LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: RIP Willie Mays

Good morning Angels fans. Have some links.

Angels News

The Angels lost yesterday. Not unexpected. But a bummer. They can win tomorrow though to get a series win.

Rengifo is back. He went 1-4 with a single and a walk.

Mike Trout is still hurt and not progressing much at all. He cannot even run yet without pain.

For Friday and Saturday, things will get hectic. Why? It is that time again for the Freeway series. Going up the 5 to visit Dodger Stadium. They will be without Betts and Yoshi, so this might be possible to win. Of course, the whole Ohtani stuff will be all over the news and get the most attention, which… yeah, I get it.

Around Baseball

Willie Mays has passed away. The all time great was 93. It was peacefully at least. His final message was released on Monday.

We are getting closer to Cyborg Umps. The Challenge system is coming to AAA. It isn’t robo umps, but players will be able to challenge the umps a limited amount of times.

But what about MLB? Well, for now, this is the list of reviewable plays.

Should the Trade Deadline be pushed back? Paul Sewald thinks so. Considering how wide open the playoff landscape might be with how few actually good teams there are this year, plenty may be in No Mans land.

The Mets keep winning thanks to Grimace from Mcdonalds. Seriously.

Dodgers beat Rockies due to a check swing going the Dodgers way. That and the 3 run home run immediately after but sure, blame the check swing.

Injuries keep piling up for teams. Bo Bichette calf strain. Alex Kirilloff has a back issue. Justin “Bushleague” Verlander has a neck problem. And Aaron Judge got hit in the hand. He didn’t break anything like what happened with Betts. Oh and Torres got hit in the hand too. Jeez these pitchers cannot pitch inside.

BASEBALL IS BACK

Reid Detmers with another encouraging outing at AAA Salt Lake today 7 innings 6 hits 2 ERs 3 Walks and 5 K’s. He did give up the requisite HR though.
Yesterday Sam Bachman also took another step to get back to Overdrive going 4 innings giving up 4 hits 1 ER 1 Walk and 4 Ks in 58 pitches for the Trash Pandas so let’s hope he continues to improve.

Ward and Neto now have identical OPS+s, which says a lot more about Ward than it does Neto.

I still have suspicions that Sano placed a heating pad on Soriano’s abdomen and now it supposed to be infected.

There seems to be a little more than the usual TJS but I’m not a doctor. Something about a UCL brace

They tried the “platelet-rich plasma injection” first…. It would be interesting to hear stats on that success rate.

In other injury news. Unsolved mystery, I guess Soriano has the SHITS….Infected with a stomach virus?

June 18: RHP José Soriano no IL stint is expected
Soriano was scratched from his scheduled start on Monday against the Brewers roughly two and a half hours before first pitch due to lower abdominal pain. On Tuesday, Angels manager Ron Washington said Soriano is dealing with an infection. Soriano threw on Tuesday with discomfort, but Washington and the Angels do not believe this will require a stint on the IL.

But, I do not believe them.

Moniak at .189 and Adell at .187

Who climbs above .200 first? Will either climb above .200?

Luis Rengifo is roughly 30 AB’s short of qualifying but, he’s currently batting .314 – which would put him at #7 in MLB, just behind Shohei Ohtani.

Speaking of Ohtani, his slash line:

.316 / .388 / .608 / .996
20 HR
49 RBI
16-1 SB / CS

Watching MNT fade away in a whimper of injuries & lengthy IR stints is a total bummer.

It’s easy to place blame on Arte, Carpino, Perry, Epler, etc etc …

Unfortunately, none of them are the reason Trout’s health has deteriorated away. Not being able to get 1 full season of peak-Trout and peak-Ohtani together is depressing, utterly depressing.

Can we blame Evil Arte, Crapino and Company for Luis’s recent June Power Swoon? In his last 18 games Geefo’s batting .254 but has only 1 extra base hit ( double) in 72 Plate appearances . Not sure why he cant drive the ball anymore Is Maybe he’s double secret probation injured?

What about Dumb Perry?

I mean, he traded away every future MVP and Cy Young Winner in the system, even though the system sucks and we can’t develop any players because Dumb Perry keeps drafting scrubs ad trading them away.

ESPN is mocking SoCal HS shortstop Ranier to us No. 8 for the MLB draft next month. That’s fun. Would like to see another elite HS prospect in the system after years of drafting these high-floor college guys. https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/40378166/2024-mlb-mock-draft-20-kiley-mcdaniel-predicts-first-two-rounds-top-picks

From MLB: “His easily plus arm that fires mid-90s fastballs from the mound (with a good breaking ball) works from all parts of the infield and if for some reason he had to move to third, he could be a Gold Glove caliber defender there.” Same eval notes his elite exit-velocity. Best high schooler in the draft.

