LA Angels Monday News Crash: Lou Gehrig Day

Welcome to the fifth annual Lou Gehrig Day.

Robert Stephenson is now day to day with right biceps discomfort.

The Royals finally promoted Jac Caglianone. The Dodgers just placed Luis Garcia on the 15 day IL retroactive to May 29 with an adductor strain. Daulton Varsho is now on the 10 day IL with a left hamstring strain. The Yankees selected the contract of Carlos Carrasco. Nathan Eovaldi is on the 15 day injured list with right triceps fatigue.

Lou Gehrig Day. RIP to Mrs. Red Floyd, my Aunt Sandy, and all the other victims of the cruel disease that carries his name.

It was horrifying watching a witty, funny, outgoing woman gradually lose her ability to speak, then walk, then do much of anything. I pray you don’t have a loved one suffer from ALS.

Thank you for this. I add my father to your list. My father who taught me to love baseball. My father who would pitch batting practice to me when he could barely still stand. My father who I lost to this awful disease when I was only 22 and he was 55.

Today’s lineup, the OF play this series should be memorable. Can’t wait to see Soler in the right field corner. 😂

Oh, the “Italian Job” has been called up. Nice.

If Soler isn’t hitting, he’s basically an expensive paper weight. What an unfortunate trade by Perry.

All that being said, I’m 100% on board with parking Trout at DH for the foreseeable future. As in permanently.

Here’s an interesting take:
Years ago, there was an article that mentioned that if Tiger Woods saw $100, he should just walk on by, rather than bend down to pick it up. They calculated that Tiger makes more money per second, than the time it would take for him to bend over, pick up $100 bill, and put it in his pocket!?!

Or just call him up tomorrow.

And pitch him.

So….the team hit the cover off the ball and wins 8 in a row. Ward looks like Lou Gehrig during that streak.

Then reality hits, and the hitters donot, and its a loss of 7 of 8.

This is classic inconsistency and we have seen it for well over a decade. When the team hits or pitches at their best – they certainly can win and can do so streakily. But that is not what consistency looks like. Consistency means winning when the team is not necessarily playing at its best.

This team is built to win when they play their best. The problem is that over 162 games in MLB, a team is likely to play at that level probably around 35% of the time. A consistent team finds a way to win another 25% of its games when it is playing at average or slightly below average. That is what really separates consistent teams from inconsistent ones.

I was actually expecting this time be consistent. Consistently BAD. So the good streaks are fine with me. Especially if the bad streaks happen against the Yankees and Guardians primarily. If the “good” eventually happens a little more often by the end of the year I’ll take it. Hell, if the “good” happens for certain players by the end of the year but the team still sucks because it’s a shell of a roster I’ll even take that.

It’s like I am a predictive genius and I knew this team was not gonna be good this year.

The Dominican Summer League is underway this morning. Halos’ DR team is playing one of the D-backs’ squads. Our big 2025 signing, Gabriel Davalillo, is not in the lineup, but the No. 2 signing, shortstop Yilver DePaula ($900K), is leading off. Recapping the Halos’ 2025 international crop: Only two Top 100 signings (the two mentioned above) but a larger handful of Top 200 types in the $100K-$400K range: shortstops Jose Santana, Yojancel Cabrera and Cesar Paredes, pitcher Albert Morel, and outfielders Junior Ceriel and Yelinson Betances. It’s a syllable salad of potential and who knows if they’ll hit, but it’ll be fun following the team this summer.

But. How? We have no international presence. We don’t sign international players. Just guys from Kentucky and Tennessee and Oklahoma.

The Answer to Doyer pitching woes has been revealed . The blue juice injections and sticky stuff are messing up pitchers regular timing and mechanics, thus creating injury! Every pitcher that goes to Doyers improves (except Thor) but at a cost later. Tyler Anderson finally spilled the beans LOL

The Dodgers have no secret sauce for “fixing pitchers”. What they have is enough money to ignore red flags and sign outrageously overpaid pitchers without worrying about the inevitable injuries. It’s Only Moneyball!

This.

The Dodgers can afford the high risk/high reward guys like Glasnow and Snell. They realize the odds of them all being healthy at the same time are slim to none, but the strategy works as long as they have decent enough guys to fill in for them.

Those contracts would sink most teams, but the Dodgers can afford them so that is their strategy.

Next 4 weeks will tell. Snell is tossing 120 ft without pain and could be pitching in a couple weeks. Sasaki is starting a throwing plan, Glasnow is throwing bullpen sessions but I’m sure we won’t see him for a while. Ohtani could be pitching some time after All Star game.

Unless one or two of these guys are lost for the season with regards to pitching, I don’t think doyers will be calling anyone.

