LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Arte’s Team

Morning Angels fans, last day of July, have some links!

Angels News

The Angels won yesterday! It was a shootout with the Rockies, but they won.

But, in reality, they lost the war. The trade deadline war. Perry only got to trade relievers as Anderson, Rengifo, and Ward are still here. Not even Pillar or Strickland were moved and they are gone after the season. Why? Arte. Even though Perry took the blame, saying that this team will compete in 2025, it is all Arte and we all know it.

Oh and Rendon is back on the IL. Because of course he is.

And Trout won’t be back anytime soon. We cannot have nice things.

But to cheer everyone up, here is MLB’s list of the Angels’ best prospects now. 3, 8, and 11 are from the Phillies and Red Sox in those trades.

Around Baseball

Trade Deadline means lots of trades went down. Busiest by far were the Marlins who sold basically everyone. No way the Angels get the 1st overall pick now.

The Dodgers were busy. Jack Flaherty, Tommy Edman, Michael Kopech, Amed Rosario, and Kevin Kiermaier. That is a lot, but is it really THAT impactful? Who knows, they could have used a Rengifo- nah, Arte would have veto-ed it again.

Mariners made some trades because of course they did. Randy Arozarena, Yimi Garcia, Justin Turner, JT Chargois are new Mariners. They will still not win this pathetic division.

Astros only really got Kikuchi. Well, and Caleb Ferguson.

How about the Rangers? They sold Lorenzen, but also traded for Andrew Chafin.

The A’s sold Lucas Erceg and Paul Blackburn. Could have sold more.

And here is a list grading every trade because there were plenty. Yeah, yeah, Bleacher Report, but hey, no paywall. So, read the rest of them over there because everyone did something, even the Rockies.

Here is the list of all 90 prospects traded, the Angels getting 6 of them. Yay?

Big names that did not move included Skubal, Snell, and Crochet. Prospect hoarding is real.

How real? No top 100 prospect was traded this deadline.

In non trade Deadline news, the Oakland A’s have clinched a winning record vs the SF Giants.

The Rays’ new stadium has been approved! Huzzah! 2028 timeline means it will be done before the A’s one in LV if it ever gets done.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

Bob V vs. Matt V?
My vote is Radio broadcast.

The Angels are trying something unique with their broadcast on Friday.

It will be Bobby Valentine and Mark Gubicza in the booth for Mets-Angels.

There will be no traditional PXP broadcaster, but they are planning to have several guests cycle through, & it’ll be more informal.

I remember when Drysdale was working with Dick Endberg. He was from the Bob Gipson school of pitching and very politically incorrect when it came to throwing at hitters. But it was fun to listen to him.

One of my favorite memories was how Ron Fairly laughed so hard at his own jokes. So much so that his laughing at the joke was funnier than the joke itself. He told a joke one time about the Alou brothers and how one of them could really dance and his name was of course Boog Alou. He laughed so hard he almost fell out of his chair.

Duly noted. We will take under advisement.
…….just a flesh wound.

Anthony Rendon said he expects to have a minimal stint on the IL.

He felt some pain while he was swinging in his back, and it went to his leg. He doesn’t think it’ll keep him out for a prolonged period.

What exactly is an “expects to have a minimal stint” mean?

Who’s minimal stint, Tony’s? Because they already have the minimum days accounted for.

Let’s circle back in mid August.

Interesting that Perry may still be able to make some trades over the next month despite the passing of the deadline since any players not on a 40 man Roster may still be traded.

That means that current AAA players like Jake Marisnik , Keston Huira, Johnny Cueto , Zach Plesac , Bryan Shaw, Amir Garrett or even Zach Plesac could net us a fringe prospect if contending teams are desperate enough to address a playoff stretch need . I know it’s not much but it could be somethin’ for those disgusted with our deadline results.

2 things:

1. Who do we think is going to win RoY? I would love that extra draft pick, even if we end up complaining about how stupidly it was used.

2. I keep thinking about how happy we were when the team was up for sale. Can’t believe it’s been 2 years. I went back and read a few of the articles related to Arte taking the team off the market. Ultimate buttercup. We were so close. What will it take for Arte to be tired of being the owner? Most fans dislike him, and he knows this. He is already rich and can be richer if he sells. His kids supposedly do not want to inherit the team. Baseball people don’t want to work here and view the Angels as dysfunctional and a joke of an organization. I don’t get it. Is it just that he gets to make the calls and be a dictator of this 💩? I will not give up my Angel fandom, but every part of this organization is terrible, and that is such a bummer.

In one of the articles I read, Arte supposedly turned down multiple offers over 2.4 billion, and one offer over 3 billion dollars. He was quoted as saying he wants to keep the team “long term” and would only sale if someone offered him something “stupid”. Would someone even match the offers he received previously? Someone, save us!

