LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Cactus Time

Morning Angels fans. Have some links.

Angels News

The Angels won yesterday, and are 2-2 in the Cactus League this far. They will need to play better to keep their crown this year, however, as there is stiff competition this Spring Training. Might be the best chance for the Angels to win anything this year really…

Hunter Dozier is wearing Number 17 now. And he is having fun with it. Big shoes to fill, err, jersey.

There are some SP still unsigned. While Snell and Montgomery are the big $$$, what about brining back Lorenzen? MLB Trade rumors thinks it would be a good fit.

Around Baseball

Utah legislators went all Anaheim committee and made it so that any Utah MLB team must have Utah in the name. No SLC Bees, it must be Utah Bees. That is if they actually get a team, which, if the current headache around the A’s shows, is not likely to be any time soon.

Speaking of stupid stadium situations, the White Sox are looking to have a new one maybe for some reason and the Illinois governor is telling the multi billion dollar owner to shove it. A new stadium would “require” 1.7 Billion US dollars in public money.

T-Mobile customers get free MLB.TV again. Cannot watch local still, so, YMMV on if it is useful at all.

Apparently, the Royals somehow are the only team with good uniforms this year. Once again, they are ruining baseball.

Wander Franco has his bank accounts frozen. Oh and he didn’t pay his lawyers. Yeah, how is he escaping jail again?

Julio Teheran is still pitching somehow. He is now with Baltimore on a MiLB deal.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

CtPG guy. So angry about everything. Angry about Trout having another kid. Angry about all the Angels players over the years who get hurt on purpose so they can collect money for sitting around. Angry about the new t-shirts in the store. Angry about in game decisions made. Angry about in game decisions not made. Angry about old manager. Angry about new manager. Angry about City Connect unifroms. Angry we didn’t keep Joe Maddon. Angry we had Joe Maddon. Angry we didn’t keep Joe again. Angry about Spring Training facilities. Angry that a guy we never heard of is starting in February over another guy he never heard of. Angry about beer. Angry that cheap Arte won’t spend. Angry when cheap Arte spends. Angry that we won’t commit to a rebuild by signing Blake Snell. Angry that, shockingly, the team has brought in a bunch of flyer players to spring camp…. but would have been angry if we hadn’t. Angry that our players aren’t angry, but really angry if a player gets angry. Angry that there aren’t enough uniform numbers retired, but would also be angry that too many uniform numbers are retired and would likely call it a desperate money grab for jersey sales….

And yet, Shohei leaves for the hated team to the north and…. CtPG guy is a fucking Pomeranian for the guy.

I’m seriously afraid the Angels won’t reach the promised land of the World Series again till the bones of every CtPG guy have been left in the desert….

Fan JuJu. It’s a thing people.

I know this is from a few days ago but love this throw from Hicks to get the runner out at home:

That was smoking hot. Ball was in the catcher’s glove when the runner was just passing the chalk circle around the plate. BOOM!

I was listening on the radio while driving that day and only saw the replays later.

This throw alone made me follow his career thru the A’s to the Mets.

Amazing play.

MLB.TV is great for the office. Most midweek days I can have a game I don’t really care about on in the background.

Maybe it is all those years of listening to baseball on the radio while driving tractors but life just seems calmer with a game on.

I still love the radio and often wish I could more easily choose that audio option while watching. I think they do a better job of having a like-you’re-there approach and don’t get side tracked with mindless filler talk. I also find it hilarious when the radio station cuts to a commercial break promoting getting your tickets for upcoming games after giving up 5+ runs in an inning. They’d be better suited to just play those same promos after a Halo Blitz. There have been very few games with audio issues and you can only hear the crowd noise/vendors and I always appreciate those as well. Don’t get me wrong, still like the TV announcers… just nice to mix it up.

I would like to hear it about 30 to 40 times and see Trout hit for a higher average, OBP and more stolen bases with less strike outs.

This team is infinitely more enjoyable with Wash at the helm. Everytime I watch one of his interviews it puts a smile on my face.

This is a 75-80 win team as currently constructed, with room to overachieve. Gimme Snell and it gets spicy.

Sano needs to do something soon before I shift my attention to Livan Soto for that final bench spot.

Guillermo Zuñiga is my new bullpen crush.

