LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Seasons Ending

Both Luis Rengifo and Chase Silseth have had season ending surgeries. All the cool kids are doing it. Granderson is available, when it comes to discussing what he thinks Mike Trout’s legacy will be. This is a video link which will make you watch a commercial about women’s soccer first. Patience is required.

Logan O’Hoppe and Tyler Anderson are rising incrementally in rankings by position while Luis Rengifo is instead falling, of course. No other Angels are getting much attention.

The Trash Pandas should sue Fox Sports MLB for this funny little White Sox clip.

The Orioles signed J.D. Davis. Tyler Duffey is now a free agent.

Right-Handed Pitcher Injuries

Cubs right-hander Adbert Alzolay will undergo Tommy John surgery. Brusdar Graterol has a grade three hamstring strain. Grayson Rodriguez has lat discomfort. (Me too.)

Cueto pitched a gem in SLC.

No runs through 8 and a third. Did leave a runner on second.

I can’t wait until the end of the season to do a WAR analysis to see how much Washington actually added.

We could take last year’s win total and subtract wins based on WAR that departed from the team (like Shohei) or was lost due to injury this season (Trout, Sandoval). I don’t think we signed much new WAR onto the team, but you could argue we gained some due to getting more from players that were injured last year (O’Hoppe). Year over year changes in WAR for players like Neto or Drury would be attributed to Washington and not used as part of the calculation.

Compare what our record should have been to what it actually is at the end of the year, and the difference is the Wash effect.

My fellow Idahoan, Michael Stefanic is hitting .304 in 52 plate appearances after hitting .290 in 71 plate appearances in 2023. His OBP is .373 this year and was .380 in 2023.

I see no reason for him to not play everyday the rest of the season as we don’t need to see Drury or Guillorme.

.348 this year, .355 last year. OPS+ is 103 for both years so just above average.
I would think that he would hit more doubles with more experience at the big league level.

He’s not blocking anyone right now and I think his defense proficiency is underrated, but I just dont think the Angels could have success long term with 2 banjo hitters ( Him and Schanuel) in the same lineup everyday.

If he can play a competent third base then I think he becomes a valuable bench piece.

I’m completely with you on letting Stefanic play. I would like to know if Stefanic should be in the infield mix for next year. He has nothing to prove in AAA since he’s been hitting there for 3 years running.

I don’t think Stefanic could be the core to any team, but if he can have a .350 OBP (it’s been over .450 in AAA the past two years), he could add some value.

I know we’re all excited about Christian Moore, but I have no problem with the Angels being a little patient there even if it’s just to control service time. Let’s let him see a few more pitchers before bringing him up.

I don’t think they’ll sign anyone as a free agent for the infield. Could Stefanic make it as a starting second baseman (if Moore needs more seasoning) or 3rd baseman (for when Rengifo and Rendon are out).

Like you said, except for rest, we really don’t need to watch Drury or Guillorme.

There’s no harm in playing “the kid” though. If he’s a solid contact hitter for realbees and can maybe pick up LF in addition to being a meh infielder this off season maybe he’d be a useful bench piece.

Moore as a college player and unlike a prep player, probably doesn’t need to worry about having a 4-year minor league start. Bringing Moore up on 9-1 would give him added experience for next Spring. Nothing wrong with testing out the inventory for a month by bringing a bus load of the Kids up.

I think the strong expectation is that Moore will be called up around August 16 for the home series with Atlanta. It’s the earliest he can be called up to preserve his rookie eligibility in 2025.

The Angels haven’t been hurt in calling their college position players up early, so I don’t see any harm in it.

The opposite is true when it comes to their drafted arms – their accelerated development has coincided with injuries and irregular performance almost across the board. Unless it’s a bullpen-only arm, there’s a reason most teams give even college players a couple years of seasoning before call-up. Conditioning and repetition is a huge part of development – and college players don’t take the ball every five days for 6+ months straight.

That’s a name I haven’t thought about in a long time.