Just looked at Gil’s stats. I think you’re right, a Yankee SP having a great year. As long as he doesn’t implode, that seems all but wrapped up. Schanuel would have to go berserk for the rest of the year to have a chance.

Also, I looked at the link you provided, the Red Sux outfielder is named Ceddanne Chipper Nicasio Marte Rafaela. I thought that was funny.

I shouldn’t be surprised that we likely won’t have another legitimate RoY candidate when we call them up so soon into their professional careers. Other teams let their players marinate for much longer.

The Angels got 6 (Klassen), 9 (Aldegheri), 39 (Lugo), 62 (Vargas), 71 (Kavadas) and 76 (Zeferjahn).

BA rates Klassen-Aldegheri in the top 150-500 overall in baseball. (That may seem like a wide range, but they explain that it’s really not.)

Only some people on this blog consider Rengifo a position player. If you read any news site, he is referred to as a utility player (which is exactly what he is). Rengifo is useful at spotting regular position players when they need a day off.

Other than that, he should not be regarded as an everyday player, especially with his horrendous defensive metrics (yes, he does have a good defensive day every so often). He could be successful at DH, but that may just be Trout’s home for the next six years.

I can never see Rengifo as a position player on a playoff team. He would help a playoff team fill temporary gaps due to injuries. You want to know why Perry wasn’t offered a king’s ransom for him? Because everyone knows he’s a defensive liability and you can’t jeopardize a playoff game with him on the field.

Yes, he is having a good year batting so far, but against any decent pitching in the near future, he will drop below .300 and lose even more value. Yesterday was the best day in the history of mankind for Perry to trade Rengifo and he failed the team. The Halos aren’t going to get anything spectacular for him. And yes, Rengifo’s character did come up in a couple articles that I read yesterday. It’s not just me that takes issue with it.

I had to get that off my chest.

Hey nice negativity. According to his total fielding runs above average numbers, he’s actually a slightly better-than-average defensive 3B for his career, and a slightly below-average defensive 2B… with a bat that’s collectively produced 18 more runs than what would be expected at those positions. So while not a superstar he would certainly not scuttle a contender. In fact, he’s a good player who probably deserves everyday play at 2B and 3B, which would improve his defensive consistency. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rengilu01.shtml

Defensively, he has good range and a cannon arm.

The gaffes have subsided with consistent playing time as well.

He leads the team in BA and SB’s but yeah, let’s trot out some vague “character issues”. Yawn.

The mistakes are usually when he shifts (he IS indeed a utility player – no duh!) from one position to the other.

Longer stretches at a single position and he seems to have less bone head plays.

2025 should be more of the same

SP 1: None
SP 2: None
SP 3: Soriano (more of what he is now)
SP 4: Anderson (regression)
SP 5: Canning (innings eater 5 ERA they start against the other team’s ace)
SP 6: next guy in with most innings

CP Joyce
SU Crouse
RP Quijada
RP Marte
RP Contreras
RP
RP

Position players

1B Schanuel
2B Moore
3B Rengifo
SS Neto
C O’Hoppe
RF Adell and his .190 BA
CF
LF Ward
DH Trout

Bench:
OF Moniak (sounds like he’s here for awhile) as the platoon option
C Thaiss (might as well)
IF Rendon but he’s injured
UT Lugo

If Arte signs a huge bat and 2 aces then you can call the team competitive. They’re missing 4 top end players.

People can moan and complain but trading everyone never was going to happen and likely wasn’t good business anyway,. Part of any trades is credibility which means you won’t accept just anything and will pull back and hold if you aren’t getting enough.

They traded the guys you might expect that are free agents and other teams might want. Did people really think the guys they picked up off the scrap heap like Strickland and Calhoun were going to yield significant value? The Angels got them because they were basically free. Other teams think alike. Pillar might have been of interest but every other team is dumping guys and teams might value those guys more or only be willing to pay embarrassing value for Pillar or others. You don’t make those deals. Sorry.

I don’t think anyone considered Strickland, Calhoun as part of the “everyone” we wanted traded.

I listened to about 20 different panels of “baseball people” on various podcasts, etc the last 24 hours.

They are all mystified at all of Rengifo, Ward and Anderson still being here. It makes absolutely NO sense to anyone. There is no way to finish this sentence in a way that doesn’t sound fking stupid:

“Well, maybe they are trying to…..”

Pilar and Rengifo are both the definition of post season heroes. I understand not trading Ward while his value is low, but I can’t believe they couldn’t get value for Heefo and Anderson.

