LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Ratings Bonanza

Last Saturday night the Dodgers wrapped up an absolutely epic World Series with an extra innings win to repeat as world champions. This was one of the best postseasons and World Series I’ve ever witnessed and as a pure fan of the game I loved it.

Game 7 was an overwhelming success and global event. Over 27 million Americans tuned in to the game. Night after night the numbers were good, with the Series averaging about 16 million viewers per game in the States. That 27 million number means more people watched Game 7 of the World Series than the college football championship game, Game 7 of the NBA Finals, and the March Madness final.

But unlike in previous eras this truly is a World Series nowadays. Adding in Canada and Japan, the game brought in over 51 million viewers. The Series averaged nearly 33 million viewers across the three baseball crazy countries.

For the fourth time in 6 years the World Series outdrew the NBA Finals. As far as post season ratings go, the sport is in great shape. Let’s hope the interested parties realize the positive momentum and work towards a collective bargaining agreement.

The End of the World Series means the beginning of the off season. We’ll start our If I Was Perry pieces next week. In the meantime, the Angels did something we all like.

Maddux is a universally respected pitching coach and the move is a bit of a shock. Yes, he has family in the area and the Rangers are undergoing a management change, but a 1 year deal in a shipwreck of an organization seems like an offer he could beat elsewhere. Either way, I’m stoked he’s here and the Angels wasted no time snagging him a new toy.

If I tried to recap all of the players waived, outrighted, claimed, and changing teams this week this column would be a mile long. Suffice it to say, mlbtraderumors.com is your friend for the next few months.

The above mentioned managerial change in Texas is due to Bruce Bochy stepping down. Many figured he’d find his way back to San Francisco and he has. Not as a manager, though, Bochy will be a special assistant to his former catcher Buster Posey.

Certain guys just belong certain places. For Bochy, that place is SF. I’m sure the fans will be happy to see him milling around Scottsdale Stadium next March.

After the playing season there is awards season. Rawlings announced the Gold Glove Award winners this week and the list features 9 first timers.

A site I need to link more often, fieldingbible.com, also released their defensive awards list. Congrats to Patrick Bailey for being the best defensive player in all of baseball.

If you look at the team rankings, the Angels finished 28th out of 30 teams with -45 defensive runs saved. I know we all point the finger at pitching, but until the defense is sound the pitchers will always suffer.

In my off season piece I plan on emphasizing defense and on base percentage. We have the dingers. Who will I acquire? We shall see.

For those of you wishing to join along in the off season fun, FanGraphs has their list of Top 50 free agents and salary estimates available. Not to be outdone, MLBTR published their list and guesstimates as well.

MLBTR has their arbitration salary estimate list out as well as a comprehensive list of free agents they update frequently.

Just released yesterday is the list of players receiving a Qualifying Offer. Remember, the QO is a one year deal worth about $22 million. If the player rejects it a club signing him will be hit with draft and international bonus slot penalties.

Intern Yorke Lee is a talented writer who is learning more about baseball through this experience. He published two nice pieces on potential Japanese third base targets. I recommend you read them both. One and Two.

On the flip side, I can talk baseball with intern Landon all day and he’s learning to go from strict newspaper writing to finding his own voice. He published a nice piece on Raudi Rodriguez who is tearing up the Arizona Fall League.

Obviously the biggest news around here centers on the Tyler Skaggs trial. This case is such a microsim of modern day America. It is like a soap opera with money, power, and drugs all culminating in the death of a young man and devastation all around him. Except every single bit of this is real.

Angels team doctor Craig Millhouse prescribed Eric Kay over 600 opioid pills from 2009 to 2013. In hindsight that looks like obvious addiction, but back then the medical industry was using a bogus, paid by Pharma study saying Oxy wasn’t very addictive. Millhouse prescribed Vicodin and Norco which are in the same boat.

If you haven’t watched Dopesick on Hulu, I highly, highly recommend it. One family pretty much started this epidemic and has laughed all the way to the bank as our family members and friends have died left and right. The only shocking thing is that the loopholes in our “healthcare” system weren’t exploited to this degree before they decided to do so.

Meanwhile a former clubhouse attendant in Tempe testified he saw Kay crush and snort a pill and that Kay’s drug use was known within the organization. Sorry for the paywall links, but that’s where I can find coverage.

After all that, let’s get back to a better time and age. Weaver had enough of this douchebag and did what needed to be done.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. We will celebrate my sister-in-law’s birthday among a host of other things I have going on. Keep plugging away. We have lots of days off coming up.

I can see why everyone’s pointing and laughing at picking up Laweryson off the Twins scrap heap. Sure he has a 1.2 WHIP with a 10/3 K/BB split in 327 MiLB innings, but when he finally got seven innings of MLB pitching in he totally failed and had a 0.522 WHIP with a K per inning. Plus he went to the University of Maine. They probably use wood baseballs there. So lame.

If I were PTP and wanted to pull something crazy out of my ass I’d ask Mike to check and see if his brother Greg Maddox wants to do some consulting. Find a couple AA/AAA that Greg can teach to pitch at the lab… or make Silent C move in with him…. but get Greg to work in partnership with Mike Maddox. That would be DOPE!

