Dr. Seuss books are more believable than much of what happened in Anaheim tonight. Our favorite punching bag was a hero, right field was the Bermuda Triangle, and a picture of a critical error would be too outlandish to believe.
The shoe on the ceiling moment came early in the game when Jacob deGrom was taken deep by Kevin Newman.
That staked the Angels to a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning. Normally, you get 2 runs against deGrom and you are done scoring for the evening. But not on Wacky Wednesday on a Monday Day. More on that later.
Gustavo Campero decided to make his impression felt in the top of the 5th inning. First he came sliding across the edge of right field in a vain attempt to corral a would’ve been single, maybe double. The ball went by him and kicked around until Rangers first baseman Josh Smith was standing on third base. Silent C intentionally walked Seager before walking Marcus Semien to load the bases with two outs.
Then Campero did this:
Ok, so now we’re getting to the weird sisters walking to school territory, then it got wackier.
After absolutely bricking that ball and costing the Angels 2 runs, Campero scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the inning. Campero never ran so hard in his life, scoring from first on a Zach Neto double.
There’s no way Jacob deGrom would give up more than 3 runs, though, right? Nah.
Taylor Ward took him deep to extend the Angels lead.
With two outs and nobody on, right field stuck again like a policeman with a shoe on his hand.
That would be the worst play of the game, series, probably month if not for the Campero gaffe earlier in the game. I’m not sure what curse was laid upon right field this evening, but it made for some quality enterainment.
Luis Rengifo followed that Garcia brainfart with a home run to right field to extend the Angels to a 6-3 lead.
The Angels bullpen was tasked with going 4 and a 1/3rd innings tonight but managed to get the team over the finish line for the win. Oddly enough, that was the least wacky part of this game.
Kenley Jansen has been one of Perry’s best signings. Cleary his best bullpen signing. He recorded the final 4 outs, notching his 2nd save in as many days. If this is the last time we see him in an Angels uniform, I hope he realizes how much we appreciate him.
Light up the Halo! Angels win 6-4!
