LA Angeles Wednesday News Crash: Snell ya later?

Good morning Angels fans. Have some links.

Angels News

Finished your Christmas shopping yet? Christmas is Monday. Perry seems to still have no idea what to get Arte, with the latest look at his wish list being Blake Snell? We need length, innings! Not the most notorious 5 inning man in baseball!

Now Stroman makes more sense. Don’t know if I would get him, but, well, uh, maybe Arte won’t like this one after all…

Well, We still have a budget left and still haven’t chosen a SP. Kinda look bad compared to the other teams…

Around Baseball

Jeter Downs was claimed by the MFY. Seriously, why did the Nats let that happen, now he will finally be fixed!

Baltimore will keep their orange birds for another 30 years, as Camden Yards get their lease renewed. But changes will be made, as they are looking to mess with the upper deck seats.

Ketel Marte apparently participates in Cock Fighting in the DR. Look, even if it is legal there, WHY POST IT?!

The top 12 for the WBSC is shaping up. Premiere 12 Tournament is in a Year (NOV 2024) so, getting in the Top 12 is going to be competitive.

Pirates get Martin Perez. Oh and Mccutchen is back with them as well. How are the Pirates outcompeting us?!

There isn’t much else besides speculation on Yamamoto, so, how about a game? Can you guess who these Top 7 Centerfielders are in the last 40 years by FWAR?

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

And this is why the Angels are the Angels and not a winner.

For the same guy the Angels traded for two months of Eduardo Escobar the Mets got cost controlled fifth starter and a rotational outfield piece.

Houser fits the ground ball pitcher profile and Taylor can cover all three outfield spots, which is critical when Ward is coming off serious injury and Trout keeps getting hurt.

Add a guy like Houser, keep Silseth in AAA as depth, maybe sign an guy like Snell and flip Sandy or Canning for another useful piece.

Nah, we’ll just hang tight and sign JD Martinez.

It is worse!

Not really the “same guy” even… when we traded him, he was fine.

But when the Mets traded him and got what they got, Crow had just had TJS in August!

I understand and agree with the point, especially as it relates to Perry. However this trade was a salary dump by the Brewers – saves them $7.3M in 2024. It’s gravy if Crow amounts to anything in 2025.

The Mets made this deal even though they are at the competitive tax threshold for 2024. We could have got the same “gift” from the Brewers if ownership was willing to take on the salary. However we shed salary (and 1st round picks).

I don’t get this gripe
Angels needed a piece to fill in after Urshela went down and it cost them a pitcher that hadn’t thrown a pitch since April 26 2023 due to elbow inflammation and likely headed to surgery.

I think at the time it was known that Cohen was eating all the Mets salaries to get anything useful in return.

Had the Angels been willing to take back all of Escobar’s salary, they could have kept Crow. They decided a few million wasn’t worth a prospect…which should tell you all you need to know about any “rebuild” fantasies around here.

It was reports at the time that Cohen was intentional eating cash to get parts back into their system and perhaps there was no trade without the pitchers being included but Perry was able to get the Mets to cover all of Escobars salary.

Remember when Perry was carrying on to the press about all the alternative and back up plans they had like A, B, C etc. Apparently Shohei must have been included in every one of them because they seem unable to move forward at this point. I wouldn’t be shocked if Artie told Perry to get someone who can sell tickets no matter who you trade except for Trout. Perhaps Perry has been unsuccessfully working trades. I can’t believe Artie want’s to go into the season with the team as constructed.

Indeed…
A lot of people are really piling it on Perry and Arte on this site because they haven’t done anything yet this offseason, but then hardly any team has, except for a couple of big moves and a few minor ones.
People can have whatever opinion of the two of them for lots of other reasons… but I wouldn’t include the lack of movement this offseason as one of them.
If we get to March and all the free agents are signed and we still haven’t done anything, then that’s the time to react.

The Snell rumor thing is just absurd. 1. He rejected a QO which would mean for the 3rd straight year, Perry gives up a compensation draft pick. Having a dead last farm system would make signing Snell a head shaker. 2. Angels are not over taking Seattle-Astros-Rangers with this roster so why even go there. 3. Why would a guy like Snell even choose the Angels which would force an overpay, no thanks. 4. Snell’s age and ability to stay in the game and throw innings.

  1. the Angels have a comp pick themselves, so the sting is less
  2. what have the other 3 teams done? Rangers wont have Degrom or Scherzer for most of the year. Seattle has no offense and are cutting payroll. Astros are still solid, but that core is getting older
  3. he wants to play on the West coast. It’s basically us or the Giants.
  4. I don’t disagree with this one

I have retorts to all but I’ll focus on No.2. True, thus far those teams have not made major moves this offseason but all of them have better run organizations and superior farms to which to maneuver from. Seattle might drift back a bit but not likely to end sub.500 with that pitching staff.

Astros are on the verge of becoming Angels. Owner is involved with day to day personal moves and have the 30 ranked farm system.

Jim Crane is even bigger asshole than Arte ( if thats even possible) His companies have been engaged in a rash of EE violations and Federal contract price gouging among other stuff. But Bud and the boys were so excited to get his money that let him into the club with no questions asked.

