LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: O’Hoppe Homer

Logan O’Hoppe homered for the Trash Pandas in their 4-1 win over Tennessee on August 5th.

Jarren Duran is giving Jo Adell a run for his money in terms of outfield struggles. Alex Cora says “He’s our center fielder right now. We trust him.” His little altercation with the fans was because they were throwing bottle caps at him.

Kevin Kiermaier may be available as an outfield lottery ticket this off season. The Cubs will probably release Jason Hayward to put another outfielder with injury issues on the free agent market.

It looks like Perry must have passed on Franmuil Reyes. He also apparently passed on infielder Rylan Bannon.

The replay officials called this runner safe because the catcher was blocking the plate. What do you think?

The Cleveland Guardians optioned Mustard to their High A affiliate. Mustard has struggled in 2022 being beaten repeatedly by both Ketchup and Onions.

Spoke with my client service rep today and advised I am giving up my 4 season tickets of over a quarter century. He wanted to know why. I pulled no punches. Told him that I cannot keep supporting a team without a solid baseball organization rather than a marketing-centric team. I told him it is not related to ticket cost or W-L. Instead, I I cannot in good conscious keep pouring money into a baseball organization where marketing guys like Carpino, Kuhl and Arte call the shots. I told him I’ve become incredibly uncomfortable with a team that doesn’t focus on scouting, international scouting, player development and strength and conditioning. Finally, we talked about the difference finishing 70-92 with a couple of superstars with bloated contracts and 70-92 with a young team full of developing players. I said I would rather watch and support the latter.

To his credit he was very understanding and knew baseball. He agreed to the extent he could while still being politically “correct” to his bosses.

He said things might change. But I’ve heard that too many times before.

I hope that things turn around organizationally and you can get your season tickets back sometime in the future. I would give anything to live in a MLB city where I could attend games regularly. You saw some good teams in that 25 years.

Your level of commitment to the team far exceeds most. 81 games worth of tickets (plus a preseason game or two) for 25 years is huge. The Angels should appreciate that and listen to your displeasure.

I didn’t renew my mini plan this year. Meant to, but just didn’t. And then the wheels fell off the season.

Not sure if I will next year. I’m leaning towards not. Not that my son is in school I have to avoid night games with him. And honestly I prefer to avoid night games on Friday and Saturday anyway.

My favorite games, by far, are Sunday afternoons. And those are never sold out and almost always have better deals on StubHub.

Agree. What Fan did in making that decision and then communicating the REASONS is probably the only thing that makes a substantive difference.

Sure we can stop going to individual games or buying gear, but that is small compared to season ticket holders dropping 4 seats for 81 games just like that,..

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  JackFrost

If they are anything like other sports franchises I have read about back in school, if they lose 500+ full season seats (which could totally happen) without re-selling them it usually becomes an issue.

So yeah. Angry season ticket folks unite!

What will really get heard is when, if they lose those seats, they reach out to people who had seats, or had smaller packages, and try to get them interested in buying back in. If most of those people scoff at the idea it becomes the type of thing PR companies get consulted on.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

It will. If enough people do it it’s pretty dang unignorable. Their next phase, not because they’re a horrible org or anything, just normal, will be to try their best to right the ship and see if they can get some wins and people come back. So even if people take action they’ll likely have to sit through that.

If that fails, and TV ad sales drop too, etc then maybe, finally, we will see some of the Carpino/Kuhl type guys leave.

I’d consider KK if he primarily kept Trout in a corner outfield spot. Get an elite glove in CF and the pitching looks better, too.

That said, it only works if the rest of the team is good with the bat. KK isn’t Squid in the box, but we can’t have multiple weak spots in the lineup.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

You know what might be cool down the road this winter? Kinda like what J Frost did re Ward Vs play off teams’ outfielders, we should do some comparisons. Like “over all OF”, say the 4-5 guys with the most OF innings on the play off teams compared to ours, or 2B, or SS, etc.

