LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Clase Dismissed

The Tigers won game 2 of their ALDS against the Guardians 3-0 when Kerry Carpenter homered off Emmanuel Clase.

The Royals won game 2 of their ALDS series with the Yankees 4-2. Jazz Chisholm Jr. says they just got lucky. Others say the Yankees just weren’t all that good.

Chisholm apologized for dissing the Angels on Saturday.

Here are some musings by Rhett Bollinger on what may happen in the off season for the Angels. Jo Adell made great strides this season defensively. If he can just master those batting changes, he might also come into his own on the other side of the ball.

Tucker Davidson did not accept his assignment to Triple-A and has elected free agency.

Matt Bush caused a multi-vehicle accident while allegedly driving drunk, tried to flee the scene of the accident, and refused to take a sobriety test. Fortunately, nobody was killed. I’m no expert on Texas law, but if that guy even had a driver’s license he is not going to have it for long.

Projecting When Non-Playoff Teams From 2024 Will Reach MLB Postseason Again

Los Angeles Angels: 2031

The Angels couldn’t make the playoffs with two generational talents in the prime of their career, so it’s hard to find any reason to believe their fate is going to change in the near future.

They do have some nice young pieces to build around in Zach Neto, Logan O’Hoppe and Nolan Schanuel offensively, but they are still a long way from contention.

Mike Trout is under contract through 2030. How brutal would that be if their next playoff appearance was the year after he retired?

Under the current circumstances I don’t see a path but as Gitch mentions below, strange things do happen. We currently have no where near the talent of the 2002 club though. If my memory is correct, with out looking it up I believe they won 99 games. It isn’t happening next year for sure without a significantly different roster.

Not appropriate to compare them to the 2002 team since that group was the best team in all of Major League Baseball. Since we are just talking about making the playoffs and not actually winning there it would be more appropriate to compare the current squad to say, 2014 or 2009 teams … We still fall short on talent, esp. on the pitching side. But that would be a better comparison.

I’ve always wanted to write this, and maybe now is the time: Can you please just shove your “We’re not going to compete until 20xx at the earliest” opinions up your butt, along with the attendant thoughts about rebuilds and players we might as well trade or not sign next year because winning is out of the question? This is baseball. Shitty teams routinely discover chemistry and out-perform expectations. Winning has that magical alchemy sometimes. You/we should know this as well as anyone, because literally no pundit pegged us for champions in 2002 and most picked us for the cellar. And here’s the ESPN artifact to prove it:

https://www.espn.com/mlb/s/2002/1029/1452820.html

So, you know, bring on Soto. Keep Ward and Rengifo. Keep “efforting.” It could all come together. You don’t know. I don’t know. However it pans out, sure a lot better than resetting this fantasy “rebuild clock” that only really applies to hard-capped, low-payroll teams anyway.

Woo. What a rush.

If chemistry happens that’s awesome. Please show me the team with a near total lack of talent where raw chemistry and good will carried them to victory. Sure, chemistry can help a team like the Tigers overtake a team like the Twins and beat the Astros in the play offs. But it doesn’t turn Griffin Canning into Steve Carlton.

The Tigers, 2002 Angels, 2015 Royals, etc tec did a bunch of smart stuff and THEN also had luck and chemistry. We need to do some smart stuff. “Just go for it! Spend half a billion dollars! Let the unicorn mount YOOOUUU!” isn’t smart stuff.

They’ll use the old “injuries ‘O plenty” and probably keep him.

And as an angel fan, even I look at the Dodgers this year and, say man, that’s a shit load of injuries!

If they had a real front office they would have the depth to easily overcome injuries. And if their owners weren’t total pieces of shit.

Actually, the Gugenheim’s really are shitty….. that’s funny…..

I love Roberts (See Red Sox comeback against Yankees when down 3-0 games in ninth inning of game 7) but, who will cry about having a ball thrown at him with “intent” if they fire him.

All I know is he’s got his “concerned white lady from LA” vibe down. He sounded just like a woman who owns a white BMW SUV trying to stuff some extra drama into her reasons why they shouldn’t be allowed to open a Dollar General store six blocks away from her street when he was talking about Machado throwing the ball “at him” kinda hard rather than the dugout he was in.

So he’s pretty much perfect for the Doyers.

Arte says he’ll spend more money next season:

Arte: Perry, what was last year players’ salaries?

Perry: Total of XXX million dollars

Arte: Add $2.50 to that and that is our target budget for 2025.

Even keeping payroll the same gives them a fair amount of room. Between Moore, Drury, Luis Garcia, Carlos Estevez, Cisnero, and Adam Cimber, they’re shedding about $27 million in payroll. Sandoval will either get DFA’d or get some sort of two year deal that pays him less than the $5 million he made this year.

Ward and Rengifo should get some sizeable increases, but nothing too crazy. The others will get some token increases, but I wouldn’t expect Detmers, Moniak, or Thaiss to break the bank in their first arb year.

