LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Draft Time

What a wild ride this last week was for us Angels fans. After being on the losing end of two extra innings heartbreakers in Toronto the team won insane games both Monday and Wednesday against Texas.

I was at the slugfest on Wednesday, scoring last minute Diamond Club tickets, and had the privilege of talking to my baseball hero Wally Joyner for the second time in my life. Our first meeting was at a charity dinner a few years ago. I’d arrived and checked in about 20 minutes before Wally and when he went to check in the lady at the front told him “Mr. Joiner has already checked in.” They held him at the door for a minute until the confusion was cleared. We had a laugh about it then and he remembered it this time and again laughed. So, I kind of have a little bit with the guy whose poster was on my wall for years when I was a kid. Here we are at that dinner.

That entire game on Wednesday is our Highlight of the Week. Everybody on the team had a big moment that propelled the team to that win.

As far as fun individual performances this week, it isn’t often you win on a walk off walk. But Nolan Schanuel pulled that off Monday night. He’s clearly coming into his own in many ways and I’m enjoying seeing more of his personality come out. He loves playing the game and clearly loves winning.

For the second straight week, Kevin Newman did something useful for the club. His new baby will be proud. This week he soaked up three innings of pitching in a blowout loss. Perhaps he needs to move to the mound.

Getting overlooked in the Toronto series is just how good Jo Adell continues to be. He hit a massive, game tying 3 run bomb on Friday night and also notched a double. If you take a look at his baseballsavant page, he looks like one of the game’s best. Definitely follow that link for a deep dive, but here’s the true highlight:

His bat speed is elite, his K% is about league average, and his exit velocity is elite. He’s barrelling up the ball well. All that leads to a ton of red digital ink, indicating Jo Adell is currently among the best of the best in Major League Baseball.

The real Highlight of the Week across baseball came in San Francisco. How about a walk off inside the park home run? By a catcher no less. Absolutely incredible.

Up next is a three game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks then the All Star Game. Congratulations to the Angels lone All Star Yusei Kikuchi, who got a little emotional when he learned he received the nod.

It has been a while since a free agent signing came here and met expectations, much less become an All Star. Between the youth movement and some decent signings, we could see a good team fairly soon.

Speaking of the youth movement, it will get some fresh blood on Sunday and Monday.

Turk’s Teeth has been crushing it with his draft coverage. Get caught up on all of his pieces now then join the live Draft Thread I have scheduled for Sunday at 3.

First round thoughts.

Bats rounds 1-3

Bats rounds 4-7

Bats, the outsiders

Lists abound and we’ve been linking quite a few of them. If you are just getting into MLB Draft frenzy, I like this overview by Yahoo as a primer.

What the Angels do at #2 is a huge storyline both here and throughout the league, but it isn’t the only storyline to follow as the draft unfolds.

USA Today’s mock draft would make most of us very happy.

ESPN’s prospect breakdown is really good reading as we get closer to Selection Sunday (oops, wrong sport there).

In case you’re wondering, my draft wish list goes in this order: Anderson, Arnold, Witherspoon (probably under slot), Arquette. Like many/most Angels fans I’m concerned about the potential for injury with Doyle. Keep in mind, my opinion is about 2% as informed as Turk’s Teeth but I am learning a bit from the master.

From around baseball:

The Dodgers have lost 6 in a row as of this writing. If they can manage to put a 0 behind that 6, I’d be ecstatic.

Baltimore has stolen Turk’s idea and traded for one of the few tradeable draft picks. Tampa Bay picks up several years of a really good reliever in the deal. Baltimore’s draft war chest is huge, a league leading $19 million in bonus pool, 4 of the first 37 picks, and 7 of the first 93. In a draft that is said to have depth but not star power, this is a great spot for Baltimore.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. I’ll be enjoying some beach time with my family and hope to catch one game at the Big A at some point.

So. Just a mental prep note here since it looks like we all understand that we need to sell now.

