Good Morning Angels fans! Have some links!
Angels News
Despite all the technical issues, and a blown lead, and bad defensive plays, the Angels won last night, somehow. They are still in this playoff race, and, for now, Ohtani is still here.
Aaron Loup has been better as of late. Seriously. Why is this? Well, according to Loup himself, it is because he lost weight.
Will the Angels buy or sell? Well, they better not want Lance Lynn, as he has the Angels on his no trade list.
Around Baseball
Themed nights are all over baseball. But, Emo night? Really? Did not think there was much overlap.
Dodgers get Kike Hernandez back in a trade with Boston. Wait, is Boston selling or?
Padres trade Castillo to the Marlins. Wait, Marlins are buying?! Is that allowed?
Kris Bryant is injured again. Seems like an Angel…
Cubs are a free team! They will be allowed to sell game streaming straight to fans.
Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!
Sammy is concerned. I will X (formerly twitter) him Remember that Sho No Trade Before Deadline Magic Number is still 2. With that message, he will sleep better tonight in Detroit.

Disclaimer: I do not receive any ¥ or $ from Sammy or the Athletics.
“Confirmed that these trades will push the #Angels over the luxury tax.”

But but but … I was told Arte would never do it.
I am over the moon right now. If you can’t find some sliver of enjoyment in the Angels going for it with Shohei AND Trout idk what to tell ya.
Next 2 months will be the most excited 2 months of Angels baseball since 2014.
OMG CHEAP ARTE HATES BASEBALL!!!!!!
I think there is a good chance that Angels are shopping Renfroe for reducing CBT obligation by $11.9MM/3=3.93MM.
You may right. Notwithstanding of the financial benefits, trading Renfroe makes us a better baseball team lol
Who fills his spot? Need a better OF.
Without doing much research of who will be on trade candidacy, the first name I came up with is Cody Bellinger ($12.5 MM x 2 year with mutual option for next season). I don’t know how feasible that is, but if Angels can pull that off, our chance of making playoffs will be significantly better.
The Cubs would do that?
It will largely be dependent on how they will do for the next 5 games against St. Louis and Cincinnati. If they go 1-4 or 0-5, both Bellinger and Stroman will be available on July 31 to Aug 1.
Cubs are 4.5 GB WC3 and 6 GB Milwaukie, very similar to Angels situation. I did not have any idea that the Angels were going to declare today to go for all or nothing. Huge risk. They could have waited at least until second game of Toronto series.
Trout Moniak Ward
This is some real Last Dance stuff for Arte. Burning prospects while also making the compensation for Ohtani leaving a 4th rounder.
So I guess the upshot if this doesn’t work is that Arte probably sells the team.
Apple with the assistance of David Beckham and Masayoshi Son would be happy to take the ownership at $3 billion.
Sounds like a win – win to me.
I’m speaking for myself here, this season always felt like the Last Dance with Shohei, with a moderate possibility he re-signs if we make the playoffs.
Whats the fun in not chasing glory with the best player the game has ever seen?
If it works? Yay.
If it fails and Arte sells ? Yay
First time since 2004
That year? Vladimir Guerrero
https://twitter.com/jonmorosi/status/1684413585680748544
that’s interesting. Not overwhelmed but does it mean Rendon is Rendone for the year?
gotta be
Rendon is about as reliable as a broken down cadillac
If the Angels somehow manage to acquire Jeimer Candelario, can they place Rendon on forever IL?
Then he would actually be Rendone !!
I never thought the Angels are the team that would start trade Tsunami. I am not dreaming, right?
Every couple years the Angels become the talk of the sport:
Pujols + Wilson signings
Greinke trade
Hamilton signing
Shohei signing
Trout extension
it’s always out of nowhere lol
Oh I dunno.. Guerrero signing here kinda knocked everyone’s socks off, he was as good as being fitted for blue up the road.
Did that shock the baseball world at the time? I honestly couldn’t recall
From a lazy G search:
“The Angels and their owner, Arte Moreno, came out of nowhere last Thursday and started talks that wrested Guerrero, the Montreal Expos’ low-key superstar, out of the clutches of the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles.
The Mets said they offered Guerrero a three-year contract worth $30-million with two vesting options that raised the value to $71-million over five years, then attempted to mollify angry fans by indicating that Guerrero was uninsurable as the result of a herniated disc suffered last season”.
Sounds good to me. Throw the Vladdy signing on the list.
The Man from Vlad. Damn I miss treat guy. He and his sidekick Erick Atbar.
Quero is a top 100 prospect. He’s a stud and luckily we traded from a position of depth with O’Hoppe and Thaiss handling catching duties.
Bush is a solid SP prospect.
Giolito was the best SP on the market and we got him. I am sure the Harvard Westlake alum would be more the amenable to signing an extension with us.
