Jared Walsh is making progress but they still don’t know when he will be back. Jo Adell just keeps hitting homers.
The voting over at MLBTR seems to favor Griffin Canning as the Angels sixth starter. Here is a Perry Minasian interview.
Jake Odorizzi will miss the rest of the 2023 season because of an arthroscopic shoulder procedure. The Phillies will lose Darick Hall to thumb surgery. Omar Narvaez will miss eight or nine weeks due to a bad strain to his left calf. Travis D’Arnaud is on the seven day concussion IL while James McCann is now back from the ten day IL. Zach Davies has a strained left oblique muscle. Jonathan Loaisiga is on the 15 day IL with elbow soreness.

Facing our draftee Patrick Corbin tonight. Needless to say we need to take care of business.
Man. If only Arte had shown some commitment to winning and we’d signed him. Sure, he said he wanted to sign with an East Coast team, but I don’t believe first hand information, only friend of a friend type stuff. If Arte had just offered him a little more money we’d be enjoying all the greatness Patrick Corbin has been providing. Four strait seasons of a WHIP over 1.4 and league leading hitability for only an average of 22M a year. And JUST 35 million next year!
There is no contract more deserving to be the first “If Arte really cared about whining he’d just get it done!” of the modern Halos fan wank fest. Also also totally champion failed and didn’t sign Strasburgh either… oh the magic that could have been….
I say we beat him tonight, but if we sad donkey it hard enough maybe we find a way to lose.
I have no problem with sweeping a “poor”, or not so good team, starting tonight.
Walsh has no timetable for returning as his issues with sleeping and headaches continue. This team misses his presence in the line-up is true, but we miss his stellar defense. Jared, if you our “Mail” then know this dude, you are missed and we are getting headaches too wanting you to return.
What can y’say?
The offense is superior, and reasonably deep. The rotation needs some tweaks, but Canning and Silseth might be that, and it looks otherwise competitive.
But, yes, the bullpen is a mess, and could make this team a 50/50 club until it’s reinvented. Not even an I-told-you-so – just a full-on drunken skip into an obvious mousetrap.
It was a visibly nagging problem last year, it was a chronically unaddressed problem in the offseason, it was a spooky-bad problem in spring training. One-year-wonder Moore and control-plagued Estevez weren’t solutions, they were whiteboard post-it notes by Minasian saying “I was here”.
Fix the bullpen, and this might be a postseason club. For a team that has had too many problem areas to count in recent years, that’s a step in the right direction. But finish the friggin’ job, Perry.
Too early for a trade or three to enhance the BP? I think not. As we all know, dropping games in April count the same as dropped games in September.
Sure, just tell me which MLB team is shopping a relief pitcher you consider to be quality and tell me who you think we are trading for him and we’ll get right on that here on April 10th.
Yeah, obviously most teams probably aren’t champing at the bit to sell off quality players on April 10th, but we could (and should) overpay if necessary.
Overpay with what?
Uhh, Money? 😁
I don’t think we can trade straight money for a reliever.
If Arte actually cares about winning and Perry isn’t stupid then yes, we totally can, even though no, the rules say we can’t. Not the type of guy who would end the weeping at CtPG.
OK. Who? And who? Just saying “we’ll overpay”. What does that change? Which GM is trading a closer in April? What’s the plan here?
CRod is down again with a hurt shoulder. Eric Torres ( BB, WP & 4! HBP’s in 1/3 of an inning) & Ben Joyce ( 4 BB’s in the rest of that inning) both imploded on Saturday . After being perfect in Spring , Jacob Webb has a 19.29 ERA in 3 appearances.
So Is it time to move Silseth and/or Bachman to the Pen?
After watching yesterday’s blowpen I’m not seeing a lot of options down on the farm.
Bachman and Silseth need to do their jobs, learning to be starting pitchers, right now. This is yet another reason a GM doesn’t panic like his balls are on fire on April 10th. Panic isn’t a plan, and we wanted a plan on the farm, right? We’ll likely get a less sexy arm from AAA if things get desperate so soon.
I still like Joyce as an ASAP call-up, last Saturday’s 4 walks notwithstanding.
All that being said, it would be nice to get more than 5 innings from our starters.