First. No one is giving us a top 5 prospect for any of the guys we want to trade. You will likely have not heard of any the prospects we get and none of them will have a bunch of 65s and 70s in their grades. If we can get any trades done.

Second. If we can’t trade a guy. Perry isn’t gonna come out and say “I tried to trade Rengifo and no one would offer much of anything for him.” If that is something you need in order to feel like the GM tried to make some trades otherwise you’re gonna yell and scream about holding onto the guy congrats, you’re stupid.

Perry WILL come out and say something lame like “we feel we are better with Soler on the team with what he brings…” because that’s his job.

We are VERY unlikely to get “young controllable MLB players”. So stop wanting that.

Other than Ward and Hendricks (sort of) we are pretty short on guys with much actual value. So getting a lot of trades done will not be easy, even if I want them to happen.

If Holliday is there at #2, I hope we take him. Seeing pics of him next to his brother, Jackson, he’s a good 4 inches taller. I’m betting he’s a top 10 3B with some serious power by the time he’s 23, which is a while away, but I’m willing to wait.

They need to take best player available, not who can help the team the fastest.

Honestly, with no clear wunderkind at the top of the draft, I’m sort of open to everything. I don’t like Doyle or Arquette much, but what the hell do I know? I’d even be cool with taking Tyler Bremner overslot and then using the money on that beast Taitn kid from Iowa or something.

Hell, even what we need, corner OF and 3B, isn’t THAT hard to come by if you draft young up the middle guys and train em in the new positions. I guess I’ll be most frustrated if they draft tons of pitching and 1B.

You got to meet WALLY! Hell yeah bro, that’s awesome.

This is important I think. I think we are all aware but may not be totally attuned to how crippling it is when we sign guys, especially large contract guys, and they get hurt or just suck. We have the ability to have a large payroll, but it’s still finite. Pissing away 80M dollars a year hurts. Even to a billionaire whose money is mostly tied up in a non-liquid team. Arte has literally pissed away a billion dollars on expensive players that fail for one reason or another.

NOT having that, other than Trout, could be really nice. The roster doesn’t feel held hostage. There seem to be more options. I’d be pretty happy if we never sign “the big FA poobah” ever again. Extend our boys, sure. That adds value to the team via building an attached fan base. But if our big FA pick ups next year are Merill Kelly, Jordan Montgomery, Max Kepler, Gregory Soto, Luis Urias type guys I’m cool with that. Especially if, when the time is right, Arte trades for some star that’s about to get paid big in order to get that ace we need when the team is good.

I don’t think I really want a huge FA spend just because Pujols and Rendon (and Ohtani) are off the books.

I want to trade him, but I also understand why they may keep Ward. Those of us who love to complain about Ward need only look at available LF in FA this winter to see why they’d extend Ward.

Either way, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD BUILD THE FARM UP. It’s not just that FAs are expensive, it’s that there just aren’t many FAs worth a damn at all now days.

Extend Ward! now you’re catching on

as the young talent continues to grow there will be time to invest in quality FA to round out and fill the holes. Maybe next summer.

If you read my series, you’ll see that it’s not either-or this year. It’s a pretty deep class for bats in the top 200 picks, but there are not a lot of advanced bats at the very top. Guys like Irish and Arquette would be mid-first-rounders in most other years. So you’re either accepting the longer time horizon of a prep pick, or grabbing an arm that can help by as early as next season.

The Angels only have two viable starters at the moment – Soriano and Kikuchi. The two vets are free agents in the offseason, and Koch wouldn’t still be pitching on almost any other MLB club right now.

The Angels have their pick of 5+ worthy arms in the first round. Still seems the best route to me, and go bat-heavy with subsequent picks.

On my own board – and I’ll drop it into Jeff’s Sunday draft feature to follow along – I have Arnold as my fallback, but Ethan Holliday immediately behind.

Mentioned this in a thread yesterday, but Anderson seems the optimal pick to me, and then Holliday is the BPA, and Arnold the best organizational fit.

YMMV, but I usually have a handful of players in each tier, and one tends to be the best “Angels fit” and one is the consensus industry best-player (BPA).

