LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Giveaways for Days!

Good morning Angels fans! How you today? Have some links!

Angels News

Angels won their second in a row! 4 shutout innings by the bullpen and clutch hitting up and down the lineup means the Angels are 32-30 on June 7th.

It was Charlie Sheen’s 15th save, the most without a blown save to start a season since Percy in 2001. It is nice having a solid closer again.

He is not the only bullpen arm with a strong 2023, Devenski has not allowed a walk in his 15 games this season. Only the 2nd time an Angels pitcher has done that.

Anthony Rendon is back! Soto is sent down. Actually, this is a big deal, as non Rendon players hit better when he is in the lineup the last 3 years. Baseball is mental.

Speaking of, Hunter Renfroe will go on the paternity list soon. June baby huh? Wonder who will be called up? Fletch? Oh, maybe not Fletcher, who is now injured.

Tonight is Pride Night at Angel Stadium. If you did not know, it is because it wasn’t advertised anywhere on the Angels website or any of their email alerts/Twitter/TV.

What is on TV and such are the other giveaways, like the Christmas in June this weekend. Want an Ugly Sweater, slippers, or a youth Trout jersey? Come this weekend at the Big A! Wait, how is a Trout jersey Christmas themed? It isn’t even Christmas Mike Trout themed.

Around Baseball

Jacob DeGrom is out for the season. Tommy John for a 2nd time. Which could also mean an internal brace. Yeesh. But the good news is that he is being paid. A lot. Which now can be even more since the Rangers have the option to have him for another year due to his injury.

Alek Manoah has been sent down to the minors to fix his everything. No, not AAA, Florida Complex League. That is the Rookie Ball level for the Blue Jays. Sure, it is because they have the most advanced technology to help fix the issues, but that has gotta sting.

Oh and Aaron Judge is going to the IL for injuring his toe after he broke the Dodgers’ wall. Said wall is now fixed and won’t break again (challenge).

A’s to Las Vegas has stalled as the Nevada legislature didn’t bother to even bring it up to a vote. This is their last session until 2025. Sure, there is a special session soon due to not getting a budget finished, but the A’s stadium funding bill will not be a part of that. That is because they get a special, SPECIAL session just for them. Oakland fans are in utter agony, so be nice to them for now.

Luis Arraez is being very Tony Gwyn, not striking out and getting 7 times as many hits. Oh and hitting .401 on the season in June.

Our thoughts on Philly may not be the most positive, but the owner is certainly someone to admire as he cares about winning much more than making money.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

I am double plus huzzah for Arraez. I want him to hit .400 and place like 8th in MVP voting behind what ever overhyped douche is the NL = of Vlad Jr.

Alek Manoah is in the Complex League because he is an asshole and his entire org only wants him around if he is winning 30 games with a .90 WHIP. He is, on the other hand, stuffed with grit and fire. He is also very transparent. So maybe we need him? On the other hand, he is not white so…. is it still transparent grits? I’ve never been able to figure this stuff out.

Hey a’s fans, all six of you. They’re going to Nevada. You have lost your team. It may be next year, it may be five years from now, but they are not staying in Oakland because your city sucks ass.

Aaron Judge. Oh no. Pride night not hyped at baseball gathering. Oh no. Angels bullpen. Oh no.

Rangers got their Strasburg. Way to show commitmunk.

Both MLB.com and MLBTR could not talk enough about Elly for the past week. With general weakness of NL Central, they are saying that all these young studs for Reds might make the contender for division title.

I hope it’s for good, for his sake. Trout, Renfroe, Ward, Moniak, Adell. But Renfroe is not under contract for 2024, right? So trading Adell would mean we’d need another outfielder then.

Interesting starting lineup tonight with Moniak RF and Rengifo LF. Ward, Urshela and Adell are sitting on the bench.

My winning pattern of Rengifo being replaced in 7th inning or sooner is in dire peril. The only permutation I can come up is to cancel DH rule and put Shohei in RF and move Moniak to LF unless there is a relief pitcher who can play mean OF.

I can see that. Grif is probably like Shohei, who would be able to play all positions if you let him. I would not be all that surprised if he could handle swinging a bat well, either.

My wife pushed 3 hours to give birth to my first son. It’s been a funny joke between us that next time she marries someone. she needs to measure her prospective’s head circumference. My head is 90%+ circumference wise, and so was my first son’s head.

I am very much ready for any joke about my head size. Something along the line of “it’s not the size, but the motion of the ocean.” 😆

Have fun at Big A. It’s always funner when the home team wins.

The Foundation Building Materials’ keystone to the game tonight for the Angels against the Cubs is “La Vie En Rose” by the great Chet Atkins.

