It was Patrick Sandoval versus Zach Eflin for this game. It was very uneventful until the third inning when Jordyn Adams got his first major league hit.
The one other hit in the game through three was by Randy Arozarena. There were a few walks of course.
In the fourth inning, Isaac Paredes singled and Curtis Mead walked to put two men on with one out. Osleivis Basabe hit a ground rule double to make it 1-0 Rays. Josh Lowe hit an RBI ground out to make it 2-0 Rays. Jose Siri struck out. Patrick Sandoval was up to 67 pitches at this point. The Angels went three up three down.
In the fifth, after a couple of ground outs, Randy Arozarena reached on a fielding error by Jordyn Adams. Harold Ramirez and Isaac Paredes both singled resulting in a score of 3-0 Rays. Curtis Mead doubled to score Harold Ramirez. Isaac Paredes also scored after a successful challenge by the Rays of the initial call at the plate. 5-0 Rays. Curtis Mead made it to third on the play. Osleivis Basabe hit another double to score Mead. 6-0 Rays. Jaime Barria came in to pitch at this point, intentionally walked Josh Lowe, and struck out Jose Siri.
Hunter Renfroe hit a two out solo homer in the Angels fifth to save the Angels from being shut out.
Luis Rengifo then singled to bring up Jordyn Adams who got his second hit. Nolan Schanuel grounded out to end the inning. Three singles in a row by the Rays in the 6th inning loaded them up with no outs for Harold Ramirez, who doubled. 8-1 Rays. There was a mound visit whereupon Isaac Paredes homered. 11-1 Rays. No Problem! We got ’em right where we want ’em. Now we could send out a position player to pitch in the sixth inning.
Barria got Curtis Mead out but then walked Basabe. Josh Lowe hit a fly ball out to bring up Jose Siri who homered. 13-1 Rays. Christian Bethancourt showed some mercy by striking out.
Yandy Diaz singled to center and reached second on another error by Jordyn Adams. Randy Arozarena homered to make it 15-1 Rays. Harold Ramirez singled to right. Barria somehow got the next three guys out in a row to bring the Angels back up.
The Angels did nothing of note in their half of the seventh and sent in Jimmy Herget to pitch for Barria in the top of the eighth. Josh Lowe singled to welcome Herget to the game. Jose Siri struck out but Christian Bethancourt also singled. Jonathan Aranda walked to load them up with one out. Randy Arozarena struck out on ten pitches. Harold Ramirez singled to drive in two. 17-1 Rays. Isaac Paredes grounded out Schanuel to Herget.
The Rays brought in The Amazing Criswell to pitch. Nolan Schanuel celebrated with a single to right. Shohei Ohtani doubled but Schanuel only made it to third.
It’s OK. Brandon Drury homered. 17-4 Rays.
Velazquez, O’Hoppe, and Grichuk made quick outs to end the inning. Eduardo Escobar came in to pitch for Jimmy Herget. He got Mead out on a grounder but Basabe singled and then Escobar hit Josh Lowe. Jose Siri walked and then Christian Bethancourt hit a sac fly to left to score Basabe. 18-4 Tampa Bay. Jonathan Aranda grounded out to end the top of the ninth. Escobar was the best relief pitcher of the day for the Angels.
Hunter Renfroe grounded out. Luis Rengifo flied out to left. Jordyn Adams reached on a fielding error by third baseman Curtis Mead. Nolan Schanuel walked. Shohei Ohtani was replaced in the batting order by Eduardo Escobar. He grounded out finally to end this masterpiece. Angels lose 18-4.

The caption of the headline picture should be “ yeah Shohei let’s get the f*** out of here”
You have cornerstones in O’Hoppe at Catcher, Neto at Shorstop, Schanuel at First base. I would leave Moniak in Center Field and it’s time for Trout to move to a Corner outfield spot aka Left Field. (Like how Torii Hunter gave way to Trout, it’s time for Trout to give way to Moniak). Drury at Second base, Bring back Moose to play Third base. Ward can play Right Field (assuming he comes back fully healthy). See what you have in Adell, give him a fair shot to play everyday or Trade him for Pitching. DH could be a rotation (Trout, Ward, Adell whoever isn’t playing the Outfield that day). This is assuming the soon to be 2 time MVP Ohtani leaves for Greener pastures of another Franchise that cares more about Winning than the Angels. Of course I’d love for Ohtani to come back to the Angels and prove to the naysayers wrong that he can in fact help them get to the Playoffs and Win ball games in October (More of a dream than reality).