I wrote a long piece, in my head, that covered my personal fandom history but thought “that’s too long” so I cut it down. Then I cut it down some more. Now it’s just this…

If Stan Musial could play OF and 1b (and would have DH’d if they’d had it in his later years) then Mike Trout can spend plenty of time not being in CF and not take it personally. It’s a normal thing.

Baseball isn’t always logical, but that’s part of what makes it so special. I didn’t fall in love with the game because of stats or wins—it was because a kid in third grade, someone I thought was cool, came running out of a classroom shouting, “YES! The Reds won the World Series!” That was it. From then on, my heart tells me who to root for, and that’s why baseball stories make the best movies.
In my perfect season, the Angels win every game all the way through the World Series, while the MFYs (Yankees) lose every single game. If I had to choose, I might actually take the Yankees losing every game. Last year was a win in my book when they missed the playoffs, and this year, I’ve enjoyed watching them lose one in the postseason. The beauty of baseball is the hope that always keeps you coming back.
Detroit’s improbable journey this year made me smile. They were a long shot, but now they’re in the divisional series and tied 1-1. I love stories like that. I also have to admit, when Harper came up, I was all-in on Team Trout. But over time, I’ve gained a ton of respect for Harper and how he’s played his career. So, if the Phillies win, I won’t be too upset. Still, I’d love to see the Mets win it all, just for the joy of seeing their fans trash talk the Yankees.
And of course, there are the Padres. Even if Manny Machado isn’t the most likable guy, I’ll root for them—mainly because I can’t stand Dodgers fans. Tony Gwynn plays a small part in that (about 5%), but the other 95% is just my distaste for the way some Dodgers fans act, and from what I’ve seen in various videos, I know I’ve made the right choice.

Harper was a douche. But he grew up and got his act together. Now he’s a guy I enjoy watching. Especially because I can’t seem to watch Trout most of the time. And, God bless the man and his family, but honestly, I don’t give a shit about his kids, I don’t care about his feelings about where he plays, I just want him to be fairly good at baseball for most of a season at some point. I don’t need to see him flying a kite or feeding some fish with a little kid ever again, I need dingerz.

Harper was young, and though Trout was also young, Trout seemed more emotionally mature.

Now, as gitcho has said, Harper grew up, and yes, he is great to watch.

The angels will be in a much better position to try to compete in 2026 and 2027 as opposed to 2025. Trying to compete in 2025 would require them to keep players like Ward, Rengifo, and Anderson, that they need to trade for future assets and delay them from moving forward. To me it would be very similar to not trading Ohtani. They have to be really bad for at least 1 more year and maybe 2. The few young players they have in the minors that are referred to as close to major league ready don’t look like they will be ready until 2026 in my opinion.

It would not surprise me if Arte went after Juan Soto, who I know a lot of people here don’t like, but the cost to get him to come here would be prohibitive.

I’ve been saying all along that I don’t believe the Angels will be in a position to be competitive again until Rendon goes off the books.

I can’t remember because all the “We will compete for the ________” type statements after each season since I was born by every owner of every team I follow in every sport have blurred together.

Did Arte say we were gonna compete in 2024?

What did we do over that off season?

I know he said payroll will go up and I believe him. But how much up is in that up? I’m really hoping he kind of stays cheap and evil for one more year. This FA class has a top end of players that don’t do much for us at this point in our franchise. We all know that the budget is likely between 180-210M per season every year. I’d really rather NOT tie that up right now so we can finish with “just” 89 losses next year.

But there are guys out there who he could spend some on that will help next year and may even be useful in 2026-27 too. I also hope for a bunch of signings that are “dumpster diving” that doesn’t “move the needle” for those of us around here who demand a championship effort every year from others. Dive into that dumpster my dear platypus! Maybe try to get some fairly cheap power in the line up so we’re not boring as fk to watch? Some depth arms?

It still gets me emotional that Rengifo, Ward and Anderson are still on the team and I need to get over it. But “the kids” is still too short a list of names. It would be great if we added to that…. and of course if we trade those guys we know we are indeed rebuilding even if the post season comments state otherwise.

I think everyone’s pretty sure Soto’s staying a Yankee. The guy obviously loves money and attention… he’s getting both in New York.

We should offer to help the Yankees sign Soto by using our new found payroll and trading a bag of balls to the Yankees for Gioncarlo Stanton, Spencer Jones, George Lombard, Brock Selvidge and Ben Hess.

For a moment I was thinking “Angel’s legend?”, but then I remembered he finished up his career here before the team traded for Tommy John. I fondly remember Tiant from the 1975 World Series, second only to 2002 for pure excitement.

He was a really great story. Went from Cuba to Mexico to the USA and had an electric arm in the 60s where he enjoyed lots of success. He then got hurt in 70′ and couldn’t throw as hard which forced him into reinventing himself with the spinning wind up and the pauses. Truly an original character and a guy that really understood that pitching is about deception.

I went to a game with my dad in the 60s that saw Dean Chance Pitch against Tiant. The game ended 1-0 Angels in 15 innings. Chance pitched the whole game and Tiant pitched 12 innings. Definitely a different time. I saw Tiant a few times and it was fun watching him pitch. He was unique.
