LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Getting good for the trades

Good morning Angels fans! Have some links!

Angels News

The Angels won 3 in a row. Impossible? No. Improbable, yes. It has happened again.

Still, the team is 20 games under .500, it is gonna be a seller. Yes, with the new GM, leaks have come out saying the Angels are actually willing to tear it all down this time. For real. Thank you John MOE-liak. Trying to make some good nicknames and memes for the guy, trying with Moe from the Simpsons and seeing if that sticks.

Neto being traded is something fans are more open to these days due to his low baseball IQ.. Especially when someone like Grissom has a high one, bouncing the ball to keep it more visible for the 2B on this GIDP.

The Angels continue to be an embarrassment, firing a scout for spying on the Rockies. Angels LOST TO THE ROCKIES. HE DID NOT EVEN DO A GOOD JOB SPYING!

Around Baseball

If a double play is a pitcher’s best friend, what is a Triple Play? Marlins did that last night! AGAINST ALTUVE AND THE TRASHOS! Still lost the game though.

30 for 30 has not been what it used to be. But they are doing one on Ippei, so, that would be fun. Still prefer Jon Bois’ ones though.

Hey, all those who play sports, WEAR A CUP. And to the women out there, Jill Straps have been a thing for at least a decade now. Don’t be an idiot like Jazz.

What teams walk and who hits for average? Angels do neither, but so do some good teams?

Pirates really should be doing better than 3rd WC

Always remember to run through home, because the Dodgers didn’t and Ohtani was out before the runner crossed home. Ohtani pulled a Neto!

What teams have the most FWAR? Not the Angels, obviously, but they aren’t in the bottom 5 either.

Angels and Trashos are the same, WTF?!

Vlad Jr has been really mediocre this season. And the Blue Jays, who are under .500, may be the first team to lose Game 7 of the WS and NOT make the playoffs the next season since the 1987/1988 Cards. St. Louis went from 95 wins in 1987 to 76 in 88.

May be a bit contrary to popular sentiment here, but

Keep playing Soler and Lowe. Maybe one will get hot and someone will take one or both of them off our hands. If they’re here after the deadline, Lowe goes back to SLC and Soler is dfa’d.

Maybe playing them costs us a game or two. That helps with draft position. As much as I hate it when the Angels lose, I know it’s in our best long term interest. Hey, maybe that means Suzuki is more useful than we thought!

I don’t think there is any level of hot that would make them tradeable at this point. They’re both batting .200

Unfortunately neither will get hot and it wouldn’t matter anyway. As trades they have no worth.
Both will be here after the deadline and both will play the rest of the season.
The team is near the draft lottery now. Not much lower to go that would make a great difference.

Baseball America published a pre-deadline feature today about ten prospects that are currently blocked in their organizations, and more likely to be traded due to teams overall being more reluctant than ever to deal from the tops of their systems. Not coincidentally, two of those ten prospects were featured in my Dodgers-Angels exchange proposal yesterday: Zyhir Hope and James Tibbs.

Figuring maybe I’m on the right track here, I decided to put my IIWJM hat on and see what we could get if Mo ran the gauntlet, and traded all four of his chips.

Here’s what I came up with.

The BTV sim feels all of these are fair, except the Adell trade, which they indicate is a moderate overpay, but I think the sim is undervaluing 1+ yrs of Adell, the fit for Philly is perfect (RHB that mashes lefties), and Chace is coming back from injury. Seems like a natural swap, given the context.

In summary:

Angels give:

Zach Neto, SS
José Soriano, SP
Reid Detmers, SP
Jo Adell, OF

Angels get:

Robby Snelling, SP, AAA
Michael Forret, SP, AAA
Moises Chace, SP, AA
Zach Root, SP, A+
Cam Cannarella, OF, AAA
James Tibbs, OF, AAA
Zyhir Hope, OF, AA
Brandon Compton, OF, AA
Caden Bodine, C, AA
Brayden Taylor, 3B, AA
Chase Harlan, 3B
Starlyn Caba, SS/2B, A+

That’s not a rebuild, that’s a resurrection, brothers and sisters.

Top 10 farm system after four trades, with MLB-ready pitching ready to take over for Soriano and Detmers, and multiple OFs ready to take over for Adell. Slide Guzman or Peraza over to SS, and there’s really no 2-3 year tank window. It’s a 2027 transition year with a full pipeline of positional talent marching toward the MLB team for a ’28 contention window.

Remember the Atari console game Yar’s Revenge? Call this one Turk’s Revival!

That would be epic. And the talent there would pair well with the prospects we do have: Rada, Raudi, Flores, Klassen, Murphy are all in AA and AAA.

Give them 27 to see what we have. Then spend some money in 28 to try to win.

I would do that Detmers trade RIGHT NOW. Actually, I would do all of those trades. I especially like swooping up Cannarella on the side. I really like the gamble upside on Ziar Hope…. all in all this is a good pile of prospects, most of whom will fail, but who will collectively provide us four or five solid roster pieces and maybe a star player or two.

Love it! Sell, sell, sell!

With typical inflated deadline pricing, couldn’t we fleece the dodgers a bit more? Do we have any relievers that could be traded for more than they’re worth?

