LA Angels Monday News Crash: Making Progress

Jared Walsh is making progress but they still don’t know when he will be back. Jo Adell just keeps hitting homers.

The voting over at MLBTR seems to favor Griffin Canning as the Angels sixth starter. Here is a Perry Minasian interview.

Jake Odorizzi will miss the rest of the 2023 season because of an arthroscopic shoulder procedure. The Phillies will lose Darick Hall to thumb surgery. Omar Narvaez will miss eight or nine weeks due to a bad strain to his left calf. Travis D’Arnaud is on the seven day concussion IL while James McCann is now back from the ten day IL. Zach Davies has a strained left oblique muscle. Jonathan Loaisiga is on the 15 day IL with elbow soreness.

Facing our draftee Patrick Corbin tonight. Needless to say we need to take care of business.

Man. If only Arte had shown some commitment to winning and we’d signed him. Sure, he said he wanted to sign with an East Coast team, but I don’t believe first hand information, only friend of a friend type stuff. If Arte had just offered him a little more money we’d be enjoying all the greatness Patrick Corbin has been providing. Four strait seasons of a WHIP over 1.4 and league leading hitability for only an average of 22M a year. And JUST 35 million next year!

There is no contract more deserving to be the first “If Arte really cared about whining he’d just get it done!” of the modern Halos fan wank fest. Also also totally champion failed and didn’t sign Strasburgh either… oh the magic that could have been….

I say we beat him tonight, but if we sad donkey it hard enough maybe we find a way to lose.

Walsh has no timetable for returning as his issues with sleeping and headaches continue. This team misses his presence in the line-up is true, but we miss his stellar defense. Jared, if you our “Mail” then know this dude, you are missed and we are getting headaches too wanting you to return.

What can y’say?

The offense is superior, and reasonably deep. The rotation needs some tweaks, but Canning and Silseth might be that, and it looks otherwise competitive.

But, yes, the bullpen is a mess, and could make this team a 50/50 club until it’s reinvented. Not even an I-told-you-so – just a full-on drunken skip into an obvious mousetrap.

It was a visibly nagging problem last year, it was a chronically unaddressed problem in the offseason, it was a spooky-bad problem in spring training. One-year-wonder Moore and control-plagued Estevez weren’t solutions, they were whiteboard post-it notes by Minasian saying “I was here”.

Fix the bullpen, and this might be a postseason club. For a team that has had too many problem areas to count in recent years, that’s a step in the right direction. But finish the friggin’ job, Perry.

Too early for a trade or three to enhance the BP? I think not. As we all know, dropping games in April count the same as dropped games in September.

Sure, just tell me which MLB team is shopping a relief pitcher you consider to be quality and tell me who you think we are trading for him and we’ll get right on that here on April 10th.

Yeah, obviously most teams probably aren’t champing at the bit to sell off quality players on April 10th, but we could (and should) overpay if necessary.

CRod is down again with a hurt shoulder. Eric Torres ( BB, WP & 4! HBP’s in 1/3 of an inning) & Ben Joyce ( 4 BB’s in the rest of that inning) both imploded on Saturday . After being perfect in Spring , Jacob Webb has a 19.29 ERA in 3 appearances.

So Is it time to move Silseth and/or Bachman to the Pen?

After watching yesterday’s blowpen I’m not seeing a lot of options down on the farm.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  Cowboy26

Bachman and Silseth need to do their jobs, learning to be starting pitchers, right now. This is yet another reason a GM doesn’t panic like his balls are on fire on April 10th. Panic isn’t a plan, and we wanted a plan on the farm, right? We’ll likely get a less sexy arm from AAA if things get desperate so soon.

I still like Joyce as an ASAP call-up, last Saturday’s 4 walks notwithstanding.

All that being said, it would be nice to get more than 5 innings from our starters.

Slightly surprised that Trout hasn’t taken a breather yet, but considering how well he’s playing, that’s likely a good thing.

Jose Saurez is the living embodiment of ‘Mid’ so since his last start was atrocious, we should get something serviceable this time around. Is a solid 6 innings too much to ask for?

I was thinking “well you said you wanted to win, so do it”.
I guess since he didn’t come through, he’ll have to admit “well, it isn’t Arte’s fault after all” and he’ll sign an extension with us later today.

The Angels scored 23 runs in this three-game series against the TOR BJs. How many runs were your favorite Angels responsible for creating?

Remember, players get credit for which part of the run they were responsible for creating. If Trout hits a double and then Ohtani hits an RBI single, Trout gets credit for 0.50 runs by making it to second on his double, and Ohtani gets credit for 0.50 runs for creating the hit that sent Trout the rest of the way home.

5.00 Trout
4.50 Renfroe
3.50 Ohtani
2.50 Rendon
2.00 Urshela
1.25 Rengifo
1.25 Ward
1.00 O’Hoppe
1.00 Drury
0.25 Thaiss
0.25 Fletcher

Using this same partial-credit methodology, let’s rank the Angel pitchers. For the pitchers, however, we take the number of runs they are credited for surrendering and divide that by how many batters they faced. (# of batters faced is in parenthesis).

Also, the stats for the pitchers are year-to-date.

