KieBOOM!!!!!!
The Stove is Burning Hot!
To address what someone asked below. The reason why the ChiSux and the AAAA’s can’t get a top 10 pick is because while they may or may not have received revenue sharing, they did not “Increase payroll” after bombing out in 24, therefore they are noi higher than 10th.
That’s the real reason behind Arte, “Increasing the payroll” I believe literally one dollar over last year’s budget and that clears another lottery pick next year for the Halos…of course if we don’t go all the way in ’25.
BTW, now you know why the AAAA’s just signed their biggest FA signing in a looooong time. 😉
(I slay myself)
The A’ss are trying to avoid trouble with the MLBPA over revenue sharing. They have to up payroll even more by opening day
I know a guy with a great contract that would most certainly get them well over the minimum payroll hump for the next two seasons.
And since the A’s have moved out of Oakland they wouldn’t have to worry about him beating up their fans anymore.
Get it done Perry.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Besides, then he’d be right by the Capitol, even though he isn’t Speaker of the Assembly any more.
I’m as giddy as a school girl. Don’t mess this up Perry.
#2 for the halos, that’s ironic. Let’s hopefully pick a top pitcher that can come up and be with the big club after the AS break.
Pick up stix in ’26 (That should be the goal)
Wish there was a college 3Bman at the top of the draft. Then kick Rendon to the curb once and for all.
Really happy with the #2 pick.
Are we eligible for a top-6 pick for the next draft?
Couldn’t find a clear answer on how the eligibility works
Not under the current CBA, nope.
“Under the collective bargaining agreement’s rules, no revenue sharing paying team can receive a lottery pick in back-to-back drafts. “
Gotta hit on this one. Cannot f it up
So, best pick we can get for the next draft is 10? Like the White Sox this year?
It would seem that way, unless they are just referring to CBT paying teams, though it doesn’t read like that.
I think it is three successive times vs two, right?
No three successive times for revenue-sharing recipients, which the Angels are not.
The Wikipedia entry seems much clearer:
“Revenue-sharing recipient teams are limited to receiving lottery picks in two consecutive drafts and non-recipients can get one of the top six selections in a single draft year only. Also, a lottery-ineligible, non-postseason club can only select 10th overall or lower.”
Angels would appear to be one-and-done this year.
#2 is better than #3! It’s difficult…but not impossible to screw up drafting this high.
How did Seattle and St. Louis sneak into the top five?
God may indeed be a Cardinals fan. Meanwhile, the Mariners obviously sacrificed the tender meat of innocent children to their dark master again….
No kidding. Cards getting that pick was Divine inspired.
I’m really pumped the Angels got the #2. It could have gone very differently.
Seattle, just by getting rid of Scott Servais
Nice
I want Bremner, but LaViolette would be pretty fun (assuming Holliday goes #1).
Neto, O’Hoppe, Schanuel, Adell, Moore, LaViolette is a legit legit core of young position players.
Angels supposedly interested in Gleybor Torres as a free agent. Why? Poor fielder. Decent hitter. Will want real money. 🤷♂️
Wash will fix him
oooofff! Not a fan.
Can he play third? That would put Newman at short until Neto is back, Rengifo at second.
Once Neto is back we have this thing called depth. At least a bit.
Gleyber played over 1000 innings of short in 2020 & 2021 but the numbers were pretty brutal. He’ll only turn 28 years old on Friday but he hasn’t played 3rd base since his Scranton/Wilkes-Barre minor league days over 6 years ago.
LETS GOOOOOOO
Will we draft the next Mike Trout or the next Brandon Wood?
Chevy Clarke?
Hopefully an Erstad or Weaver type anchor. Realistically probably a Matt Thaiss.
Erstad was actually a pretty poor #1 over all pick….
Was he really though? Of 59 #1 picks since the amateur draft began, he’s #16 in career WAR, roughly in line with guys like Strasburg and Upton. Even in his draft class, which had some formidable performers, he’s third in career WAR among 1995 first rounders.
His decline was steep after age-31, but he burned fairly brightly in that first decade. He’s no Aiken or Moniak. 🙂
Well then Danny Goodwin sure as hell was a terrible 1-1 draft pick
No, the next Dallas McPherson or Brian Taylor.
So a guy who can play but is made out of glass?
looking at CBS Sports, they list their top 5 draft prospects. Eh….Holliday, then 3 OFs, then a pitcher coming off TJS.
I’d probably stick with Baseball America.
Think Jace can make constant contact at the big league level? Quite the physical beast.
That’s what we’ll be watching this year to see – ideally his K rate falls to 20% or below.
Caglianone was a potential #1 December of last year, and we saw quickly what a little “swing and miss” can become in pro ball. Of course, Caglianone never played CF like LaViolette.
They’ve got a 3B at #7….
With the #2 pick a true rebuild is possible. I think it increases the argument to focus on 2027 and trade away Ward and Rengifo for high level prospects. Lets build something really cool!!
plus we were so bad that after that #2 pick we’ll get the #5 in each succeeding round, which isn’t bad at all.
While we still try to compete .
Awesome
#2… lfg. Losing won’t be fun for a year or 2 but the team will be fun to watch.
I feel like the biggest news coming out of this is that the Angels have an actual assistant GM.
WE’RE NO. 2!!
WE’RE NO. 2!!
WE’RE NO. 2!!
Let’s hope we fare better than the LA Flakers with three successive No.2s.
Perry, we believe!
Guys like Bremner and Arnold just aren’t available to the Angels outside of a top 3-5 draft selection. It’ll be interesting if the Angels return to the relative safety of a high ceiling college arm with the #2 selection. They tend to retain their value for a few years on the trade market.
Given the poverty of the Angels’ development system, I’d be nervous selecting a prep bat like Holliday with a chip this blue.
You assume it will be a college player that has proven himself
I have no assumptions about what Minasian’s draft room will do with a pick this high.
I’m just speaking to the economic realities of an Angels team that struggles to obtain frontline pitching, and the fact that good college arms tend to go very early in the draft.
A Catcher, then move him to 3rd.
Or first or OF. Hilarious.
I personally don’t have much of an issue with drafting an advanced OF power bat early. The hit rate isn’t bad, and the Angels really have nothing in the system currently that looks like a 30+ HR OF, unless we’re fairly optimistic about Moore in LF.
The success rate with early drafted first basemen however is pretty low.
The UCSB guy.
Would picking a college bat allow us to generate more extra slot money to use on late picks?
Asks Perry. 🙂
Though…. and I’m dreaming here…. this is pretty much new ground for the Angels under Arte. Maybe PTP and his two friends/staff in the FO/kitchen can talk Arte into seeing how drafting this high, not just for 1 round but for the first say 6 rounds, is a real opportunity to SAVE money by investing in guys who will develop both the guys from last draft and this one.
At this point Arte can be shown the value of guys like Neto and Logan…. even Ward. And maybe sold on the value of developing five of those type guys.
Maybe?
Nah. Let’s spend 250M on Burnes so he can be on a crap team till he’s 37.
Wow, spaced out, busy at work and missed the loto. Very PLEASED.
Congratulations to all!
We made the front page, read all about it.

the two teams with the best chance to go #1 ended up at #4 and #7. I still think, despite us getting a good pick, this lottery has too many slots (1 through 6) that punish the teams like, this year, Miami and Colorado.
Wasn’t that the point. To keep teams from Astroing the system?
I think so but this is too much. We didn’t tank, we just weren’t good and there was a possibility we could have fallen to 9th.
Im fine with that (obviously because we didnt get burned).
Losing should be disincentivized
