Angels take weekend opener from Texas

Angels 9 Rangers 3

The not so great news? Lead off hitter Nolan Schanuel was the only angel to not get a hit. His 0 for 6 was a stain on this otherwise solid game. I mean sure, I get leaving Rendon at leadoff until he started hitting – but Schanuel? Tonight he had 3 Ks and 3 batted balls hit under 78 MPH.

It took old friend Andrew Heaney 83 pitches to get through 3 2/3rd innings. He allowed only 3 runs, but was far from the picture of efficiency. The more things stay the same…

On the other side of the mound, Tyler Anderson threw yet another game. He didn’t blow away the radar gun, but he did toss 96 pitches over 7 innings with only 2 hits an a single run (solo homer) allowed. Anderson lowered his season ERA to 2.72 after tonights outing.

The Angels scored their first of many runs on this super messy play. Thanks Rangers!

Zach Neto leg kick home run in the 4th:

Taylor Ward solo shot in the 6th:

Thankfully, Anderson left the game with a strong lead because you all know how the bullpen story goes. Matt Moore gave up a 2 run shot to Marcus Semien but Jo Adell got those 2 runs back with a gapper in the 9th.

Willie Calhoun (4 hits) and Kevin Pillar (2 SB) continue to impress and Luis Rengifo came back hot going 1 for 4 with a double, walk, and a stolen base.

Light up that Halo!

Calhoun has played 8 years, is 29, and never even really even been replacement level. Pillar is 35 and has also never been any good. I’m happy they’re doing well right now and hope they continue but we should trade them as soon as we can get good value for them. Next year will likely be much like this year so we have to start accumulating young players.

Question, would you give good value to a guy who has been let go by 9-teams in less than 5-years? Yes, Plilar is on a nice little streak like Hicks was in the Spring. Now, maybe we trade Ward and give Plillar his spot.

I get your point, and I would not, but If someone offered you value, I would definitely trade them. I would also trade Ward since I believe next year is his last of club control. I would not keep them unless it was cheap because you already have both Moniak and Adell on the cheap and you’re not going to be trying to win. I would definitely consider your suggestion if you could not really get anything for them and they were willing to return for limited money. They’re both good clubhouse guys and fun to watch.

Great game by Anderson. I didn’t think he would right the ship after his horrible first year. It’s nice to see old school pitchers succeed in this environment, where it’s all about the heater, spin rates, etc. A pitcher who gets weak groundballs and flyouts, and lasts 7 innings or more is just as good as a pitcher who Ks 10 or more each game.

The kids are finally gelling. And the scrubs Perry picked are also working, it’s about time the Angels have this kind of luck.

7 games back of 1st

A sweep of Texas coupled with a Baltimore sweep of Seattle would put us on 5 GB.

Fitting that Houston has finally decided to stop spotting games to rest of the division right before we play them.

As I predicted about a month ago, the Astros would be on fire by the time we finally play them …

Yeah he is likely radioactive at this point.

I wonder if he introduced the bookie to Ippei or vice versa

I wondered why Fletch suddenly fell out of favor here. He went from the heart and soul of the team to a guy they found ways to send down and then trade. This story causes speculation as to if the Angels knew.

Speculation: if the Angels knew about Fletcher they’d have known about Ippei and thus had suspicions about Shohei and therefore would have traded 17 last season. That didn’t happen so I figure they didn’t know about any of this

Obviously they didn’t know at the deadline.

There are 6 months between the two events.

Maybe Perry did and wanted to trade him but Arte Poo Pooed it because he was still too addicted to the Ohtani Brand

He passed through waiver multiple times. No one him for the contract he was being paid. The team dumped Fletcher because he sucked after signing the big contract. He was not and is not worth $5m per season.

Yeah, Fletch loves to play poker (Texas Hold em’.). He never should have gotten in on that hand.

Too bad. I always liked Fletch. I’m sure as more info comes out things will turn bad for him pretty quickly. I wonder if the Angels front office knew something and that is why they cut ties with him ? We might ask the same question about Shohei. I mean the fact that Arte was never really in on negotiations is sort of suspicious.