0.00 Quijada (11)
0.02 Ohtani (48)
0.05 Sandoval (44)
0.05 Wantz (17)
0.08 Estevez (20)
0.11 Anderson (47)
0.16 Detmers (45)
0.17 Herget (15)
0.19 Barria (25)
0.21 Moore (11)
0.23 Tepera (10)
0.26 Suarez (22)
0.27 Loup (12)
0.29 Davidson (7)

gitchogritchoffmypettis

I actually hope the offense gets out to some big leads and then they bring in Loup, Tepera, Barria etc… get some mileage on them, see if they can get stable or fall apart in lower leverage test innings. Same with Suarez and Tucky D’s (probably) starts this series.

Realistically, this week, next week, then start having meetings about who yields innings to whom and maybe calling up Canning, and a Weiss, Rosenburg, Garza, Webb, Diaz type for the pen…. who ever is hot.

The Adell sitch makes me sad. Almost wish there was a need/opportunity/lineup spot for him with the parent club to prove conclusively, once-and-for-all, if he’s an inveterate AAAA hitter or a budding star who just needed an extra season or two to adjust his approach. Important to remember he’s the same age as ex-college players like Garrett Mitchell (seeing his first sustained MLB action this season) and Heston Ker-whatever… who’s still a Top 5 prospect in the Orioles system despite having a much-less-impressive minor league stat sheet than Adell.

Check Swing

More time in AAA won’t hurt him. He earned that bus ticket to the minors. If he’s really on to something, the results will continue. No need to rush him back up now because of a hot week. Even fat boy wasn’t fat boy on his first call up. Jo will get another opportunity eventually. I hope that whatever he’s working on is the correct formula. I mean why not? I rather have more good players then bad players. Maybe that’s just me tho.

Anyways, did I mention that Adell went deep for the 6’th game in a row? He hit 2 diggers yesterday. So yeah, let’s trade him for some guy that pitches in the 6th for a couple of years. Obviously he is blocked for any chance here because Renfroe is signed for the entire season and injuries never happen to our outfielders…..like ever. Jo will never become a major leaguer and should just quit baseball now. Maybe get into a trade school while he’s still young enough to make something of himself

If this team had a bullpen they’d be 8-1, and cooking opponents. Perry needs to eat that $14 million spent on Tepera and Loup and find better guys or else this team in flounder around or below .500. It should contend for a WC but the bullpen will tank the starters and ruin the offenses’ morale. Perry is managing with his heart. He wants to win the clubhouse so he will trot out those two even if they suck because he’s trying to give them a heroic chance. But the prospects still aren’t ready. Did you see Joyce walk a whole team?

Man, yesterday’s game was a lot of fun. Detmers shutting out Toronto’s explosive offense for 5 innings while his offense built up a big lead. Renfroe, Ohtani, O’Hoppe going yard. The Angel pitching meltdown and Toronto’s big comeback (although several key BJ knocks were just squibblers).

The Angels score four runs in the 8th and 9th to tie the game!

Two outs in the tenth with the bases loaded with Trout and Ohtani due up, and Trout ends the game with a pop up to the catcher, but wait! The catcher missed the ball!

With a miracle second chance, Trout walks to force in a run, leaving it up to Ohtani to be the hero, but he grounds out to let the BJs win.

That was an epic game. Statistically, the Angels win most of those. I mean the BJ squibblers during their big comeback? And how often are Trout and Shohei coming up to bat like that with the bases loaded and both are going to fail to hit the ball out of the infield? C’mon.

I was at the game.

Man, I was really enjoying myself those first 5 innings … Club Level on 3B side.

Anyway, this loss is on NEVIN. Totally and completely. I was not even mad at Detmers when he gave up the Grand Slam to Chapman. In fact, I called it, in a way. I said to my brother during the break for Vlad’s injury that you had to pull Detmers… EVERYTHING pointed to that being the right move… He was facing a powerful lineup and was not likely to shut them out completely. You knew they would get runs, so the key was to limit the damage. Nevin should have realized that..

Detmers was at around 86 pitches in the 6th. Once the first two guys got on he should have been pulled. The heart of the order was coming up, with Vlad Jr. and Chapman — two right handed power bats against the lefty Detmers. Nevin should have had Wantz warmed and ready to face those guys if anybody got on. And once Detmers loaded the bases with NO OUTS, there is no way in hell Nevin should have let him pitch to the RH bat Chapman who had been hotter than a firecracker in the series, hitting over .400 with power..

The one outcome you could simply not allow was the Grand Slam there… And the fresh RH arm was alot less likely to surrender that than a tired, lefty in Detmers. Again, I am not second guessing. Prior to the Chapman AB I yelled out “Pull him Nevin.”

Nevin is an idiot. Second to our crappy bullpen and a stubborn Perry Nevin is the thing that is holding us back from being a really good team.

I share your frustration, but the choice between a tiring closer and an utterly crappy bullpen is not one that will often lead to good results. The solution is to DFA Loup/Tepera and try out new guys who might be better. Short of that, start planning for 2024.

Understood. You do realize you would have likely gotten Tepera and not Wantz as the reliever. Does that make you feel any better?

No reason you could not have used Wantz there.

The reason is “Management” trusts Tepera more than Wantz despite whatever the eyes tell those that watch. Let’s hope that changes going forward.

Yep.

But like I said, no reason they could not have used him in that spot with bases loaded in 6th. In fact, they did bring him in shortly after. Just too late to make a difference…

BJ squibblers sounds dirty…or maybe a chain restaurant/sports bar in Canada.
