LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Ditch Rendon

So you want to ditch Rendon. Here is the list of free agent third basemen. Who is both better and cheaper? I didn’t mention it yesterday, but Mike Trout owns the Rangers as well as the Mariners. Kurt Suzuki wool gathering. Jo Adell sucks. Trade him.

Yay! The Tigers and Angels now own the longest streaks in MLB without being in the playoffs.

I can’t help it: Mondou Athletics!

Giovanny Gallegos got a two year extension with the Cardinals.

Yeah. La Russa retired.

The Phillies made it into the playoffs, I guess.

I realize the links are short. I had a hell of a day at work yesterday. Sorry.

We can’t ditch Rendon. Not feasible.

What we can do is add a legit infielder with a good bat who can start at a middle infield spot or two well.

New guy + Fletcher + Rengifo on the bench + Soto in AAA = depth to cover one injury.

We get two and we’re screwed. Unless, perhaps, we keep Duffy around.

We have to keep Rendon around cause I love the suffering he causes some people on this site with his happy looking face and large sacks of money instead of sadness… he’s so fly.

Thats true. if Rendon really cared he would have broke his good hand on Winkler’s noggin when throwing the punch.

Maybe he went to Mutt Lynch’s in NPB and ate a way overpriced meal after the brawl with the GOINGTOTHEPOSTSEASONSEATTLEDIPOTO’S.
Meanwhile we’re staying home in our basements/dens after Wednesday…………THANKS ART**O

I would like to see Swanson as a Free Agent signing for next year. Sadly, though I just think we will not improve with Arte doing his Swan Dive and actually lowering payroll The more corners he cuts the more he takes with him, and this man is an expert at cutting corners.

With attendance dwindling and being the end of Ohtani’s tenure, he will be frugal.

Do any of you have any insights or guesses who may purchase the team?

I think I remember reading there are like 110 people in the world that can afford the team… so it will likely be Buyers not Buyer.

MLB.com is running an article about how a “coinflip” saved baseball in Seattle. Lame. It was the Angels Great Collapse of 1995 that saved baseball in Seattle.

Instead of reading that garbage at mlb.com – you might spend some time on “Chronicle of the Lads” … read this series by “the chronicler” and you’ll be right back into 1995 again… painful time but a really good read – the article is 17 years old and his page is how I found Halos Heaven and Rev – the rest is history for me.

It’s tough for me to assess Adell. On one hand, he’s done almost nothing in his time here. On the other hand, his management has been absolutely horrendous dating back to being called up too early a few years ago, and he’s had bottom of the barrel coaching surrounding him.

I don’t think he is a total loss cause at this point, but I’m not convinced Anaheim is the place he will turn it around either, sadly.

He has shown some improvement on defense, so there is that.

Also, he is still very young. I think I would like to see him as an everday starter in the OF for next season, maybe with a day off here and there. Basically let him play. He got jerked around early this season. Give him a chance to prove himself over a full season, if he can. But if we get to the end of May or early June and he is still hitting .220 with little or no power, then you can think about moving on from him. That’s my take on it.

I agree as well. I think he needs to be given a chance to play everyday and given consistent at-bats. Then if a significant enough sample size is achieved, FO can evaluate whether or not to move on from him.

The org certainly didn’t do him any favors, being jerked around but his performance didn’t help either, and so did the emergence (finally) of Ward. But I think 2023 is his last chance to prove he belongs.

I really wonder about his eye sight. He strikes out a lot and has a hard time picking up the ball in the outfield.

I actually wonder about the lights in the Big A over all. They changed them to fantastic wonderful Pharaoh approved rapidly blinking white lights a few years back and it seemed like it immediately F***ed up Upton and a few other guys seem to have had sudden suck problems, including Adell who didn’t have the same BIG issues in the MiLB. Maybe certain eyesight types/conditions + LED Wonderlight causes some people issues?

I know that’s been the case with some drivers, and also an issue for some people involved with film… just seeing things “off”. Maybe glasses would help.

That is an interesting theory. Trout seems bothered by the lights too, sometimes, when looking for a fly ball.

Seems like something to consider, by a team focused on player’s experiences and, say, wanting to win (cue the POBO conversation, ad infinitum).

As the season comes to a close, I’m quite happy with how the starting pitching has turned out:

Shohei – legitimate ace. Got even better as compared to 2021. Could have easily been a 20-game winner had he gotten run support in those miserable June/July/August games.
Sandy – deserves much more than the 6 wins that his record shows. Legitimate #2, a luxury at #3 if the team signs another ace (which will not happen)
Detmers – great year for a full season for a rookie. Expected up and downs, but overall a good pitcher than not. No-no was a big bonus.
Suarez – turned out who most thought he would be, #4 or #5 in the rotation. Flashes of good pitching mixed with bad starts. But that’s what a backend starter is most of the time anyway.

Bonus – Thor allowed the team to turn B-Marsh into B-Marsh with more power AND a legitimate catching prospect, something the Angels hasn’t had in years.

Angels also got lucky that majority of the starting rotation has stayed healthy throughout the year.

I wonder if they will stick with Davidson at #5 next year. And is Barria as the starter officially over?

Honestly…Davidson shouldn’t be on the team. And I’m not sure Moniak is any good.

Davidson needs someone to work him over and figure out how to avoid all those walks. He’d be a passable late rotation starter if he didn’t allow a free base runner at least once an inning.

Actually hes Mr. free passable right now.