The question I have today is are we actually rebuilding or are we just this year’s version of a bad team. I think we need to have an aggressive trade deadline and trade it down to the studs rather than operate in the current in between land. The best teams are willing to say goodbye to anyone who isn’t part of the rebuild.

The team has missed the playoffs for the last 11 seasons. They don’t rebuild – they’ve said as much previously.

Arte will not exceed the luxury tax, which means there’s no help coming via free agency.

For laughs, let’s assume they do tear it down to the studs now. The team likely won’t be in a position to consistently compete for the playoffs until after Trout’s contract ends.

It’s more likely that ownership crosses “the rainbow bridge” before the team has the opportunity to win consistently.

As is known, the bird rots from the rostrum.

Yep. I’m gonna be disappointed if they don’t sell at the deadline…. if they have anything to sell. Ward may look good enough by then. Tyler Anderson maybe. Moncada maybe (though it’s so hard to find ANY 3B I will be a little understanding if they don’t move him). Jansen…. hopefully. Maybe Hendricks. Maybe Soler if he heats up. Maybe Travis Dee. Rengifo if he gets his head out his ass…..

The issue is that teams need to want our guys. As it stands now we are sellers competing with the goods that the White Sox, A’s, Rockies, Pirates, Orioles, Nationals, Marlins, Reds maybe Red Sox, Rangers, Rays, Braves, D-Backs, Royals and Twins.

We aren’t likely to get down to “the studs and untradeable contracts”. I understand that. But I’m gonna be unhappy if they do nothing and then say something stupid about being close. It’s one thing to feel required to declare you will compete in January or March. It’s another to act like you actually believe it.

BOLD AF move? Trade Kikuchi if he looks good. His contract’s not huge, and if he looks “play offs” good maybe we can get someone for him. Two more years at less than 22M a year may look OK someone like the Red Sox or Cubs if they decide to push some chips in, especially if his WHIP gets below 1.4 and we pay a little of his money down.

BannedInLA

It can be easily argued that Kikuchi, who is pitching very well in this era of 6 inning starts, is our most attractive trade asset with 2 additional years of contractual control. the

That’s a good point. I don’t see 2026 being a competitive year, so trading Kikuchi for prospects that will ripen in 27/28 is probably a good deal.

They are at least keeping the top prospects in the minors for development this year. That’s a start.

A good draft and trade deadline acquisitions will make this feel like a rebuild. If they hold on to Ward it won’t feel like a rebuild.

Well. Get out there. Make some calls. Feel free to tell me who’s trading us anything for Rengifo right now. Who’s taking Ward over Cedric Mullins. Who wants Anderson or Hendricks more than Andrew Heaney or Luis Severino or Jake Irvin or Nick Martinez etc.

Teams can get Jansen…. or Emelio Pagan, Dennis Santana or Jake Bird….

Contrary to CtPG Guy’s thinking, it’s not as simple as Perry just deciding to trade a guy and then it happens.

We know if until the trade deadline, but I’m guessing Arte hasn’t approved a rebuild and we’ll hear more from Perry about how there weren’t good trades available for player x, y, z.

What I’d really love is to see the Angels buy out some other bad contracts. E.g., get some prospects for the Red Sox in exchange for taking Trevor Story’s bad contract. With Rendon off in 2027 and Story off in 2028, maybe the Angels could actually try to get Trout a ring before Trout turns 40.

I’m not sure the skanks care about saving money, but Stanton would be another option. Or Kris Bryant from the Rockies, but his lasts until 2029.

Interesting comment.

The Angels have still only used 5 starting pitchers all season. Saying you have nowhere else to go is a reflection of your rotation depth.

Also, Reid Detmers over his last 9 IP: 1 ER, 13 Ks. He’s not stretched out, but still, an option.

I kept wondering why everyone was wearing #4 yesterday, and all I could come up with was Lou Gehrig.

Road to Omaha
Looking good for UCLA – they took care of their home regional unlike some southern schools like #1 VU and #2 Texas. Now all UCLA has to do to get to Omaha is beat UTSA at home (thy ousted Texas).

USC plays Oregon State today of a spot next week and our favorite university Rocky Top plays today too – it’s an elimination game so Liam will be throwing whatever gas he has at some point too today.

Now that Sun Devils 2025 are toast, I will be much more focused on prospect watch as the Road to Omaha continues.

It was nice to see Trout get a pinch-hit RBI single yesterday. He initially swung for the fence, but settled (rightly) for a cheap RBI single. Keep it simple and the hits, and HRs, would eventually come.

Other than that, the game sucked eggs yesterday. That Moncada brain fart was oooof.
