LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Free falling

Morning Angels fans. Have some links.

Angels News

Angels lose their 7th straight game and it was a blowpen loss at that. When will this end?

The Angels are so bad that even the Pirates are making fun of them. Yes, the PIRATES. Hope the Angels do not break their record of most consecutive losing seasons.

Hey, good news for once! Baseball America now has the Angels as the 23rd best farm. Baby steps!

Around Baseball

The Los Angeles Dodgers have now finally played more games than the Brooklyn Dodgers. Really should have the Angels switch to Anaheim… maybe next owner.

Ohtani became the first Japanese born MLB player to hit 300 home runs. Dodgers lost the game anyway. Tungsten Arm lives!

Baseball in countries in NOT America are funny since they use Metric. This includes Canada as they use Metric but only sometimes. As such they have a conversion table for MPH and KPH.

How long is too long to change a hit to an error? Because Joe Ryan caught a break, losing 6 EARNED RUNS from June 30th.

Back to back 5 hit games happened for only the 3rd time in MLB history! Tyler Tolbert is NOT the name any of us would guess would join Roberto Clemente in doing this. And Hi Myers in 1917 as well. It is also 12 straight PA with a hit, which ties the live ball record.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

Sucks that Meck sits and we still have to suffer with Lowe and Soler.

Oh no, we have competition for the tank.

Walton performed well while he was here, but regression is overdue:

“He has since put up a great .319/.354/.505 line in 97 plate appearances, though with some luck. He is riding a .371 batting average on balls in play, which is well above average. Presumably, the Angels don’t have much faith in him keeping that going over a larger sample size. For his career, Walton has a .218/.264/.363 line in 311 plate appearances.”

The correct decision imo. I’m sure if they could’ve traded Walton for anything they would’ve

Trout in at DH.

Siri in Center.

Lowe in LF.

Bill James said “Platoon differentials are real”. In reviewing our platoon differentials, we have a number of players with significant ones that we should be taking advantage off as much as possible. Peraza, Siri, and Adell should always play against LH pitching, and Meckler and Schanuel should not. Guzman, so far, does not have much of a platoon differential and Neto’s is much less than most others. You can’t platoon everywhere, but the differentials should be considered as part of roster construction.

Moore continues to tear up AAA with a current 326/456/577 slash line. For reference, Lowe was also tearing it up. The team really needs to think about what they are going to do with him as he has nothing left to prove in AAA. Does he play 2B, 3B, LF, or do they trade him. Kyren Paris, who has been injured a lot this year, is also now starting to hit and especially, walk. Along with Rada, these guys all run the bases well and are successful stealing. They have a glut of guys who can play 2B, SS, and CF, if you also include Siri and Lowe. but they lack corner infielders and corner outfielders.

One thing I noticed is that some of the guys in AAA are walking at pretty good rates but when they are promoted, they become undisciplined and start swinging at pitches off the plate. Just wondering if it had anything to do with who was working with them in AAA as opposed to the majors.

Some of it is pitching but I was just wondering.

Impatiently awaiting the lineup card. According to A.I. (FWIW), Trout should be in the lineup tonight.

I’m even more impatient to watch the final 8 of the World Cup (Go Norway) and Max Holloway vs. Connor McGregor this Saturday.

Trout activated, Walton DFA’d.

Josh Lowe is safe, though.

Good to see Trout back to get some games in before the big night in Philly

Lowe / Walton is a do not care, equally ineffective as a regular.

Speaking of hitting, our primary DH is batting a robust .216 with a .697 OPS.

Walton lasted a bit longer than I anticipated when he was first called up. I assumed it was a classic case of call up the old minor leaguer and give him a few at bats in the majors prior to releasing him. I presume the Trout injury allowed him to have an extended experience.

He certainly hits better than most of the guys on this roster. Best of luck to him.

Are you waiting to see how the scandalous and corrupt FIFA finds more clever ways to assure that their favorite, the racist nation of Argentina, (Argentina are the Red Sox of world soccer) with the media darling Messi can continue to advance ?

ZERO yellow cards for the Argentines vs Egypt when they played a game full of clutching, grabbing and slapping is ridiculous. We won’t even talk about the first Zico goal that was disallowed in an unprecedented move, calling a foul for stepping on a toe 100 yds away from the goal, or Salah getting tripped in the box in the final minutes and no call (if that were Messi what would have happened ??).

My two cents:

I didn’t watch the Argentina vs. Egypt match, so I can’t comment on that game. However, when I played AYSO, granted it was over 40 years ago, we weren’t allowed to grab opposing players or shove them out of the way the way we often see in the World Cup today, and I assume in other professional leagues as well.

Until soccer gets rid of that kind of play, along with the fake injuries and players collapsing to the ground as if a sniper just took them out, I don’t think it will ever gain the same level of acceptance in the U.S. as the major stick-and-ball sports.

From what I’ve read, soccer is now the third most popular youth sport in America. But I don’t think that momentum will last if this kind of behavior continues to be accepted as part of the game.

So, I don’t know how well (Poorly) Kyren Paris is doing, but it must be a special kind of Hell not to be called up for a trainwreck such as the Halos. Paris apparently has the scarlet letter.

I’ve written Paris off, the player that is. Contact rate is abysmal, it’s been that way every stop, we we all got sucked-in on that hot start in 2024 but then he could not hit a beachball. It is very hard a hitter to unscrew that problem in the middle of a career. Godspeed Paris.

