The Angels struck first today against the hated Mariners. Mike Trout singled in the first and Shohei Ohtani doubled him in.
Ohtani pitched pretty well and the Mariners couldn’t seem to figure him out. He was throwing a lot of cutters early on and they couldn’t do anything with them.
In the fourth, the Angels mounted a major threat with men at second and third with no outs. Mike Ford popped out to third. Matt Duffy got an RBI on a groundout to third. Micky Moniak struck out. 2-0 Angels.
Mike Stefanino got a hit in the fifth inning and Livan Soto was sent in to pinch run for him. Luis Rengifo grounded into a double play to end that threat. Soto took over at short and Rengifo moved over to second base. Everybody kept striking out and hitting into double plays. Jaime Barria came in to pitch the eighth inning. Taylor Trammel hit a solo home run off him to make it 2-1 Angels. Abraham Toro hit a ground rule double to provoke a mound visit. Barria walked J.P. Crawford to bring up Ty France who grounded into a double play. Whew!
For the ninth, Aaron Loup came in to pitch. At least it wasn’t Tepera. The Angels got two line outs and a strikeout and won 2-1.

Well, if anyone here knows about the hard men of the OC….
I was at the game last night at 306, and Mia is right. Shohei pitching is a joy to watch!
Around the 1-3 innings, I thought this was going to be a “gutting-it-out†night for Ohtani. Mariners couldn’t hit him, but he couldn’t finish them off either. By the 5th-6th, he turned it up to another gear and just mowed through the lineup. Amazing!
And he’s involved in both runs of the game. He did it all!
I hope he gets to 40 HRs, sub 2.50 ERA, 15 wins, and 200 Ks. A lot of people thought it was impossible for him to replicate last season, but he might be even better this season, and he probably won’t win MVP because the novelty of Shohei has already worn off on some (and arguably, another player is having a better season at the plate.)
And his team isn’t making the playoffs which can be ignored by the writers for a year – but 2 years?

Yah. I didn’t feel like that was a “barely” win. That was toe to toe, don’t screw up or you lose big boy baseball. We beat a really good pitcher with a bunch of scrubs who did their jobs. Solid.
