LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Arbitrations

The arbitrations are now underway. Taylor Ward and Jose Suarez are the two Angels who couldn’t agree with the team by the deadline. Two other Angels made this list of the Worst Contracts Heading Into 2024. The Angels have a deal with outfielder Aaron Hicks for which they will only have to pay prorated League minimum. Here is Jeff Joiner’s article on the deal. Kolton Ingram was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. The Cardinals claimed Alfonso Rivas off waivers from the Angels.

The Tigers designated right-hander Devin Sweet for assignment to make room on their 40 man roster for Colt Keith. The Orioles and Danny Coulombe came to an agreement avoiding arbitration.

Here is a video montage of Yu Darvish and Justin Verlander being rather uncoordinated. Yasiel Puig was involved in a major baseball brawl down in the Venezuela League.

Former Blue Jays Manager Jimy Williams passed away.

I think everyone needs to hold on to their pants a bit. There’s no way Ron Washington has already promised Aaron Hicks an everyday role. If we’re to believe anything he’s said about people earning their role then why would Hicks, of all people, already be guaranteed time? I don’t buy that Wash has buried Jo Adell yet. In fact it’d be weird for a guy that just went through the MLB youth thing to speak to just bench Adell. Hicks is just the Ward insurance. I mean who knows if Ward’s head is even right. Like literally. Besides didnt Trent Rush who is the state run media just have Adell on his fake podcast?

Plus we dont know if Jo will ever learn to hit the off speed shitso it would be good to have a legit backup plan. I’m sure Hicks likes home cooking while he collects his $10 million so if he has to sit around little bit until opportunity presents itself ( and it will)

Its a looooong season . if you don’t believe me just ask Rendone.

None of our OF’s is a sure thing: everyone has some issues (Ward, the effects of the beaning; Trout, durability; Adell, development and defense issues) and could use a quality backup. Besides, Hicks is not exactly a reliable piece either–who knows how much of this season he’ll stay in one piece? Depth is a good thing in general, I think.

But it will probably up the valuation of the Ångels if/when he does sell:

I doubt it. If the selling price is indeed $1.75 Billion, that’s a far cry from the rumored $3+ Billion offer amounts Arte allegedly received last year

I think Arte should be a contestant on Shark Tank, to sell off part of the Angels. It would be fun.

They could ask him
“So, do you have a 3rd baseman?” Um, well, kind of.
“Do you have a plan?” To sell tickets!
“Do you have a farm system?” Well, did I mention we have a sundae in a helmet?

So it’s a lot like last year with no real everyday 2B or 3B, at least this year they have an actual SS, but a number of players who can play multiple positions sort of okay. It works for this year but then every year your starting over. No long term plan.

Drury is a solid second baseman. Not great with the glove but solid offensively.

Schanuel passed the limited eye test at first.

Rendon will get hurt taking team photos.

I’m fine with Drury at 2B, in fact, I would prefer they extend him to provide stability and they can still always trade him. If they had the same coaching staff as last year, I would have no hope, but with the new crew, I’m interested in seeing if they make a difference. I’m certainly hoping for a good year from Trout and growth in the younger players but I am fairly confident this year will end up much like the last few. It will be entertaining and fun to watch how it happens, and in the end it should confirm whether we are not very good or that we can be good with a few of the right additions. We should find out a lot this year and be able to go into next year without all the unknowns. I’m looking forward to what we find out so it will be interesting regardless of how it goes. I do think our pitching will be better than expected.

I’d bet he plays more days than not IF he’s healthy. That’s definitely a capital IF.

Trout likely gets 2 days per week at DH.
Moniak can’t hit lefties so there’s another game or so each week.
Ward could use a day off or at DH here and there.

Add in a few DH and PH appearances and he’s in the lineup pretty much every day.

I’m not sure this is good or bad.

I do figure that almost guarantees we are out on Bellinger (and Granderson too).

We already have 5 outfielders, and 3 OF positions and DH. Trout and Hicks “supposedly” will play almost every day. Unless we’re going to trade away OFs, we’re set with the roster.

We need someone to be a better fit at 3B. The bench is likely Hicks (or one of the other OF), Thaiss (or a different backup C), Rengifo and Stefanic – as is. We can replace the Plumber with a more versatile player that could field 3B and 1B (potentially) better than Drury/Rengifo can.

I still think Urshela is preferable to Anderson – just for this point. 3B is the one spot (league wide?) with the fewest possibilities out there.

Unless the Angels really feel that Sano, Dozier or Leblanc will make the team out of spring training?

