LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Regression

A few weeks ago I typed out a glowing Weekend Links about an 8 win 4 loss Angels team that had won its first 4 series of the year. Had they kept that going, the team would have won 108 games and there would be much joy in the land.

Since that column the Angels have reeled of a 4 and 13 record, which would net a year end win total of 38.

We all knew the Angels weren’t a 108 win team. But I highly doubt the Angels belong on the list of MLB’s most prolific losers. No, the true level of this Angels squad is in that vast chasm between the projections of two small sample sizes and is becoming a little more evident.

67 wins, 95 losses. That is the pace the 12 and 17 Angels are on pace to accomplish this season. When the staff here looked into the CtPG crystal ball we predicted win totals ranging from 69 to 79 so the team is only slightly under performing our expectations.

Numbers in baseball tend to even themselves out. Notoriously streaky Taylor Ward’s year end numbers are a prime example of this. Over his last 16 games he’s been atrocious at the plate to the tune of a .150/.203/.350 slash line with 20 K’s in 60 at bats. I’d expect him to have another good streak again fairly soon.

Kyren Paris got off to a crazy hot start and has cratered. Since the team left Tampa Bay he’s gone .111/.167/.156 with 24 K’s in 45 at bats. The jury is still out on him offensively. However, in ways that deserve merit he’s doing quite well.

I’ve seen him sign for kids at Spring Training as well. Hopefully his bat lights up as much as that little girl’s smile and he becomes lots of kids’ favorite player.

As for the big bat the Angels used to have in their lineup, Mike Trout still isn’t hitting and now is hobbled by injury. After being listed as available last night, he was transferred to the IL.

The Angels say it’s nothing serious so you know it’s definitely serious.

One guy who hit all week last week was Zach Neto. I’m going with his game winning home run last Thursday as our Highlight of the Week although his entire game on Saturday was one big highlight. This was the last game our Angels won and I was there to see it. So, winner winner chicken dinner.

The team site took a look why Zach Neto hasn’t missed a beat at all.

Stealing from links from yesterday’s comment sections, the Sports Business Journal took a look at why all the redevelopment is happening at the Honda Center and not at the Big A.

Notorious ass hat Tommy Pham is a complete ass hat and it really shows when you compare it to how Mike Trout handled a far worse situation.

And in continuing the tradition of looking to the future, Walbert Urena had himself a ballgame this week. 6 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 BB and his stuff is both nasty and starting to consistently find the strike zone.

It is a little early to add Walbert to the Caden Dana/George Klassen list of getting MLB ready prospects, but he’s starting to make me dream.

From around baseball:

They’ve identified the man who fell at the Pirates game. Just prior to falling he had taken off his shirt and poured beer on himself. I really hope he’s OK and let’s add this incident to the near infinite amount of others in which alcohol preceded a really bad situation.

If you think our April sucked, the Rockies would kill for it. Look at some of the dubious stats that define their horrible start.

This piece covers three key stories across the league. I never thought Clase would lose his closer’s role and there are segments on both bahstun and the Angels.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. This is a boxing fan’s wildest dream weekend with a stacked card from Times Square tonight, a meh Canelo fight with a nice under card tomorrow, and Monster Inoue on ESPN Sunday night after the Dodgers vs. Braves games. If you haven’t seen Inoue, I highly recommend it.

My Angels team plays the Phillies and I’m so proud of these kids. They are playing so much better than they were at the beginning of the year. We set a new team high for runs on Wednesday and the kids are genuinely cheering for each other. We’ll be at the real Angels game next Wednesday as the team gave our league a ton of free tickets.

I wonder if the “bruised knee” indicates that a break was near of does it mean that it’s already slightly broken? Is this a hamate-esque break for the knee?

Trout just can’t catch a break…

Now Alden Gonzalez quotes Washington with this —

“Mike Trout had two meniscus tears in different parts of his left knee last year, requiring two surgeries. Tonight, Angels manager Ron Washington told reporters he now has a bone bruise on that knee, which can be caused by repetitive strain and arthritis, not just trauma.”

When I said Trout was done for the year, maybe I was being too optimistic.

For the farm watchers among you, Saturday is the first day of Complex League action in Arizona.

