Angels feel sorry for Oakland, lose 11-10

It can always be worse.

Seriously, imagine being a sports fan in Oakland. All your teams are gone. You cannot even fallback on college sports as Cal Berkley is facing its own crisis now that the Pac is in deep trouble and Cal itself may not support football for much longer. This is worse than what happened to San Diego, or Montreal, or Washington DC. Those cities at least had another team to fall back on, something to rally behind.

That is what you need to keep in mind when you think about this game. You see, Jose Suarez was just feeling so bad about the situation that he tipped his pitches for 3 innings and allowed 7 runs. That is the only explanation.

However, after a slow start, the Angels clawed back to tie the game and even took the lead, before blowing it to force extras. Because nothing can be easy for this team. Nope.

And they blew it in extras. Angels lose again and are under .500 again. Want more agony, read on.

Highlighted Recap

Jose Suarez was not having a good time, allowing two home runs in the first.

Oh and then another one in the 2nd.

So it was 5-0 A’s and it was only the 2nd. But luckily, the A’s suck, so the Angels hit one in the bottom half.

5-1 A’s

Sadly, Suarez still threw the ball down the middle and allowed yet another home run.

Make that 2.

This is when Mike Trout realized that Jose Suarez was being too nice to Oakland fans and told him to stop it so he did and pitched 2 innings without allowing a home run. Why Matt Wise didn’t say jack, no one knows.

Now that that’s over, Giggachad Wallach hit one out as well to make the game slightly more bearable.

7-2 A’s

Anthony Rendon then remembered that he hates Oakland so he doubled in Troutani to make it 7-4 A’s.

That must have felt like a punch to the gut

Giggachad then blooped in a 5th run.

LOLZ

Then Neto tied the game up with a double.

TIED GAME

It was a brand new game. And after Tucker Davidson had a shutdown inning, Brandon Drury brought in another run!

8-7 Angels!

It was now up to the bullpen to close this out. Well, about that… while the 8th went smoothly, Wantz couldn’t get that strikeout pitch and walked 2 batters in the 9th before being yanked. Barria came in and walked in a run.

Tied game again

And then, with 2 outs and the bases loaded, the A’s hit a grand slam-WARD CAUGHT IT!

HE ROBBED A GRAND SLAM!

Angels now have a chance to walk it off- and we are in extras now. Ugh. And then Barria allowed 2 runs to score.

10-8 A’s

Oh and a 3rd run.

11-8 A’s

Down 3, the Angels had to claw back again, and if it went to the 11th, yeah, this would not bode well. With a runner on second, a good hit would help. Drury came through and hit a home run, even if he doesn’t know it.

11-10 A’s!

After Rengifo tried to stretch a single to a double, a walk and a HBP put 2 on for Ward. He struck out. Mike Trout was next. He grounded to 3rd. Game over. Angels lose.

Upcoming

Angels lose again. Under .500 on the season. More A’s tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day…

Something tells me Suarez should not be a major league starting pitcher. Not sure exactly why. Just a hunch.

He is, just in a rut right now. That pitch clock is something that he needs to work with without throwing batting practice.

BTW-I’ve always said before you go for the bleached & too-cool-for-school haircuts (Barria & Suarez) you should first display stellar & consistent play on the field.

Suarez needs to polish @ AAA and Silseth should come up to the big club.

Suarez comes into camp every year chubby and they expect great results from a guy that doesn’t work out in the off season.

I think he is one pitcher that is dramatically affected by the pitch clock-HOWEVER, it’s a rule change he needs to adapt to.

Queue the “we suck again” memes! Man that was a fun game and a rough game. Ugly in the end. Pitching is going to kill us again this year – and maybe Rengifo.

There are signs this team could get hot and we’re still just a game below .500 but man it seems like we’ve wasted a lot of 7+ run performances on losses.

Love having the best pitcher in the AL but having a 6 man rotation to accommodate him has been an under-discussed downside to a team with bad starting pitching depth.

It was a well played game by two deeply talented teams led by two exquisitely strategic managers using the talent acquired by two of the greatest GMs ever to lace-up the wingtips.

Why does this GIF make me think of child molesters? Is it because it’s a grown ass man that’s into a Disney GIF? Is it because the black and white thing is oppositional to the imagery? Is it the dancing? The whole thing just gives me a “Single guy who hangs out at Chuck E Cheese’s” vibe…..

Why is this GIF supposed to piss us off specifically? I’m lost.

You’re a man well over the age of 15 who blows bubbles with his gum aren’t you.

IDK why?
I remember JW Gacy was into clowns, and Disney just took over SW recently. The reason why I picked DV and the stormtroopers was because my first choice (Predators) was too dark and the image quality of the GIFs sucked. BTW we need a POBO…….just saying and Tony LaRussa just doesn’t cut it.

The Oakland Coliseum to me was one of the better stadiums in baseball prior to the “Mount Davis” luxury boxes being built in 95 to accommodate the raiders moving back. A view of the Oakland hills in the background, and that hill surrounding the stadium, it looked cool; especially in that era prior to 93 before Camden yards ushered in all those new beautiful ballparks, back in the Bash brothers heyday when they had Rickey Henderson and canseco was best player in game. Almost forgot that since the stadium became a total shit hole. Their teams still good tho, right? Just gonna imagine Suarez was throwing to 1988-91 canseco, Rickey Henderson, Big Mac, and Eckersley closed trout out at end

Wow this season is frustrating. Even with the upgrades represented by Renfroe (total stud), Neto, Urshela and Drury – the team has the same problems.

And the starting pitching has not been that awful. Yes Sandy’s last start wasn’t great but he’s a gamer and generally performs. Detmers has pitched well and Ohtani is great. Even Canning has been decent in limited use.