People on this site are gonna be so pissed when the first call up is Jhonny Diaz or what ever…
NO dude we need more TIME to assess the situation… Don’t panic. Don’t push the panic button. The world is coming to an end. The sky is falling. Arte is Evil. It is all Arte’s fault.
Everything is fine. I am not going to panic. Everything is fine!
Good for you man. It’s great to see you untuck yourself, calm down, and wait to get a plan together instead of blustering some half baked rage and panic casserole all over yourself demanding sweeping changes when the second week of the season isn’t even over. Cool as a cucumber.
Slightly surprised that Trout hasn’t taken a breather yet, but considering how well he’s playing, that’s likely a good thing.
Jose Saurez is the living embodiment of ‘Mid’ so since his last start was atrocious, we should get something serviceable this time around. Is a solid 6 innings too much to ask for?
.344 2hrs 7rbi’s
💪 💪 💪 💪
You realize numbnuts that any pictures and stats of offensive players you post will probably be equaled or bettered by a current player on the The Angels roster.
The problem is bullpen pitching Twofus.
just not David Fletcher, who’s our SS.
😠 😢
Sick burn. Real top notch stuff there 💯
Really?
Not only do you live too much in the past, but because of your ignorance, you cant even get the past correct.
To date , the player that has started the most games at short for the Angels this season is….. Wait for it….. Gio Urshela! who is now batting a cool .364 in 35 PA’s
So like I said our problem isn’t offense.
So Nostradamus, what players should the Angels get in the future? Anyone can use hindsight.
Somebody once told me it’s 20/20. I’m sitting on pin and needles waiting to hear what the future beholds. My fingers are crossed
Can’t see anything. No IIWPM.
?resize=500%2C278
Sorry, but we didn’t beat a good team. This is counter contrarian to the breakdancing Robot who I’m sure we’ll see if we beat the Nationals. Hey, they’re a bad team!
I was getting worried about you, haven’t been here for a few days. That’s right, you only show up for the L’s, that’s cool bro. I gotta say tho, your troll game is very mid. I can appreciate a good troll but what your bringing right now is very uncreative and quite frankly I’m a little disappointed. A post about Adames stats? I might be upset for a week. Did you know Babe Ruth once hit 60 HR’s in a season? You can hit us with that mic drop next time. Please step your game up. I believe in you and know you can do it with a little more effort. Maybe give Jake Paul a call. He has a much better understanding on how to push buttons. Cheers mate 😃🍻
You do realize we also have community guide lines to abide by?
We’re not arguing our points at George Christie’s biker bar in Ventura (former Ventura Chapter Hell’s Angel’s President as seen on the History Channel).
No idea what you’re talking about. I’m not one for bar fights (maybe a you thing) All I did was offer words of encouragement. Of all the people to get defensive for no reason, you are the last person I would except this from. You make statements looking for a reaction then get upset when it happens? I am not making any threats and truly wish you the best but let’s not act naive. If you want to continue with your shtick that’s perfectly fine. All I wanted was a little more effort
It is True Toots. thatWe haven’t won a series from a good team yet considering the Mariners suck giant Elephant turds this year.
Wait. You can see his comments?
I dont see them But I can feel them.
All I see is a blank space where an IIWPM should have been.
PETA wants to end the Rally Monkey…Angel fans live in the most interesting of times. Evil Arte with all of his evilness, now this. Best course of action would be to check in with Shohei’s mom. Does Shohei want the monkey to stay or go?
Free the Monkey or Shock the Monkey, Free little Timmy Loup’us, Free Walsh from his bed, Free 2002 from GhostGuests’ dank basement, Free us all from this eternal pain and suffering as Angel fans.
https://www.peta.org/media/news-releases/following-mlb-rule-changes-peta-calls-on-angels-for-one-more-ending-the-rally-monkey-tradition/
You know, I have become ambivalent to the Rally Monkey the last few years.
But after this PETA bullshit story that should show it before every bottom half of the inning.
Or continuously come back in the bottom of the 9th and win after the pen blows it…or just redo the 2002 season.
Alot of those people need to get a life. Protesting animal testing/cruelty is one thing, complaining about a fun video shown at ballgames is just idiotic.