What they could really use is a High-A division and franchise they feel comfortable sending promising arms to, and as we all know, well, more arms.

A couple more trades of the Estevez variety, and another developmental level/club to place them at, and the Angels would suddenly have an average pitching pipeline, and we’d all begin crying out for more advanced bats.

Do you think having a High A Franchise located 3 hours away Portland or Spokane is part of the problem?

I Was wondering if this was a function of Cheap Arte missing out on not getting a more established franchise location like Vancouver, Portland (Hillsboro) Seattle (Everett) or even Spokane or Boise (which would have been kind of cool with the Franchise’s history there) . when MLB realigned all the minor leagues in 2021.

It just seems ridiculous to me if you cant properly use all of your minor league team levels to develop all of your players. Why even have a team there in the first place if you are unwilling to utilize the facility and completion level?

I think it was really just an unfortunate artifact of minor league contraction. A short season league with unusual park dynamics turned into a critical mid-level league where most teams would hope to place some of their best prospects. Didn’t stop Colorado from sending Condon there, but the environments suppress offense, and there are only six teams in the league, so pitchers get exposed as well.

It probably takes time, and a little luck, to find other communities with resources to accommodate a full-season minor league club – especially given the proximity of the Cal League. If it were an 8-10 club league with a larger geography, it’d probably be a more compelling destination.

when I was a lot younger the Twins had a team in Portland. I interned for a couple of weeks until my wife told me I was done and needed to make some money. Anyway, it was fun, being waved through the turnstile, hanging out with the radio guys, seeing the big stars (?) like Paul Sorrento, Chip Hale, Paul Abbott, as well as highly rated prospects from other teams like Jose Offerman.

So yeah, if there were a team here, especially if it were an Angels affiliate, I’d be at 50 games a year.

This is the issue with finding another A+ location in most of the places people have mentioned thus far. Arte doesn’t own the MiLB affiliates, so it’s not like he can just build a stadium on land he bought in Bend, OR and declare it his A+ team.

You gotta find a town with a stadium (or a plan) that wants an affiliate team.

I think the rosters only expand from 26 to 28 in September, so your bus might be a mini but point taken. If the plan is to get Moore in the lineup for next year then calling him up this season could go a long way in making for a smoother transition.

No bus loads getting called up by any team. MLB Rosters increase by a grand total of TWO. That’s a hard cap of 28 players, September 1. 14 pitchers max.

I guess the silver lining of not trading Anderson is that if he manages to keep his ERA around 3.0 for the rest of the season, he will probably have even more trade value than he did at this year’s deadline. I do think there were legitimate concerns in the market because of his high FIP and the perception that he has been more lucky than good, but a full season of 3 ERA ball may assuage those concerns.

Whether or not Arte is willing to trade him is a different story though

I’m still skeptical. It’s a hard knock life for thirty-something righties with below average control who live at 91-93 mph. Pillar and Anderson are the only trade deadline pieces I’m disappointed the Angels didn’t trade. With Pillar, it appears to have been a personal decision the Angels respected for family reasons. With Anderson, I felt the likelihood of him regressing in the final two months, lowering his off-season trade value, was just as high as him potentially sustaining current performance. That’s probably still the case. Hard to imagine his value higher than it was a week ago, but the off-season does open up recent draftees in trades (there were some good college pitchers the Angels missed on in the recent draft).

I wasn’t surprised that they kept Rengifo and Ward. Recent injuries and underperformance probably made offers underwhelming relative to average or peak performance. Teams clearly dodged a bullet with ‘gifo.

Unless Cheap Arte was going to eat a big chunk of TA’s remaining contract, I never thought Perry would get any real trade offers at the deadline.

Without a viable trade offer, It might have made sense to hold on to him, but then again, trAdition more than ensures an ERA around 5.50 next season.

I really wonder what the offers looked like. I imagine they got a few acceptable ones, but were overvaluing him (ie, just assuming this year’s success will be next year’s).

Could be wrong – maybe they were just receiving offers for teenage lotto tickets. The Angels rarely play the long game. But just looking at the Kikuchi and Blackburn trades, it’s hard to imagine the Angels didn’t have some intriguing offers.

