Angels Got Shut Out 3-0

Today Kyle Hendricks started against the Marlins. The Marlins failed to score in the first inning. Tim Anderson singled to lead off the Angels part of the game but both Schanuel and Moncada both struck out. Then Anderson was caught stealing to end the inning.

The Marlins also did not score in the second inning. Taylor Ward popped out and Jorge Soler struck out. Travis d’Arnaud bounced a ground rule double out to left center. Luis Rengifo was out after an adverse replay decision regarding his infield single.

In the third inning, the Marlins scored a run on doubles by Matt Mervis and Derek Hill. Javier Sanoja hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 Marlins. A fly out and a couple of strikeouts later, the Marlins are back at bat in the top of the fourth inning. Otto Lopez singled and stole second base. Connor Norby singled to make it 2-0 Marlins.

In the fifth inning, Javier Sanoja and Jesus Sanchez had back to back doubles. 3-0 Marlins. The Angels did nothing.

In the sixth inning the Angels held the Marlins scoreless for a change. In the sixth inning, Nolan Schanuel and Yoan Moncada both walked. After a pitching change, a passed ball put those guys at second and third. Taylor Wrad struck out to end the inning. Still 3-0 Angels.

We came to the ninth inning with the Angels still losing 3-0. Yoan Moncada lined out. Taylor Ward and Jorge Soler both struck out to end the game. The Angels lost this one 3-0.

Bad loss. This is what a momentum killer is. If the halos want to regain that momentum then they have to win the series against the Yanks

this Taylor thing is Perry’s admission that he hasn’t developed an adequate farm system. Coupled with the 0 for 20 pitchers draft it makes me big time worried what he’s gonna do with the #2 pick

Paris needed to be sent down to get more at bats. Ever since the PEDs wore off he’s been lost.

As for Taylor, just another head scratcher from Perry. Taylor is just another broken misfit that Perry is hoping reverts back to 2017 or 2018. The move does not improve the team today or in the future.

Maybe we get a break and he provides a decent option in the pen.

Robert Stephenson is in the Angels clubhouse. Sounds like he may be getting activated tomorrow.

Meh. He has sucked this year. Otherwise Doyers would not get rid of him. Just shows how little faith Perry has in either Paris or Adell.

I mean, this guy is SLG .257 with zero HR’ thus far ! I will still take Adell over that. Must say only 35 AB’s for Taylor. Paris about to be sent down ?

Scott Kingery has been playing the same role at AAA – CF and 2B. Interesting that they would sign an objectively underperforming castoff over trying the internal option.

It’s not like Taylor is a wizard with the glove in CF.

Seems like another spaghetti-on-the-wall move from Perry.

Do you think the team can play .550 ball the rest of the season? That’s what it would take to get near to winning the division.

Road to Omaha field revealed.
First thought on my end is that ASU falling completely flat the last four games did not cost them on bit, and I’m pretty happy they don’t have to go to the SEC.
Up against UCI, who probably weren’t hit either for losing the conference championship.

The committee loves that SEC and maybe deservedly so. Oregon got a bad deal after winning the big 18 regular season, then losing in the tournament. They get to host the first round but they’d been ranked #4 before that loss and now they’re seeded 12th

As Taylor Ward goes, so too go the red-hot Los Angeles Angels

By Sam Blum

What makes Taylor Ward the way that he is?

On May 10, his batting average dipped to .174. He’d just come out of a 0 for 27 slump, having struck out 19 times in the previous 13 games.

On May 24, he awoke as the hottest hitter on the planet, having homered nine times in the last 17 games. An extra-base hit in nine consecutive contests. Two game-winning grand slams, and his OPS has risen more than 200 points in two weeks.

“He’s guessing right. He’s a guess hitter,” said Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington, trying to explain the extreme peaks and valleys of Ward’s season. “If you haven’t figured that out, watch. He’s a guess hitter. And guess hitters go through where they’re guessing wrong all the time. Earlier in the year, he was guessing, and now he’s guessing right.”