From Blogging the Red Sox article about Yeferson Vargas:

Vargas, who turns 20 this weekend, signed with the Red Sox for $10,000 as an international free agent coming out of the Dominican Republic in December 2022. After making his professional debut in the Dominican Summer League last year, the San Pedro de Macoris native opened this season in the Florida Complex League. He forged a 3.13 ERA and 4.58 FIP with 29 strikeouts to 13 walks in 10 appearances (three starts) spanning 31 2/3 innings for Boston’s FCL affiliate before making the jump to Low-A Salem a few days ago.

In his full-season debut against the Carolina Mudcats last Friday, Vargas struck out five and walked two while allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits over four innings. The 6-foot, 177-pound righty threw 62 pitches (39 strikes) and elicited 10 swings-and-misses, per Baseball Savant. Earlier this month, FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen wrote that Vargas averaged 95-96 mph and touched 98 mph with his fastball during a June outing. He also mixed in an 81-84 mph curveball.

The Angels are 47-60 with $92 million in total salaries. That’s not counting the two injured players.

We’re 26-22 since we hit the bottom.

If Adell can get his shit a little more together and ShamWow keeps getting better we’ll have seen O’Hoppe, Neto, Thaiss the catcher, Soriano, Shanuel, Joyce, Crous and Adell all step into the “viable MLB players” catagory.

That’s pretty cool.

The teams more fun to watch than Ohtani era. The team is also showing the ability to grow and get better under Washingtons and Friends. This is all stuff we have wanted.

Kinda makes you wish we’d traded for some more prospects yesterday…. but hey, we have one more year of Rengifo!

I mean ideally they should have known this offseason whether they wanted to extend him and done it already. At the very least if they know he isn’t interested in playing for them at what they want to pay then they should be trading him in offseason.

Nothing wrong with keeping Rengifo around. Trouble is, he has to want to extend with the Angels. And he has to be willing to extend for 4-5 years.

It would have been better to definitely have two more 50 grade prospects on our farm. Sure, only about 1 in 4 of even the 50s amount to anything, but a team needs to always have those dice rolling and we haven’t for a long long long time.

PedroCerrano

Prospects are like dice rolls at the table. If you can store up 50 of them like the Orioles have you’re going to hit on a few. The Angels are the loser dad who bets money he can’t afford on a few tosses and his kids then go hungry.

I was curious on the math since Rendon and Trout have given so little. You basically confirmed that our payroll isn’t that much above the bottom dwellers so our record is pretty consistent with the roster we put together.

Question I have floating around in my group texts – Is Trout’s body just that slow to heal or a passive aggressive response to the team not seriously trying to win?

Serious question for those who might know. If Arte releases Rendon, he has to pay his remaining salary, but if he keeps him on the roster and Rendon is hurt most of the time, does insurance pay his salary? Is it financially beneficial for Arte to keep him if he’s injured most of the time?

Biggiswrth

Reply to  Roy Hobbs

In a round about way the answer is yes to the insurance question. There is usually a waiting period (30,60,90 days) If they player is still hurt during that time, then the insurance would kick in and pay the salary while the player is hurt.
I’m assuming the insurance company and the doctors are working together during this time to make sure that the injury is legit.
His salary counts again the Lux Tax, but may not all come out of Arte’s pocket

A) The injuries to Rendon are never legit. He’s always faking it.

B) Arte is in on it because he loves flushing hundreds of millions of dollars down the toilet. He also loves incredibly high insurance rates.

C) The insurance companies are in on it because, while they enjoy pissing away money too, they also get free OG’s Pizza at games out of all this.

Rendon just wants to sit around with his stupid family and collect money. He’s cancer.

Agreed, but as long as Rengifo is on the roster, I would rather see him at 3B everyday.

Dont worry, Christian Moore is on the way.

FiFo will be at Third.

The moment that he’s blocking someone is the moment you cut bait. Right now there isn’t a reason to and the insurance is picking up the payment.

Stick Rengifo there and be done with it.

Agreed.

Rendon has an OBP of .289 and an OPS of .562. This continues the serious decline that started in 2021. He is not going to get better, he should be released.

The main issue is that even when hurt his salary still goes towards the cap.

If you release him you still have to pay him but his salary doesn’t count against the cap?

Yes It still counts.

So there is really no incentive to do anything unless you need the roster spot.

Sounds like the IL is the best place for him as he doesn’t consume a roster spot.

Silver lining: I’m finally able to let go of lingering bitterness that Ohtani left. While I fully expected him to go to the Dodgers, I’ve been resentful that he did so while structuring his salary in a way that he did.

However, it is clearer than ever that the Angels are a cargo ship with damaged main sails (Trout and Rendon) desperately fleeing pirates and yet the captain refuses to dump the bulk of its cargo to provide a chance of escape.

