LA Angels Tuesday News Crash:

Thirteen players got qualifying offers this year.

These are 50 top free agents with salary predictions.

The Cardinals re-signed Packy Naughton to a two year minor league deal.

Somehow the Angels got no mentions among the Silver Slugger Award finalists.
The Era Committee announced eight names who will be considered for the Hall of Fame at the winter meetings.

Gerrit Cole will stay with the Yankees after all.

Happy Election Day—or is it Voting Day? I keep forgetting. Either way, everything will be just fine once pitchers and catchers report in the spring.
Saw a few ideas floating around about a Angels Miguel Cabrera trade that never happened. Sure, it would’ve been expensive, but back then, it might’ve felt worth it if it meant Nick Adenhart was still here. Life > Baseball.
If the angels sign any free agents, I’d be all for veterans on short-term deals to help the team grow without bogging us down long-term. Is it just me, or does the hot stove seem a little hotter than usual already? I wonder if players are looking to lock in deals with the TV contract situation feeling iffy.
Also, more calls for a salary cap are popping up. It probably won’t happen yet, but if the Dodgers keep spending like the Yankees used to, it could be on the table eventually. If it does happen, a salary floor needs to be part of it, and I’d love to see a tougher penalty for signing free agents.
As for the Qualifying Offer list (aka things we can’t or shouldn’t have), how about telling Arte that nobody over 26 is allowed?
And finally—Yankees release Rizzo? Alonso a free agent? This should be interesting.

Alex Bregman and Teoscar Hernández are two of the players who received qualifying offers. I don’t see anyone giving up a draft choice to sign them. Bregman is only worth 20-25M for 3-5 years anyway. Matt Chapman had a better year than Bregman and signed with the giants for 25M a year for 5 years so Bregman’s market is pretty set.

I would like to have Bregman for 5 years 125M if we didn’t have to give up a draft choice. I know not many here would but he would solve a problem for the next 5 years and we have no foreseeable long term solution.

Bregman exists in a market where Chapman got a fat deal. There just aren’t a lot of 3B available ever.

That’s true and Chapman had a great year. GG defense and a 125 OPS+ for 7.1 WAR. His contract could be a bargain assuming he doesn’t collapse. Bregman was at 118 OPS+ and 4.1 WAR with similar defense. Even if we were getting something like that from Rendon we’d be ok. Based on Chapman’s contract and year, Bregman is only worth 20M/yr which is the value of the qualifying offer. I got carried away with the 5/125, 5/100 would be more realistic.

By the way, only 9 players in the AL were worth more WAR than Neto, but 2 were SS. At 23 he has room to be even better.

We need to find a young 3B that’s blocked and trade for him.

Last year – if I remember correctly- MLB Trade rumors was off by a lot on most free agents. Ohtani clearly went well north of but many players took significant haircuts from the predicted deal. I remember thinking that last offseason was the first one in memory where Borass’ strategy of seeking top dollar for every one of his players backfired and the player had to choose between a much lower offer than they were expecting and not playing.

I wonder if that factored into how the Cole extension negotiations worked out.

It appears to be a pigs get fed, hogs get slaughtered market.

The Cole thing turned quickly. I’d bet that the Yankees called his bluff.

Yes. The TV rights issue has caused perceived future money to disappear. Budgetary realities will stifle the contract values. Only 3 teams in the league are not seriously impacted.

That was all purely administrative. The Yankees knew it would cost way more to replace Cole and Cole knew all he had to do was opt out and the Yankees would give him his extra year. It’s why that was in the contract. If Cole had totally fallen apart the Yanks could get out. He didn’t. So he got his cookie.

There was zero chance the Yanks don’t take the option and both sides knew it.

St. Louis re-signed my topTop rotation target yesterday. Great organizations know who to sign and get them signed early.

Dump Perry should have been on this one. It would have bugged one person on CtPG so much that it would have been worth the signing.