This beautiful happy chill of a song pairs nicely with the three-game winning streak our Halos will be sure to savor after winning tonight’s contest.

New article on The Athletic about Rendon, who finally opened up to Blum.

“If I’m out there, I tell myself I’m going to be the best player I can be out there,” Rendon said. “That’s why I tell myself, if I come out of the game, that means something is really wrong. But if I’m on that field, and I put that jersey on, I expect to be perfect. That’s me.”

“I don’t know,” Rendon said of his ability to be his old self. “We’ll see. That’s what I keep trying to work for.”

“finally”? lol – i’m ranting here but this is a Whiny Sam issue.

was he obligated to speak to him? Did he talk to Sarah, Jeff, and Rhett too?
What about the other 39 players on the 40-man? We should get a tally sheet that lists all 40 players and all the press and list out how many days each player goes without kneeling before Sam.

Its incredible how much whining Sam does – never have seen a beat writer make such a fuss about trivial matters unrelated to the game…Other writers don’t do this.

I thought similarly of Blum last season, he’s growing on me tho. Not my favorite Athletic reporter by any means, but the Angels’ organization deserve to be called out on their shit more times than not.

No issues with him pushing for this story because it came out great. Some of those quotes actually made Rendon seem … likeable ?

see- that’s just it – who or what makes you think Anthony isn’t a likable person besides a loud-mouth A’s fan and Sam Blum?

yeah i love the Athletic but i’m out because i’m just not down paying for a writer ragging on the team 50% of the time and stirring shit up just because.

AND i want to read about baseball – Sammy breaks the first rule of a journalist – he puts himself in the story and makes it about him.

There’s quite a few reasons why Rendon would seem unlikable to the everyday fan lol.

Blum wrote a nice article that was fair, allowed Rendon to shine thru, and gave reader’s discretion.

As a former journalist I don’t dislike Blum much nowadays, other than he is objectively annoying. He is solid on the beat. Wish he would crank out more stories.

My main issue was how he covered Trout’s back injury. That story felt like propaganda.

It’s funny. I have family and friends that are life long Nationals fans. Every one of them would have him on the list of all-time fan favorites. Few younger fans became fans of the Angels when he signed here. For many reasons, he was clutch, played great defense, team leader, the ladies loved him, soild in the community, great the press and loved by his teammates. Almost superhero status. Comes here and he’s the devil.

Let’s be honest, it’s his contract #1, #2 his worst ability with us, availability, and he’s playing on a spectacularly underachieving team with a horrible owner.

Still think someday he’ll be loved liked here…..kinda, sorta.

My comment was about Rendon, not Blum. My understanding is that he hadn’t said a word to the press the entire time he was on IL. It was nice that he finally agreed to an interview, and it just happened to be Blum.

I agree with the other responses though – I like that he doesn’t put up with the Angels front office BS and doesn’t sugar coat his stories. He does come across as a little whiny at times, but honestly the Angels have a lot to whine about between lack of success on the field and lack of accountability/morals/anything positive in Arte’s organization.

yeah i know and the rant as i said was directed towards Sammy.

its absolutely true there’s been a failure on and off the field for over a decade. i see it and it drives me crazy – but i just dont need reminding me of it every article –

Sammy can do Sammy but it’s certainly not worth paying for.

There’s more than enough bitching about the Angels here for me, and its free!

I will never understand the Scioscia hate. He’s the only person in history to manage the Angels to a world series, and there were so many players who had career or near-career years it feels like management must have played a role. Not to mention multiple coaches from that staff went on to be successful managers elsewhere.

Even if you want to claim Scioscia’s success was all do to his talented coaching staff, he’s still the guy that hired those coaches and took their advice.

And you can’t even realistically say that the 2010s are Scioscia’s fault because the game passed him by. It’s clear a large part of the Angels’ problems have been ownership, organizational spending, front office philosophy etc…, not managerial. I dare say Scioscia would be a better manager than everyone the team has hired after he was fired not extended.

In 1999 the Angels had a .432 winning pct. Scioscia took the helm in 2000 and the Angels never again fell below .450 until, you guessed it, 2019, the year after Scioscia left.

Scioscia’s worst year was 2001, with a winning pct of .463. If you recall, he turned that bunch of losers into winners the next year. Since Scioscia left, the Angels have been better than .463 only once – 2021 – and the .475 winning pct that year is tied for 2nd worst in Scioscia’s career (2003).

Whether you are 6 years old or 106, Scioscia is the best Angels manager you’ve ever seen.