Like last year, the BPA when the Angels took Moore was Braden Montgomery, and the best Angels fit was Cam Smith. Both totally reasonable choices.

The tweet is confusing because he is responding to his own previous tweet, not seen there.

He’s talking about Liam Doyle, who didn’t submit his medicals at the Combine.

That’s a little suspect, but what he’s referring to in terms of bonus is this: if a player shows up to the Combine, is in good health, and submits their medical records for review, then teams are not allowed to discount their bonus more than 25% of the slot value. The Angels’ first round slot value, for example, is $10.25M, so the Angels will have to give a signing bonus of at least $7.69M to any eligible draftee who submitted medicals at the Combine.

The suggestion here is that maybe Doyle is being strategic, and is willing to accept a slightly lower discounted bonus by withholding his medicals – like maybe he thinks he can be selected 1-3 and get $7M, rather than drop to 8-10 and have to accept $6M.

That seems a bit too wily to me, and I would be worried that there’s a red flag or two in the reports that would have him sliding well down the board.

IMHO:

Trade: Jansen, Ward & Neefo (If offers received) and Tyler Anderson.

Roster moves: Send O’ Hoppe & Silent C down, bring up Aldegheri/Silseth* as a starter, Lugo up and playing LF/CF, bring up Wallach and a AAA IF for a cup of coffee, upon his return, send Moore down, pick up LeMahieu once he clears waivers, maybe run Bachman and/or Fulmer to start a couple of games, Detmers/Zeferjahn slide to closer. Bring Paris up in another month or so if he is progressing.

Release: Rendone a few weeks after the AS break, as I doubt he is progressing on his injury, Soler a few weeks after the AS break if he doesn’t catch fire.

*Not sure if Silseth is starting or relieving

I know this is counter to everything I’ve ever said or believed , but I would like the Angels to give a starting opportunity to Victor Mederos. His stuffplayed the other night ( I dont know if it’s his new arm angel release point) but he has the stamina to be a starter . With the only question being can he get major leaguers out multiple times through the order while still being able to control his walks.

Meanwhile, I’d like them to flip flop Koch and Detmers.

They’ve given Koch 30 starts now (19 this season alone) to prove himself. His expected ERA last season (4.97) is virtually identical to his xERA this season (4.95). His actual ERA was probably misleadingly low last year, and a bit too high this year. I think a 5 ERA pitcher is what a guy who needs to command a tiny slice (like 20%) of the K-zone to succeed is likely going to be.

The stakes aren’t high right now. Let’s see if Detmers can stretch back out and take his “one batter at a time” approach into the starter role. Meanwhile, let Koch amp it up for one inning, and let if fly with that power sinker in a bullpen role.

Not a betting man… typically only “special occasions”… but I put 20 on the Angels taking Arquette at +4200. So that’s my new favorite draft prospect at No. 2.

Also Brett Kerry has a 10 ERA at SLC after 15 starts and it occurred to me that might be the highest ever for a qualified starter in the PCL, so I tried to deep dive it but instead hooked this interesting Wiki page about one of the great all-time proto-Angels… a guy named Jigger Statz, who played 18 seasons for the team in the pre-Autry era and ultimately passed away in Corona del Mar, which seems like the best place for an old ex-Angels to spend his twilight years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jigger_Statz

I don’t know if he’ll flame out – he could have a long career. I look at Doyle through the same lens that was Moniak at #1 years ago. Moniak will likely have a long career, but he was never worth a #1 overall. I don’t believe Doyle is worthy of #2 overall.

Plus he’s more likely to be a relief pitcher in the majors as opposed to a starter and I believe he’s more likely to be injured.

We don’t. He could be a harder throwing Bryan Woo. Or, actually, watch tonight’s Dbacks starter Ryne Nelson. That’s the type of fastball they are looking at here. It’s a hell of a building block and if you get Doyle to throw ANYTHING else well he can be really good. If his arm doesn’t explode. I don’t even know if scouts care about that now since everyone’s arm explodes all the time now.