Maybe make a fake “play off team” that’s the average for all the play off teams for each position, bull pen, etc.

Then we could see things like…
How much better than Fletcher/Rengifo do we need to get at SS/2B? Can those two possibly perform near what’s needed?
Or how much better were the bench players?
How bad is our bullpen?
Are there areas of strength that can cover for areas we leave weak because you can only patch so many holes?

We’d be able to at least make an educated guess regarding things like needing KK or needing Brandon Nimmo etc.

I’m not sure if KK is a real starting OF any more, not just bc of the weak offense, but given his injury history. I would welcome him as a good glove first reserve OF, but I’d be bugged if he’s the starting CF

My first pass at reading the first line was “I raped your mom,” and then thought I needed another pass at it. Didn’t scan. Anyone with “I raped your mom” as the first line of a tattoo – even with flowery flourishes (so THOSE are buttercups?) – must already be in prison for multiple lifetimes.

Imagine that whole thing on your neck.

On second thought, don’t. (What’s that? Too late?)

Better fashion a shiv from bedsprings ASAP. Doin’ time in stir is rough enough, and don’t send me back to solitary, warden, I CAN’T HANDLE IT I TELLS YA!

(Sorry: flashbacks.)

And then worst of all (worst of all)
You never call baby, etc: the whole damned thing is one whiny complaint by the Foundations, the one-hit wonders. And it’s all too horribly apt for being an Angels fan. I mean, let’s face it. Every Spring we have hope, only to be baseball blueballed.

Doesn’t mean you go tattooing your ignominous baseball blueball status to the world. And especially not on your neck. Have some respect and make that a trampstamp, fer crissakes.

Finally: this season was/is so egregious for us that…well, let’s let the whiny, sexually frustrated Foundations say it:

I need you (I need you)
More than anyone darling…

A lot of us are finally questioning just how much we “need” this. We may be slow on the uptake – for me it’s been 52 years and yeah 2002 was glorious, but – to quote an old blues tune, “If she won’t do it then her sister will.” Now: WHO do you pick for a sister? I got nuthin.’ Not the Padres. I tried. It felt like trying to imagine making it with a dude.

Peacock was DFA by the Jays. If we get him, we can have a goose and a peacock.

And I still want us to pick up Rondon, and sign Rodon in the offseason.

And the Twins released Tyler Duffey yesterday. We should get him too. We’d need Wade back too if we did that.

Possibly another shortstop added to the slate of free agents next year.

I nether love or hate TA but the more talent in that pool, the better the odds of the Angels landing one.

Correa, Xander, and Turner will get huge money. Like too huge for the Angels to consider unless Arte really cranks up payroll.

But replace Squid’s OPS+ 35 of with TA’s 108 and the lineup looks a lot better.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  Jeff Joiner

If we are gonna spend on SS I wouldn’t mind TA.

But, unlike many, I don’t really want to spend on a “real” shortstop. I know it will drive many to tears, but I’d rather roll out with Rengifo/Fletcher/Velasquez as our infield depth chart (maybe sign Iglesias or Elvis Andrews for cheap).

I’d blow money on Trey Mancini for OF/DH depth and a 1B platoon (or Jesus Aguilar since we have Adell and Moniak technically able to play CF and some of that IF mix can play corner OF in a pinch) and sign MOAR PIDJIN! Also trade Ohtani for stuff we need.

Come out of the ether and stop drinking the Kool-Aid if you are under the belief that this this next year can be a .500 team with very little changes. Ward is a backup at best, but a good one. Walsh needs to be in a platoon if he stays. Rengifo is a super sub, super meaning he can play several positions. Can never depend on Rendon or Walsh to be everyday players again. Stassi is nothing more than a team’s 3rd catcher. Adell is a 5th Outfielder. With this team being a 5th outfielder means serious playing time. We need a a stud SS and move Fletch back to 2nd before he gets hurt again. And sadly, we need to increase the payroll to bring in a real SS, but payroll dictates cap will limit how this team performs.

What ARE YOU?