Just don’t let em know about the rally cat. It’ll be our little secret
100%. Thought that monkey was pretty played out…. now I’m like “NEVER LET THAT MONKEY TOUCH THE GROUND!”
cubs and tigers are next
Oh Boy I cant wait for the Atheist groups to start targeting us.
Lucifer was an Angel, so I’m sure we won’t offend anybody or any soul
Well with all the crazy shit that happens to this team somebody sold their soul for that 2002 Trophy.
Crazy shit was happening to this week well before and after the 2002 Trophy.
Obviously that deal had a short lived expiration period
The key for the Angels today is “Hocus Pocus” by Focus. Have some fun. Yodel when the world expects you to sing. Whip out your flute and get down so hard in a samurai battle helmet that you’re barely conscious of the stinging in your palms from the thousand high-fives.
https://youtu.be/NGaVUApDVuY
Ron Burgundy jazz flute? That’s baby making music….
https://youtu.be/C-EUaS2m3bs
Never seen the movie. It was a nice touch to have Burgundy scat under his breath while he was playing just like jazz pianist Oscar Peterson always did.
Oscar Peterson ref. Ten points! Cannonball Adderly next square.
Listen to some Art Pepper yesterday…didn’t know much about Cannonball Adderly……but I think I found an Angel theme song Sack O Woe
https://youtu.be/N45hYXNu12o
Hah!!! Ten points! Sack o Woe…. the sad donkey theme song….
Sam Jones and Louis Hayes…. the beating heart of both Adderly and Peterson. Dope.
Canadian Jazz Festival piano players for $800 Alex
The whole game was on the line last night, with Ohtani up, and he just needed a hit to win the game.
I was thinking “well you said you wanted to win, so do it”.
I guess since he didn’t come through, he’ll have to admit “well, it isn’t Arte’s fault after all” and he’ll sign an extension with us later today.
They aren’t gonna release Loup or Tepera today so whose gonna put on their big boy pants and GTFO of here before this next series gets going?
No? Didn’t think so.
i blame Nevin and thought he’d be gone by 2pm
the last time we panicked we won a few ballgames. Sweeping Washington will make us giddy again.
Well let’s have a group meetup at the nearest bridge. Obviously we’re in must win mode for the rest of the season. It’s do or die time fellas
Total. Girthy. Must. Win.
Need to put on our big boy pants, it’s all hands on deck, time to panic, we got to win them all from now on out. Let’s go Angels!!
Nothing goes together like big boy pants, panic, and victory.
Yup except for Designer Guy who big boy pants are always optional.
I love it when a plan comes together….cue A-team theme
The Angels scored 23 runs in this three-game series against the TOR BJs. How many runs were your favorite Angels responsible for creating?
Remember, players get credit for which part of the run they were responsible for creating. If Trout hits a double and then Ohtani hits an RBI single, Trout gets credit for 0.50 runs by making it to second on his double, and Ohtani gets credit for 0.50 runs for creating the hit that sent Trout the rest of the way home.
5.00 Trout
4.50 Renfroe
3.50 Ohtani
2.50 Rendon
2.00 Urshela
1.25 Rengifo
1.25 Ward
1.00 O’Hoppe
1.00 Drury
0.25 Thaiss
0.25 Fletcher
Using this same partial-credit methodology, let’s rank the Angel pitchers. For the pitchers, however, we take the number of runs they are credited for surrendering and divide that by how many batters they faced. (# of batters faced is in parenthesis).
Also, the stats for the pitchers are year-to-date.
0.00 Quijada (11)
0.02 Ohtani (48)
0.05 Sandoval (44)
0.05 Wantz (17)
0.08 Estevez (20)
0.11 Anderson (47)
0.16 Detmers (45)
0.17 Herget (15)
0.19 Barria (25)
0.21 Moore (11)
0.23 Tepera (10)
0.26 Suarez (22)
0.27 Loup (12)
0.29 Davidson (7)
I actually hope the offense gets out to some big leads and then they bring in Loup, Tepera, Barria etc… get some mileage on them, see if they can get stable or fall apart in lower leverage test innings. Same with Suarez and Tucky D’s (probably) starts this series.
Realistically, this week, next week, then start having meetings about who yields innings to whom and maybe calling up Canning, and a Weiss, Rosenburg, Garza, Webb, Diaz type for the pen…. who ever is hot.
