LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Top 50

Today is the day MLB Trade Rumors will release their list of top 50 free agents. The Fangraphs list has been out for a few days already. The Cardinals acquired minor league infielder Jose Fermin from the Guardians for cash considerations. The Rangers acquired Jake Odorizzi from the Braves in exchange for Kolby Allard. The Pirates claimed outfielder Ryan Vilade off waivers from the Rockies. For their part, the Giants claimed catcher Dom Nunez off waivers, also from the Rockies. The Phillies claimed a couple of waiver wire guys from the Giants. Luis Ortiz is a right hander and Andrew Vasquez is a left hander. The Mets claimed reliever Taylor Saucedo off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. Everybody is getting their 40 man rosters ready, now. There will soon be a wave of non-tenders to add to the movement.

Will Smith and Trey Mancini reached free agency. Drew Smyly declined his mutual option with the Cubs. Jorge Soler exercised his option and will remain in Miami for $15 Million. Eric Hosmer exercised his option to make $13 Million with the Red Sox. The Mets declined their mutual option for Mychal Givens. The Mets did re-sign their closer Edwin Diaz to a five year deal. The Mariners claimed left hander Gabe Speier off waivers from the Royals and outrighted a couple of guys.

Jose Ramirez, of the Guardians, underwent right thumb surgery to repair an ulnar collateral ligament injury he suffered in June. He’ll probably be ready for spring training.

In addition to the Operations Pitching Analyst, the Angels are also hiring an Administrative Operations Assistant. There are a ton of openings with other organizations listed on Fangraphs right now. (Phillies, Braves, Diamondbacks)

If no one signs Joc Pederson, does that mean the Giants have to pay him the QO? There is more than one player on that list not worth the QO, so why would a team do that? It is not like a team could ever get their money’s worth with a few of these choices the teams made.

That’s a long list. The more you sign the lower the draft pick given up, let’s get 6 of ’em or a half dozen of ’em, either way we rebuild without dealing with yooit’s.

Joc Pederson, really?

All it’ll take is a small commitment of a couple billion dollars over seven years…. that’s just $778,779 a day and an owner can rest easy knowing he will have the warm glow of getting his ass kicked by the Astros every year to keep him warm at night.

But he will have moved a lot of old men’s needles.

Outside of deGrom, the answer is…PASS.

We do need more IL days for our pitching staff.

deGrom is a difference maker, to me. The only one on that list. Yes, he is an IL risk.

Anthony Rizzo declined a QO? I thought he just declined the player option.

The only thing better than wondering where we’d be if 1/2 our offense wasn’t hurt is wondering where we’d be if 1/2 our offense AND our 40M ace pitcher weren’t hurt.

And, as an added bonus, we can be all chapped ass about the GM not having the foresight to have a shortstop, 1B, 3B and OF PLUS a spare ace pitcher waiting in the wings as depth.

Nimmo, Turner, Swanson…. I’d give up some kid potential for any of them. Just don’t think we can shell out the paycheck.

I remember so many complaints about “How could you trade our best pitching prospect?”
Put a fork in him.

Man, the Rays cut Brendan McKay…. there’s a top top prospect that the Angels also didn’t draft. I am still trying to figure out how Arte managed to injure him over and over again.

Japanese star Kodai Senga to sign w/LA Angels.

Is a headline I’d like to see

I tried to read about how qualifying offers work but it was too much for my brain to take in. Many levels, many penalties (loss of this kind of draft pick if such and such happens, loss of a different kind of pick if something else happens, differing types of compensation picks). So I won’t worry about it.

It used to be simple, sign someone elses QO lose 1st round pick, sign another a 2nd round pick, now beautiful minds (Mine is reasonably neutral attractive) are needed to figure it out.

If a losing team signs a QO I would like to see minimal recoupment being rec’d, just my two cents…..

That’s the spirit.

Now all you have to do is craft bold and aggressive comments about QOs and draft pick compensation followed by a declaration that PTP (who does read the stuff about QOs) is stupid. At that point your journey to awesome baseball fella is complete.

You also have to post random pictures of people who given a QO

I was just gonna post a picture of Joc Pederson because I am edgy and also love heavy platoon splits.