I would guess that the offers weren’t great. Anderson’s peripheral stats weren’t great. The top teams wouldn’t see him as a post-season starter, so his value would only be to teams trying to squeak into the playoffs. Even there, they were probably concerned with his peripheral stats and whether they thought he could continue to be effective.

The Angels would have had to eat salary to get anything of value.

Turk's Teeth

Anderson has never had great underlying peripherals, though, and that didn’t stop a very analytical org like the Dodgers, or pitching-smart orgs like Seattle and Pittsburgh, from taking a chance on him.

Anderson often outperforms his xERA, and in many ways, his underlying peripherals reverted to norms by the deadline. His current xERA is comparable to Kikuchi’s, who earned TOR a King’s ransom at the deadline, and is pretty much inline with his 2021 metrics, which earned him a season with the Dodgers.

Per Statcast, he’s also in the top 10% of the league in suppressing hard contact, and in the top 1% in terms of offspeed run values. It’s not all smoke and mirrors – there’s a lot to like for an analytically inclined team to contemplate.

And fwiw, he has a 2.25 ERA in playoff action, so he’s hardly an arm you’d avoid in the postseason.

Love this!

“There are hot starts to pro ball and then there’s how Moore has played. Through 24 at-bats in five games, he has 12 hits, four homers, 10 RBIs and nine runs. His only unproductive game to date was an 0-for-4 contest on Tuesday, and he quickly learned from that one.

“Yesterday, the approach for them was to throw me offspeeds,” Moore said. “Going into today, I had a different gameplan. I was sitting on more offspeeds in certain counts. It was a good day, putting some good swings on it.”

Moore has dreamed of such walk-off situations since he was a kid. He’s had opportunities here and there but had yet to deliver. Less than two months ago in the NCAA Super Regionals, he came to the plate in the ninth down two runs with two on and two out with a chance to put the Vols ahead and secure a spot in the Men’s College World Series.

“I hit a popup, and moments like that, you don’t really forget,” Moore said. “When you’re in the cage as a kid, ‘All right, last swing,’ That’s kind of the mindset you put yourself in — 3-2 count, I want to hit a walk-off or a game-winning home run. You definitely practice it a lot. For me to actually live it was definitely something cool. Hopefully I get to do it again.”

Quick note-Some jamoke poster on here was quick to flame Moore for that sole 0-fer game.

The Halos need to take a lesson from Adell and even Moniak (Phillie’s mistake) and not start the clock on options if it isn’t necessary. Let Moore come into 2025 ST trying to make the big team.

From Sports Stack Exchange: “When a player is moved from the active roster to the minor leagues he goes through a process called “optioning.” This is a bookkeeping maneuver to move his roster spot and contract from the active MLB roster to the Minor League rosters (usually AAA, but sometimes lower levels).”
If that is correct, as a September call up, Moore wouldn’t be optioned back to the minor leagues so the team should retain all three option years.

There are two downsides to calling Moore up this year.

  1. They would need to carry him on the 40 man roster over the winter. This means they would have one less slot to protect players from the rule 5 draft, etc. They don’t need to protect Moore for a few more years. They would need to excercise an option next year if they were to send him to the minors at the end of Spring Training. They don’t need to do that if he isn’t on the 40 man roster.
  2. It could lead to Moore being a free agent a year earlier if he accrues enough service time.

I’m not saying there aren’t reasons to call him up to get experience that outweigh those considerations, but those are considerations.

Unless I’m misinterpreting the rules, I don’t think #2 is an issue, as “at least 90 days on an active Major League or Minor League roster during a given season counts as one full season”. I’m sure Moore will fall short of that.

As for #1, is there any reason they can’t just reassign Moore to the ACL at season’s end w/o retaining him on the active 40?

jco
Trusted Member
jco

Reply to  Turk's Teeth

For #2, it still counts as a partial season. A full season is 172 days on the 26 man roster or IL. Multiple partial seasons can total a full season. By playing him this year, it takes away the possibility to keep him from getting a full year next year. The rule you cite is only relevant to the designation of option years and counts both major and minor league seasons.