During Ward’s slump, the Angels played like one of the worst teams in baseball. They had MLB’s lowest on-base percentage. In 21 dreadful games, the offense scored just 52 runs. In the 17 games since, the Angels have posted 102 runs. The team reached .500 (25-25) again on Friday, after dipping to as many as eight games below.

A complete 180 to their once floundering season, led in large part by Ward.
His stunning turnaround likely isn’t as simple as Washington suggests. Yes, he acknowledges, there are certain pitchers where he hunts specific pitches to hit them.
But, Ward credits a significant mechanical change, noticed by Angels offensive coordinator Tim Laker, for his massive improvement.

“Like a light switch, you make a single adjustment,” Ward said, “and it changes everything.”

The day Ward’s hitless streak snapped, the organization brought in a minor-league pitcher from Inland Empire to throw him live batting practice long before first pitch. During that session, Laker noticed that Ward’s back foot was sliding during his load up to swing.

That small mistake was costing him timing and power, resulting in pop-ups to right field or grounders to the shortstop. That timing and power have now been on full display over the last two weeks. It’s because the back foot now remains firmly planted.

“Bad mechanics versus good mechanics. I always go back to that,” Ward said. “Mechanics run the hitter’s life. You have anomalies who were born to hit a certain way. They roll out of bed, and they’ve always raked. Then there are guys who have manufactured their swings to have good mechanics.”

None of this is particularly new to Ward. Go back to his breakout season in 2022. Or, at least, what appeared to be his breakout season. On May 20 of that year, Ward was hitting .370, with nine homers, 23 RBI and a 1.194 OPS. He’d started the season on the injured list. But after 30 games, he looked like a genuine MVP candidate.

And with that hot hitting, the Angels looked like they’d finally turned the corner as a franchise. They were 27-17 and on track for their first playoff berth in eight years.
Over his next 14 games, Ward went 7 for 50 with two extra-base hits and just three walks. The Angels had lost 14 consecutive games. Their manager was fired and their season fell apart. Ward was not an All-Star and didn’t find his offensive groove again until late August.

As Ward goes, so do the Angels.

“I feel like it’s cool to be back (where I was) in 2022. It’s very satisfying to be in this position right now and doing what I’ve been doing,” Ward said. “I think my biggest goal moving forward, in the rest of my career, is limiting the tsunami of drastic numbers.
“I think if I can continue to do this and stick with a good routine, I can level that out more.”

Ward is hitting the ball harder this year than he has in his career. His average exit velocity is 91.9 mph, and his average launch angle, at 20.2 degrees, is the highest it’s ever been. He’s striking out more and walking less. His fly ball rate is 39.7 percent, up from 32.9 percent for his career.

Ward’s offensive profile is becoming more power-driven. When it’s going bad, that means a ton of strikeouts. When it’s going good, that means a ton of home runs.

The key for Ward is consistency. And it makes sense, since what Ward does is not that different from any other hitter. All offensive players go through highs and lows. Often multiple times throughout a six-month season.

But for Ward, they’re just more pronounced and elongated.

A lot of Angels have contributed to their newfound winning ways. The rotation has handed out regular quality starts. The bullpen has finally started holding leads. Zach Neto went 12 for 31. Logan O’Hoppe has five homers in his last 29 plate appearances.

That’s what makes all of this so inexplicable. It could be that someone is a guess hitter and is guessing right. Or that someone made a mechanical tweak. But with the Angels, they’ve collectively gone from all struggling to all raking.

And no one represents that better than Ward.

“I don’t understand it, even how simple I am,” Ward said. “I don’t understand how the lulls can be so big. It’s insane to me. … Just continuing to do the right thing. Sticking to those foundational things that I’ve been good at.

“We learn from what we did back then and continue to ride this. Baseball’s baseball. Whatever everybody’s been doing individually, needs to stick to that.”