100% agree. If these guys can’t get it done in low-leverage, low-stress situations, they need to think about cutting bait and rolling with the young guys.
I just want to get a larger sample size of innings with those guys without a huge risk so we get a better idea of how bad the bad is.
The Adell sitch makes me sad. Almost wish there was a need/opportunity/lineup spot for him with the parent club to prove conclusively, once-and-for-all, if he’s an inveterate AAAA hitter or a budding star who just needed an extra season or two to adjust his approach. Important to remember he’s the same age as ex-college players like Garrett Mitchell (seeing his first sustained MLB action this season) and Heston Ker-whatever… who’s still a Top 5 prospect in the Orioles system despite having a much-less-impressive minor league stat sheet than Adell.
More time in AAA won’t hurt him. He earned that bus ticket to the minors. If he’s really on to something, the results will continue. No need to rush him back up now because of a hot week. Even fat boy wasn’t fat boy on his first call up. Jo will get another opportunity eventually. I hope that whatever he’s working on is the correct formula. I mean why not? I rather have more good players then bad players. Maybe that’s just me tho.
no disrespect to what he’s done this past week but I think it’s easier to hit homeruns in Albuquerque than in Anaheim.
Of course it is. It’s still a better result then not hitting them. Personally, I think it’s a pretty cool story and will be checking the box scores tonight. You telling me that it won’t be dope if he does it again?
Yeah, sure, Coors field. But he’s still actually squaring up pitches…. a good sign for now, even better if he is still good in June.
I think we should give him another shot!!! 😄 😆
D Ackley
I think we should shoot you out of a cannon with no safety net below.
I think he already was, it would explain a lot.
That guy looks like he’s wondering where your IIWPM is and why anyone would listen to you if you’re too poon to put one out.
Who is this Adell you speak of? I vaguely remember a player by that name but I was told he is past it, that we are done with him, that we don’t want to see him again, that we can’t develop him, he’s a wasted draft pick and that he should be traded for a bag of balls.
So who are you talking about?
Offense is Not the Problem Twootshit.
How are his ABs when he is not hitting home runs? Defense?
Over the six game homer stretch he struck out 12 times in 30 plate appearances. You can’t have everything I guess.
Oh good grief! 🥶
Yeahhhh…. but the chicks are happy at least.
Weird to see so many injured across MLB so early.
Good morning people. Are we all done with the panic attack from yesterday’s board? I thought I was going to need a helmet with the way people were acting like the sky is falling. Anyways, did I mention that Adell went deep for the 6’th game in a row? He hit 2 diggers yesterday. So yeah, let’s trade him for some guy that pitches in the 6th for a couple of years. Obviously he is blocked for any chance here because Renfroe is signed for the entire season and injuries never happen to our outfielders…..like ever. Jo will never become a major leaguer and should just quit baseball now. Maybe get into a trade school while he’s still young enough to make something of himself
I’m happy that Adell seems to have made lemonade with those AAA lemons he got. From what I read, he is taking it seriously about swinging only at the pitches in the zone he is specifically looking for.
I hope that he has figured something out. It’s kinda pointless trading him now. The Angels probably lost a year plus rushing him up. Either he gets it or doesn’t. Only time will tell
That’s by far the best news. Here is what he is trying, here is why it’s working. Keep him doing that till we need an OF for a few games, could be great.
If this team had a bullpen they’d be 8-1, and cooking opponents. Perry needs to eat that $14 million spent on Tepera and Loup and find better guys or else this team in flounder around or below .500. It should contend for a WC but the bullpen will tank the starters and ruin the offenses’ morale. Perry is managing with his heart. He wants to win the clubhouse so he will trot out those two even if they suck because he’s trying to give them a heroic chance. But the prospects still aren’t ready. Did you see Joyce walk a whole team?
Joyce…. lost a no hitter… not gave up a hit, LOST a no hitter. That was amazeballs.
No matter how many times you repeat it they aren’t gonna just eat Loup/Tepera on April 10th. This is because it is a stupid idea, not because PTP has much love for those guys.
