LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Lifetime Ban?

MLB lifted the lifetime ban on former Braves General Manager John Coppolella. Apparently, in his case, five years is long enough if he says he is sorry. Supposedly, Don Mattingly remains the bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays while he acts as an advisor to the Nashville Stars ownership group.

The Angels announced the signing of outfielder Brett Phillips and designated Austin Warren for assignment in a corresponding move. I know we have been talking about Joe Lacob for about a week now, but here is an article about him that is not behind a paywall.

The Giants signed free agent right hander Luke Jackson to a two year deal. He missed 2022 due to Tommy John surgery. The Giants also made a trade, acquiring lefty Erik Miller in exchange for righty Yunior Marte. Right hander Brent Honeywell will sign with the San Diego Padres. It’s a major league deal, although it is kind of hybrid in nature.

The Brewers made their one year deal with Wade Miley official. Tim Locastro has a minor league deal with the Mets, who continue to express frustration with Carlos Correa. Correa and Bauer should get minor league deals with spring training invites, I figure. A lifetime ban is clearly not going to happen, unless it is a ban by disinterest on the part of the teams.

Catcher P.J. Higgins cleared outright waivers and elected free agency. Fernando Abad has a minor league deal with the Rockies.

Nate Colbert, all time home run leader for the San Diego Padres, died at the age of 76.

I love this bit from the sub-headline at mlb.com…

“Carlos Correa has a 6-year deal to remain with the Twins, pending a physical

I put those last 3 words in italics since they’re the most hilarious.

I still hold out (Vague) hope that we could trade for Tim Anderson, but I think the ChiSox are going to make a face value run at……….something this year. Anderson would probably cost us Rengifo/Fletcher and at least one ML starter (Sandoval?). Too bad a price dump trade seems to not be in the cards.

Just spit balling, of course while anti-social distancing.

Anderson could very well be in play at the trade deadline. By then we’d know how badly we actually need a SS.

To spite all the begging and bitching I don’t think there are any SS out there that are worth the juice right now…. and yes, I even mean Kim. But if we really need one as the season moves along we’ll be in position to trade for one.

And will all of this be part of your IIWPM that we are all still waiting for? Do you need a link to the original post to make sure you’re following the same rules we all did? We can’t wait to see how your unique perspective, non-standard intelligence and extremely blessed heart solve all these issues you keep bringing up. I’m sure we will all see how stupid these people you have a problem with are once we see what a real manbrain can come up with. Please, we are so hungry for your plan. Please, let us know if there’s anything we can do to help you get this done so we can all see that you’re not all hat/no cowboy. There’s just no way you are just a bag of old piss. Post soon.

From what I’ve read, and keep in mind I get a lot of my news from financial sites/networks, the issue with Correa and the Giants came down to insurance. The Giants insurance company wouldn’t insure that contract.

The fact the Mets wanted a yearly physical also makes me think insurance was an issue there.

So either the Twins insurance company will or they think the risk is reasonable enough to take.

This is what my guess was for the hang up with these contracts. I was guessing that Cohen proposed Correa camp either drop the price to cover the extra premiums or kick in a percentage of his salary into a large policy making The Mets the beneficiary..

I agree. They were already talking about trading, and now they sign another one.
I’m hoping that the reason Perry didn’t sign Cueto is because he is targeting a better move. Or a SS. I might be hoping a long time….

Earlier in the off season I posited that a great way for the Angels to get a SS would be to sign Taillon or somebody similar then deal Sandoval.

I got blasted pretty hard.

But overall, that would cost less than signing a SS.

For a few weeks, I’ve been half expecting that Perry would sign Cueto, and then turn around and package Suarez with a few other pieces for a SS.

Good news for a few MLB teams. Correa will be available in a year or two via trade when the Twins, again, eventually go/stay belly up. This is what the Twinkies do folks. They tried to move Mauer for years after giving him a nice contract.

Correa back to the Twins on a 6-year $200M. I dont know too much about the leg but I would have been tempted to sign him on a shorter contract run.

6-years puts him to age 34. Again, dont know much about the leg but 6-years for a player his caliber much more doable.

I think there is legitimate concern about an ankle issue with a shortstop. Particularly at $33 million per year. But I agree I like the Twins deal better than the initial Mets deal.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

In a shocking development, fan likes the tail tucking desperate last resort deal that an All Star shortstop signed for 1/3 less length/value than he would have gotten otherwise over the much huger contracts that went poof from major market teams.

Starts to wonder why this can’t happen more often and why not have his team be the one to sign such players.

2009 Angels HOF voting update

Napoli and Lackey still don’t have a single vote.
Abreu is at 20% and has enough so will appear on the ballot again.

Torii has 3 votes (2%) and Frankie has 14 votes (9.5%).
Looks like Frankie will make it to next year ballot and could see him eventually get in one day but Wagner will have to get in first. There’s a chance Torii rallies too.

Two others not 2009 – Street has 0 votes. And the former 1b coach who was a premium SS for many years from Venezuela has been cancelled and is down to 8%.

I looked askew at him after it was announced he had a hip condition that only long term steroid users have.

Which meant he fit in perfectly in bahstun.

I meant he signed with Boston as a catcher, then once the ink was dry he announced to the team that his hips precluded him from catching, so they renegotiated for a DH size contract.

If Napoli used steroids, he coulda better spent his money in my opinion.

Yes, but free agents get to pick where to go. I think Gitcho is right on the six man rotation not appealing to guys. Hard to justify the next contract based off 100 innings.

Add in the tax difference, cost of living, etc. and we’re at a big disadvantage.

i don’t think we sign an mlb-type OF till yesterday

im pretty satisfied with the pitching because everyone will step up bigly.

of course we need a stud ace 1A for the playoffs but I think there’s 50-50 chance that dude is in-house – Sandy or Reid I can easily see moving up a notch to elite status.

more pitching can wait.

Kneebody. A fantastic band that may or may not be satisfied with our pitching.

https://audiotree.bandcamp.com/album/kneebody-on-audiotree-live

I’m actually fine with our pitching. Seeing if Canning/Silseth/Davidson can make a go of it’s a good enough plan as I see it. It’s not like a guy like Wacha is a sure thing. Except for it’s certain he’ll cost a lot more money and block prospects. I’m also certain that Arte is selling the team, so I’m very certain it’s kinda stupid of me to expect him to spend to fill every hole. If we’re in contention and the options we have suck we can trade for a pitcher of meh quality.