Don’t care for the Adell trade. If that’s all he’s worth, I’d rather keep him. At some point he’ll go on a tear and increase his value, if past experience is any guide.

Turk's Teeth

Adell has very little value, unfortunately, and I think betting on it to rebound isn’t a great play. There’s only a year left on his contract, it’s a lockout year and a non-competitive one for the Angels, and he has an arbitration raise coming, so he’s only getting more expensive as his contract expires.

The sim feels even my modest exchange is too favorable to the Angels. But I’m betting the Phillies can unlock another gear with him as they did with Marsh.

Go DJ! Cuz that’s my DJ! Go DJ!

Dylan Jordan lobbed his third 10-strikeout outing tonight with Rancho Cucamonga — his 34.7 K% remains fourth best in all affiliated baseball behind Kade Anderson (SEA), Johnny Slawinski (LAA) and Kelvin Zapata (BAL)

Kade Anderson, sigh

Of course, we also probably wouldn’t have Slawinski if we had spent up on Kade so there’s that.

Nah – the Halosphere really needs to disabuse themselves of that notion. It wasn’t an either/or choice.

The team had more than enough pool savings to sign Kade, Anthony Eyanson (available in both the second and third rounds), and Slawinski. They could have even signed Slawinski and Gray.

Kade only signed for 1.1M more than Bremner, and for 1.4M less than Angels’ slot value. The pool overage deployed on Talon Haley and Xavier Mitchell alone in the 12-13 rounds was $1.5M+ over slot. Direct that money to Slawinski and Gray, with a smaller discount to Kade than Bremner took, and it all pencils out.

My own draft sim last year attempted the same thing. I grabbed Kade in round one, and caught a falling Eyanson in round three. Instead of prep arms, I wanted to focus the pool overage on prep bats: Taitn Gray, Quentin Young, Josiah Hartshorn and Jacob Parker were my four targets, instead of the seven overslot prep arms they took. Could have grabbed at least three with one comp trade.

That alternate scenario would have produced four top 100 prospects in a year’s time. Their current places on the BA 100 list:

Kade Anderson: #8
Josiah Hartshorn: #29
Anthony Eyanson: #33
Taitn Gray: #84

Hartshorn was the remaining BPA on my board when the Angels picked Luke LaCourse in the sixth round. Jacob Parker (my pick for a TGA-like Day Two overslot sign) went on to become the cleanup hitter for the Mississippi State team that went to the Super Regionals this year…as a freshman!

Talk about sighs…

Gotta love CtPG Guy. 2 out of the 4 guys on that list are pitchers that idiot Perry drafted. Bremner’s K% is pretty high as well.

The only thing their brain can process is “I see Cade Anderson’s name. I sad.”

Well, I guess I’m that guy. Because Anderson and Eyanson would be the Angels rotation right now, while, K rates and all, Bremner and Shores are treading water at best in high-A ball. Bremner in particular is red flags aplenty.

Since returning from illness, Bremner has put up a 7.52 ERA and a .911 OPS against over the past two months of play. He hasn’t gone a full five innings once. Boy ain’t right.

It’s the putrid bullpen and the underwhelming offense. A lot of hitters are not playing to their averages, let alone expectations. O’Hoppe, Adell, Neto, even Trout, haven’t played to expectations. So far it’s only been Nolan, and he alone cannot carry the offense with his slap hitting.

Pineapple12

Yep. The offense has been disastrous outside of Schanuel, with the infrequent extra base hit contributions from Neto and Trout.

The bullpen story is interesting because it was being weighed down by the shit vets. Zef, Bachman, Silseth, and Natera have been good overall and lights out recently.

And normally you would say that the manager probably doesn’t significantly influence wins or losses, but in our case I think he has been a significant contributor between bullpen management, line up construction, and deciding who plays and where. He makes Nevin look like a genius. The fact that he’s still here is the biggest negative right now. I’ve never felt that way about a manager, even Nevin, but Suzuki is just clueless.

You would think someone would at least try to throw Arte a bone and find an interim manager who believes the best thing they could do for the players is try to win games now.

Wash 15 WAR was a joke to many, but a premonition in reality.

I don’t have it in me to review every game and dissect where Suzuki directly costed us games with his bullpen management, but the first 30 games were especially brutal. The Mahalo Moron’s decision making probably lost us 10-15+ games. All for the best now with the tank full steam ahead and (hopefully) giving Mo freedom to kickstart a rebuild

I have a clear vibe that Suzuki is not really expected to win.

He’s an absolutely great dude who keeps the vibe light. I think he believes in his players to a fault. Hence Trout in CF and Soler still clogging up DH.

Some day I hope he is a base coach here I think he’d be perfect in that role. But he’s out of his depth strategy wise.

I’ve seen nothing from him that makes me think he has any chance of ever being a good manager.

Maybe, maybe he could learn to stop being too soft on vets and unequally tough on younger players. Maybe he could learn to earn the respect of a locker room.

BUT, if after his entire playing career at the most cerebral position in the game, I don’t think there is anything at this point that could teach him enough for him to be an effective manager. He’s an idiot and nothing is going to change that at this point.
