LA Angels Monday News Crash: Manager Search

The title of this Rhett Bollinger article suggests it will reveal what the Angels brain trust is looking for in a new manager. Finally in the last couple of sentences it turns out to be “presence, respect, honesty” and some other stuff that remained unspecified. Perry spent a lot of time talking about how desirable the job was. Meanwhile, MLB manager salaries are shrinking drastically.

In here are some details about a trade deadline offer the Rays made for Shohei Ohtani.

Davis Daniel is pitching well in the Arizona Fall League. Sonny DiChiara is showing opposite field power over there.

Clayton Kershaw got shelled by the Diamondbacks on Saturday.

Kyle Wright will have shoulder surgery and will miss the 2024 season as a result. So will Sandy Alcantara who had Tommy John surgery.

Former big league ball player Joe Christopher passed away at the age of 87. Jim Poole passed away at the age of 57. He had ALS.

In the very bad behavior department, six South Dakota high school baseball players are charged and are being tried as adults for rape. They face 100 to 150 years imprisonment if convicted.

Here goes the first pitching casualty in the Angels org. But it’s not who everyone expects, or wants to.

Dylan Axelrod is a pitching performance coordinator this past season:

Wow, that was a terrible offer from Tampa for Shohei.

Not sure I agree. Junior is a very young infielder who at age 19 generated .2 WAR in 34 AB which is 6 games. Doing your math thing, that projects to 5-6 WAR in a full season – and he’s 19. And he came with 2 other top 10 Rays prospects. For 2 months of Shohei.

I agree. To get three top prospects for two months of Ohtani is about as good as it gets.

If that was for two months, just think of what the haul could have been if Ohtani was dealt in 2022……

But they’re Rays prospects which means they will immediately turn to pumpkin mush as soon as they leave the organization .

Going from a top flight organization to eating ramen and basically coaching yourself definitely wouldn’t help.

That’s a tremendous offer

Going to disagree with you on this one. Six years of a young infielder plus two other top 10 prospects from a great organization is very solid for two months of Ohtani.

ok, ok. I was going off what I could see at Baseball Reference, that’s not showing me his minor league stats. Now I get it. Caminero, I’m talking about. Don’t know who the other 2 top-10ers are

Big night. Bobby Miller on the mound. Is he a future staff ace? Are the Dodgers going to pay Ohtani if he’s not pitching next year? If Miller shows out I think they use him to anchor the staff a year. If he blows up, maybe they go after Snell and others to fill the staff.

I feel like the teams looking to shell out for Ohtani are lesser now than before. It could be a sleeper team like an Arizona or Cincinnati that has young talent that could peak his interest even if they offer slightly lower cash.

Sammy wrote a piece on Jeff Bannister today for the Athletic. He’s the Dbacks beach coach and wants to manage again .

Hmmm – did he cross paths with Perry in Texas? He might get a look.

Doubtful Perry left the Rangers organization in the late 2000s while Bannister spend over 2 decades with the Pirates before leaving for Texas in 2015

You combine Arnold and Downing and you get Salmon.

I think it is going to be Showalter and I’d be very happy with that choice. They absolutely need to revamp their Player Development on the pitching side – and perhaps the High School scouting arena. We’re bringing up guys that are hitting, but we’re failing to find top notch guys on the bump. Out of that entire pitcher-only draft, we’ve had one guy up for about 12 innings. That’s completely unacceptable.

Wasn’t that draft like two seasons ago? I wonder how many pitchers were competing in MLB this season for Cy Youngs that were taken in the 2021 draft.

Whoops, I was thinking more of the 2019 draft where we had 26 pitchers taken, 17 in the first 21 picks so I should have said pitcher-dominant draft. That’s the one with 12 innings of work from Davis Daniel. So, even more pitchers were drafted than the 2021, which has had Silseth and Bachman up, I believe. Regardless, we are missing on way too many pitchers when you watch other organizations spit them out like candy in a vending machine.

Me thinks he’s trying to convince himself, however the really desirable candidates will know better.

Really? These jobs are incredibly finite and the Angels, despite obvious organizational “issues” are a team that spends 175 million+ on payroll every year.

Nah, there are plenty of solid candidates for this job IMO.

Orioles issued 11 walks in losing to the Rangers. Put a fork in them, yep, they are done.

Kershaw is without a doubt one of the best pitchers I have ever seen, one of the best ever. How can it be he is a part of one of the biggest mysteries the sporting world has ever seen? A mystery so large that Jessica Fletcher and Perry Mason and Nero Wolfe combined cannot figure it out. Why does Clayton fold in Postseason?

I happen to know that Mr. Wolfe had Archie Goodwin at Dodgers stadium, taking in the game and asking questions. He was to report his findings on Sunday. My guess is he will come to the conclusion that Kershaw is a great guy, future hall of famer, but his career is done. Wonky back, misses a LOT of starts, is a fan favorite. But I think that outing exposed reality.

Wait, a 3 year gap in age makes Trout “much older” than Ohtani.

At those ages, the decline accelerates, particularly since Kershaw has a chronic sore back.

Hence why the 2020 WS really doesn’t even count. He pitched in front of empty or small or “home” crowds (all Dodger fans in the WS). The Dodgers did an exceptional job of hiding him is whole career against the likes of a very weak hitting NL West. Like a Jeter, you out him on a different team or division, different career.

I also believe A lot of it is ego . For example During the 2019 Nats Game 5 meltdown he came in from the bullpen and pitched out of the stretch despite being told statistically he was way worst and guess what ? In 2017 in Houston despite being told that there were strong suspicions that the Trashstros were cheating he refused to mix up his signs each inning with no one on base only to get completely shelled . I’m sure there’s others situations too

This year it’s because he’s injured and lost velocity.

Good morning to all, did you watch MLB this weekend or College and Pro-Football or a little of all?

So how important is winning the first game of a 5-game series? If you lose the first game you must then win 3 of the next four. tough task. In a 3 game series and seven game series taking the 2 or 4 of next six seems very doable.

I love it when a plan comes together – Go Twins!
