Angels Beat Nats Before Noon

Morning Angels fans. If you are just waking up, the Angels played the Nats already. Yawn. Why do they have morning games anyway? Anyway, Jack Kochanowicz pitched today. He went 7 and 2/3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits, striking out 2 and walking 1. Very Olympics name for the final day of the Olympics and a Gold Medal performance as well.

As for the hitting? The Angels managed to score lots thanks to the blunders of the Nats more than anything. But hey, you take those. Taking advantage of mistakes is what teams should be doing, even this team is full of talented players. Especially since tons of the baserunners were walks. Great eyes, team!

Highlighted Recap

This was a quiet one until the 4th, when the Nats booted a grounder, allowing the Angels to score first!

1-0 Angels

And a GIDP also scores another run. Not ideal, but, it works?

2-0 Angels

I would like more, good thing Pillar cleared the bases with a double!

5-0 Angels

After that blitz, the Angels now had a big lead halfway through the game, and that was despite hitting into 3 double plays.

What really helped was all those walks. Double digit walks for the Angels. And in the 7th, the Nats walked in another.

6-0 Angels

Jack was cruising until the 8th, when he allowed a home run.

6-1 Angels

He still tried to get through the inning, but allowed another run and was yanked.

6-2 Angels

Oh well. The bullpen got out of that jam and the Angels loaded the bases and got NOTHING in the 8th.

Joyce came in for the 9th and while it wasn’t a save, he was the best option.

Neto helped get that first out with a great play.

Nice

Which was needed as Joyce started blowing it, allowing lots of baserunners, and a run.

6-3 Angels

And then he walked in a run.

6-4 Angels

But a GIDP allows the Angels to win 6-4. WHEW

Upcoming

The Angels return to the Big A, facing the Blue Jays Mon-Wed and then the Braves next weekend. No game Thursday, remember that.

If kochan can get better control, he could be a solid pitcher, he has some nice movement on his pitches.

Does he have enough variety of Plus pitches to remain a starter though?

With the current Angels roster, he’s a legit starter. On most other MLB rosters he’s AAAA organizational filler.

Yep. He needs work, but as long as we’re doing 7 months of Spring Training might as well let him get a look at MLB hitters and get some video, etc so they have a place to work from. He’s looking better. That’s nice. If he can get a little more control, and control within the strike zone, you can squint and see how he is a solid starter.

My bet is that Bachman is gonna get a dose of MLB starts too soon, mostly for the same reason. Kind of set a development tone before the off season and ST 2025.

Silent C
Bachman
Daniel
Fulmer

…. all look like guys who will be told to get ready for March cause they have a shot. Dana will start out in the minors but will likely be in MLB camp a lot in Tempe too. B DamnRight will get the chance to make some magic. I think Canning and Sandoval will also get the work over from Barry.

I could be wrong here but Bachman appears to me late inning relief material at best. He was one guy where rushing him up to the big leagues has failed. Needs to work on his secondary pitches and his control issues. It won’t magically fix itself pitching in meaningful ballgames.

Bachman’s velo is down AGAIN, and he always finds himself rehabbing an injury.

It would be cool if he somehow ends up as a high leverage reliever for us, but I’m not expecting much. Too many red flags (that Turks told us about on draft day).

Bachmans made 14 starts this year, has zero relief innings, a WHIP under 1.3 and 2.5 K/BB. So we can repeat the scouting report from the day he was drafted all we want but the team that holds his papers is still gonna try him as a starter. It may not work, he’s only got 50 IP in those starts, etc. but the Angels are almost certainly looking to max out his chances as a starter.

Joyce clearly had a rough outing but, there’s still relevant “experience points” earned by gutting thru it.

Terrible hitting with RISP all series. Stuff happens.

Hopefully Mickey can finish around.250 and Jo around .225. All things considered, not too shabby. Both are low cost options for at least 2025 with room to grow.

I Hoppe we have another good catcher…..

Catching prospect Yonathan Aro out of Venezuela Angels are favorites to sign him

So with Daniel starting tomorrow I doubt Silent C makes the team charter back to john Wayne. The Angels need bullpen help and he’s odd man out

My guess is it’s Cisneros since hes had 2 rehab assignments so far in AAA. if they dont think hes ready Im thinking its Rosenberg since Hes already on the 40 man and tomorrow would be his the 5th day since his last start and they probably want length.

But man the bullpen looks alot different (not for the better) since trading Garcia & Estevez.

I doubt the Angels want to add anyone else to the 40 man that they would regret jettisoning later since I am still anticipating the ascension of St Moore by this Friday.

Watched mainly the east coasters broadcasters the last couple weeks- this what each one said, every team every night. It’s like a cliché:

Ron Washington is teaching these kids to play, teaching them to win and you’re starting to see them play the game right.

Ron Washington is the best thing to happen to this team in a long, long time.

Well, what can we say, this is development baseball and we saw some good things in this series as far as development. I also prefer wins over losses so today was nice.

Let’s follow the Trash Pandas this evening.

That was almost awful but it turns out it wasn’t.

We could have, should have swept but ping pong balls. Do they still do it that way?

It goes to show what I always say is true : “Don’t put your closer in to close games in a non-save situation.”

We saw how many times that approach f_cked with Estevez. And it f_cks with most closers to be honest …. if you do ever do it you should have an 8-10 run lead !!