See, I went from…
March: This team will need some luck to finish over .500 and that’s OK.

to….
April: Damn, they look good right now. If they keep this up maybe we can get destroyed by Houston in the playoffs.
May: How? How can a team be THIS bad? It can’t last forever, and mathematically they can still compete.
June: Welp. They have failed to compete. Doesn’t look good.
July: I’m bored. I’m gonna go do something. They should burn this team down to the water line…. that would be fun to watch.
August: Man. They just aren’t getting any be…. oh look, The Orioles are on free tonight.
September: Go Steelers…. mmmmm, Savannah looks good in that sweater… I kinda want to BBQ something…. birds. they drink weird….

And you know what it’s done to my life? Nothing. I’m still a solar blast furnace of wisdom, creativity, intelligence, strength and raw charisma. You’re still a tool.

Know what it did to the team? Nothing. At no point did they let up in their efforts or failure because of what I thought they may or may not be able to pull off.

Sooooo…. what did you win by not enjoying April? Is there a golden tool trophy out there?

I didn’t become convinced until the Merry Go Round of all the cast offs on a daily basis filtering through. With decent backups in place, we may have weathered the storm. But, unlike you I do not blame the GM, as a matter of fact I believe he did his best under the circumstances. He is a little weak in picking at the dumpster this year as compared to last year. He did put together a very good starting staff but who knew that the BP would fold and the same time as the hitting. I am not a complete Doomer.

I really would like to see us make the Lotto top 5 as we can start a rebuild from there. What has been going on for the last 15 years does not work. We need youth more than we need anyone thing or one player, right now.

Lol. You’re calling Ward a backup ?

You don’t know what you’re talking about.

Have you looked at the stats of other starting OF’s ??

Check out the Mariners, who are by the way ahead of us in the standings.

Ward is better than Haniger, Winker and Frazier.

Check out the Twins as well. They are another probable playoff team and he’s better than 2/3 of their outfield (Kepler, Kiriloff or Cave).

Should I go on ?

You should do your homework before you make such silly comments.

for shame, Jack.

At the moment DJ Stewart was drafted, the Angels were suddenly “on the clock” …

This image is the ANGELS draft day WAR ROOM (checkers game room?) … at the instant that DJ Stewart was announced.

They were celebrating having Taylor Ward still available at slot 26 (first round) when many draft boards had Taylor Ward going in round three.

The gif was used for a long time as a joke – the Angels clearly not knowing how to draft … but now it’s kinda funny that Ward is good – makes Jerry and Ric Wilson look smart – kinda. Although, his route to the bigs was certainly uh circuitous, if you will.

There will be 12 PO teams in addition to at least 4 who just miss, do they all have worse RFer’s? Or do they just have better teams? Having a stronger over all team is better than pointing out a few with weaker RFer’s. We have the best 2B, even though he has to play SS right now. Does that make us better than the Jays?

Yep, I’m living in a different spectrum than you jack. RFer’s like Aaron, Clemente and Robinson were in a different era for sure. Today’s RFer’s are put in CF and hit 50 HR’s a year. Stanton will only hit 40 or maybe Bett’s will only score 135 runs this year while hitting 30 HRs. Our converted Catcher is in the top 10 in MLB. I concede I am what you would call an idiot, just that that the numbers that Clever has are all based on 6 weeks of play. BTW, I predicted that he would be our RFer back in February before you even knew if he would make the 25 roster. Just because he is the best we have does not mean he will not make a great backup, as our starters play less than our starters by the end of the season.

Comparing 12 rosters of playoff teams to the Angels roster makes a lot of sense as I’m sure all of them would trade RFer’s straight up and throw in their SS for our SS.
I never said that Ward was like Junk and shouldn’t be in the Majors.

Last year, Jose Suarez broke out and showed some promise.

Though he struggled earlier this year, he’s finally putting it together over his last 3 starts.