Get rid of Rendon’s contract, Trade Rengifo, & DFA Velazquez. Renfroe, Escobar, Cron can sign with another team. I’d bring back Urshela (assuming he comes back fully healthy) and Grichuk (Backup Outfielder in case Ward isn’t fully recovered). Look for more Depth/Upgrades in Free Agency for Infielders and Outfielders. I’ll talk about Pitching side for another day, lol. Just some thoughts on how the Angels should look next year as the MLB season is winding down and another year of missing the Playoffs is becoming more certain with each passing day.
Torii Hunter moved to RF for PETER BOURJOS in 2010. Trout had not even debuted yet.
98 games in CF for Torii … 51 for Fleet Pete
https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/LAA/2010-roster.shtml
I once posted on here or the old site the same false memory about Torii moving for Trout. It is like an Angels “Mandela Effect.”
https://www.simplypsychology.org/what-is-the-mandela-effect.html
In 2011 Trout was Called up playing all Outfield positions until he was the Full time CF in 2014 (Didn’t play other Outfield spots like 2011-2013). That’s why I was thinking about 2012 when Trout Officially took over CF (Spent majority of the time in CF while still playing LF & RF) and Torii Hunter was in RF. That’s when I thought he passed the torch over to Trout in the Outfield. Yeah Peter Bourjos and Torii Hunter covered CF in 2011. Funny how I was looking it up Online and it says “One of the best center fielders of his generation, Hunter moved full time to right to accommodate Trout in 2012.”
Trout would have to be okay with moving to Center Field, but knowing him, I doubt he would be happy about that. He’s already demoralized as it is playing in a dumpster fire, they don’t need to pour more gasoline onto the fire.
It’s kind of like Aaron Sanchez’s situation where he refuses to move to the bullpen even though he always injures himself because he is not willing to swallow his pride.
Agreed, Trout would have to Okay the move to LF. I remember Maddon suggesting it in Spring Training. The Media followed up on it and when asked, it was news to Trout. He mentioned somewhere down the line he’ll think about it, but not yet. This was like a few Seasons ago. At this stage I’d rather have the younger Moniak hold down CF.
I more or less agree with most of what you said but I would not go into next season counting on Ward, Moniak, Grichuk, or Adell to be an every day starting player unless they prove otherwise between now and then. It should be understood that the team as you just described it isn’t going to win anything. It’s a good start but it needs help. They at least need a third baseman and probably a right fielder, both of which need to be middle of the order bats. That way they can use the DH to rotate guys through as you describe. Otherwise I see little hope for a winning record. So I guess a decision will need to be made regarding whether or not the team plans to be competitive or they’re waiting for a future year. The thing is, it seems like all the players they were waiting for are already here. There’s no one left in their minor league system that will likely provide any help for many years. They are not in a great situation after this year.
The Angels Organization needs an Overhaul. Go back to the California or Anaheim Angels brand as well (Most likely won’t happen, but just putting it out there). Arte needs to sell the team and let someone else who knows about building a Baseball team buy the Angels. Replace the Coaching Staff by bringing in an experienced Manager (Unless they’re willing to allow me to Manage the team, lol). Pitching coach that knows what he’s doing, Third base coach that has a better feel for sending and holding runners, etc. The New Owner needs to allow the Angels’ Radio/TV announcers to travel with the team as well, crazy how that’s not the case. Keep numbers retired. Salmon, Anderson, Guerrero (Trout exception since it’s already too late) to name a few should not have their Jersey Numbers available for others to wear (Like C’mon these are the Angel Legends). Put importance back into building a Farm system. Start with the fundamentals which includes emphasizing working counts in the batters box, situational hitting (Shortening up swing and making contact with RISP), stealing bases, going first to third, playing good Defense, etc. (Mike Scioscia’s philosophy when he was Managing here, that’s when they were the most successful).