Obviously the huge weakness are the ‘Pen, Anderson and Suarez – but what really can be done at this point? You can’t just keep getting rid of players without having viable replacements. Also a guy like Suarez is only 25 and has/had decent trade value and potential. So just DFA him after investing in developing him? Because why – anger?

And Anderson has been awful- but he’s Angel property for 3 years. So what can be done?

We all want to see something drastic to turn thing around, but in reality what can realistically be done at this point? And don’t say bring up Joyce – that’s not realistic.

What can be done? Here’s another chance to be Perry.

If I am Perry my first move is to go with a 5 man rotation.

Ohtani
Sandoval
Detmers
Anderson
Canning

Move Suarez out of the starting rotation to long relief with Barria. Use him to save the arms of other relievers so we don’t end up with so many ‘unavailable’ in important games.

Use Loup only in blowouts and if you can find a FA or realistically promote a milb arm, consider a Loup DFA to create space on the roster.

This is not drastic but does potentially avoid a crappy start every time Suarez takes the mound and provides another ‘pen arm.

Perry… Please fire Nevin. He is actively sabotaging this team.

If WAR was a stat for managers, surely he would be at least -2 by now

Worst Managed Game I’ve Ever Seen!

Why did Nevin start Suarez tonight? He obviously doesn’t have any stuff yet this year. Watching the lowly A’s just tee off against him was so stupid. We have so many other pitchers that would be better at this point – Barria, Davidson, Silseth just to name a few of the pitchers we have that WOULDN’T GIVE UP 5 HOMERS TO THE LOWLY A’S IN THE FIRST 3 INNINGS!

Then we are ahead by one run in the top of the 9th and he brings out Wantz who pitched in the 8th, who was just called up from AAA to try to get his first save ever. Why?! And then to relieve Wantz he brings in Barria who is a long reliever so basically a starter WHO HAS NEVER SAVED A GAME EITHER.

This is what you get when you fire a multiple World Series winning manager and go with a guy WHO HAS NEVER MANAGED A FULL YEAR IN THE MAJORS.

We looked good on paper and started off so well last year and then all watched as the team imploded. Then Arte resigns Nevin the interim manager to a one year contract for this year even when he has never managed in the majors before. Why!? It’s Shohei’s walk year!

With all the poor play early this year I kept saying that it’s still early and the Angels will hit their stride and be good but now I see that Nevin can’t get us to the playoffs and we are going to lose Ohtani for sure. Jeez this sucks.

SELL THE TEAM ARTE. SELL THE TEAM!

The answers to your Nevin is “worsted” questions are actually pretty obvious. Then you follow it up with a quick lick at the Maddon ice cream cone. Followed up with a whiney sell the team cry. I think you’re upset, maybe you should have some warm milk. You’re either not thinking strait right now or thinking is just a problem in general. It was a tough loss. It’s April 24th. Turd the page.

This is all very true, and I am sure many of us were thinking about this as it happened. I know I was :

Then we are ahead by one run in the top of the 9th and he brings out Wantz who pitched in the 8th, who was just called up from AAA to try to get his first save ever. Why?! And then to relieve Wantz he brings in Barria who is a long reliever so basically a starter WHO HAS NEVER SAVED A GAME EITHER.

And we could add to what you mentioned that fact that he stayed with Suarez WAAAAYYYY too long. If he brings in Davidson early on, like the 2nd after Suarez gave up the 5 runs and 3 HR’s we likely would have won this game… Just so many mistakes from Nevin. He confirmed all of my prior comments about him being an idiot…

And for the 9th, why in the hell don’t you bring in Estevez??? I mean, he only pitched 1 inning on Sunday. It is not like Closers can’t pitch two days in a row…. And even if you felt Estevez needed a rest (why in the hell would he? He’s pitched like 2 innings in the last week…) they you go for Q. Yes he blew it on Saturday, but that doesn’t mean you won’t use him again this season… And he’d STILL be a way better option than a second inning of Wantz (as you mentioned) OR definitely Barria….. I mean, Barria ? REALLY??

It looked like Nevin was trying to lose this game. If I had been an Angel player in the dugout I’d have been shaking my head thinking “What in the hell is he doing???”

Has Nevin become our version of Dave Roberts?. This certainly smelled like a game where Perry might have been issuing pitching changes from his perch on the Club Level….

I keep seeing these comments that Nevin is “actively trying to lose” and frankly I don’t get it, unless of course Nevin instructed Suarez to serve up 5 meatballs (7 runs) in 3 innings or he asked Mike Trout to go 1-6 and do his best David Fletcher imitation in the batters box.

Shrug.

Players, particularly handsomely paid players, need to perform better.

The one critique I might level at Nevin last night is that he pulled Davidson after 2.1, when he probably should have tried to get at least 3.0 out of him, but other than that, it’s on the players.

Really ? How many managers would have stayed with Suarez after giving up 5 RUNS on 3 HR’s in the 1st ??

Not many. And the fact you had Davidson waiting there (has started so has the ability to go 4 or 5 innings) makes it more of a crime. Finally, I did not say Nevin was trying to lose. I said it “looked” like he was. Big difference.

It’s time to jettison some some tubby soft tossers. They ruined a masterful performance from my boy Tucky D.

What backend? Nevin brought in Wantz a AAA pitcher with no career saves and Barria a starter/long reliever with no career saves. Nevin never gave our actual relievers a chance to save the game. Good thing Arte fired Madden and replaced him with a rookie manager. Sell the team Arte!

Shhhh…. you’re repeating yourself. Just drink some box wine, take a pill or two, think for a second or two, you’ll see why Wantz was in. You’ll probably even realize that Maddon would have been just as likely to lose this game as Nevin. Drink the pink wine, take a breath.