Tootsie doesn’t show up until after he is finished posting on his favorite team sites first. Mariners/Astros.

Then comes here to irritate the ones how can’t stop replying to him.

Perry the Puffer is stupid, no other way to explain foreiting a compensation pick for a guy like Syndergaard. Hell, even the Phillies did not trust him.

Someone yesterday told me that Ohtani’s agent intimated that Ohtani looks favorably on extending here even if he just nixed extension talks for now. I couldn’t find that. Anybody know if it’s true?

I hope it is cause extending him is better than losing him for nothing and trying to trade him when everyone knows we NEED to is also a crappy position to be in, though demand should be high enough to negate that sorta kinda.

That someone must be off his John Rocker. But reading between the lines from the comments made by Nez Balelo in Fletch’s linked story I got a strong sense that Ohtani really wants to stay in the new owners are on board. The comments from Ohtani’s agent sounded like someone who would be interested in resigning with the Angels if they got their Ownershit together by next season:

Shohei Ohtani’s agent told reporters on Tuesday that he was glad to see Minasian publicly douse any rumors of Ohtani being traded.
“I thought it was really good that he addressed all of you to let you all know that he and the ownership’s desire is not to move Shohei and to keep him around for the 2023 season,” Nez Balelo said. “So I’m glad he addressed it and we’re moving on.”
Balelo would not say whether any negotiations have taken place for a long-term deal. He simply said that they were happy to have the $30 million, one-year deal and they would see what happens if and when the Angels are sold.

It’s been very quiet,” Balelo said. “So we don’t know what’s going on. But it’s not our business. It’s Arte (Moreno) and his wife and the rest of the organization’s business, not ours. So I guess we would just have to wait to see who the group was that came in and if they had an appetite to move forward and see what they wanted to do with Shohei.”
The question looming over the Ohtani negotiations is whether the Angels can prove to Ohtani that they can build a winning team around him.Balelo said there’s hope.

“I think that the Angels are positioned in a great spot,” Balelo said. “I think that they may be a couple additions away from competing. I think health has always been an issue and if they could get over that hurdle, I think that there’s a lot of promise with the organization.”

IMHO This doesn’t sound like an Agent communicating his clients wishes to get out of Dodge. But instead wants to stay.

i think a big factor in Ohtani staying is simple – Mike stayed, and if it’s good enough for Mike……

however what makes me nervous is Ohtani has already said when he left Japan early “LFG – let’s put it ALL there and roll from there” He’s been through that once. If he liked it, he could want to do it again.

Either way, i will remain optimistic he signs LT here until he doesn’t.

Well, it’s not “he’s favorable” but it’s a whole lot better than “nope, don’t want to talk extension.”

Trouble is, as is often the case with the things CtPG guys likes to squeeze his thighs together over, Arte selling the team and when it happens are not entirely within his control. Someone has to want to pay him, and the owners have to meet and then agree. If and when that happens is largely up to other people and we have no idea of when NewOwnerz will even be around to snuggle Ohtani…. but we can be sure he has very little trade value by then.

So it still sounds like we will either be stuck with his huge contract or a QO draft pick. Yay. Nothing like trying to be the Yankees in an era where the Yankees aren’t even doing that anymore…. but with 1/5 the fanbase.

And remember jersey ads coming next year. FTX, who are also on the umps uniform, dropped out back in June.

Maybe Edison can come back?

Which will be the first team to sport a dick pill on their jersey?

Who will be the pharma marketing genius to slap some logo for what ever drug women use to regulate their mood swings on jerseys to take advantage of all those seething sports widow eye balls?

Sure, the game itself is getting boring as f***, but ad watch is heating up. Plus we may get more uniforms like those fashion abortions the Padres wore for a City Connect. The future…….

It’s fun to think about the new players the Angels may bring in but hard to get too excited. First, the front office will have their thoughts. Second, Arte or the prospective new owners will have theirs. Third, given the uncertainty, it’s hard to think too many marketable free agents will be excited about playing in Anaheim in 2023. The Angels are probably best situated to make trades and get guys that are already under contract. But we will see.

SI reports only 5 teams have better odds than us of signing him.

I’d be excited about Judge but i wont be excited by Gallo.
