LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Touki T

Touki Toussaint cleared waivers and was outrighted to Salt Lake City.

Dylan Cease and Hunter Greene are both on the injured list. So is Evan Phillips of the Dodgers. The Orioles acquired Luis F. Castillo from the Mariners for cash. The Orioles will also sign Cuban left-hander Naykel Cruz. The Mets signed Colin Poche to a minor league deal.

It is nice to be on the other side of the “Avoid the sweep” cheer.

The Athletic (Keith Law) also dropped their first mock draft of the season within 24 hrs of MLB Pipeline’s. Law had the Angels with the same pick as Callis did: Liam Doyle.

Everyone thinks the Angels will take a college player and attempt to move him quickly to the big leagues, as they did with Zach Neto and Nolan Schanuel and seemed set to do with Christian Moore before he had some contact issues in Double A. There’s been more smoke around them taking one of the two college lefties, as both appear likely to be able to throw in the big-league bullpen in the second half of this season, if the Angels wanted them to do so. All that said, they’ve been heavy on Hernandez recently too.

At least there’s a little hope there in that last sentence – Law suggests they’re in on Doyle, Arnold and Hernandez. That’s two of my top four.

If they did go Hernandez, it would be quite the departure for this draft room. They’ve tended to go prep on Day Two with overslot deals in the #11-12 range. But even more, despite SoCal being one of the nation’s hot spots for baseball talent (especially prep), the Angels have only made two draft selections from California in the past four drafts (and both from NorCal).

Pirates fire their manager, Texas fires their hitting coach, but both Washingtons still remain.

Suppose Perry trades Tyler Anderson for that comp pick several people on this site want, who replaces him in the rotation? The team may want to stretch Detmers out before handing him the spot while Aldegheri, Eder and Dana are already on the 40-man roster (as is Silseth, but I’d like him to find his control before they call him up again). So, who gets the call?

Detmers first, with Dana in reserve feels like the best approach.

I’d try Aldegheri, then Klassen, after that. It’d be preferable to let Klassen work things out for May and June in AA, I think.

the problem is, what team is really going to need Anderson for the rotation? The only one I could MAYBE see is the dodgers because of their injuries, and we know ARTE doesn’t like to deal with them usually. I can’t really see any of the other teams needing a rotation piece, but things could change.

I’d say Jansen would be more likely

I don’t know about that. Most teams don’t have 5 starters with ERAs below 3. Just about any team could use him, especially for a back of rotation boost.

Even if his ERA gets closer to 3.5 it’s probably still an upgrade for most team’s 4th or 5th starter.

The Yankees are hurting SP wise, one more goes down they may trade that held down OFer they have @ AAA.

For that matter, the same sitch with with the Blew Crue.

The Rockies might be worse than last years white sox. 6-29 for the moment, losing 9-0 right now in the 4th inning. On pace to win 27 games.

Let’s see how we play against them which I don’t think is until September.

I saw something bad in Adell’s ABs. On his left foot lift, he moves it back towards his body, so he is basically swinging against (Some of) his own body weight in motion.

Now all you have to do is get him to stop that shit…. and stop swinging at pitches outside the strike zone.

Derek Shelton became the first major league manager to be fired in 2025, as the Pittsburgh Pirates opted to go in a different direction Thursday.”

Oh yeah, that direction is going to sooooo change immediately-Let’s see, not spending money to retain talent, being an AAAA team, developing talent for other teams, brutally bad trades, yeah, that losing record is on the manager’s shoulders alright.

This was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the headline. Taking the fall for a craptastic owner. Takes talent to be worst than Arte. Or the bozo that owns the Rockies.

Let’s not forget “competing” by keeping Bubba Chandler in AAA to control his FA clock.

I’m hoping that that we see Detmers sent down to get stretched out to start. It may be a fools errand but, they should give it one more attempt.

This is a good idea. It’s not a fools errand because he sucks AND he looks despondent on the mound. They can give him a “chin up” speech. Tell him they’ll likely need him in the rotation after trades. Send him to the minors with a hard drive full of video and a bunch if goals. Tell him they are gonna lengthen him out and he needs to get some issues fixed while he does it. Tell him he’s still in the plan this year, just go get longer and get your shit strait. Hell, send him to Tempe to work for a week if he needs the lab, then to a team.

One of the top near term priorities for the organization should be to get him fixed and make him a starter.

Angels should get his name out there on the trade market. He is being misused and organizations with solid pitching development could easily fix him. It’s just not happening here. His stuff is better than most on this team.

