Angels Late Rally Falls Short vs. SD

The Angels bats have been on fire lately and were due for a bad day. Unfortunately for Angels fans, that day was today.

German Marquez was the beneficiary of a swift return to the mean and kept the Angels off the board. Yusei Kikuchi pitched 6 scoreless innings.

For no logical reason, Kurt Suzuki put Ryan Zeferjahn in to a tie game. Zef does what Zef does best and un-tied the game. SD took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 8th that pretty much sealed the deal.

Nolan Schanuel cut the SD lead in half with a key single that only happened because he successfully challenged a bad strike call.

Despite SD having back to back lefties due up to start the 9th, Mensa candidate Suzuki left Nick Sandlin in and he gave up 1 more run to give SD back a 2 run lead at 3-1.

The Angels brought the tying run to the plate in the 9th but Mason Miller was just too much.

Rubber game tomorrow with the CtPG crew in attendance.

It looks like Detmers has been scratched from today’s start.

Three weeks into the minor league season, I thought it was interesting to look at all of the pitchers drafted in the first round, given the Bremner hoohaw at the time.

(sorted by ERA)

Player, level, IP, strikeouts, ERA

Kade Anderson, AA, 14 IP, 22 Ks, 0.64
Seth Hernandez, A, 12 IP, 23 Ks, 0.75
Tyler Bremner, A+, 11.2 IP, 20 Ks, 0.77
Gage Wood, A, 11.1 IP, 19 Ks, 0.79
Jamie Arnold, AA, 13 IP, 20 Ks, 3.64
Kyson Witherspoon, A+, 11.2 IP, 11Ks, 6.17
Liam Doyle, AA, 3.2 IP, 4Ks, 17.18
Kruz Schoolcraft, A, 4.1 IP, 4 Ks, 20.77
Patrick Forbes, injured

The top four have been excellent, and Arnold has been quite good (some of his ERA is due to poor team defense and his xFIP is 2.33). Of course, AA is also markedly more difficult than A ball.

But at this point I think any of the teams representing the top five names there have to be pleased with their showings thus far. Meanwhile, Doyle has been wild AF, and Kyson looks like he has a longer developmental path ahead (though still a robust ceiling).

Nice stats consolidation of the arms. Teams dont seem to allow these arms beyond 4-innings no matter the pitch count.

They’re all on similar pitch limits. Each of Anderson, Arnold, Bremner and Hernandez have pitched 5 innings in recent starts – and seem to be at a roughly a 75 pitch limit. I’m sure that will nudge up to 90-100 over the next 2-3 starts, health permitting.

I don’t understand the decision to play Moncada at third over Peraza. Defense alone makes this a bad decision, and offensively it’s a bad decision based on what we’ve seen from them so far this year.

Peraza’s started five games in a row, and went 0-for-4 with three Ks last night. Seems like just a regular rest day after a tough night.

Moncada did hit a HR in each of his last two starts at 3B, so he hasn’t been a black hole there of late.

I believe that Soler is eligible to return today.

We need some competence from Detmers and fireworks from Trout…

Very difficult to tell right now if we’re real. We have scored the second most runs in the AL and the number of runs a team scores generally has a very high correlation to the number of games a team wins. However, we’re also giving up a lot of runs, only 5 teams have given up more. I feel like the offense is real, but I’m not as convinced about the pitching. We’re .500 because Soriano has essentially thrown 5 shutouts. I’m not sure it’s realistically repeatable for the rest of the season. It also remains to be seen whether Detmers and silent C can remain consistent. As I have said before, It would be nice if the organization decided to fortify the team with a LF Bat, another starting pitcher, and a couple of bullpen arms and see if we can compete. we certainly have the budgetary room.

Last year at this time, the Angels were also 11-11, with many similar traits – a very shallow depth chart in terms of pitching and impact bats, and some players (eg, Kyren Paris) playing well above their base talent levels.

Frazier isn’t going to hit .323 all season. Can Moncada, Schanuel, O’Hoppe or Lowe be counted on to significantly rebound? You could call up Rada to replace Lowe and extend the table setting in the lineup, but Moore and Guzman don’t look Mendoza line ready at the moment. There are only two relievers in the pen at present with FIPs under 4 (Bachman, Zeferjahn), and both have a history of volatility.

Meanwhile, the team doesn’t have a fifth starter at the moment, and Koch and Kikuchi under the hood look more like 4/5 guys. An injury to any one of Soriano, Detmers, Neto or Trout is likely to bury the club. The most basic issue is depth chart / pitching pipeline at the moment, as ever.

Like last year, a lot has had to go right to post a .500 record at this point – most significantly this year, Soriano’s improvement, and Trout’s unlikely renaissance. Can both remain healthy and sustain this past the ASB? Your guess is a good as anyone’s.

Don’t forget Moreno is still the owner and Minasian is still the GM. We all know where that ends up.

This was a much more enjoyable game to watch (through the first 2/3 in any case):

“Three games into his pro career, Bremner is putting up video game-like numbers on the mound. The 6-foot-2 right-hander has an 0.77 ERA, an 0.86 WHIP and a 20/4 K/BB ratio in 11 2/3 innings. Opposing batters are hitting just .154 against Bremner, who owns a ridiculous 45.5 percent K rate.”

You aren’t gonna win too many games only scoring one run-This loss is on the offense.

The blowpen definitely gets an assist though.

And Suzuki’s awful management of it. Same as it ever was.

That game didn’t end well but I just saw a clip with this commentary: “Eckstein scores, Erstad scores, here comes Salmon”
