We got Reid Detmers tonight. So how did he do? He was dealing!
Here is the Angels fielding alignment.
Inning #1
Reid Detmers struck out the side in the first inning. Anthony Rendon started the Angels offense with a single. He tried to steal second but was called out. Schanuel bounced out to first. Mike Trout walked but Taylor Ward struck out to end the inning.
Inning #2
Tyler O’Neill walked but Detmers struck out the other three Red Sox players who stepped up in the second inning. Hicks struck out but O’Hoppe reached on an infield hit off the glove of the shortstop Reyes. Luis Rengifo lined out to right. Mickey Moniak walked but Zach Neto grounded to short for a force out to end the inning.
Inning #3
Connor Wong doubled and then reached third on an Emmanuel Valdez ground out. Jarren Duran singled to drive in Wong. 1-0 Boston. Duran got himself picked off to make it two outs. Pablo Reyes struck out.
It took ten pitches, but Anthony Rendon struck out looking. Nolan Schanuel lined out to first. Mike Trout struck out. Hey! That rhymes.
Inning #4
Rafael Devers singled. Tyler O’Neill struck out looking. Bobby Dalbec grounded out and drove Devers to second base but Triston Casas then struck out to bring the Angels up. Taylor Ward drew a walk. Aaron Hicks popped out to first. Logan O’Hoppe flied out to right. Luis Rengifo singled to center driving Ward over to second. Mickey Moniak battled, but ended grounding out to end the inning.
Inning #5
Three up, three down for the Red Sox. Zach Neto singled through the left side to start things off for the Angels. Anthony Rendon lined out to center and then Zach Neto stole second while Schanuel batted. He was originally called out but the Angels won a challenge for the time being. Maybe New York based MLB will re-overturn that call six days from now. Who knows?
Nolan Schanuel walked. Greg Weissert came in to replace Garrett Whitlock facing Mike Trout who lined out to left. Taylor Ward flied out to right. Oh well.
Inning #6
It was three up, three down for Boston again. Mostly it was strikeouts. Aaron Hicks then struck out. Logan O’Hoppe popped out. Luis Rengifo singled to bring up Mickey Moniak. Rengifo had been apparently caught stealing, but the Angels won another challenge at second base to keep the inning alive.
Mickey Moniak walked to bring up Zach Neto. Isaiah Campbell came in to pitch for Greg Weissert and Zach Neto proceeded to single and load the bases for Anthony Rendon. Stop the presses! Anthony Rendon reached on a fielding error by Rafael Devers. Rengifo and Moniak both scored. 2-1 Angels.
Nolan Schanuel got a four pitch walk. Mike Trout then flied out to left field.
Inning #7
Now Adam Cimber came in to pitch. He got Tyler O’Neill out but then he hit Masataka Yoshida with a pitch. He struck out Triston Casas and Wilyer Abreu hit a fly ball out to Mike Trout. Justin Slaten now came in to pitch for Boston. He struck out the side.
Inning #8
Matt Moore came in to pitch for Adam Cimber. Moore retired Boston on three fly balls. The Angels Also went three up three down.
Inning #9
Carlos Estevez came in to pitch and Pinch hitter Reese McGuire struck out. Raphael Devers flied out to left. Tyler O’Neill popped out to third base. The Angels won 2-1!
If you all are not watching the women’s NCAA women’s basketball championship you are missing something incredible. Absolutely fantastic basketball. I think this game is better than any of the games I’ve seen on the men’s side.
This video shows a kid with Trout’s 473′ HR ball…it didn’t go out of the ballpark.

“Among the 69 pitchers who’ve thrown at least 10 innings this season, Reid Detmers ranks:
1st in strikeout rate (45.2%)
1st in whiff rate (41.8%)
2nd in strikeouts (19)
2nd in whiffs (38)
2nd in FIP (1.11)”

Next benchmark is getting deeper into games (7+ innings)on a consistent basis, but he’s been REALLY good thus far.
Oops…wrong video!!! Plus an answer about challenging the change.

