LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Ryan Miller

The Angels placed Matt Moore on the injured list and selected right-hander Ryan Miller from Salt Lake.

The Giants placed several guys on waivers, including Thairo Estrada. They were not designated for assignment. If they go unclaimed, the Giants can go ahead and keep them on the roster. Infielder Nick Senzel cleared waivers and elected free agency.

Miguel Andujar had season ending core surgery while Jorge Mateo ended his season with elbow surgery.

we’ve lost 7 in a row, and one of the worst clubs in MLB right now, but thank the good Lord above we aren’t celebrating and wetting ourselves over a pet dog on a bobblehead.

No truth to riot police being dispatched in a precautionary move by LAPD. On the other hand, the National Guard is on alert.

Had the Angels claimed their division title in 11 of the past 12 years, I might have been more inclined to show up for an Ohtani doll. It’s the kind of problem any fan would love to have—dominating the division so consistently that the real challenge becomes finding room for all the memorabilia celebrating yet another winning season.

I was shocked yesterday….watching all the Saintly worship, I actually heard a reporter mumbling something about he once played for the Angels.

His dog has mange and eats its own poop.

Take heart, Halo faithful… our very lowest-level minor league team is playing for the Dominican League championship!

Arte discontinued all boats and planes to/from the DR, so they are stranded.

Post-script: Our No. 29 prospect Ubaldo Soto was DSL Pitcher of the Year. Super-stingy 1.29 ERA. Fastball touches 97 and has additional projection.

Biggest disappointment for us was probably Detmer’s demise or maybe it was Trout or Redone not performing.

Biggest surprise must be the play of Neto.

Rendone is just one long multi-season disappointment. It is so bad we should not even use that term anymore because what do we rationally expect from him? Exactly what we are seeing. One can only be disappointed if something happens that is way less than expectations. Rendone 2024 is exactly as any rational expectations anticipated based on ‘23 and ‘22 and ‘21.

By the way, in FIVE SEASONS, Rendon has hit a total of 22HR, 49 doubles. And 122 RBI. Thus, it took him 5 seasons to do, basically, what he did in 2019. Likely the worst free agent contract of all time and he’s an Angel for 2 more seasons!

It’s gotta be Trout’s health for me. This was the season for him to bounce back, and instead his body falled him again.

Depressingly disappointing.

You still have to be eating unicorn 🦄 💩 to believe Trout will have any kind of comeback season at his age and with his history over the last 5 years.

Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to be optimistic and then highly disappointed. Comebacks are not random or luck based, you can see evidence of a slow climb back in prior seasons. There is nothing about Trout’s last 5 seasons that suggests anything other than he is in the twighlight of his oft-injured career. Another AWFUL long term contract.

Are you forgetful or purposely omitting the fact that Trouty slugged 40 💣s in {checks notes} 2022? The health demise is real, but acting like there was no chance he could’ve bounced back isn’t something I’ll agree with. Believing in the bounce bounce now is much harder.

His contract extension was earned and deserved. A shame it’s played out the way it has.

Look at the last 5 seasons as a whole and tell me what it portends with a player who will be 34 in 2025.

What led me to hoping for a comeback season …

2022 = 40 💣s
2023 = fluky hamate injury

Moving forward, I agree with your 2025 outlook and beyond for Trouty

All Trout has to do is stay healthy—a simple task, right? It’s a bit like saying all you have to do to fly is to throw yourself at the ground and miss. Easier said than done! Trout’s talent is undeniable, but keeping him on the field sometimes feels like trying to catch lightning in a bottle. Just when you think he’s set for a season of magic, fate throws a curveball. Still, if he can somehow manage to dodge the injury bug, the sky’s the limit for what he can achieve. But as we know, in baseball, as in life, it’s never as easy as it sounds.

This season may have fallen short in the win column, but it’s not too far off from what many predicted. The real excitement, though, comes from the unexpected progress of some key players. Adell’s development in right field has been a pleasant surprise, showing flashes of the potential fans have been waiting to see. Neto has been holding his own at shortstop and may develop into an all-star, proving that he’s more than just a promising rookie. And then there’s O’Hoppe at catcher—his performance might have been somewhat anticipated. It’s these bright spots that keep the season interesting, even when the win-loss record is far from what we deserve.