All of Perry’s moves this offseason (other than Stephenson) have been on the cheap creating organizational depth while waiting for a bigger move when the ice finally breaks. Not sure that will ever happen for this team. So this maybe all there is.

Still doesn’t bode well for soon to be MVP Jo Adell. Hicks may have very well have been told what he said because they ultimately have trade ideas, and not just Adell, could be Ward. But of course the expectation was not to blab it to everyone publicly. He was very clear about what he said the first time and the damage control came out through the team.

Hicks is such a whatever signing.

The club is obviously expecting Adell-Moniak-Ward to earn the AB’s in opinion. Hicks is low level liability insurance. Moreover, if these three can’t beat out washed Hicks, it means they suck. Frankly.

We’re getting close to baseball activities….

I suspect that we’ll sign 2 more players at most:

SP – Either Clevinger or Lorenzen (With Urias being a distant possibility)

IF – Urshella or Tim Anderson (The lack of depth at SS is alarming)

Identifying possible acquisitions is the easy part. Reconciling that with the 40-Man is an entirely different matter.

Donovan Solano can cover third and first and provides league average offense.

I still think Anderson on a one year deal is what will happen.

The problem then is Drury is bad at first. Maybe he DH’s more.

Wow. I know its accuracy has sometimes been called into question, but, if you plug in yesterday’s big Polanco trade in the Trade simulator, this was a huge win for Minnesota (Over 2 times more value than what they gave up). And thats even before considering the $8 Million the JeDi included in the deal.

DeSclafini came over to the Mariners in Robbie Ray deal which now looks like a massive overpay by the Mariners in year one. The net result is they end up jettisoning Ray but acquire up with Polanco for one year and Haniger for 2 years while shelling out an additional $11 million in 2024 (over and above the $23 million they’re paying Ray to Rehab) . The savings actually come to them in 2025 & 2026. Where they potentially save a combined $34 million if they dont pick up Polanco’s 2025 option.

Trader Jerry. My first reaction was a good move for the Twins to dump Polanco and get some potential upside back. DeSclfani immediately fills a SP need. But time will tell how bad of a trade this was for JeDi. He needed some offense but has gone about it in a weird way. My guess is that they decline the option after Polanco puts up a 1.5 WAR. JeDi’s grandfather was on the Titanic in charge of deck chair arrangement. Must be hereditary.

We have NRIs like Sano , LeBlanc and Dozier that could fill the last bench spot . Anderson is still out there ( as well as Gio) and could be another option . Another long shot is We could also sign Gary Sanchez carry 3 catchers but have LHH Thaiss and Sanchez take at bats at other positions including DH

Considering that right now Rengifo is our primary back up shortstop I would think the lady bench spot would go to someone who can take over when Neto has an ouchie or needs a blow .

Angels do need a 3rd baseman, that has to be the mindset at this point. Sano reportedly is looking great in winter ball. Or, down to Gio, Longo, and Anderson for me. Hernandez and Solano feel so Rengifo to me. I say avoid Moose and Donaldson.

I have not seen any smoke but one guy I like in the case of an ouchie, for 1-year, Brandon Crawford. Still can play excellent SS and he is willing now to move off of SS and has the gun to play 3rd.

Another gold star member (they are popular/effective in my house right now for positive reinforcement and I am in no way trying to be dick or use /s)

Appreciate the feedback. They aren’t allowed on game threads for those very reasons. I will not reply to anything you post with a GIF/meme.

Online jokes are super odd, right? Written or otherwise.
There are a bunch of frequent users here, there are many inside online jokes (shamwow=schanuel, I guess).

It would be great to hear more from you, someone of few posts (with the hopes more people join and people who don’t post as much, post more often). Theres never been a CtPG meet up, I’ve tried and tried to financially support it.

Not sure what else to say but your post is not lost on me. I try to contribute positively to the site.

I appreciate you taking the feedback even if you are doing it in sarcasm.

I’ve been around for 3 iterations of this site and posted more frequently to the previous versions but have found that the doomer/”realist”/pessimistic fans floating around here have taken most of the fun out of participating in conversations if there is even the slightest hint of not hating the same as them.

