LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Quarterfinals

USA beat Colombia to make it to the quarterfinals.

Happy birthday Max Stassi! The Angels are among the 14 teams who may end up having their games broadcast by MLB due to the infamous bankruptcy filing of Diamond Sports Group. The Angels only came in tenth on this list of the most valuable MLB teams. I wonder what Arte thinks of that. “Number 10” used to be Viet Nam slang for the worst.

The Twins hired Hernan Perez on a minor league deal. The Marlins selected Garrett Hampson and placed Anthony Bender on the 60 day IL in a corresponding move. The Rays selected Trevor Kelley and placed Andrew Kittredge on the 60 day IL in a corresponding move.

Injured List

Angel Zerpa of the Royals went on the 60 IL with a left shoulder tendinopathy. Sam Coonrod has a high grade lat strain and they don’t know exactly when he will be back. Freddie Freeman has “a mild hamstring issue” and exited the World Baseball classic.

In the Angels farm. So unpossible. “Strong legs” just means the rickets from starvation has passed and “new pitch” means the line he repeatedly yells while sitting on the street asking for change.

It’s pretty wild how Angels-centric the WBC is. Ohtani the MVP of Team Japan, Trout the MVP of Team USA, Sandoval the ace of Team Mexico. Even the outperforming Team Italy had the Fletcher Bros.

USA has a real challenge with Venezuela, but isn’t an Ohtani-Trout battle the final the world wants?

Team Japan is wicked though. That is one stacked sandwich. And the Tokyo crowd is nuts for baseball. Love those trumpeteers.

Teams should highly recommend to their players to show restraint unless it is the last game of the season. It’s gotten to be a bit much that teams do this every game on a walk-off in the MLB.

Baseball players sustain injuries in the weirdest ways. I can’t remember an injury to an NBA player under all the oddball circumstances I’ve heard of ballplayers doing it. Must be hard to keep muscles properly stretched and warm with so much downtime in the game.

We took Sam Bachman instead, meet Andrew Painter of the Philies who was taken #13 in the 2021 MLB Draft guess who was #9 yep, Sam was! Top rated pitching prospect in the 2022 season, also Harris Co TX Puppy Eater Hunter Brown who was a 5th Rd draftee. We should trade everybody we have since WE HAVE THE WORST FARM SYSTEM IN MLB HISTORY and at least Detroit fired everybody last summer including GM Al Avila last summer.
BYE!!!!! 💪 💪 💪

he won’t be the top pitching prospect when he gets TJ surgery in the next month or so.

Really though, I hope you find peace in life, seems like you wake up every day mad about something.

THIS was the draft move I personally disliked the most of late. I really liked Painter in the draft.

BUT I understood that we wanted COLLEGE pitchers who would be up faster. Painter being very tall and 17 pointed to him likely taking a little while to get it all together. I am about 100 times smarter than the average Toot, but I still had no way of knowing he’d have so little trouble developing. So, while I was annoyed when we took Bachman while Painter was still on the board, I also understood that the team had a plan that they were sticking to and that meant NOT taking high risk teenagers to solve a present lack of pitching prospects.

Of course, now, I shake my head at the good luck the Phillies (who had to do very little to “develop” Painter thus far) had with this pick. But hindsight is intelligence for stupid people and the folks who think an FO is supposed to strategize to deal with luck are spoiled children. These same idiots would currently be trying to figure out who to blame for Painter’s arm snapping this past week.

The Pitcher Draft and how we see it, and how we complain about it (or don’t) is a solid example of why you’re kind of lame and I am not.

That, and I can actually compile and publish a IIWPM for people to pick apart. When is the IIWPM coming out? You seem really into studying draft mistakes. Are you going to include a list of the guys you want to draft this summer? I can’t wait to see it.

It’s simply bizarre that one would post this after we learn that Painter has a sprained UCL and has been shut down for 4-6 weeks. Right-handed prep pitchers drafted in round #1 have a pretty terrible track record in the draft, in part due to injuries like this. The ones who hit often hit big, but the chance of that hit is rather low probability.

Plus, if you’re going to draft a high ceiling prepster, you need a strong development system to nurture him. The Angels don’t have that.

Those who remember my 2001 draft analysis will remember I was of two minds about Bachman relative to the alternatives, seeing him as very much a future reliever. “Safe” college starter picks for the Angels in the 2021 draft were guys like Ty Madden, Kumar Rocker, Jordan Wicks. Riskier upside plays in the same category were guys like Gavin Williams and Sam Bachman.

The stories on Bachman and Painter are not written yet. Both could wash out from injury, both could make a difference on a Major League roster. And yes, like many, I think Painter gets TJ before he realizes any sustained impact in the MLB.

