Battle of the red again.
Angels vs. Reds Gamethread
Arte? Not evil enough?
Tampa Bay Rays owner Stu Sternberg is being pressured to sell his team by several people in the league, including MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, according to The Athletic’s Evan Drellich.
No because as long as he continues to piss away big money on idiot contracts for washed up guys like Pujols Hamilton & Rendone while still paying revenue sharing dollars to the downtrodden in the league ,the other owners would canonize him before they would kick him out.
NOLAN! Starting to look a little better in the box. Couple more weeks to work on swinging like a big boy! He can do it! I’m looking for .290/.350/.430 outa you SchamWow. 20 HR and you get thrifty’s ice cream after the season’s last game.
My son has a baseball tournament in Irvine in July. Need to take him to a Thrifty. I’m so old I remember when it was 10 cents for a double. I know Rite Aid took them over, but I heard some stores still sell Thrifty scoops. I’m guessing it’s no longer 10 cents.
My wife is obsessed with Thrifty. She’s got a carton of Rocky Road tucked away in our freezer right now actually.
“I just like him. He knows who he is and what he has”
— Wash postgame on Silent C after 4 innings, 0 hits, 0 walks, 2 strikeouts, 44 pitches.
Sorry Reid, you lost the #5 battle.
I hope he gets the shot. I like his stuff and the makeup seems solid as well (to Wash’s point). That said, I have not given up on Reid either. He has proven that he can pitch effectively at this level…just needs to get back to what made him good. If someone goes down with an injury or just implodes early on (such as Tyler Anderson) I could see him stepping in as a starter and doing well.
In short, at some point we could very well see both Silent C and Reid in the starting rotation.
Exactly. It’s not like they have to set Reid on fire. We KNOW we will need another starting pitcher this year. Tell Reid to get to work cause he’s next man up. He can still be good. Silent C himself was a “total bust” till the end of last year. Good stuff can happen. Reid can still be solid.
The question is Kyle Hendricks better than Detmers? Hendricks has had a good spring but are we letting a 35 year block someone who can contribute in the future when we can win? I am okay with Reid getting more work in AAA but at this point, this season is pretty make or break for him as an Angel.
I think they aren’t worried about The Experience himself blocking Detmers. SOMEONE on this staff will be injured or really suck soon enough. Reid can go to the killing grounds of SLC and work on stuff, then we’ll all wonder why he is being called up with a 5.80 ERA in May. Then we’ll remember a 5.80 in SLC is a 3.02 in real life.
Reid has not done anything to lose the battle yet, I can see a scenario where Detmers and Koch both make the rotation. If any slips, Suarez on deck and Anderson in the hole. Silseth seems better fit to come in for 1-inning.
We still have a few weeks. One of these guys is going to run into some or arm soreness, or another injury. Who knows, one of these guys might go full Gillooly to get a roster spot.

If Koch hasn’t earned a rotation spot at this point, spring performances simply don’t matter. The outcomes are there, and he meets the eye test.
Ashcraft is a frequent trade piece in the BTV trade simulator for Reds exchange scenarios. High ceiling arm, but oft-injured, so his value is modest.
Moncada has been pretty smooth with the glove the past couple of weeks. With hits in his past two games, hopefully he can build on it.
His defensive metrics are not bad and if he’s healthy he can still hit. But we better be ready to embrace the strikeout
a note – Terry and Bobby V yes have been here all spring, back up Lodge.
and it isn’t because, ‘hey good to see Arte spending.’
no, it’s because it’s the cheapest way to do a broadcast. All other TV talent is not working this spring. For instance I’ve seen Gubi , Patrick, Erica, and Mota too back in the day.
the radio guy and a studio host all spring. – cheapest way!
im not complaining though- we broadcast every game and probably the only ones to do that. 😉
Well, let’s be accurate here. All joking aside.
He is not Evil. Greedy, yes. Evil, no.
But he is DEFINITELY cheap !!!
Maybe we should start calling him “Greedy and Cheap” Arte.
I mean, laying off almost all your scouts during a worldwide pandemic (the only owner to do so) is morally dubious, and the starvation wages he imposed on his minor leaguers were the worst in the sport until it was exposed in the media.