The new owner also needs to build a new stadium since most of the facilities are super outdated. I’ve been to ballparks that are way nicer and the facilities are up to date.
Invest in an actual nutritional facility, I don’t buy the “they addressed it a couple of years ago” because it was probably low effort and only did it to “fix their bad optics”. Build a state of the art training facility, hopefully this will help the with injury prevention because this injury bug has been going on since 2016 and is getting tiresome.
And for the love of god, actually invest in the farm system and scouting department and not do this patching a boat with many holes using scotch tape like the current ownership does.
We were seriously anticipating more than normal rain today, heavy rain, floods, high winds, so far hanging in there, which is welcomed. Although I need to spend some extra time on drying my umbrella off, so there is that. ☔
Maybe the Earthquake in Ventura Co. will open up the ground and all this water will fill it up and we will have a big beautiful new lake…..and next summer instead of following this shitty baseball team we can all go fishing 😀
Be safe up there GPB.
There has to be sufficient plastic shopping bags that were banned between CA, OR, and WA to cover the bottom of earthquake produced hole so that we could create man made lake, right. I still have somewhere around 200 of them for donation, and I will invite myself for fishing if that happens. That would be fun!
Out of all the things MFYankees did wrong, at least I have to give credit (must be a day of feeling generous to the organizations I usually despise) for playing Anthony Volpe. Yes, he has struggled, but he is getting valuable lessons in playing at MLB level. He just hit a three run homer (cheap one because of short right field porch), which tied the score with Red Sux.
Interesting call/challenge at home plate of MFYankee’s field. The MFYankees runner coming from 2nd to home on 2 out base hit was initially called safe, but reversed by umpire review requested by Red Sux. I thought the initial call was correct because I had the same play when I was in high school and did the same thing by sliding from my feet to get between the legs of the catcher to reach the home plate before the tag. The plate umpire correctly called me safe.
MFYankees challenged the call arguing for catcher’s blocking the plate. The umpires correctly called no obstruction. They are still tied 5-5.
BTW, Aaron Boone has not been ejected from the game, yet. He actually looked pretty cordial.
MFYankees lost 8 in a row, first time since August 1995 when they also dropped 8 in a row. Many mental health professionals in NYC will be super busy come Monday.
I have 2 Yankee fan buddies….
“I don’t know which team is my baseball team anymore. Disgusted with the Yankees” he texted me 2 days ago.
Turrible.
I sent him this photo from yesterday’s massacre I attended:
Misery loves company?
with the Skankees loss today the Angels have a clear hold on WC6
I am quietly cheering for Nats to sweep them. If that happens, with the Rays playing them next at Tropicana, 14 in a row is no longer out of the question. Their fans are so sick of Cashman and Boone that they are probably longing for such losing streak.
Everything this team does turns feculent. It’s just about impossible to care any more. Arte needs to sell the team and take his team of incompetents with him. Note that I don’t include Perry in that cohort. He does the best he can given the idiocy dripping down from the upper levels of management.
All of us Halo fans can take cold comfort in watching the best years of the two greatest players of the last half-century, maybe longer, get utterly wasted.
Arte and the Feculant Nincompoops
Arte and the Feculant Nincompoops sounds like Broadway Play or a Traveling Circus.
From the LA Times story this weekend about how the Angels and Blue Jays are the only two teams who don’t let their radio broadcasters travel with the team for the away games:
“I feel so badly for Angel fans that they don’t get the real story from an incredible broadcast team that Terry Smith and Mark Langston are, that they don’t have that luxury to help share,” Minnesota Twins radio announcer Cory Provus said. “This amazing team that features two of the greatest players to ever play the game and only be able to tell, really, the real story for 81 games is a joke.”
The article goes on to say that the Angels would not allow Smith nor Langston to be interviewed for this story.