I’m not sure I’d rule it out. PTP has been seen shopping for players. While riding around on a train.
https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230406-australian-police-seek-pair-seen-with-platypus-on-train
Cheap Arte. Won’t even get that platypus a plane ticket.
lineup looks awesome with rendon, even with a floundering lamb.
his smile warms the cockles of my heart.
His smile says “I just might fk a guy up if he wants to fool around.” and it’s nice to know he’s tough with someone besides a teammate or Alex Curry in front of him.
Let Adell hit a whole bunch of homers and then trade the shit out of him.
They won’t get anything for him until he actually does it for the Angels.
This is likely true. Also, with 150+ games left for someone to get hurt, it would be nice to know Adell is a plane ride away with a .950 OPS and he can even fill in awkwardly in CF.
Actually, I wonder how bad his defense is right now….
Agree, after 2-3 dismal showings in the majors, AAA stats are just that
But unlike other GMs, Perry could probably only Trade Adell once.
Man, yesterday’s game was a lot of fun. Detmers shutting out Toronto’s explosive offense for 5 innings while his offense built up a big lead. Renfroe, Ohtani, O’Hoppe going yard. The Angel pitching meltdown and Toronto’s big comeback (although several key BJ knocks were just squibblers).
The Angels score four runs in the 8th and 9th to tie the game!
Two outs in the tenth with the bases loaded with Trout and Ohtani due up, and Trout ends the game with a pop up to the catcher, but wait! The catcher missed the ball!
With a miracle second chance, Trout walks to force in a run, leaving it up to Ohtani to be the hero, but he grounds out to let the BJs win.
That was an epic game. Statistically, the Angels win most of those. I mean the BJ squibblers during their big comeback? And how often are Trout and Shohei coming up to bat like that with the bases loaded and both are going to fail to hit the ball out of the infield? C’mon.
Did you see Trout curse himself out after he struck out in the ninth inning? Two guys were on base and Trout represented the tying run. Man, he wanted to win that game badly.
I know. The whole team looked like they expected to punch through and win… which is good, even if they didn’t this time.
I was at the game.
Man, I was really enjoying myself those first 5 innings … Club Level on 3B side.
Anyway, this loss is on NEVIN. Totally and completely. I was not even mad at Detmers when he gave up the Grand Slam to Chapman. In fact, I called it, in a way. I said to my brother during the break for Vlad’s injury that you had to pull Detmers… EVERYTHING pointed to that being the right move… He was facing a powerful lineup and was not likely to shut them out completely. You knew they would get runs, so the key was to limit the damage. Nevin should have realized that..
Detmers was at around 86 pitches in the 6th. Once the first two guys got on he should have been pulled. The heart of the order was coming up, with Vlad Jr. and Chapman — two right handed power bats against the lefty Detmers. Nevin should have had Wantz warmed and ready to face those guys if anybody got on. And once Detmers loaded the bases with NO OUTS, there is no way in hell Nevin should have let him pitch to the RH bat Chapman who had been hotter than a firecracker in the series, hitting over .400 with power..
The one outcome you could simply not allow was the Grand Slam there… And the fresh RH arm was alot less likely to surrender that than a tired, lefty in Detmers. Again, I am not second guessing. Prior to the Chapman AB I yelled out “Pull him Nevin.”
Nevin is an idiot. Second to our crappy bullpen and a stubborn Perry Nevin is the thing that is holding us back from being a really good team.
I share your frustration, but the choice between a tiring closer and an utterly crappy bullpen is not one that will often lead to good results. The solution is to DFA Loup/Tepera and try out new guys who might be better. Short of that, start planning for 2024.
I think we would just plain release those guys.
I meant tiring starter.
Understood. You do realize you would have likely gotten Tepera and not Wantz as the reliever. Does that make you feel any better?
No reason you could not have used Wantz there.
The reason is “Management” trusts Tepera more than Wantz despite whatever the eyes tell those that watch. Let’s hope that changes going forward.
Yep.
But like I said, no reason they could not have used him in that spot with bases loaded in 6th. In fact, they did bring him in shortly after. Just too late to make a difference…
Anyone know the last time Wantz pitched?
BJ squibblers sounds dirty…or maybe a chain restaurant/sports bar in Canada.
BJ Squiblers! Come for the ten dollar Kool Aide, stay for the fun!