Suarez broke out last year as a long reliever out of the pen. He couldn’t translate that same success as a starter until now. One of the things that helped him out of the pen last year is he worked at a good pace and rhythm and didnt think too much about his last pitch. This year he’s taking some of those similar philosophies and mixing them with another Change Up grip. And as much as no-one wants to hear it he credits the un-Wise.

I really like the Angels Number 9 Prospect, Edgar Quero.

He’s looks undersized for a catcher. But, in what little I’ve seen of him, he plays bigger than his size and with a lot of confidence.

With O’Hoppe and Quero, hopefully, our future catching woes are solved.

Cole Percival son of Troy had an update in The Athletic this morning after he left college at UCR.

lifelong Halo fan, wasn’t drafted.
Angels didnt sign him. would have cost $20k.

What happened next? trAdition.

The Dodgers came calling. Percival was a lifelong Angels fan, but the team for which his dad closed out the 2002 World Series and a franchise-best 316 games never approached with an offer. He took the plunge, confident in the Dodgers’ prolific player development system. Percival now is reaping the benefits. He moved up to Double-A Tulsa last week.
The 23-year-old has a 3.59 ERA in 54 games since last season. He has struck out 22 percent of batters in his 133 career innings, most of which have come in a bulk relief role. There are areas of his game left to refine, but it’s clear he’s on a promising track.
And how couldn’t he? He’s the spitting image of his dad, only wirier.

You could insert the names Vlad/Vlad Jr into that story.

I know. All the stories of how desperate to sign with the Angels Vlad was that I can’t find on the internet haunt me to this day. All those nights he slept under that hats, just begging for the chance to play for the Angels. And if we just hadn’t signed Baldo we would have been that much closer to still not having as much money to offer Vlad Jr as the Blue Jays did.

For shame!

Wow. A 23 year old at A+ ball with a 3.59 ERA, a WHIP over 1.4 and a below average strike out percentage…. oh, and lot’s of walks.

Bu bu but Percy!

I lay this squarely at the feet of who gives a shit.

Who knows? He could be good eventually some day. But Jesus Christ, how hard do we sad bitch Angels fans have to work to find something new to be up our own asses about every morning?

And this is a baseball reporter saying “Wwwooooowwww…. 3.59ERA AND 22% K rate! ZOMS! That’s almost 6 per 9!”?

We’ll maybe, if it were true. The Cubs pick before the Angels in the waiver wire claims since they have a worst records I’m not sure the Angels even had a chance to claim him.

Well thats weird since everything else in the two leagues has now been homogenized .

So Apparently PTP wasn’t a fan of his subpar defense. Which makes no sense since both Ward and Adell are Gold Glove Centerfielders.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  Cowboy26

I don’t follow the logic….

“DON’T give Adell at bats and innings in CF so we can see about moving Trout to LF. Instead, get a guy we know can’t play in the field, so he’s a DH. But don’t DH him cause Ohtani. Thus the smart move is to claim the guy who fields and hits worse than Adell, who we know for an actual fact instead of a CoachDad fact can’t play CF… aaaannnnnddddd?”

It would be nice to put a few HR hitters into the mix. Plus his 40% K rate fits in well with our team profile.

Yes. The passing on Franmil Reyes (DH) will haunt us like cold tendrils of distant heartbreak’s fog for years to come… just like the time our manager rested three good players for most of one game.

How do we fans survive the emotional trauma?

2023 – Who has to be replaced? What Free Agent pitchers are worth the gamble/cost? (For instance, I don’t think we can take the chance on Rodon. We can’t miss and he’s too risky.) I think our only chance is if Arte breaks the threshold.

  1. Ward LF
  2. Trout CF
  3. Ohtani DH
  4. Rendon 3B
  5. Rengifo SS/2B
  6. Stassi C
  7. Walsh 1B
  8. Adell RF
  9. Fletcher SS/2B

A pointless hypothetical because Arturo won’t break the 190. Instead, the Intern will be tasked with unsuccessfully with picking up aging rejects or Quad 4’s who don’t belong on contenders rosters.

Adell is a 4th OF on a competitive team.