All of the prospect media have called out Joswa Lugo as a player to watch, and he’s the highlight, but there are also some intriguing guys like Felix Morrobel and Manny’s son Lucas Ramirez to catch as well.

Also a chance to see what we have with recent prep pitching acquisitions, Trey Gregory-Alford and Dylan Jordan, plus DSL standouts Ubaldo Soto and Dioris De La Rosa. Davidxon Lara was also a kickass closer for the DSL squad last year.

If there are pop-up prospects to be found this summer in the Angels system, they’ll probably come from this crew.

The “build around Trout” principle definitely has to end.

No doubt Hall of Famer – maybe even first-round unanimous one – but his career as a principal player looks over, and this team is going to suffer as long as it continues to think of him as a centerpiece as opposed to a fourth outfielder and occasional bench weapon for sporadic HRs. A true rebuild is needed more than ever.

He hurt himself running to first base. The whole idea that the outfield needed to be reconfigured and both Trout and Adell should learn new positions on the fly to protect Trout’s health was already dubious and speculative, but this week has simply confirmed how much so.

And now the team wants to put Soler in RF and Adell in CF for the worst possible OF defense imaginable – just so they can continue to “protect” a legacy player on the IL…oof. The stupid burns.

To be fair, I never thought Trout would deteriorate this quickly. I knew the back end of his contract was going to really hurt, but why not expect 5-6 years of strong performance from him?

I mean, of all the bad long contracts the Angels have signed, how do you not sign Trout for life? He’s the best player the team has ever had, with 85 WAR, three MVPs and nine silver slugger awards.

But he fell apart almost immediately. Curses, and more curses.

I don’t think the team is building around him at all nor have they thought that way for a few seasons. There’s attempting to build in-spite of him due to his battleship sized anchor of a contract.

As for the OF switch – Yes and no. Moving an aging CF to a corner spot is SOP anyway.

Man, he’s really going out with a whimper. Sad.

He’s never had a strong arm, so the move to RF makes little sense. Older players get moved to LF or DH if they’ve lost range or foot speed. This was ostensibly to preserve his health, but he’s banging around in a corner, taking unfamiliar routes on shit knees. Meanwhile Adell was shortlisted for a gold glove in RF last season and had some solid metrics to support that.

What does “retire” look like when he is owed $200m? Does he work out a new deal – is that even allowed under the CBA? Does he just collect $37m per year for not playing? Curious as to what the group-think is here. Could he realistically’retire’ and not forfeit what he is owed?

That has happened with RenDone , although it is ad hoc and it just goes from year to year. There has been no write down. Rendon collects every penny.

Just like Rendon “retiring”, Trout is not going to retire – if “retire” means leaving over $200m in Arte’s pocket.

I’m sure Trout is a great human being, a wonderful father, and a super humanitarian, but he’s not going to retire.

No one forced Arte to give him the contract. The risk always existed that he could get injured and under-perform. Both parties knew it. Trout will get every last penny he’s owed whether or not he plays another game.

He may be the best defender in the Southern League. He makes tough plays look easy, and could be a plus MLB centerfielder today.

But he looks much like last year’s player at the plate. He’s walking a touch more, but also making less contact. Hard to be a small statured 19 year old in a league with some of the best pitching in the minors. The strength is just not there yet to handle AA velocity.

It’s the most important affiliate in the Angels system. To date this season, it’s been the most underperforming. I’ve watched 80% of the games, and what used to be strengths are now weaknesses. The Pandas used to have a lockdown bullpen, and it’s been frustrating to watch the team surrender lead after lead with a league-worst arson squad.

All of the starters have been inconsistent and look like WIPs, and the most performant, Hurtado, is the one whose stuff I’m most skeptical will play longterm in the MLB.

They’ve shifted Natera Jr to a relief, though honestly, I’d love to see him stretched out – he looked impressive across three starts in Arizona last fall. Urena seems more sustainable in relief – feels like those two should swap roles for a couple months.

Mitch Farris is also worth following as a potential taxi future squad guy – swing/sixth starter type. Finesse lefty whose stuff plays well at the college/minors level, but is likely to be a bit more volatile in the MLB.

Hurtado has mid-90s velocity, but very little movement on his fastball. He basically has to be Picasso or he’s going to get clobbered by more advanced hitters. He’s also a late bloomer – he’s projected (if he arrives) to debut at age 25.