Doubt he’s easily fixed. He might be a guy that equal blame is given for his lack of development. Obviously he’s an Angel, we don’t develop, but I sense he has some issues that have limited his potential, as you said “His stuff is better than most on this team”. His two out, 2 strike, 1st inning, 0-2 counts that end up as walks, and other meltdowns, are his MO and in his DNA. Can’t blame everything on our various managers, GM’s, pitching coaches for his lake of consistency. Big portions falls on his shoulders.

Just look at Canning, escaping from Anaheim was such a good thing for him. Simple pitch mix has made improvements. Philosophy changes. Will it last for Griff? I don’t know but if he was here, we would not be seeing that kind of output. Agree? We got a DH for a viable arm. Detmers had success in 22-23, in 24, he got away from what worked. Still paying the price. I really do want to see him get added to a good org.

Idk about a new philosophy, he needs a new location. How many coaches has he had just being on the angels? 4? All 4 can’t fix him?

another moniker for the home of the Derby is Lousyville, KY.

It’s is where Detmers and Adell come from.

Maybe we shouldn’t get any more players from Lousyville.

Sooo many of the Angels’ top draft selections come from that same region of TN/KY and southern OH. Bachman, Joyce, Moore, Murphy, Olejnik, Detmers, Adell. There and in TX/OK.

Gotta think the purging of regional scouts and cross-checkers during the pandemic left the Angels’ national coverage very gappy, with 2-3 scouts from the Appalachian and TX/OK regions having disproportionate voice in drafting.

Arte would be over paying Joey Votto to play 1B at league age 44.

Is it time to start moving some guys…Heef has been in country a long time. Other teams are active, see what we can get.

Wash confirmed that he pulled Rengifo because he lost track of the outs.

Rengifo, Ward, Adell, Detmers.

These are all Eppler’s guys. I’m a fan of 3/4 of them, but we are getting to the point where moving on is best for us (other than maybe Detmers).

Neto, O’Hoppe, Schanuel, Paris are our present and future. Further down the line Moore, Rada

If we can get what we want, which is either a comp pick or 50 grade prospect in a deal I’d trade any of our guys at any point to do it. I think a lot of teams had to see who they have, see if internal options fix problems, etc. But if I were a Platypus I would be trading dudes in April if teams wanted them.

One good thing about Neto, O’hop and I’ll be nice and throw Schanuel on that list….I don’t think any of them are effected or infected by “The Heef” and his lackadaisical play and effort.

Platt has yet to make that kind of move. Pre-deadline deals in an attempt to add more prospect depth. Unfortunately he thinks the team can compete.

I don’t think there were many teams willing to give us what we want in April whether Perry wanted to trade or not. We could offer Ward in April but I doubt anyone’s giving us anything at that point.

FungoAle

Agree, April is a bit early but one would hope the GM is working today to offload Anderson, Beefo, Ward and Detmers with the intention of expanding the prospect base vs, going for the 2025 pennant. At the deadline, dump Jansen, Soler and Moncada. Commit to it Perry. Prey on the contenders when a they suffer significant injury setbacks.

Hoping Paris is waking up a little. He has a hit in 4 of the last 5 games and is 5 for 16 with a 2B, a HR, 2 BBs, and 3 RBIs.

I noticed in the first Blue Jays game, he is managing to keep his head on the ball more. I saw it on a foul ball and an out…. but it was a good sign and he’s certainly looking like he’s getting hits again.

Come on THE KIDZ!

Paris becoming even a league average starter would be such a huge boost. Neto and O’Hop is a good start but add a third legitimate young player and by golly that’s 50% better.

If, at season’s end, Paris & Nolan look like solid roster spots I’ll be stoked.

The pitching…. sheesh…. gotta see if ANY of these kids want a job. Anyone still wondering why a team that is trying to rebuild keeps arms like Anderson, Hendricks and Koochie on the roster? Cause you’ll always need someone whose hair isn’t on fire on the staff.

Big win for Halos last night. So was Moncada hurt to start the season and is that why he looked so bad or did he suddenly get bitten by a spider and develop spidey powers while he was away? Looks like an entirely different guy.

He had a thumb sprain (or fracture) coming out of spring training and tried to play through it. Then just eventually went to the IL.

Understandable he was struggling to hit, he cannot grip the bat well.

He has been awesome, but Rengifo has looked just as good over 2-3 game stretches in his career so let’s not get too excited.
