The Angels returned from their short road trip to Colorado to face the White Sox. It turned out to become a pitching duel between Chicago’s Dylan Cease and Halos pitcher Reid Detmers.
The first hitter of the game, Andrew Benintendi pop fouled toward the Angels dugout but Rengifo lunged over the railing to make a nice catch for the first out of the game.
However, Luis Robert got the Sox out to an early lead by way of a solo home run in the first inning.
From there, it was pretty much nothing but outs until the 4th inning when Shohei said sayonara to an inside pitch for a looooooong 446 ft solo home run, and we’re tied 1-1.
After that both pitchers put on a clinic with Detmers slightly besting Cease by pitching 7 innings of 2-hit 1 run ball with 10 K’s. Cease pitched into the 7th but gave up back to back singles, including Mike Moustakas’ first Angels hit, before giving way to ex-Dodger Joe Kelly. The inning ended with a thud when Ward struck out and Thaiss grounded into a double play. Cease’s final line was 6 innings with 5 hits and 1-run allowed. He matched Detmers with 10 strikeouts.
Jacob Webb pitched a hitless top of the 8th inning but Reynaldo Lopez matched him in the bottom of the 8th. Carlos Estevez followed up with a scoreless top of the 9th to set the stage for the heart of the Angels order.
Mike Trout led off with a walk, after which the ChiSox removed Lopez and brought in Aaron Bummer to face Shohei, who also walked. Drury struck out, but during his at-bat Shohei and Trout attempted a double steal, but the pitch was wild anyway. That brought up Moustakas to be the hero in his first game as an Angel, but he didn’t need to be thanks to Bummer throwing another wild pitch that only got away from the catcher a bit. Trout was ready to run and scored easily. Angels win! 2-1. Bummer for Bummer!

Shohei Produce Dramatic Walkoff by Double Steal, Gigantic #26 Homerun and RBI Leader in Al, Team Now 6 Over 0.500
Leader in AI? Nice.
*AL
haha, yes Shohei won the game all by himself. Ya gotta love the hyperbole.
He did produce the only offense
Yes the death ray emanating from Shohei’s eyes caused the wild pitch.
Trout and the entire offense sans one beautiful swing of the bat by Shohei were neutralized so stealing a win at the end is awesome.
Really nice to see the double steal in the 9th. Trout still has the wheels to nab 20 a year, but that’s a different topic.
Law of averages would suggest that we’re due for a breakout game tomorrow….
IDC if we won by four consecutive HBPs.
Go Halos!!
I hope we don’t have anymore (hip) casualties:
Although Nevin said as long as they dont find anything or Mickey complains, he will play tomorrow.
He was trying for a triple to complete the cycle in Saturday’s game and tripped after footing the first base. Perhaps he needs to hire an instructor in hip hop dance.
Send him to the Free Clinic, or a find a RiteAid that has a health clinic….anywhere but our medical staff. I’d send him to Petco before them
Hip dysplasia…..the new Tommy John.
Gluteus maximus strain. Geez I don’t like the sound of it.
Don’t get butt hurt over it 😁
Detmers: Last 4 starts, 25.2 IP, 3 ER. So nice! (1.05 ERA) Has he turned a second corner?
Ace of Spades.. he’s becoming bad ass.
He should walk out to Motorhead’s “Ace Of Spades” – that would be sweet.
Don’t know who has been calling Detmers pitches, but wanted to give some credit to Thaiss, who has improved as catcher every game he has caught. He has blocked pitches that hit the ground well and has not interfered with batter’s swings.
I think slowing down his slider has been the key. Gives it more bite.
Nice win. Good teams win these games.
Detmers really only threw one bad pitch. The home plate umpire SUCKED! MAJORLY! It’s not often when you see Trout complain about called strikes and he was right, that pitch was 2 balls of the plate.
Ah, the International Umpire Conspiracy to Only Screw the Angels rears it’s head.
That’s Rule 303.c.(1)
A good win tonight, Halos. We beat the best pitcher, Reid straight up outdueled him. #Stud
Ugly win but a win is a win
Not really ugly on our side, tho
Nice 9th inning to get the win.
Watching the post game, Arte turns off the lights early to save money.
Miss the Edison days.
He has LED lights in the stadium, they don’t use squat as far as electricity goes.
Glad the Halos won. They need to find better ways to score runs against good pitching. But a win is a win. Let’s hope the bats get going the rest of this week.
At least Nevin did use double steal in the ninth inning, which directly related to the walk off run by WP. He could have signaled earlier hit and run or bunting when we had 1st and 2nd with no outs. He is learning.
Today’s win count just as much as the 25-1 win!
Facts
Yes Wally. I’m thinking of the two losses to the Dodgers and tonight’s game. Not scoring against good pitching is an issue. Again, let’s hope they turn it around this week on offense.
The win takes the sting off knowing there were *multiple* offers to buy the club at $2.5 billon bucks.
Of course there were multiple offers ; 2.5 billion is waaayyy too low.
The Suns sold for 4 billion !!
A w and I don’t have to read multiple cry baby comments from jayman, nice.
Serennity when the Angels win
Because you said that, I’m going to do it 3x as much now.
You’re the loser here in this situation so you do you.
It sounds like you need to take this beef outside guys.
87 win pace which is probably good enough to be the team that just missed making the playoffs
that’s ok, if we can maintain mediocracy with another 11-3, we might just make it
Poor White Sox are kept in check by our 1-5 pitcher.
.
And all they got was a Bummer. 😂
With no Major Key
What with being pulled with 2 outs in the 5th while ahead, or the bullpen giving up 6 runs in the 8th, or us getting shutout and so on, Detmers could gave 6or 7 wins. He’s no ordinary 1-5 pitcher!
ya, it shows that the W/L stat is over-rated
Shohei with 191 Total Bases at the half way mark, that could be just enough to get to the lofty 400 TB’s.
Homerun by Statcast, 113MPH, 446ft, 36 degree. Impressive.
Love the sound of the ball off his bat, it is unmatched
I was not there, but it is a beautiful sound.

Oh and he also anchors the pitching staff. He’s some kind of athlete.
I am Loving me some Trouti tonight.
I loved that Nevin called for double steal. Kudos to Nevin, who keeps on learning. He could have used hit and run when we had 1st and 2nd with no outs earlier.
#PhilRules
How do you know he called for a double steal and Trout wasn’t just going on his own?
I reviewed the play again, and both Trout and Shohei started at the same time. So, my conclusion was they called for double steal. Even Mark Langston said it was called by Nevin.
Arte phoned it in on the solo cup/string phone.
Well Nevin’s wise move tonight certainly does not off his clear stupidity yesterday and in the past.
Perhaps running Trout more will help him in the batters box? Grasping at straws here.
Angels come from behind Win!