Team is owned and/or managed by imbeciles. Fuck Arte.

And yet Arte still manages to turn a profit. Go figure.

Thing is, we don’t know that. It’s endemic amongst stupid people to just look at “networth” and decide Elon Musk has 200 Billion DOLLARZ! or what ever. No. Elon has his companies. If he wants dollars, those companies have to go away.

That’s the super stoopid simple way it works.

THE ANGELS are worth what ever, 2.6 Billion. OK sure. But what are they actually EARNING compared to expenses right now? That line is probably a lot tighter than we think right now.

It may even be why stupid Arte didn’t let PTP trade guys with a year of control left. If profits are down, one more year of cheap Ward means a lot more to Arte than it does to anyone else.

So we may finally be getting to the point we’ve all been wishing for.

Actual cheap Arte.

Let’s have some fun folks! You may finally get to bitch about this and have it actually be true. Actual suffering instead of pretend suffering. Take it all in Lakers fans. We may get to live like Pirates fans for a couple years.

Good news is, this is almost certainly what has to happen for Arte’s fire to snuff out so he sells.

You’re right. We don’t know how much the organization makes or loses but Arte is a successful businessman and if the Angels were losing money, I’m sure he’d have changed out Carpino and company already.

Sadly, I think Carpino has photos of Arte fking an underage couch or something. WTF has that guy EVER done for us?

The Great Pirate Ship Moreno! Arrrrrrrrrrrr.

The Doyers and others sailing around the Caribbean Sea in a brand new luxury cruise ships. Calm seas, noting but, fun, sun, entertainment, lots of food and drink. Good times!

The Angels boat, scurvy, low morale, leaks, doldrums, sharks circling, seagull shit covered decks, eating rat kebabs and drinking sea water.

Minisian “won” both trades, so why does it feel like such a loss. It’s because we had so many other tradable assets and didn’t get anything for them. We’re a drifting ship crashing into the iceberg and no way forward for many years to come.

So where do you think the new guys will debut?
> Klassen: Tri-City? Org loves to push guys, but maybe this is the exception? Hasn’t exactly dominated comp in three upper-A starts.
> Dante Alegheri: AA seems most likely.
> New Lugo: Gotta be SL even though there’s a ton of outfielders there.

Get them quickly with Perry’s player development staff so the work can begin immediately to break their spirits for the 2025 season. There’s no time to waste….

I’m sure they can sacrifice one of Dozier or Marisnick at SLC to make room for Lugo.

He’s Italian, so, “Ol sole mio” or “Ava Maria.” If anyone plays, “Nothing gonna break my stride” for him they need to be gollywhopped.

That was my first thought as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if they asked him if he preferred to play for a contender or stay and ride it out with out young guys. Not surprising if he chose to stay since he is local to the area.

They would look a lot better if they were more publicly forthcoming about stuff like that. It would make it look like they’re actually thinking about what they’re doing.

Angels and the media

Low pressure media, outside “Sam no hat” poking around once in a while. Fletcher misses as many game as Trout, its an easy beat to cover. No real demand for information on the inner workings, no demand for the details of what’s going on upstairs. Mostly coving negative stuff, injuries and poor play and the fluff shit.
We lack winning, to get the average fans into a frothied frenzy. An owner that is secretive, concealing the lack of normalcy in the inner workings of the organization. Even having Shohei didn’t seem to push the needle the way it should have (lack of winning). His experience on the Doyers is very different than it was with us.

Covering the Rays, Marlins, Oakland, assuming Mariners, Nationals, Rockies, don’t know much about the Blue Jay media, assuming its low pressure, and the Angels. Basically, not enough people that care.

This is always the argument that you can’t fully quantify and plays out with other sports/teams including the one across the freeway – how much impact does playing with vets and not completely throwing the kids to the wolves with a truly terrible team have on their development and learning to compete/win vs. losing 120 games like the White Sox. I doubt Pillar was bringing anything more than minors filler so can buy it in this case. Tougher argument on the guys under control but don’t know enough to know if market will be as good or better in offseason with more teams involved or whether if we would just keep some salary we could get better prospects.

I thought that’s why Perry has coaches and player development staff, but who the fuck knows anymore. Lord knows Trout and Rendon can’t set an example for the kids, so let’s keep Pillar on the 26 man roster to do so.

It would seem to me that making him a coach and being transparent would be more effective, but what the hell do I know…..

The first question is whether a prospect is likely to be good enough to get regular playing time on a competitive team. If the answer to that question is no, then it is irrelevant where the prospect would rank in a farm system.

It’s not a big deal. Not like we were getting a top 10 prospect for him.
