Late to the party.
This is a move I didn’t expect but am happy to see. Definitely a guy I wanted us to go after. Adds to the tradeable assets along with Ward, Rengifo, Anderson, Soler, and Kikuchi (yes, Kikuchi).
Of course, he’s no sure thing, but this is the type of player (bounce back candidate) we need to be adding.
When a player delivers below average stats for 8 years, and then produces MVP level stats the season before signing a major contract extension, it raises a lot of questions……
So this dude hasn’t produced 1 WAR in a season for the last 3 seasons. He played in 11 games last year and has been a bit injury prone. His two good seasons were very good – 2019 and 2021 when he was 24 and 26. So, I doubt this is a game changer to any extent. That said, at 1 year and $5m its a low risk/value play and if they jettison Rendone as a result, it will be the greatest signing in Angels history (exaggeration but its how I feel).
We got a full 40 Man boat so who’s walking the Plank to add Yoan to the roster?

Kingery seems like a pretty easy cut or obviously the Rendon cut would hit like crack.
Kingery has options left and agreed to a Major League contract . hes not going anywhere except to the Great Salt Lake. Maybe Ryan Noda? or are there any pitchers that light your fancy on that list?
I say Kingery because he’s clearly not an MLB player at this point so it makes no difference to me that he’s optionable.
Bullpen depth is so weak that I wouldn’t drop anyone until more additions are made. We’ll be able to send Stephenson to the 60 day IL once spring training is underway so we will be able to add another to the roster again soon.
But in order to do that they can’t announce the signing until next Wednesday. Thats one hell of a long physical thats for sure.
I still have to believe that the Angels will sign a veteran closer type in the next few days so either way they will need to make room on the 40 man( unless said reliever is willing to take a minor league deal until opening day). But of course I would be concerned about the quality of the reliever we would get if this was all Perry was offering.
Hey cool. I’ll take it. If he gets his bat together he’s gonna be great for us. Man, we have a lot of IF guys who can move around now…. wonder if any will try some OF this March too?
Totally using the fun drugs on this but…. it would be pretty crazy if Trout, Rendon, Moncada and Anderson all had a revival this year. We’d suddenly be very good, at least on offense.
This is the best signing the Angels have made in years. Yes, serious.
Angels Sign Yoan Moncada
Perry Minasian seems intent on upgrading the Angels infield and depth and took a low cost flyer on Yoan Moncada today. It is a one year deal worth $5 million and immediately sets the stage for an Anthony Rendon exit.
Moncada was once the top prospect in all of baseball and was part of a mega trade that sent Chris Sale from the White Sox to Boston. A switch hitter with a career OPS+ of 106, he’s been bitten by the injury bug as of late but represents a solid bounce back candidate as he’s only 29 years old.
This is a larger infield upgrade than expected this late in the off season and comes in about a third of the salary projections for Moncada.