Mark and Terry are the biggest reason that I look still look forward to games each day. You have to wonder if Terry is going to retire sooner rather than later as it must be no fun to call a game by watching a video screen.
Yep. I like them both. They are consummate professionals. Cheap Arte doesn’t care.
How much money can Arte possibly save by not having them at away games? With the money in sports it’s gotta be comparative peanuts
They would pay for their hotel bill for each night on the road and an eating allowance. Then a plane ticket for each to and from on each plane ride. I cannot think of much else. Cheap Arte.
The article said it would cost Arte $58,000 to send the radio crew out for the away games for the year. The writer took a jab at Arte by mentioning that all of the small market teams, even the Oakland A’s, are spending the money to send their radio crews on the road.
Wow, $58,000 a year. Wow.
(what does Rendon make for every game missed?)
I ran into Terry at Valley View Casino Lobster Buffet once. He’s not a cheap eater.
hahahahah
Sounds like another reason why he needs to be sent for away games. At least he would be forced to walk to expend extra calories in the airports rather than being cooped up in Big A radio studio. Assuming that he is not allowed to use golf cart in those airport concourses. 😉
Won’t give Arte another dime. Not just for this – for many other reasons.
I don’t think it would have been that difficult to find a Japanese sponsor (crowd funding) to simultaneously radio broadcast on the internet. As I mentioned earlier, there is at least one Japanese YouTuber who has broadcast every Angels game, and he is being sponsored by local (Sapporo) ramen and curry restaurant outfits.
Well, yes, relatively speaking it is peanuts. But we know about Arte ; he doesn’t want to pay a few international scouts, why would he want to pay to fly his broadcast crew around the country?
I believe, with no specific evidence, that he doesn’t pay scouts at all but has Perry rely on internet draft rankings.
I would make an argument that the radio announcers need to be at the field more than TV counterparts; the formers are ‘experts’ in creating the visuals in our minds while informing us all the essential parts of the game, such as pitch and out counts, the names of the pitcher and batter while describing the plays on the field. I have noticed frequent hesitance on Terry and Mike this season when the batted balls are especially in the extreme outfield line area where many blind spots of TV camera.
I agree about 99% with this quotation from the article you’re referencing.
There are just too exuberant of adjectives in the quotes…
“incredible broadcast team”
and
“amazing team”
lulz.
Must be a DiGiovanna or that Will Shakin’ guy who usually write anti-Angels stuff anyway. They are hacks. The criticism in this case is valid but man … those guys are printing on my recycled TP.
Arte is like a guy who buy a fancy house but is too cheap to keep up with basic maintenance, so his house starts to look like shit.
You can’t send your radio guys on the road? You can’t pay for scouts? But you can pay out the ass for Rendon?
What kind of crackerjack operation are you running?
Thank you for sharing. It really is pathetic.
I am about to give another credit to MLB. Two in the same day; that is amazing. Also need to give kudos to that hated east coast cable company, too.
This alliance of MLB and Little League has been paying dividends since 2017. There is no equivalent event in any other major sports, basketball, football x 2, or ice hockey. The event will assure production of world wide life long youthful baseball fans.
Barria is hurting and may be ready for the IL….. Sandoval is no longer a pitcher on his way up, but a pitcher that is not ML material…… So, if I was a GM of a big-league club and make a trade for let’s just say Cron, don’t I first get to have my medical staff check him out? Oh, they did 😬 …..Proof positive of, “If you throw enough shit up against a wall, some will stick” is Moose stuff…..The theory that defense is over rated has been proven wrong once again by another sub .500 team (Angels ’23), kind of the definition of stupid, right?…..Gawd it was awful and hurt my ears, Gubbi couldn’t get in enough nice things to say about Sandoval yesterday, kinda like Patty O. talking about him. Gubbi said twice how good Sandoval was not throwing balls over the plate but, throwing them off the plate for strikes, huh? So, the mistake is throwing a real strike?…..Does anyone really know what time it is? Take a pick or two:
You now know Trouty returning does not mean Playoffs, right?…..Giving up 18 runs at Home is embarrassing, especially charging money for the game seats instead of having a real Doubleheader…….Finishing better than or even at .500 is just not going to happen here…..Fans in New York, for both teams, want heads to roll. So right now, the odds-on favorite as a MLB manager to not return in ’24 are number 1, Buck Showalter, 2. Phillip, 3. Aaron Boone. Jeez, Phillip can’t even win at being favorite to lose his job, what a loser-lol.
