LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Pomeranz IL

This is about Zach Neto hitting his two run homer after being moved to the six hole in the batting order. The Angels just placed Drew Pomeranz on the 15 day IL due to left elbow inflammation. They reactivated Ryan Johnson to take his place. Also in that article are discussions of Oswald Peraza and Vaughn Grissom both getting work in at left field and that Kikuchi will remain shut down for a few more weeks.

Roto Riteup for May 13 has a video of Jo Adell’s most recent great catch. Fangraphs also has the Angels down in the pit in their power rankings, although they give the Angels better postseason odds than they give the Rockies. That is probably due to the Angels playing in a more pathetic division than the Rockies do.

Max Fried left Wednesday’s Yankees game after three innings due to elbow soreness. Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez will undergo surgery for a meniscus tear. The Reds designated catcher P. J. Higgins for assignment. The Reds also signed Chris Paddack to a major league deal. Liam Hendriks got a minor league deal with the Cubs.

It looks like Lucas Giolito will finally get into a game this weekend.

Now that Spring Training has just finished, how will the real season go?

I feel like I am the only person here who would like to see if Suzuki would have the same lineups with a better GM in charge. I truly think Perry is pushing his agenda and Suzuki is just going along with it to keep his job.

Suzuki confers with Maddux for all bullpen usage and probably defers to the expert.

We will never know what’s going on behind the scenes, but something definitely doesn’t feel right. The vast majority of you here know more about baseball statistics than me, but I’ve seen these shenanigans before.

TrojanBoiler

I just can’t imagine that there is a scenario where Perry is calling the shots at this level. Why would any MLB manager allow that to happen?

Suzuki doesn’t need the money, and he knows this is a one year contract anyway. Why put up with it?

If he actually wants to have a managerial career, looking like a moron has got to be significantly more damaging than getting fired for trying to do your job. All he would need to do is come public with “I wasn’t allowed to make lineup decisions and the GM fired me when I didn’t follow his orders”.

Either way, Suzuki is an idiot. He’s either the moron calling the shots or the moron who is too chickenshit to take control of the situation that’s making him look like a moron.

Agreed. I highly doubt Perry is going full Dodgers and just handing Suzuki the lineup.

Suzuki seems like the kind of guy who believes in veterans to a fault and thinks they are just one good game away from being their best selves. Like Scioscia was.

At some point Perry is going to have to take Lowe and Moncada away from Suzuki the same way Jerry took Mathis away from Sosh.

The facts Perry won’t do that and Suzuki keeps playing them proves they both suck.

I doubt the whole line up but I’m highly skeptical Kurt is playing Lowe and Moncada on his own. Lowe does not belong on the team but does anyone think Kurt could bench Perry’s big trade acquisition and not hear about it?

Maddon confirmed, Perry and his stat nerds interfered and Joe could not get along with that arrangement.

Joe Maddon apparently didn’t put up with it and was fired.

Suzuki then is just allowing it to happen, which makes him just as stupid and/or responsible as Perry.

Even when he’s hitting, Neto is much better suited in the 6th spot. Just leave him there. It frustrates me that the Angels move people around defensively without thinking. Flipping Adell and Trout made no sense and was a disaster. Playing Adell in LF or CF makes no sense. Peraza is a solid 2B, leave him there and play him every day. If at some point they decide to bring up Guzman, put him at SS. He is superior defensively to Neto and move Neto to 3B. Now you have 3/4 of a very solid infield.

I’d like to thank intern Minasian for his great hire of Brady Anderson to jump start the hitting. That really worked.

Right?? A one year wonder who took roids. Angel Strikeouts are as bad as last year. If Perry wanted a steroids hitting coach he should’ve called Rafael Palmeiro, at least that guy had a great swing.

As far as sports team owners go – I get having an owner that frustrates you. I’ve been a Cowboys fan as long as I can remember. Live in Dallas now – and there are times it’s quite painful. But there’s a big difference. We know Jerry wants to win and is committed to winning. Do I wish he would hire outside football guys to run the football operations and keep his nose out? Sure. But Jerry would be a 10 compared to the 1 the Angels have. I would love Jones to buy the Angels. He would put in the money in development and in scouting – and he’d spend on the team too. As much as he’s driven me nuts over the years – I’d love if he owned the Angels over this slouch. My point is this guy is bad – real bad. I get where Pineapple was at – I’m there too. I will keep my nose in here – but it’s clearly going to be a while before I could get excited about this team so I am going to adopt another to pull for until this ownership changes. Geographically – the Rangers make sense – but I can’t do that. I like some of the guys on the Cubs. I like what the Cards are building too. But I also like the Brewers style of ball – so I think I need someone else. Turks suggested the A’s – but can’t go there – even though I expect them to be a real contender in the next few years – especially after they move. I want a smaller market underdog too – so I’ve been leaning to the Pirates – but watching how Oneil Cruz loafs is just unacceptable that it’s tolerated. Help. Any other suggestions?