Angels extras

• Angels general manager Perry Minasian has been pleased with the team’s recent play: “We’ve played well, had some big hits, made some big pitches, made some big plays on the field. It’s been fun to watch. We’re playing better. It comes down to execution, it’s a game of execution. And the more experience these guys get … the more chances they have to do some positive things.”

• Neither Minasian nor Washington could provide a timeline for Mike Trout’s (knee) return from the IL, though it doesn’t appear to be a long wait. Trout has been doing baseball activity, but he still needs to run the bases before being cleared.

• Reliever Ben Joyce did not have a locker in the Angels’ clubhouse on Friday, indicating that he will not be with the team as he completes his rehab from season-ending shoulder surgery earlier this month.

• Pitching prospect George Klassen has resumed throwing after taking a line drive to his head in early May. He was hospitalized.

• Angels top prospect Christian Moore was promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake, where he promptly hit his first home run with his new team. He’ll be strongly considered for a call-up soon if he continues to hit and perform well with the Bees.

I wouldn’t read too much into that home run though – in the same six game series where Moore hit one HR, Jac Caglianone hit five, and spare parts like Scott Kingery are hitting .405/.425/.622 on the season in that park.

Salt Lake really exaggerates offense, which is why many reasonably questioned why Moore was promoted from a neutral park context where he was struggling, to a pinball machine that bears little relation to what he’ll face in Anaheim.

Personally, I’m looking at his in-zone contact rate and subsequent K rate – that was stable WoW, with an elevated K rate near 28%. When Moore stops swinging through middling fastballs in the zone, and gets that K rate in the teens, I’ll feel more bullish on his ability to tread water in the MLB.

The pitching was sufficient today. Hendricks sporting an ERA below 5.50 represents the best ROI we could hope for IMO.

The bats were bound to cool off. I think they’ll rise to the occasion against the Yanks and their a$$hat bandwagon “fans”.

Trade Ward, Jansen, and whenever else. Reload for a playoff push in future years. This team has no business making a playoff push.

I get it. I would love to see the Angels in the playoffs too but I can’t get the taste of the Ohtani non-trade out of my mouth. My biggest fear is we do that again this year.

I am also team playoffs, but I want sustained success and multiple years of playoffs. I don’t want to mortgage the future to make the playoffs as the last wildcard and then not sniff the post season again for another ten years.

JackFrost

I don’t think that is going to happen. And what would “mortaging the future” be? Not trading Ward? Because I don’t think it is gonna happen. And besides, with what we would likely get in return it would not move the needle anyways… teams don’t usually give their top prospects or players for mid-season trades. The Luis Garcia trade was an anomaly. In most cases the team trading the established player for the “prospects” ends up losing the trade.

There is no way we would get equal value in any Ward trade. And that is one of but not the only reason I would be against it.

We got some pretty decent prospects back last year for rental relievers. Ward would be worth something respectable on the trade market, especially with another year of control remaining. I agree we wouldn’t get another teams top prospect but that doesn’t mean it’s automatically a bad trade.

I guess there could be an argument made for keeping him and seeing if we can add/develop more and make a playoff push next year and if it doesn’t work out, trade him at next year’s deadline.

Playoffs would be fantastic, but imho, not realistic. it will take about 86 wins, plus/minus a couple to get a WC entry. For a team which almost everyone here said was not a .500 team, the Angels would need to be about a .550 team the rest of the way to get to 86 wins. Or about 11 or 12 wins over .500. Based on current player stats and schedule I don’t think .500 is realistic let alone .550. Would love to see it, but I just don’t think it will happen.

That said, I’m on the fence about trading Ward. I guess we’ll see what happens to his new swing between now and trade deadline. The Mets have two pitchers on the 60 day IL though I don’t know expected return date. Maybe some package of Anderson, Detmers, Adell, Rengifo could pry loose their highest 3b prospect Jesus Baez, sixth rated 3b prospect in MiLB. At this point he has only been in A ball, I believe.