Good work from Perry imo.
and he is a free agent in 2024 . this is not a good trade.
Were you hoping to get him for Adell and Cabbage?
Nah, the corpses of Walsh and Fletcher should have been plenty to get the best SP on the market
🤣
We gotta prove to Shohei’s mom that we are serious about making a playoff push NOW
Yeah, agree. My gut reaction we left meat in the table. While I am good with trading prospects, feels like a better bullpen arm should have came as well to offset a 2-month rental. I’m not a big fan of Giolitto. Gives up too much hits.
Neither am I ; he’s susceptible to the long ball as well …
Yeah, just gonna say, Quero was blocked… We have O’Hoppe AND Thaiss so no. 1 and 2 for next season and likely beyond… Trading Quero made sense… I just wished we could have gotten somebody better than Giolito. I wonder if a package was offered for Cease?… Now HE would have moved the needle
Lucas and his career ERA of 4.26 not so much …
Sensible take JF !
I read CHW took Cease off the market. If they trade him, they better get more than Quero and Bush
Yeah, I understand that. That is why I said a “package.” We are deeper now than we have been in a while… I am kind of bummed about Bush… His size, being a lefty etc… I felt he was a keeper. For Cease I would have been okay, but Giolito, not so much …
Maybe part of the reason they took him off is they saw the offers were not to their liking — they thought they weren’t getting enough etc…?
I blame Arte!
Wow they actually did it…they got Giolito
White Sox got our two top prospects. Just ask the Braves how that works out.
For a 2 month rental and a journeyman reliever?
Boy Perry & Arte are desperados
Giolito will be extended in the off-season.
If he is then this is a big win . If not we’re idiots.
Posted OFFICIAL: The Angels have acquired RHP Lucas Giolito and RHP Reynaldo López from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league LHP Ky Bush and C Edgar Quero.
On angels twitter
When they pulled Quero from the game last night, it was going to happen. Maybe the trade was delayed a day…
but Quero played today and went 1 for 3 with a walk so kind of weird.
Honestly the big winner here is Thaiss. He solidfied us being able to trade Quero and make a run!
Now, I gotta give Sammy some credit for his yesterday’s twitter regarding Quero being pulled from the game although someone said that he was playing tonight.
Giolito!
Cool. Let’s take a few extra hits of hopium and stash the Haterade for another day
fascinating that all of us are so tuned in that we all rushed here to talk about it. We must be fanatical!
Not sure what we are – I’ve been called everything from a pollyannical rainbow farter to the CEO of Team Doomer. Crazy stuff
I think the JackFrost Haterade flavor is working! LOL!
Both Daniel Murphy and Fletch are playing in Tacoma now. That eliminates them from joining Angels tomorrow. It will probably be a pitcher, not named Ingram, who has just come in for relief.
BTW, Fletch’s BA is at 0.378, and Murphy’s at 0.301.
Pitchers, and waaay more impressive than Fletch
I gotta check when Giolito and Lopez last pitched assuming that they can get there by hopefully by the second game.
giolito 3 days ago, 5 innings, 0 runs
You are too fast. Lopez pitched on 7/23 for 2 innings. Giolito on the same day for 5 innings. That means that Giolito will be available as soon as 7/28.
you’re fast, too. I checked it out, came back and you’d already posted Lopez’ info
When you are fired up, fingers work fast.
I’m ready for a midnight gamethread. Let’s start now
With Moose hitting as well as he is I think it is alot less likely we see Murphy though ..
My favorite item that I found tonight…
I don’t care though, let’s get the boys back on the field and see what this team can do.
🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
BREAKING: The Los Angeles Angels are finalizing a deal to acquire right-hander Lucas Giolito and right-handed reliever Reynaldo Lopez from the Chicago White Sox for catcher Edgar Quero and left-hander Ky Bush, two top prospects, sources tell ESPN.
https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/1684410376580993024?t=GfV7Ns-8G7ceMVLvikHyng&s=19
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOO
HOLY SHIT I GOTTA HOPE THIS IS REAL
Angels twitter release confirms
Holy shit!!! It’s on baby!!
This would require 2 40 man moves.
Tucker and Webb released?
Anyone following the 66ers tonight? Perry’s Over rated Prize Nolan Schanuel is making his Pro debut tonight along with Rios and others. So far Nolan is 2 for 3 with a HBP and a 2 out rbi. Not a bad debut.
Way to go Schnauzers!
Alden Gonzalez just now on ESPN,
“Angels hope to have Mike Trout back in 2-3 weeks… Looking to add bullpen help and would like to add a starter as well. They need pitching depth.”
It’s going to be too late by then
Mr. Sunshine strikes again! 😉
The wildcard race won’t be won or lost in August. This will go into late September.
Don’t lose hope, my friend.