When he bought the Astros he had massive layoffs including ticket office and other non baseball employees that had been there for years. Not Luhnow is a victim but I’m convinced he has encouraged the culture of cheating and disrespect including misogyny against female reporters that has permeated that franchise since his purchase. Howhe has been able to somehow avoid any blame or responsibility is beyond me.

Do you make the playoffs by signing Snell? NO

Do you shorten the amount of time before you become relevant again? NO

Does his signing help build your woeful farm system? No, it detracts from that effort

Will Arte sell a few more tickets to a hopium addicted myoptic fanbase? Probably

What is the only logical assumption based on this criteria?

Rough neighborhoods while growing up resulted in me being jaded. When everyone around you is seemingly lying you don’t look at what they say. You instead look at their motivations and what they actually do.

IMHO this move would be another in a long series of window dressing moves to appease a fanbase without significantly increasing the odds of a playoff appearance. Signing Snell has way more exposure than it provides in upside. A Rendone type experience is way more likely than a Vlad Guerrero type signing in this case. Snell has all kinds of leverage in this case and whoever gets him will likely overpay in both years and dollars.

They can sign him but does he bring the Angels more in return than your departed MVP in Ohtani who just lead the team to a 73 win season? They are more than a player or two away from relevance.

matthiasstephan

Reply to  PedroCerrano

Well, I didn’t argue that Snell is enough. Just that he helps with pitching (which we need, desperately). He is A piece, but a potentially good one.

But sure, we need more pieces. I do think injuries, plus the end of the year firesale, pushed us more torwards the 73 wins than we would have had in other circumstances. Essentially, I think we are already better than the 2023 record, and Snell helps us improve.

I get it, I don’t know if I’m as hopeful as you but do understand your point. Chase Silseth should be in the rotation to start next season.

He may be special. He may not be special. He’s probably somewhere in between.

1. Detmers
2. Sandy
3. Canning
4. Anderson 🤮
5. Silseth

Punt this season away and let’s focus on development > wins.

I own stock in Silseth, think he could be a no.3 on this list. If a nice swing trade involving Canning pops up, I would recommend to explore before regression sets in. We are stuck with Anderson.

Canning has 2 seasons left under club control. I can be convinced to trade him away, depending on the return package.

FWIW, he is one of my breakout candidates for 2024. I am much higher on Detmers, Sandoval, Silseth and Canning than the consensus.

Sigh, I guess I need to temper my opinion. Marisnick actually apologized for the sign-stealing scandal and he took a retaliation pitch for the Lucroy pitch without complaint, including going so far as sending his own team to back to the dugout.

Good with picking up an OF makes sense, especially after Perry trades Mickey “I know I’m fine” Moniak. But Marisnick? This team really needs speed. A Harrison Bader/Travis Jankowski/Michael Taylor would help there.

Angels need to get more athletic. No more slow white guys…Renfroe, Moose, Drury, Cron, Grichuk types. Perry is lousy at roster building IMO.

I’m not huge on the idea of overpaying for Snell. But I don’t think Stroman is even a comparison. Snell is a legitimate guy that has pitched consistently well during his career and — for the most part been healthy. He just won the Cy and won it before. Stroman is someone that has been hurt a lot, isn’t reliable, and is more of a wildcard. Has he pitched well at times, sure. So had Giolito. Can anyone count on him being an Ace if they bring him in? No. He might be decent, he might be hurt, he might just not pitch well.

The major rub with Snell is he pitched too well last year and thus someone needs to break the bank to get him. I was hoping midyear for just a decent season from him and a lesser contact. Nope.

We will see what happens. Angels aren’t likely to win a bidding war.

Good morning, CtPG posters, I agree that the Angels are slow moving in acquiring some more help but, could this mean that we go with what we got? If so, this is a good thing, watching the system develop players if the system has the players But the system is broken, now what?

Senator_John_Blutarsky
Legend

When it’s fourth and long, the smart move is to punt (i.e. “rebuild”). However, we’ve proven over the years not to be smart. So, the approach likely will be to sign older players looking to rebound and will accept a one-year deal.

Ownership keeps its gold and Perry can declare he’s trying. Wash-rinse-repeat.

AnAngelsFan
Super Member

In the Angels current position, signing veterans to one (or two) year deals would be the best way to start a rebuild, as long as those players are traded to contenders at the deadline.

Trout/Rendon cost too much compared to their projected value to be worth trading and the rest of the team is young enough they can be a part of the rebuild.

With an eye toward ’26, the only trade pieces the Angels have are Drury and Rengifo. They should look to sign veterans that can be traded. It’s a good deal for the veteran too, plenty of playing time to show off your skills followed by a chance to play for a contender.

Precisely. The “youth movement” has already commenced. At least half of our likely starters this season will be comprised of “kids”.

Any FA signings, wether big ticket or one year rentals, will be to round out the roster.

Snell averaged 5 2/3 innings per game over the entire last season, and down the stretch (August/September) only had one start with 5 innings, with all the rest at 6 or 7.

Even last season he averaged more than 5.

That doesn’t mean we should sign Snell, but that is a bit of a poor reputation for him.

I agree. I’ve watched Snell pitch a lot, as I’ve been enamored by his stuff. I think he goes too deep because he actually has good command. What? He picks around too much and uses his “stuff” to get out of jams. The only way I’d personally take him, in my opinion the Angels care nothing about, is if we had serious talks about hitting some bats and trying to go deeper in games.
