LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Adell Streak

Jo Adell made it seven homers in six games, all against the Albuquerque Isotopes. He also struck out twelve times in thirty plate appearances. He now holds the Bees record for consecutive games homered and seeks to extend his streak against Las Vegas today. Jo Adell and Chase Silseth both get mentioned here as “Big Hype Prospects” although they admit that Adell is technically not a prospect anymore.

Phil Nevin says, “I thought Tep threw it really good. I left him in and it just unraveled.”

It appears Evan Gattis is admitting to steroid use and trash can use when he was with the Astros. Maybe it’s just a typo — not!

Carlos Correa is missing games with back tightness, although they think it will resolve itself soon. Oneil Cruz will be out for four months after his ankle surgery. Right hander Aaron Civale is on the injured list with a left oblique strain. In a related move, the Guardians selected the contract of Peyton Battenfield who is a pitcher so they probably don’t expect him to Battenfield. For JT Chargois, it is a right oblique strain. Adam Duvall has a fractured left wrist.

The Giants reinstated Joey Bart and designated Austin Wynns for assignment. The White Sox selected Keynan Middleton and placed Joe Kelly on the 15 day IL (groin strain).

Dallas Keuchel is still out there hanging Arizona around looking for a job.

Here is Tony Reagins at the White House Easter Egg Roll.

Taylor Ward played third base so he could play first base. If we want to give Adell another chance at the MLB level, then moving Ward to 1B is an option.

I’d be open to it if he took some practice there and felt good about it. You’re right, he doesn’t need extra stress and distraction.

In the same lane…. Hunter Renfroe has actually played 3 very awkward games at 1B.

One breakout prospect candidate for each team

April 6th, 2023

Angels: Walbert Urena, RHP (No. 17)

Signed in 2021, Urena lit up radar guns in the Arizona Complex League in 2022, touching triple digits, and he will work on refining his command (7.7 BB/9 last year) as he hits full-season ball for the first time.

“It’s a big fastball, he flashes a plus changeup, the breaking ball has continued to come along,” Angels farm director Joey Prebynski said. “Physically, he’s gotten stronger over the winter. He’s continued to improve his ability to repeat his delivery and compete with his stuff in the zone.”

8 BB/9, is that bad?

Last season Patrick O’Neil said on a Angel’s Pregame show, that Perry’s absurd 2021 MLB Draft strategy with the 20 pitchers was to develop organizational depth (A strategy for good/great teams……..Dodgers, Astros, Yankees, Braves. Not the right way to go for a team with a 7 yr streak of consecutive losing seasons and a decade of inept dearth of scouting and player development. Also done on purpose and deliberately by a single person who I won’t mention by name on this blog, but Joc Peterson has probably heard of this person!).

I looked at this home stand as a 3-3 run, maybe 4-2 depending on the Blue Jays series.

A sweep of the Nats was on the table with Corbin on the mound yesterday. Hopefully we can still pull off 3-3.

https://www.mlb.com/angels/news/jose-suarez-s-short-start-shakes-up-rotation

gitchogritchoffmypettis

That 6th starter spot is going to be a serious pain in the ass for a while. Suarez may have been a victim of the bloops, but he also got rocked, AND it seemed like almost every hitter was also fouling off a ton of pitches. Imagine pitching THAT version of Suarez against the Astros or Braves. If he doesn’t start missing bats soon we may see both Canning and Tucky in the rotation, which isn’t wonderful. It would be a huge help if, in the next few weeks, a guy like Silseth was really ready to be good.

This is an issue that I won’t miss if Ohtani leaves. Most teams can’t field 5 solid starters. We’re supposed to find six of them?

Jeff Joiner

Suarez was throwing everything at 82-84 MPH last night. No speed variation between his change and slider. And I didn’t see many if any fastballs being thrown the last couple of innings.

JackFrost
Super Member

Reply to  Jeff Joiner

He did throw the fastball early Jeff. I specifically remember seeing 94 and 95 mph. That was very likely the 1st or 2nd inning however… You may be right that he went away from it later.

In the end, Suarez didn’t pitch as bad as the numbers would indicate. Though he did give up 10 hits, there were only 2 extra-base hits, both doubles neither which was especially hard hit. There were zero triples and zero HR’s and 10 singles. Of those singles many were slow infield rollers or bloopers to the outfield. In short, he got really unlucky. The Rengifo error also really hurt him by prolonging an inning he should have been out of.

its an inconvenience every ten days – the big issue is there’s no depth on this staff.

the land laughs that our offense falls off after Trout Ohtani, but after our Top 2-3 starters, our other pitching is second-division level.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  RexFregosi

Our starter depth is fine 1-4, which is about what most teams can pull off, even play off teams. But 5 is usually risky and ours is VERY MUCH that while #6 is a mystery and will likely strain our already hated bullpen even more.

Remember the good old days when managing our interchangeable roster of suckage was easy, choice of 4 or 5 scrubs with options O’plenty to put on the daily shuttle back to SL? Now with an upgraded roster and pitchers that suck with no options it becomes much harder to manage the pitching staff.

Very disturbing loss that demonstrated many flaws with this roster makeup. As much as we struggle with Rendon, both the line up a defense are vastly better with him on the field. I don’t know how they fix the bullpen as high contact relievers may be a lost concept with the defensive shift/deep infield limits.

If Rendon and Walsh get back in the lineup, not counting on it, the INF defense will improve, OF and catcher D are solid, middle IF bad as it looks, limited range and Rengifo exists. Might be time to bring up the .160 hitting Squid to replace .160 Phillips. Phillips only job is tending to the HR hat, Squid won’t need to cover the OF often, can give us late inning INF defensive and some speed.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Sadly, I think Squid may get Fletchers job if we are going defense over not hitting IF.

Cowboy26

Why ? if his defense is still as good as its been in the past, the odds of Fletch returning to form are a hell of a lot greater than Squid learning how to hit above his weight.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  Cowboy26

Why are Fletchers odds better at this point? Where as Squid is a very very good infielder.

I don’t actually think they should, or will, make a move as of now. But why would Fletch be safe if we were? It’s been years since he actually hit. We’re all screaming about needing SS defense. Squid will actually out hit and out HR the current version of Fletcher…. why would Phillips be the DFA?

Cowboy26

Last night was clear evidence of our deficiencies to a far “inferior” and inexperienced team. it reminded me of the halcyon days of the Houston Trashstros. Their season record would be horrible but they would shockingly still kick our experienced veteran lineup’s ass virtually every game.

The Nats have a bullpen. We all know we do not. The Nats have team defense. We cant seem to make average plays in the infield. The Nats have team speed . We play station to station baseball that seems to wait around for the home run.

You can win without possessing all of these elements. But ultimately, possessing none will be another lost season.

Minasian is delusional about his overpaid underperforming bullpen per his interview with Jeff Fletcher. Until changes are made (DFA Loup/Tepera) at a minimum, failure will continue. Team average BABIP at .345 is not a winning formula from our junk ball throwers is inevitable. Phil mismanaging is another problem. He needs to let his guys finishing innings.