The rule governing service credit toward free agency can be found here: https://www.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/service-time.

Teams often keep top prospects down long enough so that they can’t earn a full-year of service credit their rookie year. That gives the team an extra year of control prior to free agency.

For #1, they would need to pass Moore through waivers in order to remove him from the 40 man. A claiming team would only need to put him on their 40 man roster to keep him (not the 26 man), so he would certainly be claimed.

Agreed on #1 jco, and I was worried about that too but even with adding the injured players back on to the 40 man the Angels should have a enough room on the 40 man roster.to accommodate the only R5 eligible players worth protecting ( IMO are Italian pitcher Aldegheri and Garcia pile pick up Mathew Lugo) so there should be room at the Inn this Winter even if they add Moore in the next couple of weeks.

Relative to #2 According to Roster resource , assuming they are accurate they show Nolan Schanuel not eligible for free agency until the 2030 season even though he was called up on September 1st last year and has never looked back so I would think the Angels would be in the same boat whether he gets called up this year or makes the team out of the Shute next season. Interesting enough, RR also shows Neto will also not be a free agent eligible until after 2030 season so I guess he really got hosed with last years Mid April call up. So it seems like its not about 6 year as much as it is by creating a 7th one.

I’ll take your word on number 1 as I haven’t really delved into what the Angels need to protect. They currently have 44 players on the 40 man (that includes the 60 day DL players). Drury, Moore, Pillar, Cisnero, Cimber are all free agents, so they’ll come off. There are a bunch of non-tender possibilities too (Plesac, Guillorme, Calhoun, etc). They may be perfectly fine with their 40 man space.

You’re absolutely right that by holding Neto back, they created a 7th year of team control (Neto will possibly get an extra year of arbitration). Schanuel and Neto are perfect examples for what we have in Moore. They are both eligible for free agency prior to the 2030 season even though Neto played most of the season with the Halos and Schanuel only had a cup of coffee. This is because Neto only had 170 days on the major league roster in 2023. If the Angels had called him up 3 days earlier, he would be a free agent prior to the 2029 season.

If the Angels had waited to call up Schanuel until a few weeks into the 2024 year (or if they option him for a few weeks if he struggles), then he won’t become a free agent until just prior to the 2031 season.

If they wait to call up Moore until a few weeks into the 2025 season, then they would control him until prior to the 2032 season.

There’s another wrinkle to this that would incentivize the Halos to give Moore a full-year’s service time next year. If Moore gets a full year of service credit next year and wins rookie of the year next year or places in the top 3 of MVP voting prior to free agency, then the Angels would pick up a draft pick between the first and second rounds.

I agree there seems little incentive for him to be rushed to a bad big league team before he’s been tested and developed over the long haul but I’m getting the feeling the Angels are dangling a fast ascension to the bigs to some of their draft picks in exchange for under-slot signing.

if Moore’s rookie statues remains in tact for next year, I believe he qualifies for the Prospect promotion Incentive program which was created to encourage teams to promote players in lieu of trying to conserve arbitration and control years. Moore would have to win ALROY next year to qualify. The Mariners are a beneficiary of this program as they acquired an extra draft pick after the first round in 2023 for JRod winning Rookie of the Year in 2022.

Both Adell & Moniak were high school draftees that got alot of minor league at bats. (565 minor league games for Mickey and 411 games for Jo) each had alarming high strike out and low walk numbers in the minors. In the case of Mickey his minor league hitting stats were not that good ( of course he didn’t had the benefit of playing in some of the PCL bandboxes) when the Phillies decided to promote him.

I don’t we should ignore the 0-fer game with three strikeouts.

Even in college, Moore could be a streaky player, and with an aggressive contact-oriented approach, he may have sustained cold streaks if pitchers adjust, as they will.