Baseball America actually profiled him this week, and their assessment was similar to mine:

He primarily used his two-seam fastball last year but has moved to using the four-seamer as his primary pitch early in 2025. Neither has very good movement traits, as Hurtardo’s four-seam fastball has little ride or armside movement. That means hitting his spots consistently is imperative.

Hurtado’s best pitch is his changeup, which he is using at a higher rate this season and is the only pitch in his arsenal with even average whiff numbers. Hurtardo’s slider is a gyro at 86-88 mph that generates almost no whiffs but is an effective groundball driver.

Overall, Hurtardo appears to be pitching depth for the organization. Unless he finds more velocity or a better fastball shape, he’s unlikely to see a great deal of success in the future.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Yah. Joel’s got to mess with finger pressure or release angle or something to make his FBs move. He’s getting it out at max mechanical movement so it gets velo but if he sacrificed a couple ticks to get some lift he would probably do better long term.

Turk's Teeth
Editor

Or he could just lay it out and be a one-inning reliever.

I give him about a 10% chance of sticking in an MLB rotation, and that due to the improvement in his changeup.

But if he maxed out his velo in the bullpen, the FB-SL mix, with an occasional change, could make him an effective 7th inning guy, and raise the MLB probability to something more like 30-40%.

Of the bullpen-conversion guys, Urena, Hurtado and Gordon are the ones I’m most skeptical about. It makes plenty of sense to see if Klassen and Cortez take to a starter role, and as I’ve said elsewhere, I’d love to see if Natera Jr could survive at length as well.

Why in the world would it be a good idea for this team, in desperate need of a rebuild, to DFA a cheap, cost-controlled pitcher? The focus needs to be on trading any player that is actually good and filling their spots with warm bodies that can be cut later when the team has an actual prospect to replace them.

There are two choices: send Detmers down to the minors in hopes he can improve or use him as a warm body to pitch in long relief in games they are already losing.

Honestly, I think the hyperrational move is to option Kochanowicz, who is also struggling, and has a shorter track record, and give Detmers his turns in the rotation until the ASB.

Don’t know that the team is capable of making moves like that since they are, cough cough, “contending”, but that’s what I would do.

We’re only 18 months removed from a two-year stretch where Reid delivered 53 starts and a 4.15 ERA (sub-4 FIP over the same stretch), in his age 22 and 23 seasons! And costs $1.8M this year.

That’s a tough player to simply throw away due to a bad stretch where the organization is swinging him between the pinball machine of the PCL, the rotation and the bullpen.

Still believe Detmers is a victim of the bizarro-world Angels pitching philosophy of lets-make-starters-relievers and lets-make-relievers-starters that we’re seeing up and down the system. It’s had one modest success in Soriano, but is not necessarily replicable with the rest of the pitching corps.

Detmers has been a starter since he was a freshman at Louisville, which requires a carefully maintained ritual and conditioning. Bringing him in indiscriminately as a short leverage reliever, long-man, mop-up guy – what have you – is clearly something isn’t taking to.

I as well and other GMs around the league. Last July, when his popped up on the annual Angel deadline deal day, many teams were interested.

Reid Detmers Generating Trade Interest – MLB Trade Rumors

Would love to see what Reid would do with the right coaching. Last year he got away from his slider (by far his best pitch) compared to 2023. Also changed his release angle from 39 to 45 degrees. Question is, why change what worked. There was also that weird demotion Perry made last year on a team that was pitching starved.

He’s healthy and but the Halos and their bizarro philosophies are making it a no-win situation.

Definitely. This team is so far from contention, what’s the worst that can happen? If he rebounds, they either build up his trade value, or have a cheap and usable rotation arm.

If he fails, they basically have what they have now: a last place team with a volatile rotation and bullpen.

I think Detmers is likely to have a Griffin-like Lazarus renaissance if he moves to another team (probably the Braves!) and is given rotation-rope.

Why oh why do I keep drafting Trout in fantasy baseball assuming “he’s gotta put up a healthy season one of these years”? I can handle a crappy team and healthy Trout, or a good team and injured Trout, but both negatives really just make me check out on the team.