I expect them to pursue a steady veteran either in trade (Ohtani) or free agency to shore that up.

Probably a higher end player who can cover 3B as well for the inevitable Rendon injury.

Wait, what were we thinking about again? Oh never mind, I’m just going to stop thinking now.

Need consistent production at 1st (Walsh traded), bookend outfielders (Ward is a 4th, Adell is not ready), SS (Rengifo elevated himself to UTL, cannot be sucked into this recent batting prowess) and a C (split time to gain more of the ABs).

Reality: This team needs a makeover, don’t run it back or everyone will be 4th place again. Likely Perry will settle with what he has and continue to proclaim, “I have faith in my guys. They’re great, working hard.” Perry cannot build out a squad, he has enough money to work with but the missteps continue.

DowningDude

We finally found a team we’re evenly matched with. Unfortunately, they have a team batting average just a touch over 200. Wish we can play them every day – we’d be hovering around 500 if we played every game against them.

Yes, but what fans they have are so much better than Angels fans. Good JuJu can’t be completely destroyed…. even by Billy Beane and his overlords.

By the way, fellow internet people, isn’t Beane like the uber POBO? Shouldn’t his incredibly not the same as a GM powers have kept all of this from happening?

Jayman28

Most Pobos are GMs, but it’s like a promotion with a higher title and pay. I thought you and I went over this with everyone?

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Sure, you and I get it with the whole POBO thing. I’m still waiting for any of the “DEMAND A POBO” crowd to esplain the difference (other than title/pay) between what a GM and POBO will do.

And even more powerful and obviously needed to help us fight off Arte… the Chief Baseball Officer. Ohhhhh…. shiney.

I think melvin had just as much impact on the club as beane did.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Obviously you just don’t understand the totally epoch shattering difference that a POBO can make. Melvin is an empty husk. He just always has a POBO to breath life into him every morning.

Jayman28

I’m pretty sure their POBO is alsp a GM. Maybe make Perry a POBO, maybe a shinier title and more pay will motivate him to do his job better, but what do I know?

JackFrost

Yes, good point.

This is why I bemoan the fact that so many here have complained about Ward and have flat out given up on Walsh. If one does what you did and actually looks at the averages of other teams tops players Ward looks pretty damned good. Even Walsh is not far off alot of other top half of the order starters. Averages are down and runs are down. This is just what it is.

For example, up until like a week ago Jarren Duran of the Red Sox had been hitting leadoff for them for several months; his BA is .227 ! That is actually one point lower than Walsh.

We don’t have it as bad as some people think. That is why I do believe we can be good in 2023.

Can’t really get rid of Walsh if they don’t have a replacement (which they don’t). May be stuck with him since big Sonny is still a year and a half away from being ready.

I don’t think they are going to be “stuck” with anything.

I look for Walsh to bounce back big next year. Right now what he needs more than anything is a day or two off. They have given it to Ward recently, why not Walsh ??

Yeah, since Walsh swings lefty I am not opposed to a platoon. In this scenario Walsh would get the majority of the starts. Expect that in 2023 he will be a much closer proximity to the Walsh of 2021.

If you recall the Angels started 2022 with a platoon at first base with Duffy until Walshie finally broke out. Maybe he needs that kind of motivation. Whatever the answer is now, it ain’t Goose at First.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Yeah. If they can get a corner OF/1B whose platoon splits compliment Walsh it would be great. Also could cost very little for the amount of good it does us.

Jayman28

He could definitely use a couple days off. He also isn’t going anywhere either since he is their only option at first, there isn’t a free agent or anyone in the minors that can take his place. Finding a platoon partner may be ideal though, but fans were upset when they sat him against LHP.

Going forward, if they can find a platoon that can also be a 4th Ofer, then that would be the way to go.

Modern day baseball. Not as thrilling as it used to be. Sit back and swing for the fences. Contact hitters are not held in high regard. Look at Benientendi, only 4 home runs but .300 average. People hammer him cuz he has no pop.