Personally, I’d still rather have taken Painter because he’s “my guy” and I took a shine to him. I thought he looked like an ace down the line. But if the team’s plan is to get college arms that will get up to the bigs and help in 1-3 years then I understand Bachman and the rest of that draft. Sitting there, June of 2021, there’s no way I can say now that I had any reason to believe Painter would be MLB ready in 2023 sometime. And now he isn’t.

People forget their own bitch so much around here. I also love how worked up folks can get about a pile of names they have never heard of a few hours before and will forget a couple weeks after…

“We hah no pidgerz! Syz dum devoid of pigeon! Can’t develerp a Polaroid! Duh young ones wan sir vive duh starvation and floor sleeping! All urr guys git hurdt! Trout an Ohtaner will leaf! Ah noooo! (Heavy breaths through mouth) Drerft lanky 17 year old nerrw!” Sound about right CtPG guys?

I’m with you in that, given how many random 10th rounders turn out to be useful, I’d rather not even talk about a draft till a few years after it. Even more so international signings. Even a guy whose dick we’ve all been standing on for years now like Kevin Maitan is still just 23…. so a year older than a college draft pick. PTP’s guys, be they crap or geniuses, have had about a year to work with most of these players. It’s probably better to judge entire draft classes than cherry pick single players. It’s best to just wait and see what shakes out.

Of the prep guys that draft, I was hottest on Jobe… but turns out so were many other teams. He gets chosen #3, when many thought he might slip to the zone Painter was chosen. I still think his ceiling is huge, but now like Painter, he’s down for months, with back issues, like…Sam Bachman last year.

I understood the Bachman pick then and still do. But in general I’m pretty risk-averse, and think the Angels, who seem to be suspect in both the medical and developmental depts, ought to be as well. The rest of that draft was reasonably cautious – all pitchers or no. But if I was in the draft room that day, if I learned of my #1 target Kumar’s bonus demands (and Arte’s constraints), I probably would have pulled the lever on Ty Madden or Jordan Wicks, hoping for mid-rotation regulars in 2-3 years.

And I’d be ok with Madden or Wicks in AA as they are today.

I liked Jobe too. My actual wish for that draft was Jobe/Painter in the first round and then all college arms and a couple catchers for the rest of the draft. I figured both those guys are pretty special, so let’s go for an ace, then get those fast developing lower risk/ceiling arms.

Considering that my “draft all pitchers” crazy idea actually happened I can’t really complain that they went for an older arm in Bauchman.

Just curious if you still remember where you had Pete Alonso, Shane Bieber, and Matt Thaiss going in 2016? Why did the Angels pass on both of these guys (Alonso, Bieber) in your opinion? 🤔 🤔

Let’s take a look at Dombrowski’s magnificent track record of MLB pipelines. Both the Red Sox and the Tigers were certainly stoked on the farms they had been left with after he was gone right?

Since taking over his system has produced magic in the form of household names like JoJo Romero, Cristopher Sanchez, Conner Seabold, Spencer Howard, Ramon Rosso… Johan Rojas is basically Jordyn Adams. Bryson Stott may be OK someday. Alec Bohm’s got some sweet ass 0.3 WAR for his career so far.

Enyel De Los Santos is a good pen arm. But we spit on those. Oh, and he’s an Indiguard. Cole Irvin’s been OK…. oh wait, he’s on the Orioles. Nick Maton’s showing OK promise…. oh wait, he’s a Tiger now…. Mickey Moniak? Logan O’Hoppe has progressed well…. oh.

Connor Brogdon is solid pen. Wait, Rafeal Marchan. His 60+ games of faint glory bloomed under Dave’s watchful eye.

So Painter, who is hurt now because somehow Arte, and….?

Why are we hung up on Dombrowski? Is it because Mick Abel might be as good as Chase Silseth at some point? Because 19 year old Justin Crawford looks pretty cool?

Where’s the beef?

Where is the IIWPM?

We have nobody in MLB’s Top 50 Prospects list including Ryan O’Hoppe and Zack Neto who was drafted 30 minutes ago, so we won’t know how good he is until 2025 at the earliest. The Eppler Regime absolutely killed us for at least the next 2 yrs. You people all related to Roger Lodge and Trent Rush? Watching the Puerto Rico game last night and seeing Díaz go down like that in the celebrations — yikes. Too soon for Angels fans who have that fear of home plate celebrations.

He was a little gassed at the end and got into some trouble. But that’s fine for mid-match. He’ll build up and be ready for opening day.

He’s going to be un-hittable this season.

Shohei, Sandy, and Trout sure have been the highlight of this tournament.

We gotta get these dudes to the postseason.