Thinking cause we got Maddox we should jump to sign Tyler Mahle before anyone else. Has had injuries, but his stuff is great. Did well under Maddox last year, plus he’s a local kid from Westminster. Cheaper than many of the other FA pitchers, worth the risk?

It’s time for my favorite game show. DUMPSTER DIVE DIAMONDS!

Guys who have a glimmer of a hope of maybe being useful….

Dylan Carlson is a solid yet injury plagued of late OF who can cover all four spots. He comes with all four limbs and a lifetime OBP that is average, and would be slightly above average without said injury issues. He’s perfect for a team and fanbase that is stupid enough to just decide that Nelson Rada is ready and we don’t need anyone else cause pitching or a team or fanbase that is stupid enough to want to pay Cody Bellinger to keep the cellar warm.

Also on the menu from the bins behind the store is another broken Oriole, Daniel Johnson. He is fast. He plays all the outfields. He has had a total of 143 MLB at bats and been crap. But in NINE MiLB seasons he has a .781 OPS and .331 OBP with some steals. Quad A greatness surely awaits him in SLC, but who knows? He may be useful to us, especially if we do something like trade Ward and play Teo/Rada. It’s good to have options.

Next up is SS/2B/CF Liover Peguero. As a semi-fan of the Pirates, I know this guy. He was the tits as a SS prospect through 2023, but like all Pirates position prospects, the bad ju ju in Pitt broke him and he has sucked in 24/25. He is really talented though, and there may be “more there” but the Bucs are pretty stacked up with better infield prospects. Mayhaps he could get his act together in Alabama/SLC?

Want some former 1st Round pick glory? Sure you do. A selection that only has a few yellow price reduction stickers on it and has only been out in the sun the last few hours is Kameron Meisner. He too can play all the outfields and has an .800 OPS/.365 OBP in six years of MiLB play and features no drop off at higher levels.

Also, if you have been weepy for years about not drafting a different middling pitcher in the first round of the 2017 draft Alex Faedo is available and you can sloppy sevenths on him.

None of these guys are gonna move your old sad needle much. But we are a crap team with a roster full of holes. We also have a farm that is barren above A+ especially on the field. It won’t do us any harm at all to invite a dozen players like this to Tempe and see if two of them work out to be magic dream heroes. For example, say ANY of those OF end up being a solid #4 OF. All that means is Rada has a little less pressure on him, but isn’t blocked really, while Teo can still be stashed in the minors even though I love him irrationally. There’s not much to lose here.

Definitely think you’re on the right track with focusing on defense and OBP. Since the Angels probably can’t play in the deep end of the pitching pool, I’d probably focus on health among the lesser arms.

Defense, pitcher durability, OBP and quality contact.

Stay on the field, catch the ball, put the ball in play.

Baseball stuffs.

Talking payroll percentage in regard to players taking up over 50% of the cap money is just not accurate as if the cap is 260 million and Redone is at 38mil, Trout 37mil, that total is 75 million and takes up a whole lot of % and brings little results over the course of 7 years. Throw in Soler, Upton, Albert, Gioloto, or any number of players in any year and you would see a whole lotta waste. Numbers for any sort of comparison can be manipulated. Example currently on television, “this product is 125% more effective, so get yours today at” listed at 5-10 stores well 125% better than what? Than who? Most Q will be turned down as the potential totals received will be much higher. @026 is not the year to strike out of high-priced FA as I contend the future is in trading, coaching, teaching, and drafting for the future with a GM with experience behind him.

I’m confused. What is your first sentence trying to claim?

I think you think you are talking about payroll over 50% of team revenue? I think someone was talking about that yesterday?

That’s why Weaver is one of my all-time favorite Angels.

Ran into Weaver at the Great Wolf Lodge once. We both were there with our kids. He strolled around like a regular dude. Talked to me and my wife for a bit. Couldn’t have been cooler

My problem when that sort of thing happens to me (did with an astronaut), I go all fanboy and get tongue-tied.

Being from Santa Barbara, I have interacted with a lot of the famous folks. They mostly seem like they can act like a normal human being most of the time when people say hi to them.

The funniest was George Lucas. I got in the elevator at my old work and there he was. He even had a fking Skywalker Ranch jacket on. I was trying to figure out if it was really him or not. Didn’t want to stare. Didn’t want to bug him, trapped in an elevator alone with me and all.

So he smiles at me and says “Hey there, I’m George” and sticks out his hand. Made it super easy to just tell him it’s really cool to meet him and then we’re off on our way.

I understand the innuendo the Skaggs family is hoping for from the trial. Based on the above, however, in reality the evidence seems to be Kay was prescribed 600 Vioxx during 2009-2013 (five years). That amounts to less than one every two days. Kay likely claimed a back injury or some other pain he needed the drug for. The Halos know Kay was taking drugs. The Vioxx would cover that. And Kay once broke up a pill and sniffed it. No one knows what the pill was. I suppose the conclusion is supposed to be by sniffing it rather than swallowing it, this is worse.

The above is all the evidence actually shows. They want the jury to make conclusions far beyond the above, but one could argue that would be speculation.