Reply to  Fansince1971

Well, I’ve been saying 75-80 wins for a few months, nothing changes there.

Sano doesn’t have the luxury to have a poor ST, and Soto can play 2B, SS, 3B. Pretty self explanatory.

Zuniga throws an easy 100mph. I like him.

I held all of these opinions prior to ST lol.

MarineLayer

Sano can provide some power at 3B and 1B, which Soto can’t. To me, if Sano hits, then I’d like him to stay up and have a beauty contest between Soto and Stefanic. The problem with that is that Sano probably isn’t much of a fielder at 3B.

My understanding is that he’s terrible in the field and if that’s true, he needs to absolutely MASH to justify the roster spot IMO.

I’d prefer to let Trout and others rotate the DH at bats.

Zuniga looked super yesterday, and Soto is the Fletcher enigma without the great leather. I hope for Soto making the team over Sano. As far as predicting the W/L record, you sure are not taking history into account in regard to injuries. Indian ghosts roam the causeways and tunnels looking for the weak spots 👻 😄

When he’s on Zuniga looks unhittable. Control and consistency are apparently his downfall so we’ll see how he progresses.

I was happy when we got him and so far he’s put a smile on my face.

but….but….Sano lost approximately 600 pounds since he was last in the majors, and he’s in the proverbial best shape of his life *

I think Sano’s bat won’t be productive enough to justify his roster position as a DH only.

I’d prefer to let our regulars rotate thru the DH spot.

It’s one thing to have a dedicated masher like Shohei or JD Martinez, it’s an entirely different matter to have a guy who isn’t position flexible with a mediocre bat as a full-time DH.

No argument here. I was/still am all in on the Sano redemption story, but he’s gotta show serious ability in ST.

Soto’s glove is beyond valuable to our bench.

Neto 2 for 3 with a 2b + 3b with 3 RBI, Soto with 3 Hits (Isn’t he the SS nobody wanted? 😄 ) Just about everyone got into the game except maybe Rendone. Ward had a 2b and run scored too with Trouty and Thaiss scoring a run each. Spring baseball is fun-it sure beats shoveling snow.

I really don’t think Shohei will ever be the same pitcher again after 2 TJS, but his hitting may improve in that deadly first 4 lineup. I would like to believe that should Shohei make Cooperstown that an Angels hat would be worn. 🏆

We all know that it’s inevitable tradition and science that Ohtani will be the NL MVP, Cy Young award winner, Silver Slugger, Gold Glove, Clemente Award, Aaron Award, Outstanding DH Award, Comeback Player Award (also known as the Kim Kardashian Award), Reliever of the Year, NLCS MVP, WS MVP, Players Choice Award, Heart & Hustle Award, All-Star Game MVP, Presidential Medal of Freedom, Pulitzer Prize, Grammy, Oscar, People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive (2024-2033), Nobel Peace Award winner, and the American Kennel Club Humane Fund Awards For Canine Excellence (ACE) multiple times while wearing Dodger blue.

He’ll also be the first player ever to go into the Baseball Hall of Fame wearing a cap backwards.

Exactly. That number belongs to Angel great and World Series hero Erstad. That ‘other guy’ will be cementing his greatness as a Dodger, and that organization will do everything it can to ensure his legacy is stamped in 17 blue.

Correction – “cementing his greatness as a Dodger, and that organization, MLB, Rob Manfred and his successor will do everything they can to ensure his legacy is stamped in 17 blue.

In the end, there will be a faint whisper of “Did he really play for the Angels?” Only the Angels faithful will have memories of those days….and even they will question if any of that was real.

I agree with you, I think all three should have their numbers retired, having them retired at the same time would be awesome.

I think Bostock because he seemed the perfect role model someone who was willing to say he did not earn his paycheck so was willing to give it to charity, he also played baseball at Cal State Northridge, I saw him play there in my younger years.

A good player played for us for a few years and leaves as soon as he’s an FA and we need to retire his jersey the winter after he bails or our owner is an asshole.

Makes total sense.

Wouldn’t it have been kind of pathetic if we retired that number right now? Do other teams do that? Giambi to the Yankees…. A’s retire his number that January?

Maybe, when Shohei retires, we can also have a Shohei day and give him a surf board?