I’m going to the game tonight, my second year in a row of joining/supporting a friend for Pride Night. I had to call my ticket rep to get the tickets for the special Pride hat and section and he had to email me a special link to buy them. It didn’t show up on the Promotions tab like fireworks nights or giveaways.

Not going to turn this into a political rant, but from a strictly business perspective here’s how I see it:

Any company that hosts or doesn’t host a Pride function is going to piss off somebody. And social media is going to give that somebody a bigger microphone than they deserve. In reality, the hit won’t be nearly as big as the Twitter-verse makes it seem.

So either do it or don’t and be willing to take the hit. But don’t technically do it while trying to hide the fact that you’re doing it.

I wonder if this sudden downplay of Pride Night has any connection with the pro-Christianity advertising that has appeared at Angel Stadium this year.

Speaking of, what does Jesus believed in his teammates too even mean?

Who were His teammates and what metaphorical sport did they play?

What does it mean that He believed in them?

If His disciples were His teammates, one of them doubted Jesus and another betrayed Him, so that belief was clearly misguided.

Why would Jesus even need teammates if He is all powerful and can win any contest all on His own?

Why is it in the past tense? Does Jesus not have a team anymore, or does He just not believe in them anymore?

Let’s not go down this rabbit hole. (Although as a guy who loves to dissect language I find the past tense laughable too.)

I will say last year’s Pride Night festivities were mildly promoted. I remember seeing an ad on facebook and having no problem finding the tickets. But the team wasn’t really all out in doing so.

The Dodgers getting so much heat for their event likely contributed to the Angels hiding theirs.

If Jesus were an Angel, what position would he play and where would he hit in the lineup (assuming he’s a switch hitter with equal splits)? I vote we not waste him as a pitcher until Wise is gone. Even a Wise visit to the the mound with Pitcher Jesus would cause a meltdown inning.

I’d say 2nd base and bat lead off. And his addition to roster we’d still be a .500 team. Still have trouble catching and throwing, bad situational hitting, bad overall fundamentals, and even Jesus wouldn’t stay off the IL. Still riding that Sad Angel Donkey

I think He’d be what Shohei does but instead instead of DH, He’s bumping Trout to RF.

But the story would be the same, reflecting on the song from yesterday “Nothing’s going to change my world”, and the press would be outraged:

“They wasted Trout, they wasted Shohei, and now they’re wasting God’s career”

Seattle Times sports writer yesterday published an article titled, “Are the Mariners ruining any chance to sign Shohei Ohtani?”

Cliff note version (since all of us are busy):

-Ohtani desires to go to a team with consistently strong potential for post season
-Mariners last season 90+win making playoff must have left a strong impression
-Mariners special advisor, Ichiro, is someone Shohei would be honored to play for
-Forbes reported that Mariners made enough profit to pay for Shohei’s contract

I am sure it was a click bait, but if that happens, Angels fans can say, “Good for him. Well, at least, we will get to see him 13 times a season.”

I’ve been loathe to engage in the “Shohei’s next team”’topic, but it seems fairly obvious to me that the Doyers are the obvious choice.

Perennial contender? Check.

Deep pockets? Check

Proximity to Japan? Check

And if he loves his OC home, he can still live there and play in LA.

I cannot adequately explain how much that would SUCK! It’s bad enough if the Angels do lose Shohei 😭 but if they were to lose him to the MFER dodgers….. 😭 😭 😭 😭

At least in my mind, it’s always been Dodgers or Angels.

No other team makes any sense for the exact reasons you outlined.

… and the thing that gets me too, is that the Dodgers won’t probably even be bothered if they get bitten by all the reasons that people are saying we shouldn’t sign Ohtani.

Like here we’re debating about committing $500MM to a guy who is getting older, might break down, might not pitch the whole contract, will make our payroll too top-heavy, etc etc etc.
On the Dodgers, if any of that happens, probably no one will notice.
They’ll still have all their Betts, Buhlers, Kershaws -types etc, and keep on going to the playoffs every year.

Shohei’s next team is either a pile of suckers or a pile of suckers rich enough to keep being stupid and not have it hurt too much. Doyers, Yankees, Red Sux, Mets, Giants, us….. Padres? Mariners? Probably not after they see their $$$ from this season.

You’ll be truly grateful that we have such a robust internet. So you can easily follow him in one, LA, Boston, NY, Texas, Philly, or maybe Seattle in a few months with a few keystrokes on your keyboard.

I’m resigned to the fact that we may not re-sign Ohtani

Wayne said last night Rendon was leading the AL in OBP and i thought that was odd because many here say he should be cast off to the depths.

