this ship could take quite a while to right. That is why I am firmly in the camp of trading Neto and even Detmers for the right packages.

Where my optimism is strained is the idea that everything is suddenly roses. There is just too much work to be done, too many new hires throughout the organization, too much change within personnel and executives to be happy or anything beyond mildly hopeful at this point. The situation was so bad that any optimism at this point, other than for the distant future, seems forced and thus the Rodger Lodge comment.

This organization was systematically destroyed by Arte and his goons. So yes, I am thrilled that the team has been sold and particularly thrilled it has been sold to Kroenke. That makes me happy not cranky. What makes me cranky is over optimism for the current time because it’s just not realistic and it belittles the amount of work that needs to be done.

You say “I am super extremely psyched about new ownership” but then say Jeff relaying that exact same optimism he hears from fans at games isn’t real. C’mon man.

I can hold two opposite points in my brain at the same time and be comfortable. On one hand, I am super happy about the sale. On the other hand, I can temper that optimism with reality. As I’ve already said, if the excitement at the stadium is related purely to the sale, I get it. But it is way too early to have any optimism beyond that and I certainly don’t think that Molly Jolly is a long-term solution. In short, I can be optimistic about one thing and largely uncertain about other parts of what is happening. I may feel much better once we know the new baseball executive team and it will hopefully not include anyone who was there for the Arte years

I haven’t been to a game since the sale was announced, yet I am full of optimism. I’m sure many fans at games feel the same and are happy to express it to Jeff. I think that’s what he’s relaying. Not anger related to drops of water in the stadium, or the generic music that’s been played all season under Arte’s ownership. Your inability to understand the difference is what makes me, and likely others here, think you’re just grasping for things to gripe to Jeff about.

See above. I am not griping or cranky, I am totally psyched that Arte will be gone. But there’s just way too much work to do at this point to be happy beyond that.

but your opinion seems to be that you’re optimistic, but only in a very narrow way, therefore if Jeff hears people who have optimism that surpasses your own, its him just being a lackey for the org. I think that’s BS on your part.

Incorrect. I’m only gonna say it one more time. I am entitled to my opinion, and I will say it. I can be both optimistic and realistic. I am so much more optimistic than I was six months ago, I will shout it from the rooftops. But I’m also realistic that things do not change overnight and to be too optimistic at this time is actually a weakness because it trivializes the amount of work that needs to be done. To say that everything is wonderful and great right now in my opinion is shortsighted. That’s my opinion and there are certainly lots of people out there who see things black-and-white. Either terrible or great. I tend to be more skeptical and I see things as optimistic but extremely cautiously. So when I see over optimism, I react to it. That’s not saying I’m right or wrong. It’s saying it’s me.

Wow – what is MLB baseball doing with scheduling. Complete insanity. I was looking at the remaining schedules of Mariners and Rangers – the Rangers don’t have one division game in their last 15 games. I really think the last month of the season should mostly be division games. They will only have 5 division games the entire month of September. Makes no sense.

The Angels are such an afterthought for MLB (because of their now 11 straight years of futility) that they start the season on the road, and end the season in the road!

I finally realized the “scheduler” was insane when it scheduled a Noon game with 95 degree heat as a “getaway game.” Then both teams had the next day off. It must take 2 days to get from LA to SanFran.

5 team division will do this on the schedule.
