LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Spell Zastryzny

The Angels optioned Jose Marte to AAA and brought up Rob Zastryzny a pitcher they got off waivers from the Mets on August 25, 2022. Here is this week’s “trade Ohtani” article, although there are also trades discussed for the other “underwhelming teams.”

Easton Oliverson, the boy who was injured falling out of a bed at the Little League World Series, is having a rough time. His parents are suing the manufacturer of the bed as well as the league.

The Kansas City Royals fired their President of Baseball Operations Dayton Moore. General Manager J. J. Picollo is now in charge of baseball operations.

The Mariners continue to lose. This time it is to the Athletics. They also selected Luis Torrens and designated Jake Lamb for assignment. The Braves outrighted relief pitcher Jay Jackson. The Giants outrighted outfielder Willie Calhoun. The Tigers intend to double down and hire a General Manager now that they have a President of Baseball Operations.

Six teams will pay the luxury tax. This includes the Mets, the Dodgers, the Red Sox, the Yankees, the Phillies, and the Padres. In further toe injury news, Nick Senzel suffered a season ending fracture of a toe in his left foot after colliding with the outfield wall. Sonny Gray went to the 15 day IL with a hamstring strain.

The Guardians selected Will Brennan and designated Ernie Clement for assignment. The Reds selected Michael Siani. The Rays selected Dusten Knight and placed Jaylen Beeks on the injured list. Garrett Whitlock of the Red Sox will have season ending hip surgery.

The Czech Republic defeated Spain to secure a berth in the World Baseball Classic.

Nice to see Trout can still lift a care at will. Obviously, his back is better.

Yeah, that’s what we want. Mike Trout changing tires unnecessarily.

SPELL IT? Try pronouncing. I though Patrick O’Neal was going into epileptic seizure when he started to say that name.

Minasian could stay if he became an errand boy for a POBO above him as KC is doing.

You mean Detroit? KC hasn’t made Picollo a POBO yet. This means that his job duties and powers remain the same as when he was just a GM. He is defenseless in the face of both his owner’s thoughts and the marketing department and incapable of making baseball decisions.

Now, if they announce he’s the POBO (or any other of the title variants that entails “real baseball person” status in an org) THEN he will be doing completely different work and will be able to totally ignore the wishes of the team’s owner and the interests of the people whose job it is to make the team money. For now Picollo is in the same powerless lacky hell as Chris Young in Texas. Really just an intern till he gets given his magical girthy POBOballs.

You’re right.

What do you think about Dayton Moore coming here?

I’d rather have Clayton Moore.

Meh. Having a POBO, to me, just means you have two guys splitting GM duties, one of which is older and more experienced. So I don’t really care that much if we get a POBO. No one around here ever lists all the teams with a POBO that suck… nor do we recognize that most POBOs are just GMs who did well, have a strong FO, and don’t want to lose staff to another team so everyone gets bumped up to GM, AGM, etc…. usually with a sweet “executive producer” style Vice President of…. title tacked on.

So if we get one, fine, won’t hurt. I just don’t think there’s any magic in it.

I’d rather have Jon Daniels than Dayton Moore. I may want Al Avila more than either of them. But really, looking at Theo Epstein, Chiam Bloom, Ben Cherington etc etc etc I think picking a POBO (or what ever an owner chooses to call him) is about as big a crap shoot as the draft. Hell, even the sexy exotic genius Farhan Zaidi is 284 and 248 in four years and that’s with his incredible fluke 2021. Because we’re a bunch of sadsack losers around here we are just hyper focused on the Rays current and past FO and the other two or three POBO types that are doing well.

I don’t care if the new owner decides to GM the team himself as long as he builds up the farm, scouting, pro scouting and player development like crazy. If he swears off ever signing a player to longer than 5 years and more than 200 million dollars, even if it’s St Shohei himself, even better. I’d like to try that “POBO”.

PS. Buy a few nice beach houses in Newport. Approach every guy involved with Cleveland’s pitching pipeline. Tell them you will give them a 20% pay bump and a free beach house if they come work for you, the owner/POBO.

Apparently. Because he’ll be starting tomorrow.

Jeez, I forgot that Willie Calhoun was originally from the Dodgers. I still remember pundits salivating over this guy finally making it to the show, how the Rangers were finally going to run the west.

@JeffPassan

Willie Calhoun is the prize for Texas. Bat will play in the big leagues. The question is position. At 2B now. Scouts worry he won’t stay.

Yeah they’ve dealt lots of “prizes” in recent years and the fairy dust wears off in their new org. It’s a massive strength of the Dodgers to create attractive trade assets they don’t mind parting with.

And so is winning 3 out of 4 over them.

It would be funny if the Mariners don’t make the playoffs despite an “easy” schedule to finish the season. KC, TX, OAK and DET – if those aren’t “playoff gimmes” I don’t know what is.

So much glee if the Mariners blow it again….. We also need Mitch Haniger to leave for an NL team, get healthy, and assplode into an MVP for the Marlins or someone.

Wouldn’t mind if they get to Verlander for a few earned runs (bringing him up over 2).