Not sure taking a high school kid at #8 is going to be a popular move with the good people at CTPG.

Hehe. Yeah maybe true… but who around here has a truly informed opinion? If your scouting dept. thinks there’s a choice of a future Corey Seagar on the table or a future Alec Bohm, do you take the Bohm just because he’s in college and might realize his Bohm-ness a couple years earlier?

Roy Hobbs

With the current college programs, I think drafting HS players with high draft picks will become much less common. The risk is just too big. Unless you’re really sure.

With what has become an acceleration to get high draft picks on the big boy roster, I agree. I think HS’ers will no less fall way back to the end of the first or later rounds where the better organization (drafting later) will develop at a normal rate, in no rush to bring them up. Those team just supplement their roster with FA’s and trades.

so Perry has been able to scrounge up enough savings from each years 16-17 draftees signing bonuses to go a $ 1 million over slot for a high school pitcher. With all of our draft picks including the added comp pick we may see 2-3 over slot value high school picks (including even a position player) in this years draft

I would not recommend it. Knowing that these were different regimes Since Mike Trout the list of High school players we took in the first round were:

2010 Kaleb Coward #18
2010 Cam Bedrosian #29
2010 Chevy Clarke #30
2017 Jo Adell #10
2018 Jordyn Adams #17
2019 Will Wilson #15

So that might not be the best strategery for us.

Good catch. He should have stayed in college though.

To be fair I didnt include 1st round comp High School picks :2010 Taylor Lindsay (#37), 2010 Ryan Bolden (#40) even though technically that was still considered the first round back then.

These picks were part of the Eddie Banes big bust draft after hitting it big with high schoolers in 2009.

Not an illustrious group, granted, but… everybody swings and misses on first rounders, especially HS players. Maybe 1 in 6 turns into an impact player? Less after pick 15? And I’m a little weary hearing about how the org is incapable of developing HS talent. Adell was a Top 3 prospect at one point. The Angels didn’t fail him. He might just be a AAAA guy. Marsh was a success. Caden Dana is killing it. Etc.

Cowboy26

Brandon Marsh 2nd Round
Caden Dava 11th Round
Logan O’Hoppe 23rd Round

I’m sure there are many outliers ( Like MNT) but The numbers dont seem to warrant taking a high schooler in the first round.

Screw draft angst. If we aren’t talking about the number 1-3 pick in the draft no one has any idea how it’ll work out. If it is the number 1-3 pick in the draft no one has a clue how it’ll actually work out. If one guy you wanted to draft works out and you think you’re smart you’re forgetting about how impressed you were with Pavin Smith in 2017 amongst dozens of other floppers. Most importantly, you are forgetting you don’t know shit.

Just draft the best guy you can get at the moment and we’ll see what happens. Sure, some guys may seem to be a slightly safer bet (Wake Forest/Arkansas/Tennessee pitchers) but it’s all a craps shoot. I actually follow the draft prospects fairly close and, by the end of round 2 I am lost, if not earlier. Chat board warriors getting all steamy on draft day about guys they didn’t know were alive a few hours earlier is futile piss.

grichmanpoorman

Yes. Even 1-3 is iffy. When CtPG guys start talking about tanking for draft position, it’s like “Yes, bring on Brady Aiken.”

Senator_John_Blutarsky

1-3 is less iffy than 8-10 if for no other reason than having a wider selection of potential.

The issue with the Angels remains the ability to evaluate players.

Given our lack of talent/depth, I don’t mind the “safer” high floor college selections.

Do I want a blue chip star? Sure but, we need solid players in bunches and can’t afford draft misses as the top.

I agree. A lot of the really good HS players play in college now anyway unless they are offered a lot of money. Many current college players are not just high floor guys they are also potential blue chip stars and are much less risky. In the 60+ year history of the club, how many HS blue chip stars have we actually ended up with?

I think we need to really cement Mike’s name in infamy, by contacting Dr. El Attrache, and creating a new knee meniscus replacement surgery that can forever known as Mike Trout surgery. He gets it done, takes another year off to rehab and train, comes back in 2026 as a beast and finishes out his career!
Or ……. maybe not.

It’s a Podcast now. Called the Renzone. It’s about baseball players who get money and then spend years doing fun shit like breaking bones and having joints surgically repaired. Dislocating shit. Doing incredibly pleasurable physical therapy. Totally avoiding crying about it in front of reporters, even though to do so would show Real Baseball Men how angry they are at their bodies. Plus an inside look at all the stuff they do instead of being healthy and playing baseball, like eating and talking to family members and how it all gives us proof that they don’t even care about coming back because they don’t like baseball for realz in their heart meat. Ultra plus, how it all goes back to evilArte…. and the Illuminatti…. and then aliens.