MLB denied the Angels’ petition to have the ruling reversed, according to Sam Blum of The Athletic. The team apparently went to great lengths to try to convince the league to restore Schanuel’s streak, to no avail.
“Disappointing, but time to move on,” Schanuel told Brandon Deutsch of the Sporting Tribune about the decision. “Got bigger goals, focusing on winning more games.”
Man, Boston is a lot better than I thought, especially after letting Sale and Turner go and signing washed up Giolito. Pitching is unbelievable, or is it your guys just can’t hit? Drury, Moniak and Schanuel are ice cold. Everyone struggling with runners in scoring position. Hope boys can turn it around cause the starting pitching can’t carry us, especially with Rays and Orioles right around the corner.
I think it’s both, but will gladly take a win.

Refreshing to hear Randazzo on the live game feed unload on MLB regarding Schanuel’s streak. One thing to say it during a pregame show but live feeds can be heard from many different outlets. Just so Angel-like to toe the line and not confront something unappealing. Likely some Manfraud blowback coming but my approval rating for Wayne went upper tier.. Go Halos.
Such a travesty.
Can the Angels challenge the change?

Soooooo, Reid Detmers is looking pretty ace-like and Rengifo needs to start
🥳🥳🥳😇😇😇
The long at bats which tire the starter and get him out of there by the 4th really help. So don’t totally criticize those guys even if they aren’t hitting great right now. Two of those guys are Schanuel and Rendon.
Other guys that lunge at the first pitch and make an out are the opposite. The one Hicks at bat when he swung at the first pitch and fouled out was lousy. There are others too.
Let’s hope for another good performance today.
Screw you Orioles for appealing for that scoring change!!! What else was the goal except to spite the kid and end his streak?! You won that game 13-4!!! And you’d seriously rather have your fielders have an error in their stats rather than none!!!!
I hope Schanuel keeps getting on base each game to show how ridiculous that change was. And I hope Henderson and Rutschman suck balls for the rest of the year and they don’t make the playoffs and they’re back to being basement dwellers in the east.
Great game by Reid! Hopefully this is the year he truly becomes an ace.
Amazing summary Charles, really well done to capture the game in such a condensed format. Wins like these are the difference between good teams and bad. Keep it going Angels!!
Thanks. I was worried I was being kind of dry and telegraphic.
Early season reviews of our minor leagues, not good top to bottom, inside and out, not much hitting or pitching.

We really could use the help down the road with HS kids being drafted.
Knowing Perry , Our down-the-road Help is probably midway through their Spring Semesters right now.
Looks like a possible low scoring game again tomorrow. Rengifo is earning more PT.
Physical therapy?
Every game for us is low scoring right now 😉
Chowd tears feed the grass
Devers wide eyed and clumsy
Red Sox eat the poop
(diiiiiiinnnnggggggg……)
Last year they would have ate the Poup so I think we’re making progress
These wins in 2-1 games are huge for the team.
Totally agree steelgolf.
This kind of game builds character much more than a 10-2 win does. In fact, this was the Angels’ first one run game of the year, and of course their first victory in a nail-biter.
Good to win it !
Amen Amen lez do it again!
Errorless baseball, made Red Sox pitchers run deep in their counts, able to squeeze this game out. Game ball, Detmers.
Even when the end result is an out I am loving the “well, I’ll foul off a couple and take the count full before you get me” approach they are all taking.
Just another Angels Win.
Tim Salmon has a lot of excellent observations, hopefully the Angels are listening.
Great win. Phenomenal performance by Detmers.
Getting W’s when not doing much at the plate is always a bonus.
Yep, another 6 hit win.
2 of 3. Win the series tomorrow. F the Sox’s.
Great game by Detmers. Had to get lucky otherwise but Detmers allowed that luck to happen. He looked like an Ace tonight.
And fortunately, the bullpen has pitched well on the nights that we have gotten good starts.
Yeah, you could say this was a cheap win for us, (due to the Devers’ error scoring all of our runs) but you have to take em any way you can get them. Really important game tonight to stay above .500 and keep pace in the West.
It actually wasn’t that cheap. The team had to execute a lot of small things really well to keep the pressure on, take advantage of one screw up, then hold a lead. It’s exactly the opposite of the “one bad inning” style of loss they have been so good at in recent years.
