LA Angels Monday News Crash: Rose Garden

Rob Manfred is considering a petition by Fawn Rose to remove Pete Rose from the ineligible list. Donald Trump said he would give him a “complete pardon” for what that is worth.

Christian Moore is having a good enough spring to get a mention in this article about one prospect from every team making noise.

Billy Eppler is back in baseball. He got a gig with the Brewers as a special advisor.

Cardinals left-hander Zach Thompson has suffered a lat strain that shuts him down for three or four weeks. Jeff Criswell is having Tommy John surgery. The Mariners claimed right-hander Seth Martinez off waivers from the Marlins. Giancarlo Stanton will start the season on the injured list due to his elbows.

Portland stadium almost closer to reality.

Which is not really. They’ve now got a drawing of what it might look like.

Came here expressly to seek you out and get your take on the new renderings.

Still skeptical of momentum though? The mayor and the business alliance seem to be pretty full-throated in their support. I love that location.

I’ll believe it when I see there’s money to make it happen. Anyway, if you look at the top rendering you’ll see people walking. That’s a pedestrian/bicycle only bridge so I could park on one side of the Willamette and just walk across to the park. It’s easier to see lower down in the article. There’s no question if a team comes here I’ll be in attendance a lot. It’s not very far from where I live.

From what I see, this is as promising as it’s ever been. If the government and people provide a stadium, Manfred and MLB would love to meet you.

Gotta love the owners and MLBPA. Heading into a season, let’s announce that we don’t really see the point in talking to each other about major issues facing the sport that require a bunch of wrangling and haggling. Nope. We’re just gonna let the whole season go by, kick off a lock out, and then start arguing. It’ll be great.

I just bought my first MLB ticket since THE LAST stupid fking lock out right after Covid. Here’s to another few years of not giving the MLB my money after this next gem.

We need a fan strike. Like some weekend in May, early so both sides can see it, feel it, and think on it, where everyone who gives a crap just doesn’t watch games, live or on TV. Maybe do that a couple times over the season. If it were organized online and got publicity maybe it would scare these clowns into strapping on their big boy pants and trying to not piss us all off.

Let me guess. You’ve been working on this zinger for days. Holy shit were you ready. Maverick’s got missle lock and Goose is whispering “fire” in his hot little ears. This was the first comment of mine you saw. So you just tried to jam this on here like a chimp with a brain injury…. make banana fit into shot glass! Sure, defend CtPG Guy, this is America and you have the unsoothable right to be but hurt, but shit man, do it after one of my six million comments about CtPG Guy…. or at least one of my 12 million repetitive comments about stale topics.

Manfred just came out with his gem about a lock out a few minutes before I commented on it.

Sigh. Subjective context is hard for some folks isn’t it CoCo?

Two groups, MLPA and MLB owners can’t get together, and there will be some sort of lockout/strike, so your solution is to get a third group of people that are less organized to go on strike? If your plan is going to work, the obvious first step is to talk CtPG guy into agreeing with you.

I keep saying… When Rose played, baseball had only one inviolable rule, and it was figuratively carved in stone above every clubhouse door:

THOU SHALT NOT BET UPON BASEBALL, LEST THEE BE BANNED FOR ALL ETERNITY

Rose knew the rule. He knew the consequences. He broke it anyway. Screw him.

I didn’t see this posted last week, sorry if 2x posting.

“Schanuel said he did drills in which he alternated swinging with a heavier than usual bat and a lighter than usual bat. The overweight bat builds strength, and then the underweight bat develops speed”

If he can get his slugging into the low to mid 400s paired with his elite eye, they may have a borderline all-star on their hands.

I think Nolan’s slugging could improve if he improves his barrel rate. Nolan’s rate is about 3% and MLB average per Baseball Savant is 7.4%. I’d be happy if he got to 5.5% or even 6%. A better launch angle than 10 degrees might help, too.

Minor league camp starts today in Scottsdale. Why I know?
After a disappointing FOY Stakes,
i flew back from Miami last night and about 10 young DR kids were on the flight. One of them had on a nice red Angels Nike sweatshirt on, so I thought they were our guys. Another one of them sat next to me, it was Alexander Ramirez. I think my first question to him was if he knew Juan Flores. Of course, I proceeded to show him a bunch of photos of camp 2025 and all his boys there. I stopped after 100 pictures from day 1 😂 Halfway through the flight I thought that I did have pics of him too and pulled up the pictures from the AZL game from August 2021. Yep 😝 With limited Spanish and English between us, there wasn’t a bunch of conversation but he did say the plan was for him to go to ARK. I also asked if he’d seen Albert in the DR. Nope, just once in Angel camp last year.

Really nice kid. He’s a big RF bat. He’s been in the organization awhile (2019?) and keeps moving up. The good Lord knows we need a homegrown RF that can mash.

Laying a hefty sum of Ippei Bucks that they finish in the bottom 1/3 in offense in 2025. To much of the lineup is either, young and still trying to figure things out, often injured, or struggled offensively for the past several years.
Ward, Rengifo, Trout isn’t nearly enough…. We’ll need some extra Love/JuJu from the Baseball Gods to be league average.

If the “young but not kids” players ALL take steps forward our offense will be middle of the pack. If Ward/Rengifo finally get traded we will be worse. If Trout is 900 OPS we’ll be a little better. If some new kid like Kavadas or Moore blows up. A little better. Newman will likely keep the deep dark hole that is a Lopez from happening and Travis will make catcher stronger.

So, all in all, with some fails and some huzzas, I am hoping for a solid meh instead of last year’s milk steak.