I’m just not into him, but he isn’t a sure bust at all. Far from it.

Turk's Teeth

Here here.

It’s just about how much risk you’re willing to absorb with a pick this high.

I hope no one thinks I’m predicting Doyle will fail. He could be an ace. I just think that’s a lower probability than a relief outcome, because he’s a high strung high effort guy who might push his own limits and he’s already struggled to lose weight and keep in shape. The close coaching and conditioning he receive at Tennessee is going to have to have to be kept up in Anaheim.

Several reputable scouts like Doyle, and several reputable scouts don’t like him. He’s a divisive prospect.

I think Kiley McDaniel’s capsule this week lays out the risks/rewards well:

If it doesn’t work out, what happened? His frame/delivery/approach doesn’t allow him to turn over a lineup, so he pitches 60 to 100 inning per year with some impact in a lesser role.

Doyle was a second-round follow after last season, then burst onto the scene this spring throwing harder and more strikes and showing crisper off-speed stuff. Scouts still hesitate given the effort of his delivery, his heavy fastball usage, the fact that his stuff can fade a bit late in games and his poor performances down the stretch.

That said, his fastball could probably get big league hitters out right now, and he can throw it in the right part of the zone. His cutter and splitter are both above average, so you could argue that the fastball usage and control (throwing it over the plate) over command (hitting spots) can both be fixed almost immediately.

The question then becomes whether his general power approach to pitching and delivery with some effort will hold him back from turning over a lineup and make him a reliever. Doyle might be in the big leagues in the first half of 2026 in shorter stints while he’s looking to answer that question. Some teams like the idea of an immediate return on their pick with a shot for a home run if he then can prove he’s a starter, similar to what former Vols lefty Garrett Crochet did.

I think some of us here that watched the regionals and college world series saw both the plusses and minuses of Doyle down the stretch. Killed it as a reliever – had closer energy – but faltered badly against Arkansas, the team Kade Anderson sliced through like warm butter the following weekend. Arnold also exited nobly – Florida State’s defeat was no fault of his own. So of the three college lefties, two performed, and one flamed out at the end.

tl;dr

The Angels have already turned their 2020 and 2021 first rounders (Detmers, Bachman) into leverage relievers. Fans sense a pattern here (as do scouts), and worry using a #2 pick on a reliever is poor value, when no doubt starters like Jamie Arnold (proven track record across multiple seasons) as still on the board.

You know who I like more than Willits? JoJo Parker.

I think the hit tool is comparable to Willits’, but there’s more power upside. I know the Angels have been heavy on Parker as well.

If the Angels depart from the college arm consensus, and don’t want to pay Boras for Holliday, Parker is an interesting option.

In that case, I’d give him the full 25% haircut, and give those pool savings to Jacob Parker, his twin brother, and bring in both as a package deal. (This isn’t actually whimsical – multiple teams are exploring drafting both.)

If the Angels go youth in the first round – just embrace it this draft. Pick up both Parker Brothers and add Taitn Gray in round two or three. Between those three, you have kids that can play all over the field, and they can come up the ladder as a class, challenging each other, like Trout, Grichuk et al did.

It would be great to get Belyeu at #47…..

I agree – it’s the pick at #2 that concerns me. We just can’t afford a mistake that high in the draft.

Oof, Belyeu’s chase and degrading contact quality scare me.

If the draft actually fell this way, there are 5-6 names that the Angels would be passing on for Belyeu that would be disappointing: Lodise, Gray, Voit, Neville among the bats. Quick and Obermueller among the arms.

Holliday/Anderson or Anderson/Holliday.

Let’s not spoil with Doyle.

Good morning to all, it’s Friday and locally we are in a heat wave, stay cool my friends. Also, heating up is what to do with our first pick in the coming draft. What is fun is that we all have different ideas, nobody is right if everybody is wrong type thing. Either Holliday or Hernandez works for me, but we all know it will be a college pitcher for sure. Did you know that prep players are more likely to make the majors than guys from college, it’s true. Anderson or Arnold work for me as Doyle to me will flame out quickly.