….. 18-4 loss and you wanta talk about the Playoffs! Hahahahahahahahahahahaha.
especially charging money for the game seats instead of having a real Doubleheader…
What does that mean?
The house was packed last night.
The day game looked like it was being played in Oakland. I was there.
So should they have allowed one ticket to be used for both games?
They used to. That was an attraction, two for one
Yes – I remember. Saw Soth hit a homer in three rivers once during a double header in Shittsburgh
It means just this; you should have got a refund or free game to see the crap you’re so seemly proud to have been witness too. 18-4, jeez.
We were chanting for refunds in the 7th inning my aged buddy.
I have to give credit to MLB and three SoCal teams for canceling today’s games and playing double headers yesterday. The owners probably did not like revenue drop as respective first games were noticeable in empty seats, but that was the right thing to do.
For my fellow CtPG people who live in SoCal, Arizona, and Nevada, please do not let your guard down even though Hilary got now downgraded to tropical storm. Please heed your local authorities advice and take care of yourselves for the next 36 hours.
Did Phil say the Angels played a great game in the 18-4 loss or was he referring to the first game?
yes
Mumble mumble we’ve got 26 guys and a staff mumble mumble you look in that room you’re gonna see some down guys mumble mumble the effort’s there we’re playing hard you know we’re playing baseball mumble mumble I treat this loss like it was a one-run game okay it didn’t turn out that way mumble mumble you can’t chase wins every night mumble mumble trust me he cares he really really cares mumble mumble he deserved better than giving up nine runs in one inning
They are really working hard…mumble, mumble……nobody works harder…all the hard work is going to pay…mumble, mumble…….
Nothing but vomits.….how about this, we are a bad baseball team.
Phillip is by far and away the worst manager the Angels have had since, well since, Joe Maddon, Ha-ha.
Blasphemy. Phil does not belong in the same sentence with Maddon.
I am not sure this dysfunctional Organization deserves Shohei Ohtani. A rare and remarkable talent like he is should be on a quality team within a great baseball Organization as opposed to being used as the center of a marketing plan and treated like a circus attraction.
Went to the rescheduled 1 pm game it was fantastic, nobody there. Got front parking, great $8 club level seats, had lunch / beers in BreweryX. Watched Chase get lit up, but they pulled off win. Tried to coax me into $10 tix to stay for next game, thankfully declined. The team sucks, but I love our stadium. Way better than that traffic crap hole full of drunk gang members the Dodgers play in.
I tried to buy tix to game 1 and clu level were $40 on the cheapo sites I was looking. went to the night cap and WOOF …
Great firework show, though! Yipppeeee!
You stayed for the fireworks after that debacle?
I started a “fireworks” chant in like the sixth inning
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I didn’t need fireworks. Had them at the Bowl the previous night.
Congrats
<"
Send him back to restart the 4 to 5 years of redevelopment. 😀
Just awful. Feel bad for the kid.
He got his share of Bronx cheers last night. Standing O from 239/240 when he made a routine catch after the two errors.
I think that given his athletic ability, he might be a good outfielder for the Angels. He is just not ready defensively (like Adell in 2020). I appreciate Nevin talking to him in a compassionate manner in the dugout. I felt sorry for Adams like I did Adell in 2020 and 2021. At some point, our minor league instructors need to be accountable.
Probably not ; but he CAN dunk !
Jordyn Adams DUNK – YouTube

Interesting article re Schanuel being called up.
Happy for Schanuel but isn’t this more an indictment of the Angels farm system and their inability to select and develop players? The fact that this is their best option in the farm system speaks volumes about this team.