Two very good points Frost.

Maybe Arte isn’t such a dunce after all,

Whatever acumen Arte has clearly was better suited to his billboard advertising business – his track record with the Angels makes it clear it doesn’t translate to running a baseball team.

If in fact the team could be for sale and I think ultimately it will be.

Trading and or not signing bad press players was smart business!

Seems to me Frost is on to something that Arte knew all about it.

Arte: it depends on your metrics used to judge if I’m capable of running a baseball team. I’m not in this to maximize winning percentage or makes friends.

I doubt it Frostie. AA ( The Braves POBO) is one of Perry’s bestest baseball buddies so no way he would burn that relationship if he knew something about this gambling and didn’t disclose it to him before the Fletcher trade.

Plus based upon their recent history we would be giving the Angels management too much credit for actually knowing what is going on with their players and the ball club..

I thought they cut ties with him because he started to suck. The tomahawk chop of a swing did him in along with his health. The Braves and the White Sox agree with this.

I know I’m supposed to be full of bitterness and hate cause Arte but…

Shit man. All but two of the guys playing tonight have OPSs above 700. One of those guys is Shanuel, who I have hope will get better. The other is a guy Drury will replace and hopefully start hitting. Our starters aren’t golden gods, but they all show flashes of being able to be good and if that levels out…. nice.

Sure, Calhoun isn’t really Tony Gwynn. And yes, our bullpen is currently poop. I do still think the FO should trade good players this July and destroy all optimism for August. And yes, a lot would have to go right for good stuff and we won’t be fooled blah blah blah. No. This teams not going be be GOOD. But they aren’t really miles and miles away from being OK. And that’d be a big step up from last year.

Plus, we don’t have to see those Rangers shitty concoct uniforms all the time. Man, those are ass. Poor Rangers fans….

For a ‘let’s play the kids and see how this goes’ I think the season is shaping up fine. Sucks that Trout is down – he really deserves better luck, but the Neto, Schanuel, O’Hoppe, and Adell are all making me positive about the future.

Would also love a former dodgers highly touted prospect to finally find his way with the Angels. A 29yr old late bloomer would be nice.

The one guy you didn’t mention is Arte. If he is part of the picture then it is still sour. However, if he does sell the team and we start fresh with new ownership and that young core, I too would feel positive about the future.

Are there any of the reclamation projects that you would keep Gitcho?

Maybe Calhoun? He is only 29 years old. In the past with Texas he would start the season off hot but then subsequently go cold with the rise in the Texas heat. However, He has finally reached the proverbial 1000 AB’s. His Angel stint of 55 PA’s and a .959 OPS is obviously the best stretch of his career but in his last 105 PA’s with the Yankees last year he slashed a respectable .247/.333/.473 .

Now he is strictly a DH, only has one more year of club control through 2025, and as a phat guy his skills may diminish faster than others, but , I think hes finally figured it out (like Rengifo) so I wouldn’t trade him unless we got a lot more than a just a Packy Naughton for him.

So we just need to play the AL West every night and we will win every game!

O/T trout has been showing up at my sons little league park. Be pretty cool if he decides to let his son play there. I haven’t been there when he’s there but sounds like he gets swarmed while he’s there. Famous problems and all

Ha ha.It is ONE game, lol. I think we should pump the breaks a little bit on the “AL West” dominance idea… we could easily lose the next 4 or 5 straight with the Astros following this series ..

I belive the Dodgers found out that Rengifo isn’t a good guy.

We didn’t know which minor leaguers the dodgers wanted, plus Joc and Ross sucked the rest for the year. Pages would have washed out with lack of developing in our minor league system.

What I find hysterical is fans got the large butthurt over a guy who was CLEARLY on the decline and had been given a contract that no sane owner would have given.

Then, after he NEVER DEMANDED a trade here and would have been happy in Toronto collecting his check, the fans in Anaheim act like he pulled a gun and forced Arte to trade for him.

Add in “too blessed to be stressed” which is the opposite of GRIT! FIRE! and many heads exploded.