If he had enough ABs to qualify, YES, Anthony Rendon would be leading the AL in OBP (.410), but he needs ~192 SBs to qualify for the Leaderboard and he is sitting at 104 AB.

i get it – we didn’t sign him for OBP%, spent too much, and he’s hurt …..but dude is still an elite MLB payer

Ehhhhhhh. He’s still a good MLB player. OBP-machine, no power, master of committing dumb errors.

Nonetheless, we need him healthy as we are clearly a much better team with Rendon on the field.

I keep hitting games this year without the giveaways. Of course, I’m going to Sunday’s game with the youth Trout jersey promo.

How will my 6’3, 28 year old self, snag a jersey 🤔🤔

I am also planning on going Sunday. As a result of primarily going to Sunday games I also miss the giveaways.

But at least we’re the same height, ha ha.

I will be attending Saturday night’s game, as the lure of baseball and slippers, that can be used to embarrass my kids in the future, caused me to open my wallet.

I went to sleep when the good guys were down 4-nil. Pleasant surprise this morning when checking the boxscore! Let’s get three-in-a-row today.

Who says no first – the Jays or Halos: Alek Manoah for Jo Adell?

I’d hire a real pitching coach like Matt Blake, Brent Strom or Kyle Snyder, make the trade and take the risk. OF is a depth area for the franchise and we need to get something for Adell before his value takes another hit.

good question – that’s a tough one for me but i’d say no

I’ve watched some of Manoah’s games this year. He just does not look right out there, mentally defeated. I don’t know if the weight of being an ace is weighing on him or not. So, my answer is no.

However, I suggest an extremely short-sighted trade idea that involves Adell. (I anticipate Adell call up while Renfroe take his paternity leave, with a chance for him to raise his trade value. 😉 )

Cody Bellinger for Adell and Moniak.

Bellinger is 27 yr old and eligible for FA at the end of this year, so could be just post ASG rental. Awesome CF (Trout would move to LF), also can play 1B. Did I also mention that he happens to be pretty good at hitting for power (159HR in 6 1/3 seasons)? If Cubs continue to struggle, they will become sellers, trading away Bellinger (and possibly Marcus Stroman)

If the main objective is to reach postseason this year, disregarding potential growth with Adell and Moniak (though we have not given sufficient opportunities for both), Minasian may feel compelled enough to consider this trade.

An emphatic no. I wouldn’t trade Moniak straight up for Bellinger. Moniak seems to be reaching his potential. (If he gets to play regularly). And the $ difference is massive.

if we’re going to pick up that much in salary, pick up a stud reliever.

Since it will be half season rental, it will be about half of $12.5MM. If we can pick up Aroldis Chapman ($3.75MM), you win the argument over mine.

I am little concerned with Trout’s CF competence this year, and that’s the basis for my trade idea. We will see at least 4 or 5 more weeks of Moniak (since most GMs hate to trade in June and early July), and if he continues to struggle and Cubs maintaining their dismal season, this idea may pick up its steam.

Marcus Stroman is a huge Mike Trout fan. I’d love for them to be teammates and for Stroman to take Anderson’s spot in the starting rotation, bumping Ol’ Knee Jerk to the long-reliever role.

I mentioned previously that Angels were fortunate not to face Stroman this season. Perhaps that was a good omen form Baseball God that Stroman would join Angels later this season. That would make Angels an instant contender for post season and beyond.

They also had a pair of 2 out singles by Trout and Thaiss, netting 4 runs in that crucial come back from behind 5th inning to boot. They were so unAngel like. 😆

The quality of the opponent definitely showed, and not just the errors that scored the first two runs. The CF from most of the teams we’ve lost to would have got to Trout’s hit and the inning would have ended tied.

Watched replay of last night game with Cubs announcer option. They defended their CF by saying that Trout took a huge swing which made him take a back step, which caused him to let the ball drop in front of him.

You are absolutely right that most CF would have caught that. It is almost like our Ward letting a fly ball drop in front of him.

The ball to Ward was bad. That ball was obviously going to check up so there was minimal risk of it skipping by for extra bases if he missed getting to it.

The ball to the gap in right center for the Cubs RBI double might have been chased down by a better center fielder than Trout.

The Cubs center fielder was almost on the warning track for Trout and got a really poor jump.

110% agreed. Trout was probably there for backing up Ward anyway. I thought Gubi said something about Ward playing LF too timidly, not to make a huge mistake. Then, again when he is around the outfield fence, he seems ready to march through it a la Aaron Judge, who is now on IL.

You could see his ass pucker anytime he got close to warning track.

I may have repeatedly cussed at the TV loud enough for the neighbors to hear and we live in the country. That is according to my wife but given her relationship to me, I move that she be removed from consideration as an impartial witness.