One good thing taking place over the season has been how many of you have come around to seeing the benefits of being sellers t achieve future success. No matter who goes they will hopefully be new blood to a lifeless franchise. So, who is on the don’t buy real estate here list? Jansen, Ward, Renny, Moncada, Tyler Anderson, Hendricks, Newman, so, the list is big. Adding Soler might be as big a stretch as adding Trout, it’s the money stupid. With what little will come in from trades added to the draft haul, we will start to see real measures in the rebuild that may payoff soon.

Sidebar: Hernandez has tipped the gun at 100 mph as a prep, impressive indeed. Next few weeks will bring a lot of posts to CtPG and make some great reading. Have a great and cool weekend.

Sorry to hear about the heat wave, I think a cold front went through in Phoenix because yesterday it was 114 F, but today it’s dropping down to 104F.

any of the Magnificent 7 work for me in 58 hours or so, so I’m much more interested in whomever the #47 pick is.

good column today and just overall outstanding coverage of the draft. Cannot believe it’s finally here.

i saw a fat scorpion 🦂 in the house last night. He must not liked the cold front or 115 F days (I’m not sure what brought him out.) Anyway I immediately stomped the shit out of it because Jesus gives us the authority to stomp on scorpions and snakes.

I took care of the scorpion. Now your mission this weekend is to stomp the shit out of the Snakes.

When presented with new information, in this case a larger sample size of results, viewpoints can change. I’ve changed mine.

— Pretty obvious we should sell at the deadline: Ward, Jansen, Anderson, Moncada, Rengifo.

— Draft a pitcher at #2. Anderson, Doyle, Arnold, Hernandez.

— Detmers and Bachman should be tried again as starters.

Bullpens can be built yearly on the fly. The focus should be addressing SP, 3B, OF in that order.

Bachman should be tried again as a starter. He isn’t good as a reliever. You missed Soler on your trade deadline guys.

As a guess, I think they will keep Ward, and maybe Anderson and Rengifo. Trade Moncada, Soler, and perhaps Jansen.

No team is trading for Soler. He’s a negative asset. Soler would need to go on a volcanic heater in 2nd half for us to even have a chance to flip him in the offseason.

I doubt we sell, but all the guys we’re mentioning here should be offloaded.

Bachman is currently sitting at a sub-1.1 WHIP with 3.33 K/BB. Just horrible. He got a late start to the year and didn’t get stretched out, so I doubt they try to start him this year, but maybe they try next season?

Trading Soler is like trying to shit out a nerf ball. You can push for it all you want but it’s just not gonna happen. A team has to WANT the player you want to trade.

so if we can adjust, I’m dropping my predicted win total by 7 wins now to 81 wins, (because we will be without half a season of Wash, seven wins are gone!)

don’t blow it Ray.

This team sorely misses Wash. Makes me sad

O/T: i wanted to say that Silent C performed poorly last night and a maybe it’s time to give someone else a try.

But, he was also BABIP’d to death! So many of the singles in the first inning could have (should have) been outs or double plays. That inning and hence his appearance could have turned out quite differently with just one of those hits going a slightly different direction.

It’s not like Arte and his minion are holding back a “Cy Young” caliber talent in the farm system. That’s why I’m ready to see Newman start a few games.

Command has been his undoing. You can’t give up a lot of hits, struggle generating whiffs, AND walk a bunch of hitters.

His career isn’t over, but his season as an Angel should be. He needs to work on his craft in AAA for the remainder of 2025.

Nice photo Jeff and great story. I really hope they aggressively sell but I don’t think it will happen.

THIS is what I want him to go to SLC and work on. He’s just not getting hold of the way he needs to command the strike zone. He just throws strikes…. which get hit. He’s not a lost cause at all, he just needs to make a last set of changes to how he pitches and he can be OK. He’s got A TON of data to work with at this point. Send him down for a month with goals. If he hits them in say four starts, bring him back up.