It’s on my list. Cincy was my team when I was a kid. I lived in the same apartment complex as Sparky Anderson when he was the base coach for the Padres. His son was my best friend at the time. Used to play catch with Sparky. Then he went to the Reds. Moved to OC a year later and that’s when I became Angels/Reds fan. When the team broke up – I faded away.

I don’t understand this at all. The Angels are my team. No, it’s not in the level of a marriage but it’s similar. Following and rooting for another team is like cheating on your wife. Not quite as bad because baseball is way less important than a marriage and there aren’t any emotional scars that the Angels would feel.

But intellectually I just can’t see having that roving eye especially when the possibilities include teams I’ve learned to dislike or even hate! The closest team to me is the Mariners. Ptooey!!! And bandwagoning is out. I always hate seeing guys walk down the street wearing a cap of the team that just won the pennant. And I have zero connection to places like Pittsburgh or Cincinnati.

I’ll stick with my team since 1977.

Different strokes for different folks. If a Halos fan loves to watch good baseball, they’re not getting that with their team. Should they just give up on something that brings them joy and entertainment for half their year? I see both sides, but won’t begrudge someone for looking elsewhere to scratch their baseball fix given this team’s trash play/management/ownership.

A’s continue to be fun to watch – unlike Pedro’s verdict on the Padres, I feel like there’s a host of likable guys on the team.

Kurtz is on fire again, and Jacob Wilson laid it all out to keep a single in the infield the other night, and landed on the IL with a shoulder subluxation, breaking my wife’s heart. But the next day, they bring up their latest wunderkind, Henry Bolte, who was the hottest hitting prospect in the minors, and he promptly gets on base three times, makes a spectacular centerfield play and legs out an infield single with 70 grade speed.

Nice to have a relentless prospect pipeline that keeps filling every hole.

Of course, their bullpen still kind of sucks, and they just blew a one run lead in the ninth inning with two outs. Sigh.

Guzman with two doubles in SLC last night… 1.185 OPS this month. He’s 22… age equivalent to a 2025 college draftee. But say he keeps it up, starts agitating for a promotion… where do you play him? They haven’t given him many innings at third this year.

Roy Hobbs

He is a superior SS to Neto. He should play SS and move Neto to 3B.

Yeah? I haven’t seen enough of him at short to really know. It’s fair to call Neto a perfectly average defensive MLB shortstop, isn’t it? His adjusted Rtot was 0 in 2025 and his .979 fielding % while above average was not elite. So, you know, you could definitely do worse… and now that I’m looking at Guzman’s ref page, he’s definitely done worse. Doing worse, actually. Has a .938 fielding % this season in SLC across 30 games at short. That doesn’t tell the whole story, obvs… but currently, no, not a better shortstop than Neto.

Jeff Joiner

Made me look it up. FanGraphs has Guzman’s defense at 50/60 and his arm at 60. Those are good to really good but not elite.

Neto’s marks were 50/55 and 60, respectively.

I believe Guzman carried a “glove first” reputation early in his career mostly because his bat was really bad.

Turk's Teeth

60 grade defense for a prospect can arguably approach “elite” at times – it’s better than above average – basically an “all star” tier of tool assessment.

A 60-grade player for instance – in ’25, only five prospects in BA were assigned that grade. I recognize we’re talking individual tools, but we’re talking a full standard deviation above league average

From BA: “An 18-year-old high schooler with 60-grade defense is considered a “defensive whiz” who projects as a future elite fielder.”

Guzman has been aggressively promoted his entire career. He was at AA at age 20 – just really counterproductive for a guy who projects to three 60 grade tools at the most impactful position on the field. Scouts haven’t had much opportunity to eval him against age-appropriate competition.

This season, he’s beginning to exceed the consensus prediction on his hit tool, and greatly improve his swing decisions. He’s put up above average walk rates in many seasons, but has never got his K rate below 20%. This is something very new and promising for him.

