LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Buy or Sell?

Good Morning Angels fans! Have some links!

Angels News

Despite all the technical issues, and a blown lead, and bad defensive plays, the Angels won last night, somehow. They are still in this playoff race, and, for now, Ohtani is still here.

Aaron Loup has been better as of late. Seriously. Why is this? Well, according to Loup himself, it is because he lost weight.

Will the Angels buy or sell? Well, they better not want Lance Lynn, as he has the Angels on his no trade list.

Around Baseball

Themed nights are all over baseball. But, Emo night? Really? Did not think there was much overlap.

Dodgers get Kike Hernandez back in a trade with Boston. Wait, is Boston selling or?

Padres trade Castillo to the Marlins. Wait, Marlins are buying?! Is that allowed?

Kris Bryant is injured again. Seems like an Angel…

Cubs are a free team! They will be allowed to sell game streaming straight to fans.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

Sammy is concerned. I will X (formerly twitter) him Remember that Sho No Trade Before Deadline Magic Number is still 2. With that message, he will sleep better tonight in Detroit.

But but but … I was told Arte would never do it.

I am over the moon right now. If you can’t find some sliver of enjoyment in the Angels going for it with Shohei AND Trout idk what to tell ya.

Next 2 months will be the most excited 2 months of Angels baseball since 2014.

I think there is a good chance that Angels are shopping Renfroe for reducing CBT obligation by $11.9MM/3=3.93MM.

You may right. Notwithstanding of the financial benefits, trading Renfroe makes us a better baseball team lol

Without doing much research of who will be on trade candidacy, the first name I came up with is Cody Bellinger ($12.5 MM x 2 year with mutual option for next season). I don’t know how feasible that is, but if Angels can pull that off, our chance of making playoffs will be significantly better.

Kiyotchan

It will largely be dependent on how they will do for the next 5 games against St. Louis and Cincinnati. If they go 1-4 or 0-5, both Bellinger and Stroman will be available on July 31 to Aug 1.

Cubs are 4.5 GB WC3 and 6 GB Milwaukie, very similar to Angels situation. I did not have any idea that the Angels were going to declare today to go for all or nothing. Huge risk. They could have waited at least until second game of Toronto series.

This is some real Last Dance stuff for Arte. Burning prospects while also making the compensation for Ohtani leaving a 4th rounder.

So I guess the upshot if this doesn’t work is that Arte probably sells the team.

Apple with the assistance of David Beckham and Masayoshi Son would be happy to take the ownership at $3 billion.

Sounds like a win – win to me.

I’m speaking for myself here, this season always felt like the Last Dance with Shohei, with a moderate possibility he re-signs if we make the playoffs.

Whats the fun in not chasing glory with the best player the game has ever seen?

If it works? Yay.
If it fails and Arte sells ? Yay

Every couple years the Angels become the talk of the sport:

Pujols + Wilson signings
Greinke trade
Hamilton signing
Shohei signing
Trout extension

it’s always out of nowhere lol

From a lazy G search:

“The Angels and their owner, Arte Moreno, came out of nowhere last Thursday and started talks that wrested Guerrero, the Montreal Expos’ low-key superstar, out of the clutches of the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles.

The Mets said they offered Guerrero a three-year contract worth $30-million with two vesting options that raised the value to $71-million over five years, then attempted to mollify angry fans by indicating that Guerrero was uninsurable as the result of a herniated disc suffered last season”.

Quero is a top 100 prospect. He’s a stud and luckily we traded from a position of depth with O’Hoppe and Thaiss handling catching duties.

Bush is a solid SP prospect.

Giolito was the best SP on the market and we got him. I am sure the Harvard Westlake alum would be more the amenable to signing an extension with us.

Good work from Perry imo.

Yeah, agree. My gut reaction we left meat in the table. While I am good with trading prospects, feels like a better bullpen arm should have came as well to offset a 2-month rental. I’m not a big fan of Giolitto. Gives up too much hits.

Yeah, just gonna say, Quero was blocked… We have O’Hoppe AND Thaiss so no. 1 and 2 for next season and likely beyond… Trading Quero made sense… I just wished we could have gotten somebody better than Giolito. I wonder if a package was offered for Cease?… Now HE would have moved the needle

Lucas and his career ERA of 4.26 not so much …

Yeah, I understand that. That is why I said a “package.” We are deeper now than we have been in a while… I am kind of bummed about Bush… His size, being a lefty etc… I felt he was a keeper. For Cease I would have been okay, but Giolito, not so much …

Both Daniel Murphy and Fletch are playing in Tacoma now. That eliminates them from joining Angels tomorrow. It will probably be a pitcher, not named Ingram, who has just come in for relief.

BTW, Fletch’s BA is at 0.378, and Murphy’s at 0.301.

Trout is no doubt chomping at the bit to get back now that the team is legitimately chasing a playoff spot with 2 months to go.

Phil made an interesting comment re: Trout’s status earlier this week. I’m paraphrasing here, but he essentially said that it will come down to Trout’s pain threshold in regard to returning sooner vs. later.

It struck me as a rare example of straight talk as opposed to the usual “coach speak” that we hear.

Pineapple12

My prediction a week or so ago was Trout is targeting a return Friday, August 11th in Houston.

Everything we’ve heard seems so support my guess that Trouty will be returning closer to the 4-5 week mark than 8 weeks.

Trout is not only the ultimate competitor, he was the undisputed best player in baseball for a decade.

When he can manage the pain, he will be activated.

If I understand it correctly, and I probably don’t, if we add $20 million in salaries Arte would need to pay a $3.6 million tax. 20% of how far we’d be over.

If he were willing to add $20 mil then I think he’d be ok if it came to $23.6 mil.

Hey, those of you who are still hoping for a haul of good prospects over compensatory 2-4th round draft pick in 2024, please do not lose hope. According to MLBTR, until 3:00 pm PST on August 1 passes, other clubs and their fanbases might hold out a small amount of hope about the Halos having a change of heart. Perhaps losing four or all five of their remaining games before the deadline might affect the organization’s thinking. Yet it seems they’re fully committed to buying right now, and Ohtani’s impending free agency means there should be urgency for the front office to strike boldly for upgrades to help that playoff push.

Remember that Sho No Trade Before Deadline Magic Number is still 2.

Verducci said his info was from his source. I never trust unnamed source. I like Yoshida’s Teriyaki source, though. 😉

It’s still top of 5th inning. With horrible Rangers bullpen, Houston can still come back. Remember what formerly Indians did to Mariners. I remember that game when I used to cheer for Ichiro led Mariners.

The biggest comeback in MLB history occurred on August 5th, 2001, when the Cleveland Indians came back from a 12-run deficit to beat the Seattle Mariners 15-14 in extra innings.

In that game, the Mariners had a 14-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Indians scored seven runs in the seventh, four runs in the eighth, and one run in the ninth to tie the game at 14-14.

The game went into extra innings, and in the top of the 11th inning, Jolbert Cabrera hit a sacrifice fly to score Kenny Lofton, giving the Indians the lead and ultimately the win. This incredible comeback set the record for the largest deficit overcome in a game in MLB history.