As a kid, my heroes were my dad, Pete Rose, Superman, and the Six Million Dollar Man. Only one of them ever let me down—and he did it in a way that cut deep, right at the heart of one of my greatest childhood loves: baseball.

The rules exist for a reason, and the consequences are severe because this game means too much to let anyone compromise its integrity. That’s why Rose should never be pardoned. He gambled on the game, and if that kind of breach is forgiven, the game loses its meaning.

A humorous sidenote:

Reportedly during the off-season and right up to the Bregman’s signing, the BoSox told Devers that they were not going to sign either Bregman or that other big name 3B (I forgot his name). So, I imagine Devers has trust issues now with his employer.

The current fragility of many athlete’s egos (Male and female) is just so disappointing.

Arenado? There were lots of rumors the Sux were going to trade for him.

Ultimately Devers was told by the previous front office they would keep him at third. That front office is gone because the team didn’t win enough, partly due to Devers horrible defense at third.

When those of us in the real world see a management change we know things are going to change for the rank and file. Devers has a fully guaranteed contract, unlike us. He definitely comes across as a baby here.

Interesting stat line from non roster invitee Shaun Anderson yesterday… 6 Ks in two innings. Anyone know anything about him? Appears to be another career casualty of the pandemic shutdown… good minor league career numbers but never regained developmental momentum after 2020. https://www.mlb.com/player/shaun-anderson-641312?stats=career-r-pitching-minors&year=2025

Shaun of the not quite dead has had horrible platoon splits even in the minors ( Lefties have destroyed him) . His MLB 1.4 HR/9 are not as bad as I initially thought but still concerning . What’s interesting he was never a huge strike out guy in the minors (8.1 K/9) or majors (6.9 K/9) Maybe he added a new pitch to his arsenal that also effective against lefties? That was pretty impressive yesterday save for the solo dinger.

Also, the evidence of how Rose managed games in which he didn’t bet tells you all you need to know.

LOL, apparently so. The hubris involved in that situation is appalling. MLB can take unilateral action according to their rules and guidelines regardless of convictions (Rose was convicted, though on gambling) or the courts. Of course, if Rose was an entertainer, he would’ve been deified by now (Capote for example).

God knows, there are plenty of MLB players that should be convicted of fraud (Rendone, J. Hamilton, etc.).

I agree with how he managed as he burned up his BP like every game was Game 7 of the WS.

There’s always been talk of MLB putting Rose in after he died. If anything the orange one is jumping on a talking point he knows resonates with his white boomer base.

Pardoning him for actual criminal convictions does not mean MLB has to do anything.

And now let’s not let the political slant get in the way of the baseball talk about Rose. His tax evasion convictions are not what is keeping him out of the Hall.

Nah. Trumps just weighing in cause he has to weigh in on every damn thing. There’s a ton of pressure to get the hit king into the Hall. On the one hand, it’s weird that he’s not in there. On the other, he was a true asshole. Just like Ty Cobb, Enos Slaughter and Babe Ruth. Just like steroids, Pete’s just the guy that got caught. So I kinda don’t care. If he gets banned forever then old man grumble puss can be happy. If he gets in then Rose fans are happy. Baseball itself, as well as the writers, have always been assholes. I feel he should’ve been elected into the HoF, but banned from official MLB stuff. What he did was appalling and I can 100% assure you that gambling was a much bigger thing back in those days and there was absolutely no wiggle room concerning gambling or betting on baseball. Until, I believe the early or mid 90’s, no MiLB or MLB players were allowed to even walk into a licensed Casino. That’s why Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle were blackballed by MLB for years, as they advertised for a few Casinos, until the rule change.

I can tell you this, if you are young and living on a relatively tight budget and realize you cannot go to a local Casino that has a $1 or $2 all-you-can-eat buffet-That’s pressure! 🙄

Relative to his HOF candidacy , I would rely on the veterans committee of his peers. They would know him better than anyone if he was a scumbag I doubt they would want him to join them in Cooperstown.

It seems like the his contemporaries including Nolan Ryan (he was featured extensively in Facing Nolan) seemed to like and respect him. I know many already inducted weren’t choir boys but if he was truly that respected as a player the Veterans should have the decision to let him in.

Now if they would just stop screwing around and finally let Bobby Grich in…

Curious what HOFers Barry Larkin, Tony Perez & Dave Parker have to say. They all played under Manager Rose some in the case of Larkin played with Rose for multiple seasons even when Pete was a player coach. They would have witnessed some questionable managerial decisions based upon Rose’s betting patterns.

I wish I could find the Cincy Enquirer piece I’ve linked so many times. The writer looked at Rose’s bookie’s ledgers and compared the games Rose bet vs. those he didn’t.

The good pitchers didn’t throw in the games Rose didn’t bet and they got to stay in long enough to endure some damage. When Rose bet, neither was the case.

It was true he only bet on his team to win, but there were a lot of games he didn’t bet that he didn’t seem nearly as interested in winning.

I think his on-field accomplishments were and have always been respected. He was truly breathtaking to watch play a game.

His “hey, my shit don’t stink! and those rules? Ha! Those don’t apply to ME” attitude is what kept him out. If he had been leading, and offered an insincere and phony “apology for what I have done” he might have found a way into the HOF.

Pete DOUBLED DOWN denying he ever bet on baseball, and continued to whine about the HOF like a little girl who din’t get a pony. Then when he finally came clean (for a fee) he continued to whine about it.

Now, he is completely dead. A breathtaking, great player who broke the rules. THE rule.

Period.