I’m tired of seeing Saucedo on the mound. In fact, I’m tired of seeing anybody we know will not be part of the 2027 and on Angels on the field.

Get Luke Murphy up here and see what the kid has.

And I love Pineapple’s idea of bringing up Klassen and Dana and going with a six man rotation.

Klassen is ready! Dana has had a hellish season dealing with sickness and random injuries but I hope we can see him in Anaheim after the deadline.

No idea why Luke Murphy hasn’t been called up.

Detmers mentioning he had to learn how to throw a change up from Rodriguez and nobody on the angel’s coaching staff is inexcusable.

This is historically how pitchers have learned changeups.

Concur. Pretty standard, pitchers learn new pitches from fellow active players or veterans along the way who are not in a formal coaching position.

I understand the concept, but Suzuki is ruining the players with bad decisions and general dumbness. I would like them to receive good coaching. Maddux is helping. The rest are not. Under your theory, we should fire Maddux to embrace a tank. Under mine, we still tank, but look to build up skills. Play the kids, don’t play the Quad A’s or worthless vets on big contracts. I’m looking at you Soler.

I completely agree with your take and have no rebuttal.

I know we disagree on Wash’s effectiveness but what you want in a manager is exactly what Wash brought to the club in elevating all of our younger players and instilling a culture of hard work and belief. We’ve made our bed with Suzuki so might as well let it run it’s course to the bitter end.

I looked up the stats yesterday out of curiosity.

Neto’s error rate increased 60% after Washington’s departure last year, and then increased another 60% this year under Suzuki.

1.6% –> 2.6% –> 4.3%

Are we thinking error percentage is influenced by who is making the line-up card?

TrojanBoiler

Reply to  FungoAle

I think it could be influenced by having a hands-on coach who is well-known to be an excellent infield positional coach. I also think it could be influenced by having a manager who establishes a culture of accountability.

I don’t really care who is making the line-up card.

Agree that he could use someone dissecting his positioning and technique on a nightly basis. Should not take that effort after being taught how to field. Something might be going on upstairs.

Who are you looking to bring in with 60 games left and will that individual(s) want the job?

Let’s say you fire Dirt, promote Gibbons, and keep the rest of the MLB staff — does anything really change?

Angles need to play Soler through the trade deadline in hopes to gain some type of a prospect and shed salary. Besides, no need to promote a kid just to be a DH. That does not seem beneficial for his development.

Let him finish the season as planned. It’s mostly a roster problem. Not even Leyland or LaRussa could win with it.

As Washington said, you can’t make chicken salad from chicken shet.

Maybe a new skip could get us a few more wins but what would be the point?

In Mo and Molly we trust.

a replacement will last until Sept 28th too and is likely to be just another placeholder from inside the organization. The new GM will want his own guy.

But I wouldn’t complain if we got a Buck Showalter for a few months to your point but I don’t see it happening.

Again Mo already said Kurt and his staff will be finishing the season.

Should have kept Wash as infield coach. He has turned Arraez, a perennial bad fielder into a plus defender so far this year.

I like Wash but during his time as manager, Halos had the 4th most errors in baseball in 2024 and they had the 5th most errors in 2025. Thus far in 2026, tied for 5th highest. Maybe as a coach, Wash has more time to work 1-on-1 with a specifc player but the Halos had non defensive players in each poistion when he was here.

Ward
Schanuel
Moncada
Rengifo
Ding-Dong Adell
O’Sloppe

Better drafting and roster building is more influential IMO. Don’t trade for the Soler’s, Kavsada’s, Moncada’s of the league. So obvious too me and don’t play players out of position.

My theory is let the word out, and only trade for fantastic packages. Maybe someone like Milwaukee with great coaching and a deep farm bites. I don’t care who we trade. If we can get a package that gets us Luis Pena and Jefferson Quero, I say, fire away Moz.

I’m onboard with that. For all of Neto’s warts, and boy are there too many of them, he’s still a premium power hitting SS that other teams will value. His value will increase once he stops being a jackass in the field and swinging at every pitch.

Yes, the first of many picks made for the wrong reason and then mismanaged.

At the time it was speculated Bachman could be in a MLB bullpen immediately. That sounded great to help Ohtani to the playoffs.

But then they decided to not capitalize on Bachman’s one really good trait and turn him into a starter, which did not work out.

Also: Fun stat-line from Klassen yesterday for SLC… 6.1 innings, 0 hits, 2 ER. Dude is dealing but oy vey the wildness.

Also: Anyone else surprised that Arol Vera is still in the org, is still only 23 and is, in fact, starting at short for SLC? The not-surprising part: hitting .200.

Strange season this is, we either get good hitting and pitching is off or good pitching and no batting. Would like to see Kurt lead off with Meckler and bat Neto 6th or 7th, just makes sense. With the tank-on, just maybe Mo wants to draft #1 in ’27, so there is that. No matter what avenue that is decided will still have the lunatic owner making the final decisions, without a confirmed sale the team is still going to be mismanaged. I bleed Angels Red 💔

Off season after contract has expired, then they will possibly name a GM or they will start the search will the lockout looming. Could be at All-Star break and promote someone to be interim until end of season as they have already wrote this season off. Really tough to set the over/under. But as just a stab at it would be trade deadline.

I think he finishes the season.

Right now Mozeliak knows the on field product is garbage. He needs to evaluate the front office guys and scouts to see if any are worth keeping.

He’s probably spending more time researching the minor league staff. I would be. The decision to fire Suzuki is already made. See if there are any guys on the farm who are worth keeping.