I think there’s a place where cheap and evil converge, but ymmv.
I understand your argument, and to a certain extent agree. But I don’t think Evil with a capital E is the correct word. Plus, it feels like most folks here use that nickname in jest, which unfortunately undermines the reality of his cheapness.
Sorry Frostie I thought my long running C & E Arte sarcasm was more obvious. I too think Arte is cheap but I have no reason to believe he is evil unlike those Boston Red Sox fans.
Yes but he wasn’t the only baseball owner that did this many other teams also laid off their scouts during the COVID.
Same with the “starvation wages”. In general this was SOP with many organizations not just Evil Arte’s. So stating that the Angels minor league accommodations were “the worst in the sport” I think is more hyperbole than anything. IIRC correctly there were other indictments and “exposes” written about other organizations such as the Oakland A’s where allegedly prospects were given 2 slices of bread and a slice of cheese and called it a meal.
What actually exposed untenable living conditions among minor leaguers were restrictions associated with the Pandemic when teams couldn’t assist prospects in finding host families for their living arrangements. Subsequent nationwide discussions regarding theoretical Wage violations among teams against their minor leaguers ultimately led to welcome reform in the system but again this had been common practice across baseball.
Setting the morality argument of this issue aside, I think its just stupid for any organization to go cheap on player development costs if you have any hope of building a winner whether it be coaching scouting or housing accommodations or nutrition for players. Obviously we have seen the results of this illogical practice although it’s clear that the Angels have increased their commitment as of late but could always do more.
BUT BUT BUUUTTT! One sorry ass player who got cut from our farm was in an article. This is all the proof you need! Also, it is indeed possible to find orgs that are better at this than ours. Thus we are the worst.
Of course, one could ask some current and former farm hands.
I have. First, you’re right. The Pandemic killing host family systems was what was happening when Arte was exposed as Pol Pot.
Also fun to ignore. A lot of that stuff is actually handled by the MiLB team itself. Not the MLB club. At least that’s what guys I know played in the MiLB told me.
Other fun facts. Most players will buddy up and rent a place with money they have stashed away from off season work and signing bonuses. Few players rely on their paycheck, and if they are it’s because they WANT to play MiLB baseball very badly even if they didn’t get any money ahead of time.
Food is also partly the MLB team and partly the locals. From what I hear it’s a bunch of protein powder and electrolytes in most cases. There is a “snack” in most cases. But teams don’t tend to “feed their guys”. That’s the player’s job.
From what I have been told by players who have and have not been in the Angels system things very from stop to stop within a system and we are just meh. The only names I recall being called bad regularly were the A’s and the Pirates. But it sounded more like certain cities were bad…. like it sounded like Jupiter, Inland Empire and Augusta were not popular, even among guys who hadn’t played there, while I remember at least a couple guys saying Omaha is supposed to be nice.
I’m not sure there actually ARE any teams that house and feed their entire MiLB farm at every stop. I haven’t heard of any, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t out there…. probably the fkn Doyers….
The things players seem to REALLY care about are physio staff, weight rooms, and tools that help them hit/pitch better.
That’s been my limited experience when I asked guys I’ve met or coaches who have worked in farm systems.
But aside from all of that Arte is the worst ever.
You might think it’s hyperbole, but it’s been something that’s been reinforced to me for 20+ years of farm watching, interviews with tens of players, scouts and analysts. Especially in ’20-21 when MiLB was campaigning to unionize. The Angels were one of the case points of how bad the system had gotten:
https://x.com/Milb_players/status/1418331051806666754?t=YN9SVo_iMHqEMon7VB0hUw&s=19
While several teams furloughed some scouts in 2020, the Angels are the only team I’m aware of that furloughed all of their area scouts, all of their cross checkers, and almost half for their international scouts. They’ve still not replaced the cross checker network since then, and have fewer area scouts since pre-2020, afaik.
If only the players he was paying so little to had, you know, signing bonuses and stuff….
Hi California- now you have to wait till 1pm for the rest of the spring training games, like I have had to do so far.
Haha.
suck it up. First pitch will be here soon enough.
😁
