LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Awardless

A Nelson Rada article from Rhett Bollinger.

No Angels even managed to get on the “2025 All Awardless Team.”

The Rangers have re-signed Chris Martin. Jared Shuster got a minor league deal with the Cardinals while Ali Sanchez and Zack Short got their minor league deals with the Yankees organization. The Cubs signed Christian Bethancourt to a minor league deal.

The Athletics DFAd Ken Waldichuk to make room for Jeff McNeil. The Mariners signed Rob Refsnyder for one year at $6.25 Million. The Phillies just signed right-hander Zach Pop. The Nationals signed left-hander Foster Griffin.

The three most interesting players to watch this Spring will be Nelson Rada, Grayson Rodriguez & Tyler Bremner with the latter having a Spring invite based on what I read elsewhere.

The future looks significantly brighter if one becomes a #1 or upper tier #2 (Bremner) and the other (Rodriguez) becomes a reliable #3 or #4.

I mean, at some point, some of these pitchers that we draft/trade for have to pan out. Why not these two.

I’d throw CMo in there too. Can he win the 2nd baseman job out of ST and become an impact MLBer this year? Heaven knows we need him too.

You know what else would be sick? Kikuchi has a 2nd straight fantastic 1st half and we cash him in at the deadline. And our young arms — Soriano, Detmers, GRod, Dana — flourish under Maddux. That would be sweet.

Rada is the focal point for sure. We harp on Angels pitching, and justifiably so for the most part, but getting a good defense will help with that.

Soler is an interesting story IMO. If he can be healthy and resemble his normal self, that’s a huge boost to the lineup.

Pros and cons for free agents signing with the angels

pros:

beautiful Southern California
great weather
the fans must be very loyal, as they haven’t all gone screaming for the exits

cons:

not so much as even going to sniff the playoffs for years
a total idiot for an owner
a disaster for a front office
basically, a total sh*t show
high taxes
other teams have loyal fans too
other areas can also be beautiful

pretty much explains our lack of signing anyone significant

The Org has a very poor reputation which is a big minus unless the team is willing to overpay substantially

Cons. High taxes and the crack head roaming the streets ready to rob you when you get gas.

Pro- Artie’s money is free. Don’t even have to show up to get it. Hell, apparently you don’t even have to be alive to get in on it

I know the hitting instructor for a pile of MLB hitters. Two of them are ex-MVPs, so they have money. He’s told me he asks why none of them will play in California, mostly because it would make his in-season life easier. A couple of these guys are from here.

They laugh and mention the taxes… and one of the MVPs said he can winter anywhere. The taxes matter. Not just the tax on their salary, but apparently it also matters when you are trying to maybe invest in other areas of life with all that baseball money. I may think I wouldn’t care if I had 200M but apparently I would.

Instructor also told me a lot of players actually are VERY aware of how much they pay in taxes and get kind of hung up on how a place like California spends their huge tax gouge. He thinks they make too big a deal out of that cause most states suck. But I also get it. If you are literally taking 10M off me every year and I don’t see where ANY of that money is doing anything good I might get a little uptight.

It sounds like, unless a player is getting an extra huge contract or thinks he’s much more likely to win a ring California teams are kind of boned. It’s not just us. Look how easy a time the Giants have getting players to sign… Padres too to an extent. It’s not like it’s impossible. But San Francisco, San Diego, Orange County? Those are desirable places who mostly have good fans but they don’t seem to land the bigger names all that easy.

I buy higher taxes being something that works against California teams, but miss me with the “players want to know where their taxes are going”. The vast majority of these rich meathead dudes could not give less of shit about public policy lol.

New York has both a high state tax rate and an additional jock tax. Boston isn’t a tax haven, either.

Of course, they both get more media exposure which leads to endorsement opportunities.

But, yeah, tons of these guys are from Texas and Florida so I can see them thinking “California bad.”

speaking of jock tax, that’s a weird thing about Portland’s effort to get a team. The idea being floated is that the ballplayers, home and away, will be taxed and that money will be used to pay off the cost of a stadium.

