Angels lose home run derby to the Royals

Final game in KC, and the Angels had a chance for a road sweep. All they had to do was win today with Hendricks on the mound. Well, the old vet is the exact opposite of last night’s rookie. A slow throwing precision pitcher where the fast ball is 87 and not 97. How did that go anyway? Well, he went 6 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits striking out NONE and walking 3. A poor quality start, but a quality start nonetheless.

No strikeouts, 3 walks, 3 hits, but 2 were home runs

Too bad he did not get the win, as the bullpen blew the lead for him. Or maybe you can blame the offense that kept leaving men on in scoring position all game. 4 LOBSTERS in 8 innings isn’t horrible, but with how thin the margins were today, it shares some of the blame.

Highlighted Recap

The Angels struck first with a 3 run home run in the first inning by Luis Rengifo.

3-0 Angels

Too bad Hendricks gave up a hr as well in the 2nd for Frazier’s 1k hit

3-1 Angels

Hendricks gave up yet another home run in the 4th.

3-2 Angels

Just 2 ER for Hendricks, yet another good start by this rotation. Too bad he wouldn’t get the win as Fermin gave up a home run in the 7th.

3-3

That is 4 home runs in this game, 1 by the Angels, 3 by the Royals. What kind of modern baseball is this?

Make that 5 home runs, as the Royals hit their 4th in the 8th.

4-3 Royals

Angels faced Estevez in the 9th, their old closer. He made quick work of the Halos. Angels lose 4-3.

Upcoming

The Angels face the A’s this weekend for 3 games. Final games vs A’s this season.

2/3 in KC, that’ll work!

I’d like to see the club roll with the following top 5:

Neto
Rengifo/Nolan
Ward
Adell
Trout

This is unlikely but, whatever.

Nice series against a fairly tough AL Central team that is fighting for playoff position. The Angels certainly seemed to care and a 4-3 roadtrip is pretty darn good all things considered.

Actually 5-5

It was a 4 game series with Astros

1-2 v Texas
2-2 v Astros
2-1 v KC

It’s nice that the team can give a solid squad like the Royals a run for their money. It was three strait squeekers, but still a good series for us, and mostly with scrubs for our scrubs too.

What good is it to talk about how really well Hendricks pitched when you cut his night short

Angels proved two things tonight everyone knew. First, if you can only score 3 runs, you are going to lose more often than you win. Second, if you have a one run lead in a low scoring game and you’re going to Fermin and then Zeferjahn, you are going to have a hard time winning. No surprise.

Not a total baseball downer tonight, the Doyers just got swept by the Bucs. The Doyers vs the Angels/Bucs this year are 2-10. The Doyers against the Angels, Brewers and Astros this season are combined 0-15. This makes me feel better when the Halo doesn’t shine tonight.

Yet somehow the Dodgers remain 16 games over .500 and have a 2 game lead in the division. That means they are 31 games over .500 against all teams that are not the Angels, Brewers and Astros.

I’m thinking the Teodosio experiment has run its course. He may catch the ball like Mays but he hits like shit.

I’m thinking the Trout batting in the three slot has run its course. Of Trout playing at all.

Unless Angels want to pay a team to take Trout (and why would the Angels do that, as well as why would any team want the 2026 version of Trout), he’s in the lineup from now until near the end.
Perhaps in his last year, he plays part-time, a la Miguel Cabrera in his final years.

Not too sure of the options but the bench has a bunch of .200 to .220 hitters. So the offense would not get a significant boost. I’d take the sure fire skill and the glove patrolling center and play the run prevention game. But agree, Teo should be nowhere near 57/22/55 freeways next year.

Like Willie Mays Hays of Major League?

Unless Angels can get a 0.270-0.280 hitter who is a slightly above-average outfielder, I’d like to see Teo in CF for 2026.

There’s no point having an outfielder hitting 0.230-0.240 (unless you’re also getting 30+ HR and 90+ RBIs – a la Jo Adell) while putting Teo on the bench or demoting him to the minors.