What happened to the 2021 all pitcher draft guys?
Best guy thus far is Chase Silseth (9th rd).
I know what you think about me, but I’ll state my comment in the least pejorative way possible.
I think this is a You Know Who person move (ain’t Perry either!) because he’s watching the season slip away and with it any chance of retaining Shohei Ohtani.
It’s a panic move, and now I’m starting to wonder if he was behind the rushing and spectacular fails of (Jo Adell, Reid Detmers) because somebody else commented about this last week after Detmers was pounded by Houston and Seattle. I actually believe we could lose Ohtani and still assemble a winning team for next season if we build a team based on speed, run manufacturing, and defense and hopefully Reid Detmers and Patrick Sandoval can figure it out.
That was a well thought out and presented comment. Thank you.
The number one thing this franchise needs in my opinion is to be rid of Arte and his cronies. Then the rebuilding of the minor leagues, coaching, scouting, player development etc.
With those things happening and some good young talent (as you point out) this team could become dynamic and fun to watch fairly quickly. Ohtani would be elsewhere, Rendon hopefully unconditionally released and the team starts anew with some vision and good baseball people making decisions.
I’m very much with you on all of this. I took a lot of heat for my early recognition of the Rendon disaster and I am happy to see you have caught up with me.
I don’t think it was your take on Rendon that drew heat, it was your incessant posting of the same take – it got old real fast.
Yep. What a bunch of stupid asses we were for having some glimmer of hope for Rendon
Congrats again – you win every day
🏳
I have some glimmer of hope about many things – O’Hoppe, Neto, Schanual. Not so much for Tony Rendon.
I lose every day, just like the rest of us. I want to be friends with you, you’re funny as anything. If it takes me never to mention his name again, I’m happy to do that.
Oh we are all friends here, trust me. With friends like us, who needs enemas?
It’s just you seem to need to be reminded that you’re the first and smartest (you brought it up) and we are just recognizing it. You still win – again! 😀
Rendon is a sunk cost. He provides no value when hurt and little value when he’s playing, he takes up a roster spot that could be occupied by someone who easily provides more value, and he keeps the team from moving forward. I support DFAing him and recognizing you made a mistake.
Adell was rushed in the big show in 2020 and that turned out okay…..oh nevermind.
someone had been saying that Dia-barria was a serviceable reliever.
Yeah, he serviced the Rays all right.
So it is my birthday and I went to the game.
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday!!!!!🎂
We drove down from Paso to the Santa Clarita Chuck E Cheese for 4 year old grandson’s birthday
It was his longest road trip ever and I got to listen to most of the first game (WIN) on the way home.
Uncle Chris set it up and Winston got to meet his other Grampa…raging success with no cringe moments.
adams botched that but sandy is a bad body language headcase goofy weirdo that should never be trusted in any game after spring training.
Good players deserve a nickname. His name is Patrick… like Spongebob’s goofy buddy.
That plays.
Also I agree w good players deserve nicknames … anyone that calls Andrew “squid” should be perma banned .
maybe………”Squib?”
But Squid fits bc he inks
DFA Now is a good nickname for him.
Just like a classic SpongeBob exchange:
Phil Nevin: “Patrick, you got the loss”
Patrick Sandoval (Looking at scoreboard) “No I didn’t!”
“Full Count” Sandoval.
He also might not belong in the Major Leagues.
Sorry C26, but these are now established facts.
Sandoval was great in the WBC, then he stunk as an Angel. I wonder if there isn’t some negative effect the coaching has had on his performance as an Angel?
On a brighter note, we’re ahead of the skanks by percentage points. I enjoyed reading a skank fan comment on pinstripe alley saying “without Cole we’d be worse than the Angels”. The funny thing is they have Cole and they’re still worse than us! Haha
I mean….I guess.
Yankees haven’t finished a season under .500 since 1992. That’s 30 years of over .500.
Angels haven’t finished over .500 since 2015. And during most of that time of absolute futility the Angels have had 2 MVPs.
So very tough to compare. They win.
What a bunch of turd-burglars.
And ar-tards