Why is Moniak not any good? In SSS, he has played relatively well. It would have been interesting to see how he would have played if he didn’t get injured, as Nevin said he would have committed to Moniak playing everyday when he came over.

Agree about Davidson. For his part Moniak looks very iffy. I’d rather give Adell those early season AB’s next year than Moniak.

Good points

A couple counters:

  1. Davidson will not be the #5, he has been horrible. If he makes the team, he should be in the pen for mop up duty and spot starting only
  2. Thor has nothing to do with O’Hoppe. That trade was purely Marsh for O’Hoppe.

My point re: #2 was that it gave Perry more flexibility to be able to trade Marsh. Had there not been a rental pitcher who did well enough to be traded come the deadline, IMO, Perry might have been a little gun shy trading away a rookie outfielder who was supposed to be a mainstay of the OF for years to come.

I disagree, I really don’t think Thor and Marsh deals had anything to do with each other, but that’s ok!

Teams talk alot and its not uncommon for one separate deal to facilitate a second one. You know how it is . One thing leads to another and then Yada Yada Yada we trade our future centerfielder for a future catcher.

I’d love for that trade to be a win for both teams. Marsh is an easy guy to root for and I wish him well. O’Hoppe looks like just what the doctor ordered for our offense and catching needs.

That’s a nice starting 4.

Problem is we need two more at the MLB level and then probably 3 or 4 more in AAA to come in for the inevitable injury.

I do like having a lot of young guys without injury histories, though. Not to jinx them, but only Ohtani has had TJ on that list and none of the last three are huge velo guys.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

It’s too early for me to fully believe it is so, but I have been asking for years if someone (Angels or otherwise) would make a sharp turn away from “velo love” once they see how many innings (and dollars) are lost to injury in a rotation full of bolt throwers. Can a rotation that is 80% Tom Glavine Lite win? Can a team that goes that direction and avoids major injury more often (as those pitcher get better with age) build into a contender?

It looks like the Angels have sort of done that, at least built a start up version of it. Here’s what we have as of now…..

Suarez: 1.29 WHIP, 8.5 K/9, 2.7 BB/9
Sandoval:1.34 WHIP, 9.1 K/9, 3.6 BB/9
Detmers: 1.29 WHIP, 8.5 K/9, 3.2 BB/9

As far as the “meat and potatoes” of a rotation goes that’s not half bad. A team that competes just needs to make sure that’s the floor for our rotation and we have a good pen.

We’ll have to see what develops next year (and later) but I do think this is looking like a bit of a “plan”. Draft picks like Bush, Marauex, Olthorf, Silseth fit this mold too. I also think the large pile of “stuff” relievers who would add a severe change of pace following guys like this looks planned too.

Jaime Barria…. will they stretch him into a similar starter? He fits the same blueprint of “change up/curve/slider over velo/slider/TJS” that the three lefties fit. Then you just have to extend Ohtani and find a #6 – depth guyz…..

Hasn’t that ship sailed though? I would have thought they would start to pencil in Barria as a starter in July/August when it’s clear the Angels were out of the playoffs. But they gave spot starts to Davidson and freaking Mike Mayers instead.

Sailed? They have four months ahead of them to start working him towards this if he wants it.

“Angels also got lucky that majority of the starting rotation has stayed healthy throughout the year.” That was my sole goal for the season. I’ve never seen a franchise so cursed with it’s starting pitching for so long, this was a GREAT development. Let’s build on it.

Minasian has really backed himself into a corner with this roster. There is no easy way ro trade/sign our way out of it. At least we have GOAT 1.0 and 2.0 to keep us somewhat entertained. And yes, I’d prefer aging Arrenado over always-injured and aging Rendon, but I would also like to see pigs fly.

Adell hit a weak, seeing-eye grounder that should have been an easy out. He did get a hit and two RBIs, but his AB was less than what it appeared.

Senator_John_Blutarsky

If Adell and Moniak cut down the strike outs, their potential can be realized. Until then, if you strike out 35% to 40% of the time – you will not stick on the roster.

Besides Herget, is anyone in the bullpen worthy of keeping around next season?

Anyway, congrats to Marsh and Thor for making the playoffs after the trade.

The Angels now have the longest postseason drought in the MLB, tied with the Tigers.

Of course the previous leader of that only got off that leaderboard due to an added WC spot.

Welp, we’re likely gonna have Loup and Tepera like it or not.

Tepera, just based on this years numbers, is actually a keeper based on his 1.05 WHIP. His 1.1 HR/9 isn’t the end of the world either. Quijada’s in the same boat, but needs to get control like Fungo said. Barria’s a keeper too. Wantz and Weiss also have hit/walk/HR rates low enough to be useful pen arms.

One issue I do see though is that none of these guys in our pen are burners. Only Quesadilla and Weiss have a K rate higher than 9. We could use a little more bake to go with our shake. We do, however, have some high velo, direct to the pen relief prospects who will likely end up in Tempe this March. It’s also not impossible to find high K rate guys on the FA market who also have BB issues. If we can get one of them and fix them maybe we can luck into a Daniel Hudson…. who is yet another guy who took off like a mighty eagle as soon as he got away from the Angel’s bad Ju Ju.

True but I think we can get out of Silseth what I hoped for out of C-Rod.

Silseth is straight up nasty one time through the order. Imagine piggy backing him off Suarez then having him available for a couple of innings one other night of the week.

Suarez gets though 5 as a soft-ish tossing lefty. Silseth takes 6,7, and part of 8 as a flame throwing righty. Adjust bullpen usage from that point accordingly.