Remember that Sho No Trade Before Deadline Magic Number is still 2.
Trout is no doubt chomping at the bit to get back now that the team is legitimately chasing a playoff spot with 2 months to go.
Phil made an interesting comment re: Trout’s status earlier this week. I’m paraphrasing here, but he essentially said that it will come down to Trout’s pain threshold in regard to returning sooner vs. later.
It struck me as a rare example of straight talk as opposed to the usual “coach speak” that we hear.
My prediction a week or so ago was Trout is targeting a return Friday, August 11th in Houston.
Everything we’ve heard seems so support my guess that Trouty will be returning closer to the 4-5 week mark than 8 weeks.
Trout is not only the ultimate competitor, he was the undisputed best player in baseball for a decade.
When he can manage the pain, he will be activated.
Est. Competitive Balance Tax Space $2,570,219
There is a little wiggle room, but not mutch.
and they reportedly want a starter and relief help…no chance without exceeding the CBT
Of course if they want to stay below and add pitchers, they’ll have to trade people like Renfroe and Escobar by the deadline. That alone, frees up almost 21 mill from the CBT
Source?
https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/payroll/
If I understand it correctly, and I probably don’t, if we add $20 million in salaries Arte would need to pay a $3.6 million tax. 20% of how far we’d be over.
If he were willing to add $20 mil then I think he’d be ok if it came to $23.6 mil.
Hey, those of you who are still hoping for a haul of good prospects over compensatory 2-4th round draft pick in 2024, please do not lose hope. According to MLBTR, until 3:00 pm PST on August 1 passes, other clubs and their fanbases might hold out a small amount of hope about the Halos having a change of heart. Perhaps losing four or all five of their remaining games before the deadline might affect the organization’s thinking. Yet it seems they’re fully committed to buying right now, and Ohtani’s impending free agency means there should be urgency for the front office to strike boldly for upgrades to help that playoff push.
Remember that Sho No Trade Before Deadline Magic Number is still 2.
Verducci said his info was from his source. I never trust unnamed source. I like Yoshida’s Teriyaki source, though. 😉
The White Sox are baffling. They look good getting off the bus and yet they’re 20 games under .500….
They need to give us Giolito
Texas Rangers decided they didn’t want to join the WC just yet …
Look at the beat down happening in Houston right now
Love it, hate it
It’s still top of 5th inning. With horrible Rangers bullpen, Houston can still come back. Remember what formerly Indians did to Mariners. I remember that game when I used to cheer for Ichiro led Mariners.
The biggest comeback in MLB history occurred on August 5th, 2001, when the Cleveland Indians came back from a 12-run deficit to beat the Seattle Mariners 15-14 in extra innings.
In that game, the Mariners had a 14-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Indians scored seven runs in the seventh, four runs in the eighth, and one run in the ninth to tie the game at 14-14.
The game went into extra innings, and in the top of the 11th inning, Jolbert Cabrera hit a sacrifice fly to score Kenny Lofton, giving the Indians the lead and ultimately the win. This incredible comeback set the record for the largest deficit overcome in a game in MLB history.
And that was the year when the Mariners only lost 46! games the entire season ( tied the ML record for victories with 116) So I doubt this shocking loss really affected them.
Lou Piniella may have said something along the line of “turn the page” at postgame. 😅
And Seattle got revenge by winning the division series against Cleveland.
Good ol’ time. Then 9/11 happened. 😩
And then 6-14 happened . Scoreboard mermen
If Cease is off the table, I hope Perry pursues Giolito or Stroman. My assumption is that Gio would cost a bit less since
he’s in his walk year deal wise.
And Giolito’s salary is $10.4 million. I am pretty sure the Angels wouldn’t exceed the luxury tax threshold if they acquired him.
Stroman’s salary is $25 MM with next year at his option for $21 MM.
Abe Stroman. The strikeout king of Anaheim. Has a decent ring to it
Which prorates to about 4.5 million for the balance of 2023.
10.4/3=3.43. Close enough. 😉
Never mind. I just found a source that shows the Angels are at the luxury tax threshold.
If the reports are true, they’ll go past the threshold. They couldn’t have made the decision to buy without accepting that they’ll take on more salary.
Of course it would be just like Cheap Arte to tell Perry to do whatever it takes…without adding to the existing payroll.
Giolito is also a choice of mine.
For the reasons you mentioned, but also being a local product he may be open to resigning with the “hometown” team.
Once upon a time, Giolito was one of the names being brought up on a potential Mike Trout trade, back when he was approaching his big FA year, as an upcoming ace-like starter that will anchor the rotation for years to come.
It would be funny if he ends up on the same team with who they were trying to trade him for.
Yup. He makes sense for the Angels on multiple levels.
The time off allowed me to figure out how to clear my “continue watching” list on Prime Video.
What a hassle