Sandoval, Canning,
and Drury, all played disappointing baseball as well.

With the Dog Days of August closing and the best we can hope for would be to pass the Colorado Rockies in the standings must mean changing one narrative for another and that simply is who will be the September call ups, now that’s what I call excitement! Rooting for the worst minor league system of the MLB teams, I await with bated breath the call ups that will excite us into a hopeium stage of believing that we will learn that we have a slew of winners that will turn this team into believing that the future, while being just around the corner, can produce a winning record. Does this hopeium come in pill form? 9 losing seasons in a row, gawd what a roll we have been on, and it gets better, 10 years since we showed up for the Playoffs. well, maybe next year….. 🙃

Luckily the law of averages always applies and although it may have been a decade or whatever since the team was seriously relevant, we are that much closer to being relevant again. You just have to believe in the law of averages and stay the course until then.

What law of averages applied to the team in its 1st 3 decades of the franchise?

My point is that you can’t count on luck or fate in baseball. Organizational change in philosophy and execution is what drives change. With the worst minor league system in baseball we may be waiting a long time for “fate”.

I just don’t see this team as having the kind of “luck” you are referencing until Arte is gone.

Luck is rarely a meaningful factor over a full 162 games. For short stints maybe – but not a full season.

There is no rational reasoning to bring back Rendone next season.

Whether it’s all the injuries or the fact that he doesn’t care, his time in Anaheim is over. Performance matters and he fucking (August) sucks.

One of the worst contracts in professional sports history. DFA him and move on.

In other news, we sit solidly in 3rd position for the best draft lottery odds. 4.5 GB of Colorado, and 6 GB of Miami

Meh. Let his ass stand out there until he’s blocking a prospect at 3rd.

You’re already paying him, we have no plans to win in the near future. Make it embarrassing for him.

Playing the part of Nostradumbass, I predict the Halos run Rendone next year and probably cut him late in the season. That way they only have to have the stadium employees pull down his yellowing and poorly aging portrait and not need a replacement until the 2026 season.

on MLB network a couple weeks ago, Zach was singing Anthony’s praises telling us to ignore what outsiders spout.

Keep Anthony and send Sam Blum to a AA club in the hicks.

I’m aware of Neto’s comments. Of course he’ll stick up for his teammate.

We aren’t paying $35 million per year for him to be a good dude in clubhouse. Anthony Rendone’s job is to be good at baseball. If any of us were this bad at our job we’d be fired. DFA him

What I don’t know and likely most of us don’t know is what kind of insurance the Angels have on Rendon’s contract. If they have insurance and DFA him, they can’t collect on that.

What do you expect? Neto to throw him under the bus? You should not take what these guys say in public at face value.

Your eyes and the statistics don’t lie.

Sadly, we have no better alternative to Rendon. There are no third base prospects even close to where they would benefit from mlb time. You want more Dreary?

Rendone is slugging under .300. The bar is set so low at 3rd base, I have little doubt we can find someone to replace Tony’s production.

Also, the answer to your question is Luis Rengifo (at least for 2025).

If they DFA Rendone, I don’t see Arte spending for Bregman or Chapman.

They may be forced to draft a top 3B college player and bring him up quickly.

That would be exactly the kind of stupid move the Angels would make, overpaying for an aging player who’s best years have come and gone.

Didn’t we draft the 3B kid from TCU? He looked good in ST but then got a knee injury and has been out. He’s the future 3B and when he’s ready its bye bye Rendon. If Rengifo was healthy I think he would have been cut but we literally have no one left.

If Moore is ready at 2B and Rengifo is back next year then Rendon is a bench piece until a rookie is ready to play or Rengifo is traded.

i looked at all those 3B we have used since 2020.

Good news – Anthony Rendon is by far the best of them.

Huh? That’s poppycock.

And even if you want to make that argument, even a low level free agent could play that position more productively than Rendone.