I am not being sarcastic in the slightest. I’ve been around same as you, espn message board, HH and here. Isn’t that funny, our first instinct here now is that someone is using snark/sarcasm.
I’ve inserted the names I’ve been called (and yet we have a ‘rule’ against that). The only one I haven’t been called in the last few months is 2002heaven (I guess they’ve figure out I don’t have secondary/ghost account like some actually do here) but that was a favorite of the ‘club’. Instead of complaining to Jeff, Jessica, Charles (they literally have it hard enough to run to this place/create content)… I’ve just decided to handle my own in whatever way (or the text group messages I’m in, they don’t want to join fyi, where I share a link to this place occasionally) is fitting. Hoping to hear more from you, gold star status in my book!

Yeah, 2021 is too distant. Probably right. The only bible I have is the Beers of the World.

Now thats one heck of a Bible.

I would think the Angels are also grooming Paris for a second base or utility role if not this season definitely for 2025. His defensive numbers are good and, despite his initial call up struggles last year after skipping AAA, he still held his own in AA last year at the age of 21 Slashing .255/.393/.417 in 514 PAs while stealing 44 bases in only 49 attempts. Maybe the new coaching staff will take him under their wing in ST. Kyren has a ways to go, but he may end up being the best position player Billy ever drafted.

Brandon Marsh was outstanding last year with a 127 OPS+. He would have been the 3RD best player on the team. The question is would he have performed like that on the Angels with their coaching staff. A very sad commentary. Hopefully, Perry has finally hired a decent staff.

A bit of a bummer to me. He is up there in age but on a 1-yr I thought it was still a good move. Bat, leader, winner…could play 1st if needed. I think he wanted to sign where he could win.

Urshela? We need someone to play 3B if (when?) Rendon needs a break (or breaks something).

San Francisco 49’ers are opening up in Vegas at -1. This will go off at even when all is said and done, and I can’t wait for the big day. Football-commercials-food-family-friends- can’t wait to clean up, not the mess-but my winning team choice, I know who will win. Yep, I got it going, all featured out really. Put your red on as the team that wears red at home games will win. 😃

Seasoned degenerates have figured out to bet on the team with a better QB, who is the underdog at the moment?!? Vegas knows what they’re doing/how to get people to bite. I lived through this 4 years ago. Hoping for different results but like you said it’s about the experience.

I see Bellinger is looking for 8 years at a bargain deal of 299 million dollars. That has crash and burn all over it now does it not. Comeback for the Bellringer they say, but he missed 30+ games do to what, a hang nail?

From the Ohtani files-tickets to his opening day start at DH are going for $1,100+ in Korea. Yikes!

I think we’re all in agreement that all long term contracts all basically just a train wreck that you hope happens in the last or second to last year, but usually occur much sooner.

The price for Hicks is terrific. Hard to argue with that. Looks like Turner is going to Toronto. Is Perry saving his money for a big splash at SP or just saving his money? The Halos need at least another veteran bat. Preferably someone that can play IF at this juncture for about 40-50 games (which includes 1B).

Yes, I agree that overpaying isn’t fun or good business. Of course, it’s Boros and Arte. The deal has to be inflated, doesn’t it?

The days of these huge player contracts are not over, but the paying out 35-45 million a year even if prorated is really starting to look stupid and while I thought we looked really in bad shape the Nationals look a lot worse.

What has been proven certainly is that starting pitchers over 30 getting 30 mil + are just not worth the money, lone exception being Cole in NY.

If the Mets on one coast and the Giants on the other coast passed or Correa, it only makes sense that the Twins in the middle went to the big numbers for him. Geographical humor there Doc, oh brother, smh.

Aaron Hicks deal reminds me of an old saying we have all heard-Throw enough shit against the wall and some will stick.

So, if Trout comes up hurtin’ in ’24 we still have Moniak for CF, Taylor Ward for LF, and Adell for RF. And if anyone needs a day off, you know one of those scheduled days off deals we have Rengifo to do a game or. If Tony Two Sacks of sh.. can’t play then there is Renny to play third. Yikes should any other OFer gets hurt or comes up short with the bat.

I thought Strasburg didn’t play (he doesn’t), but is still under contract… which is why he beat out our very own #6 and MNT.

MLB players, like kids and everyone else who walks God’s green earth, have long memories (Darvish reference for those that don’t click links above).

One of the Hicks articles says ‘unpopular ex-Yankees player signs…’ which made me think it would be really cool to be the team (not the As but in reference only) where players wanted to come ‘just’ play baseball. And we would be in a spot to offer them big bucks if they earned it. Would be a complete 180 to signing FAs where their best years happened elsewhere, or letting talent go out the door to see better days. Like Goldilocks, hopiuming that we can find that juuuuust right mix.

Don’t forget friends, choose your own adventure. It all started out with a GIF, how did it end up like this 🙂