Thank you sir. I’m fine with him at either SS or 3B but in my opinion I believe he will be a better defensive SS than Neto. I also agree that the organization isn’t moving Neto anytime soon. However, there is always a possibility that in a few years if those 3B prospects you mentioned the other day come to fruition around the time Neto gets expensive, you could trade Neto for something you need, move Guzman to SS and make room for a young hitting 3B.

Turk's Teeth

No one should evaluate defense in high elevation parks with uneven surfaces and extreme offensive environments by fielding %. In fact, it can even give the opposite indication of the truth at times.

Elite defenders often have high error rates (and lower fielding %) because they have superior range and try to make more low-probability plays. A guy like Elly de la Cruz is illustrative – led the MLB in errors in 2024 (at any position) while producing an elite defensive WAR at +16.7 dWAR.

(Neto produced a +2.4 dWAR mark the same season while producing 11 fewer errors than de la Cruz.)

Having watched Guzman a ton, he’s a plus glove at short, and projects to above average at 3B.

Turk's Teeth
Editor
Legend

He has a 60 grade arm and has played 50 games at third since last season at AA, so 3B is a fine option at this point. I doubt the organization is going to move Neto off short any time soon.

So you’re saying pitching a 38 or 39 year old almost every day in key situations doesn’t work? Gee, never thought of that.

Halos are officially the worst team in the MLB. The sad part is they have actually gotten some decent performances from lesser folk and they are still bad. It looks like the dog days of August will start in June.

I went to the home 8-0 game v Padres where Lowe AND moncada hit home runs! If you could believe that. Might be the only time they’ve help the team this year.

4 games gone to, Angels are 3-1. Here are some high and low lights:

Neto his a leadoff HR 1-0 victory over Ms. Real highlight was Adell robbing 3 home runs! Pitching was good. Trout was awful.

Next game we prob had our best RISP game of the year but still lots of LOBsters but just under 10ks! Went to extra and we won on a Schanny sac fly. Anderson was the only pitcher to no let up a run for us. Frazier had 3 hits, Soler 2.

8-0 angels over padres I mention above. Adell and Lowe with multi RBIs, schanny, Neto, peraza, lowe, Frazier all with multi hits.

Next game was v the BJs and boy did that one piss me off. 18k, 1-6 RISP, 7 LOBsters, just really shitty baseball.

Can’t wait to go again lol

“The only thing that we can do is come here every single day, prepare the best we can, get ready to play in all assets of the game and go out there and perform,” Angels manager Kurt Suzuki said. “And sometimes you’re going to win, sometimes you’re going to lose. Obviously we don’t want this streak, but you can control what you can. That’s come out here, get ready to play. These guys have been doing a good job preparing themselves to play. It’s just not coming on the positive end there. Off day tomorrow. Come back for the Dodger series (starting Friday). Do the same thing and see what happens.”

“That pitcher was good, man,” Suzuki said. “Messick was mixing it up, balls moving. He throws some sinkers. We’re barreling balls up but straight into the ground. Just credit to him. He kept us off balance. He was good.”

It sounds very similar to when Patty “O” said “We can’t do anything about what’s happening on the field” except that in Patty “O”s case, it’s true because he’s just an announcer, but Suzuki is the manager, and for him to say that is ridiculous, and Patty “O” got fired for it. Suzuki just implied that he has no influence regarding whether or not they win or lose. If that’s the case, why is he here?

Happy 28th birthday yesterday Mickey Moniak. What did he do yesterday to celebrate his birthday? In Pittsburg, he went 3 for 5, with a double, triple and home run, while driving in 5 runs. He’s now batting .315 with 20 xbh, including 12 homers and 28 rbi’s. He is second in mlb in ops. Dude is seriously raking. I’ve always liked him. He was a good player for the Angels, his defense wasn’t good and he k’d quite a bit, but he showed power and hit .280 one season before injuries held him back. But he was only 24, 25 years old. So glad he is flourishing now.

I was super high on him when he came to us. His demolishing the ball at the Area Code Games they say was the best anyone has ever looked as a hitter there. Someone (either off season or inside the Rockies) has helped him regain what got him selected #1 in his draft. Good for him. Sometimes the big move that helps guys is to go back to what got them there in the first place.

The funniest part of that article above:

Those all feel like fairly hasty rehab assignments and activations. If a club were breaking convention and had a strong reputation for being on the cutting edge of analytics, that would be intriguing. The Angels have the opposite reputation, so it feels like they’re just winging things. Considering Manoah and Rodriguez both have extensive injury histories, that doesn’t seem like a prudent approach.