Dear Santa. Free agents that are still available and may be willing to languish in the SoCal sun while men with 1/20 their talent, ability and work ethic bitch about them….

Adam Frazier.
Isaiah Kiner-Falefa
Willie Castro
Miguel Andujar
Austin Hays
Max Kepler
JJ Bleday
Nabil Crismatt
Austin Gomber
Aaron Civale
Jakob Junis
Zack Littell
Jordan Montgomery
Chris Paddack
Andrew Chafin
Brent Suter
Joey Lucchesi
Ryan Borucki
Jalen Beeks

Any of these guys would make a great practical gift that the whole family can enjoy but not get overjoyed about. Perfect for the fan who likes getting socks and underwear so he doesn’t have to go out and get them. Please stuff one or two of these men in a huge sock and leave them under the hats at the Big A.

Great list. You just did Minasian’s work for him. Maybe he can push back from the buffet for a moment and get something done.

2027 draft

We can do it!

Actually, no joke, it would be pretty cool if we showed some signs of improvement this year but still managed to pick top 5 again. The White Sox are kind of in that spot now. They have some good young guys coming up, they have a low payroll, they have some good farm hands. They won’t be GOOD but they will likely be better, AND they have the #1 pick. They have hope.

At present, the Halos look like they are heading for last place in the West. So you may get your wish.

There’s an interesting angle to this: minor league baseball will continue in 2027 in the event of a lockout.

So it the Angels do get an early draft pick, that class along with the Bremner class would get a full year of development without any sense of urgency from Arte and Perry to move up the big leagues.

1. Don’t buy out Rendone
2. Tank 2026 unintentionally
3. Pray for a top 3 pick in the 2027 draft
4. Hire new GM
5. Clean salary cap sheet (outside of Trout). Extend Neto, and depending on a potential lockout, play in free agency again

This is where I’m at. Arte selling would be ideal, but it sure seems like this jackass is dying before he sells

Yup.

You know, other than Kikuchi this team is actually looking pretty rebuild rather than reload now. Sure, this happened so slowly that we should probably off load Adell/Detmers/Neto. We are stuck with Trout. But it’s looking pretty rebuildy.

Shame we didn’t trade anyone for prospects the last three years so we’d actually have a farm to go with our 90 loss MLB scrapper. But hey. When you’re THAT close to being sort of close to making the play offs you gotta keep the fans happy and go for it.

The Chicago Sad Socks look likely to pull an A’s on us this year too. Between who they called up last year and who they’ve got in the pipeline for the next couple seasons they have about ten 50 grade or above prospects coming up and some 45 grade guys like Lodise I think may be valuable too. Then they pick #1 this year. They trade away guys who are good and clearly aren’t committed to be the bestest they can.

The only team that will clearly be competing for worst place with us this year and next is the Rockies… maybe the Nats if they trade some guys away.

But hey. Reload. Gotta compete in 2026.

Dark horse gamble. The Tigers window will close semi-fast because of payroll issues. The Royals will stay nibblers. The Guardians are already slipping. 2027 or 28 you may see the Sox take the central.

Yup. Last place looks likely. Baring some pretty bad luck the A’ss will be better than us. We’ve finally got some teams as shitty as everyone thought they were back in the Soth days. Gotta keep that sewer water flavored JuJu going… see if we can get the Big A to catch fire or a player arrested for being a contract killer or something. Maybe Bremner’s arm explodes so we can all told each other so.

With the help and power of the sad donkey we can do it!

With the way Minasian picks from the bottom of who’s available, I don’t think it matters.

In my IIWPM, (which I sent by “contact us” but wasn’t posted) I had Refsnyder in a one year deal for $4.25 Million. I also went for Schwarber – but it was a lot in fun trying to manufacture a competitive team. I gave it a bid (I relied on a Rendon restructure) – but of course know where we really stand and realized even that would leave us behind. Probably best to eat that this year and see if we can find some diamonds in our youth.

I’m probably going to give up on mine or make a pretty significant pivot if I want to use current free agent availability. A bunch of my targets have already been snatched up.