It’s great that he’s anticipating the adjustments though, and making his own. But we should be ready (and patient) if he goes through extended cold spells as well.

For S & G’s I went back and checked both Neto’s and Schanuel’s game logs during their brief tenures at AA. Neto never got a hat trick but he did have back to back 2 k o’fer games at the end of August 2022.

Schanuel on the other hand made his AA debut at Rocket City last year going… 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts.

Schanuel was uniquely vulnerable to the low ball – every K was a pitcher’s pitch below the zone. He can still be vulnerable to those when he’s in a cold streak. He’s best when he just spits on those.

Interestingly, Moore’s sombrero was on offspeed pitches all over the place. In and tight, low and away, right down the middle. It’s, as we see, a super aggressive approach, that could result in some peak and trough performance until he gets to know pitchers at the MLB level.

Hes still vulnerable to that pitch at the bottom of the zone. I think Nolan learned a valuable lesson in Seattle getting thrown out after disputing a couple of pitches that looked like they touched the bottom of the zone. He doesn’t seem to have that classic LHB golf swing that could generate more power .

Ironically after that 3 strike out game. Nolan only struck out 6 total times in his next (last) 15 games for Rocket City so even if this problem has been exposed at the Major League level, I’m still hopeful that he is smart enough to adapt his game.

You know what’s funny? I was bored at work so I looked. If Nolan bumps his OPS up but a few more points he’ll be ranked something like 12th among 1B in OPS.

For those of us that have math struggles that’s a little above the middle.

Now, that’s not great at all. But for the guy’s first full season in, you know, baseball… he may even get better. He’ll never be Vlad Jr. But if he even tacks on 5 more HR and hits .270 he’ll be top 10.

And sometimes he looks like a .375 – .400 OBP guy. If he pulls that off with 20 HR…. muy bueno.

People around here talk like we have Beenie Weenie at 1B.

Exactly. I want to see what happens when some coaching staffs have a slide deck on him for their pitchers….

Keep the ju ju shitty my friend. Gotta do it. Otherwise Arte may think someone likes him. We hate Arte.

Let him dominate the minor leagues for the rest of 2024. THERE IS NO NEED TO RUSH HIM TO THE MAJORS!

This is where the cool kids are…bring him up, if he’s ready. If he continues destroying AA, he needs to come up and hang with Wash.

Why? The history of Major League Baseball is rich with September call ups of vaunted rookies in fact many teams would put it in their draftees’ contracts. (Its now banned under the CBA) The experience that Moore gets just sitting on Major League pine and working with Major League Coaches would be invaluable even if he gets no or little game time experience. The Trash Pandas season will be over by September 15th anyways so how many minor league game experiences is he really missing out on? And if he looks overwhelmed and/or has a shitty spring training having start in the minors next year.
Now if you are worried about starting his Major league service time early I get that since I believe he could become a free agent as early as the 2030 season. But its nt my money its Evil Arte’s and I’d rather watch him learn at this level than watch another year or 2 of the Luis Guilorme experience belly flop around the field.

I know there are a lot of quality short stops right now but was surprised Neto’s name wasn’t among them. I imagine he’s going to be forcing his way onto that list before the end of the season.

Adjust Trout out of CF to DH and you got it.

Although no guarantee Trout says yes to DH.

Also no guarantee he stays on the field for more than 55 games. Unfortunately. As a DH it would at least give him a chance to play a majority of the season.

Line-up is fine enough.

its the pitching that continues to make this a 4th place team.

Definitely, but that doesn’t take away from my excitement with the lineup.

Perry has more work to do (Corbin Burnes and/or Blake Snell in FA plzzzzz)

I think everyone believes he’ll be on the IL all season.

He get’s DFA’d when he takes away a spot of someone who deserves to start. Moniak isn’t a starter in the field. He’s a platoon with Adell rigtht now. Ward in the OF with Rendon as the DH.

my disdain for Rendone supersedes any logical argument. If he can’t hit a HR this season, he can’t be on my team.

Good plan but the inclusion of Moniak spoils it for me.
