LA Angels Thursday News Crash:

The Angels claimed Kaleb Ort off waivers from the Yankees and DFAd Wade Meckler in the corresponding move. Maybe they think Meckler will make it through waivers unclaimed. The Yankees also designated Michael Siani for assignment.

Jhonathan Diaz just got outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma.

The Nationals claimed infielder Tsung-Che Cheng from the Mets and DFAd Konnor Pilkington in the corresponding move.

Reese McGuire got a minor league deal with the Brewers. The Rockies acquired infielder Eduard Julien and right-hander Pierson Ohl from the Twins for Jace Kaminska and cash. They will also designate outfielder Yanquiel Fernandez for assignment. The Rockies also traded reliever Angel Chivilli to the Yankees in exchange for T.J. Rumfield. This deal was the reason for the designation of Michael Siani.

You are going to put Soler in left field …. at Angels Stadium? Oh boy, that is going to be entertaining. If I’m the opposing manager I’m putting a lefty on the mound every game if a series.

January is the last month without baseball. Three weeks from today Cactus League play begins and the Angels play their first game the following day.

College baseball starts a week sooner than that.

Coaching staff formally announced, very happy Tim Buss is back.

Came over with Maddon, then kept on with Nevin, Wash and now Suzuki. Righteous.

Outside of Maddux, my favorite part of the coaching staff is having dudes who played major league ball this decade (Suzuki, Eaton, Stassi). Having coaches who are receptive to analytics because it was a part of their playing careers and know how to apply them is a welcome sight after Wash, Nevin, Maddon.

What day is the preseason Fan Fest scheduled, and what day is the infamous “Moving Day” where you could get the excess give away merch by the bagful? ………….

ESPN ranks our farm system 27th. If you’re not last, you’re first!!

The Angels have bounced between the 23rd-ranked and 30th-ranked farm system over the past five years. Zach Neto, Jose Soriano, Reid Detmers, Jo Adell, Logan O’Hoppe and Nolan Schanuel have shown some returns in that period and I’m optimistic about some of the pitchers from the past few drafts and George Klassen, acquired in a trade.

Denzer Guzman and Nelson Rada look as if they could be regulars soon, while Joswa Lugo and Raudi Rodriguez have some potential in the lower minors. The cupboard isn’t bare, but it’s not quite as stocked as you would like.

I’m looking into Klassen in more detail. His underlying metrics are better than his ERA. He’s an interesting guy to follow as camp opens.

There’s an expressway to playing center field open for Rada. He just has to prove he can hit a little. Another fun camp story.

…and if he can’t hit, he can share jerseys with Teodosio and reduce the clubhouse attendant’s laundry duties.

I met a baseball writer, east coast guy, when I was at Cooperstown, he was there for the Ichiro induction, and we talked a little baseball, when he found out I’m an Angels fan, the first name he mentioned was Klassen. He seemed pretty high on him being something in MLB.
